D-ID alternatives: where to go for talking photos and AI avatars
Six tools covered in depth, one per reason to leave, plus a seven-step exit plan.
The short answer: go with HeyGen for more realistic photo avatars you can use in ads, Hedra to animate any image (illustrations, mascots, characters), Synthesia for corporate training, Colossyan if your modules end up in an LMS, Vidnoz on a shoestring budget, and Anam if you relied on D-ID's real-time agents. Sometimes the right call is to stay: for animating a single photo cheaply, D-ID is still one of the most polished options. One thing to check first: videos made on the Lite plan are licensed for personal use only, so they can't legally sell anything. We compared all six tools and reread their pricing and terms in 2026.
The ranking is editorial: a sponsored placement is always labeled on its card, and no affiliate link ever changes a score.
Why people leave D-ID, and what the pricing page won't tell you
D-ID made the talking photo mainstream: upload a portrait, type a script, and the face comes alive. It's still simple, and casual users rate it well. People leave over licensing, minutes, billing and support. Here are six reasons, each checked against D-ID's own pages and terms in 2026.
The $5.90 plan is personal use only
Lite costs $5.90 a month ($4.70 billed yearly, so $56 a year). That's the price that gets people in. But D-ID's terms limit Lite to non-commercial use, and every video carries the D-ID logo. Put a Lite video in an ad, on a sales page or on your company site and you're outside the license. For business use, the real entry point is Pro at $29 a month.
Pro still carries a mark
Pro drops the D-ID logo but not every trace: the plan lists an "AI watermark" that flags the video as AI-generated. Your own logo only comes with Advanced, at $196 a month ($108 billed yearly). If a client wants a clean video with no mark at all, that's a steep jump.
Few minutes, billed in 15-second blocks
Lite gives you 10 minutes a month, Pro 15 minutes at its base tier, Advanced 100 minutes. Every video is rounded up to the next 15 seconds, so ten 20-second clips count as 5 minutes, not 3:20. The studio and the API draw from the same balance, and unused minutes expire at the end of the period. If you make short clips, the counter drains faster than you'd expect.
No refunds, and 15 days' notice
D-ID's terms call payments irrevocable and non-refundable. Plans renew automatically, and the agreement asks you to cancel 15 days before the period ends to avoid the next charge. Several users say they were billed after forgetting and got nothing back. If you're leaving, do it early.
Results depend heavily on the photo
Happy users love the speed: a still photo turns into a talking face in minutes. Unhappy ones mention odd-looking teeth, skewed expressions, warped mouths, and video avatars that fail after several attempts while still eating credits. One developer who wired up the API advised against using it in production, citing thin docs and no clear error reporting.
Support that users call missing
On a major review site, D-ID sits at 3.7 out of 5 across about 40 reviews, yet 63% are one star, and the company doesn't reply to negative ones. The complaints repeat: a help button that does nothing, answers that point you back to the contract. On a product launch platform it holds 4.7 out of 5. Occasional users are happy. Monthly payers, less so.
You're leaving because… go to…
The right D-ID alternative depends on what you were using it for. Usually only one row applies to you. Each card links to the full profile below.
Unlimited photo avatars on Creator, $24 a month billed yearly.
You animate illustrations, mascots or charactersHedraStudio from $20 a month, or a pay-per-second API with no subscription.

D-ID alternatives, tool by tool
For each tool: why move there, who it's for, its main limit, how to rebuild your videos, and what it costs. Prices are in US dollars, before tax, as each vendor lists them.
The tools
HeyGen: the most direct swap for photo avatars
Realistic photo avatarsWhy move to HeyGen. HeyGen does what D-ID does (a photo becomes a talking presenter), with a more natural result according to most comparisons. With the Avatar IV engine in photo mode, a minute costs 16 credits. Creator gives you 600 credits a month, roughly 37 minutes of animated photo for $24 a month billed yearly ($29 month to month). That's more than double D-ID Pro's 15 minutes at a similar price. We rate it 4.0 out of 5 in our AI video generator ranking.
Who it's for. Marketing teams, creators and freelancers who publish talking-head videos, and anyone translating videos into several languages.
Who it's not for. Anyone who wants a fixed price per minute. HeyGen bills everything in credits, and the cost depends on the engine you pick.
Its limit. Credits. The free plan gives you 3 one-minute videos a month, with only 10 seconds per video on Avatar IV. Creator has no top-ups mid-month. And Avatar IV costs far more through the API (46 credits a minute for photo avatars). Our guide to switching from HeyGen covers these traps, worth a read before you subscribe.
How to migrate. Reuse your source photo and script: photo avatars work on the free plan, so you can compare results on the same portrait. If you automate renders, our HeyGen with Make page shows how.

- 3 one-minute videos a month

- Creator $24/mo billed yearly

Hedra: make any image talk
Characters and creativeWhy move to Hedra. D-ID is built around front-facing photos of real people. Hedra's Character-3 model also animates illustrations, AI-generated characters, mascots and stylized portraits, with head movement and expression. For a content creