BrightLocal alternatives: where to go, and how to leave without losing your data

Seven tools, one per reason to leave, plus a seven-step exit plan.

The short answer: Whitespark if you only want to pay for the modules you use (rank tracking from $14 a month, citations as one-off orders), Local Falcon if geogrids are all you look at, Semrush Local if your team already lives in Semrush, SE Ranking if you want local and national SEO in one suite, Synup for a 10 to 50 location network, and Localo for a lighter Google-first tool with a card-free trial. One location and no budget? Your Google Business Profile is still free to run by hand. One thing to know before you pick: the moment you cancel BrightLocal, your reports stop updating and you can't access them without reactivating. Anything you want to keep has to be downloaded first. We compared these seven tools against the prices their vendors publish in 2026.

Our ranking is editorial: a sponsored spot is always labeled on its card, and no affiliate link changes a score.

The real reasons

Why agencies end up leaving BrightLocal

BrightLocal has a solid reputation, and most public reviews praise its support and the depth of its local SEO reports. People rarely leave over a single flaw. They leave because the bill scales with every location, because extras cost extra, and because of something they only notice on the way out: what stays locked in the account. Six reasons come up again and again.

The bill jumps with every location tier

One location on Track costs $41 a month, or $31 a month billed yearly. But pricing is built on location tiers. At 6 to 10 locations, Grow is $131 a month ($98 yearly). At 91 to 100 locations, Grow runs $8,900 a year, and anything above 100 is a custom quote. An agency that signs one more client can land in the next tier overnight.

Citations are billed on top

Citation Builder is pay-as-you-go and sits outside your plan: from $2 per citation with credits, $3.20 per site without. Forty directories without credits adds $128 to the month. Reviewers keep saying the same thing: the full tool is already pricey, then citation building comes on top.

Tiers that feel deliberately capped

Track covers 100 keywords and 4 competitors, but its geogrid only covers 5 keywords. Listing sync needs Manage. Email and SMS review requests need Grow. If you only use one of those pieces, you're still paying for the bundle around it.

Local tracking that isn't always reliable

BrightLocal collects data by reading more than 400 sites rather than through official APIs, as its own CEO explained in reply to a review. Users report blank screenshots, wrong locations and numbers that don't match what they see in Google. On a practitioner forum, one former customer said the GBP post scheduler took 25 days to start working.

No refunds, and a push toward annual

You can change plans whenever you like, but downgrades apply immediately and unused time is not refunded. Several reviewers say they were steered into annual billing and got nothing back when they left mid-year. Pay for 365 days, cancel in month three, and that's money gone.

Cancelling locks your history

After you cancel, BrightLocal keeps your account and reports, but they stop updating and you can't open them without reactivating. Months of rank tracking, audits and geogrids sit behind a closed door. The pricing page says nothing about a full export, so whatever you don't download before your period ends is out of reach.

The 7 alternatives

BrightLocal alternatives, tool by tool

For each tool: why switch, who it fits, the catch, how to move over from BrightLocal, and what it costs. Prices are what vendors list in 2026, before tax, in US dollars. You'll also see Birdeye, Moz Local and Uberall on other lists. We left them out of the ranking because we couldn't confirm a published price for them.

01

Whitespark: the closest match, sold module by module

Modular

Why switch to Whitespark. Whitespark does the same job as BrightLocal but sells each piece on its own. Take rank tracking without citation research, or the reverse. Local Ranking Grids start at $10 a month, and listing work is paid once instead of every month.

Who it fits. Consultants and small agencies who only used one or two BrightLocal modules, and businesses that want a one-time listings cleanup.

Who it doesn't fit. Anyone who wants one dashboard on one subscription: each Whitespark tool has its own bill.

The catch. No free trial is listed on the pricing page. Reputation Builder costs $79 per location per month, more than BrightLocal Grow for a single location.

Moving over from BrightLocal. List your tracked keywords and locations in BrightLocal first. Rebuild them in Local Rank Tracker with the same city and area so your trend lines stay comparable. Leave existing citations alone: they stay live, so there's nothing to redo.

Pricing. Local Rank Tracker $14 to $200 a month; Local Citation Finder $33 to $149 a month; Local Ranking Grids from $10 a month; Listings Service $20 to $999 one-time; Local Platform $1 per location per month.

02

Local Falcon: geogrids and nothing else

Geogrid

Why switch to Local Falcon. If your BrightLocal login was mostly for the map grid, Local Falcon does that job without the rest. You buy credits, and one credit is one grid point, so a 5x5 scan uses 25. Starter at $24.99 a month gives you 7,500 credits, which is 300 scans at 5x5.

Who it fits. Local SEOs and agencies who measure Google Maps visibility point by point around each client.

Who it doesn't fit. Anyone who also needs citation audits, listing sync or review requests. Local Falcon doesn't do those.

The catch. Big grids burn credits fast: a 13x13 scan uses 169. Work out your monthly usage before you pick a plan.

Moving over from BrightLocal. Start with the 100 free credits, no card needed. That's four 5x5 scans on your main keywords to compare against your last BrightLocal geogrid. Keep the same grid size and spacing or the two readings won't mean the same thing.

Pricing. Monthly from $24.99 (Starter, 7,500 credits) to $199.99; yearly from $299.88 to $2,399.88; pay-as-you-go at $0.05 per credit, no expiry.

Semrush Local: the local module of your SEO suite

Already on Semrush

Why switch to Semrush Local. If your team already does its SEO in Semrush (rated 4.2 out of 5 in our Semrush review), the local module saves you another login. Pro handles directory listings and reviews and includes 1,225 Map Rank Tracker credits.

Who it fits. Marketing teams and agencies already working in Semrush who want national and local SEO on one bill.

Who it doesn't fit. A single shop that only needs its local listing. Paying for a full suite for that makes no sense.

The catch. Listing and review management is Pro only. Base, at $30, is limited to tracking and 375 map credits. Each extra user is $20 a month.

Moving over from BrightLocal. Turn on Semrush Local for your locations before BrightLocal ends. Rebuild your map keywords, then compare the listing status both tools report to catch inconsistencies.

Pricing. Base $30 and Pro $60 per location per month, billed yearly; Business on quote; extra user $20 a month.

SE Ranking: the full suite at a mid-market price

Full suite

Why switch to SE Ranking. SE Ranking covers keyword tracking, site audits and competitor research, with a Local Marketing module on top. For an agency running local in BrightLocal and national somewhere else, it's a chance to merge the two.

Who it fits. Agencies and in-house teams that track both national and local rankings and want one tool.

Who it doesn't fit. A single location business. The entry plan costs $103.20 a month billed yearly, against $31 for BrightLocal Track.

The catch. The local module costs extra, and the pricing page doesn't say whether the per-location rate is monthly or yearly. Ask before you sign.

Moving over from BrightLocal. Rebuild projects client by client and import your tracked keyword lists. Plan for a month of overlap: your new trend line starts from zero.

Pricing. Core $129 a month or $103.20 billed yearly; Growth $279 or $223.20; extra Local Marketing locations from $18.40.

Synup: plain bundles for multi-location brands

Networks

Why switch to Synup. Synup publishes the price of each location bundle: $299 a month for 10 locations, $899 for 50. If your BrightLocal bill kept jumping tiers, this is easier to forecast.

Who it fits. Franchise and multi-location brands, and agencies managing 10 to 50 locations.

Who it doesn't fit. A one-location business hoping to trial a bigger plan: the 14-day trial only covers Solo.

The catch. Above 50 locations you're into a sales conversation. And because the trial is Solo only, you can't judge the network features before paying.

Moving over from BrightLocal. Build a spreadsheet with the exact name, address, phone and hours of each location from BrightLocal, then import it. Start on the tier that matches your count, not the one above.

Pricing. Solo $49 a month (1 location), Premium $299 (10), Pro $499 (25), Scale $899 (50); 20% off yearly.

Localo: a lighter, Google-first tool from Europe

Google-first

Why switch to Localo. Localo focuses on your Google Business Profile and tracks your map rankings around it. It's one of the tools practitioners name when they leave BrightLocal for geogrids, and one profile costs $39 a month billed yearly.

Who it fits. Local businesses and freelancers who want a simple tool around one or a few Google profiles.

Who it doesn't fit. Networks that need to push data to dozens of directories. Localo is built around Google.

The catch. Its pricing page contradicts itself on how many profiles Pro covers (60 in the table, 2 to 120 in the FAQ), so get the number in writing. Prices are plus VAT. Plans renew automatically on the billing date, with no reminder, so set your own calendar alert.

Moving over from BrightLocal. Start the 14-day trial with no card while BrightLocal is still running, connect your Google profile and compare rankings on the same area. You also get 30 days to request a refund after paying.

Pricing. Single Business $39 a month billed yearly ($49 regular monthly), one profile; Pro $149 a month billed yearly ($169 monthly), for agencies; Enterprise on quote.

Google Business Profile: the listing that matters, free

Free

Why switch to Google Business Profile. In local search, your Google listing is what shows on the map. Creating and managing it costs nothing: hours, photos, categories, posts, review replies. For one location, that covers most of what BrightLocal was watching for you.

Who it fits. One or two location businesses with someone who can spend ten minutes a week on it.

Who it doesn't fit. Agencies and networks: with no rank tracking or audits, you're flying blind.

The catch. It won't show your map position around your address, and it only covers Google. Other directories are one-by-one work.

Moving over from BrightLocal. Make sure the profile is owned by your own account, not a former agency's. Schedule your own posts before BrightLocal's scheduler stops.

Exit plan

Leave BrightLocal in seven steps

Almost everything happens before you cancel, because afterwards you can't see your reports. Each step protects something: your history, your listings, your budget.

01

Write down your renewal date and every add-on

A month out

Go to Billing Details, then Plans & Addons. Note when your paid period ends (30 or 365 days) and list your add-ons. Since nothing is prorated, the best day to leave is just before renewal, not mid-term.

02

Download every report you want to keep

First

Rankings, listing audits, geogrids, citation tracking: download them client by client while the account is active. After you cancel they stay in the account but you can't reach them. The pricing page describes no full export, so check what each report offers in your account and start with the ones clients see every month.

03

List your citations and directory logins

Before cancelling

Citations bought through Citation Builder are live listings on directories, and they stay up after you leave. Make a list of the sites and grab logins where you have them. If you're on Manage or Grow, listing sync stops with the plan, so flag the listings it was keeping current.

04

Run the new tool in parallel during its trial

Two to four weeks

Use the trials: 100 free credits on Local Falcon, 14 days with no card on Localo, 14 days on Synup Solo. Run both tools on two or three keywords and check the readings line up.

05

Rebuild the same keywords, areas and grids

Switch day

Use the same city, grid center, size (5x5, 7x7) and spacing. A wider or shifted grid will show a different rank even though nothing changed in Google. Keep these settings in a spreadsheet: clients will ask.

06

Cancel add-ons first, then the plan

Day before renewal

Only an account admin can cancel. BrightLocal requires add-ons to be cancelled before the main subscription. You keep access until the paid period ends. If you want your data deleted, ask for it explicitly; otherwise the account just sits dormant.

07

Check your listings once sync stops

Two weeks and one month

When sync stops, some listings stay correct and others can drift back to old data. Check Google, Bing, Apple Maps, Facebook and the main directories in your market at two weeks and again at one month. Fix anything that moved by hand, Google first.

Exit pitfalls

What makes a BrightLocal exit go wrong

The mistakes that show up in reviews and local SEO forums aren't technical. They're missed dates, missed downloads and mismatched settings, and each one costs more than the time it would have taken to avoid.

Cancelling before downloading reports

The day you cancel, your history goes dark. For an agency, that's a year of client charts gone from view. Download first.

Leaving mid-way through an annual term

Unused time isn't refunded. Pay $485 for a year, leave in month six, and you get nothing back. Time your exit to the renewal date.

Forgetting add-ons

Add-ons must be cancelled before the main plan. A forgotten one can block the cancellation or keep billing. Check the list in Plans & Addons.

Comparing grids with different settings

A 7x7 grid doesn't compare to a 5x5. If your rank "drops" the day you switch tools, check the settings before anything else.

Assuming listings stay frozen

Built citations stay live, but without sync nothing corrects itself. A change of hours or phone number is now a directory-by-directory job.

Swapping into a tool that's too big

If you only used geogrids, a $100 a month suite repeats the problem. Our ranking of the best SEO tools for local businesses helps you size it right.

  • Renewal date and add-on list written down
  • Client reports downloaded one by one
  • Citation list and directory logins saved
  • New tool running in parallel during its trial
  • Same keywords, grid center, size and spacing rebuilt
  • Add-ons then plan cancelled by an admin
  • Listings checked at two weeks and one month
FAQ · 8 questions

BrightLocal alternatives: common questions

  • What happens to my reports if I cancel BrightLocal?

They stay in your account, but they stop updating and you can't access them unless you reactivate. Inactive accounts may be deleted after a long period. Download what you want to keep before your paid period ends.

  • Does BrightLocal give refunds?

Not for unused time. Plan changes and downgrades apply immediately with no prorated refund. The 14-day trial, with full access and no card, is the place to decide before you pay.

  • How do I cancel my BrightLocal subscription?

An account admin goes to Billing Details, then Plans & Addons, cancels each add-on, then the main plan. Access continues until the end of the paid period, and you can request that your data be deleted.

  • Do my BrightLocal citations disappear when I leave?

No. Citations built with Citation Builder are listings on the directories themselves, so they stay live. You can even buy Citation Builder orders with a free account. What stops is the listing sync included in Manage and Grow.

  • What's the cheapest BrightLocal alternative?

Google Business Profile, which is free, if you have one location. Among paid tools, Whitespark grids start at $10 a month and Local Falcon sells credits at $0.05 each with no subscription. For reference, BrightLocal Track is $369 a year for one location.

  • BrightLocal vs Whitespark: which is better?

BrightLocal if you want everything on one plan, Whitespark if you only use one or two modules. Whitespark sells each tool separately and charges listing work once, from $20 to $999. Its review requests, at $79 per location per month, cost more than Grow though.

  • Is BrightLocal worth it for a single location?

Often not, unless you use several modules. Track is $369 a year. A Google profile you run yourself plus pay-as-you-go grids on Local Falcon covers the basics for a fraction of that. If you're also rethinking listing management, our guide to switching from Yext covers how to keep listings intact.

  • Is there an alternative that also replaces my main SEO tool?

Yes. SE Ranking and Semrush both pair a full SEO suite with a local module, so you can drop two subscriptions for one. If Moz is the other tool on your bill, see our Moz Pro alternatives; if it's Semrush you want to drop, see our Semrush alternatives.
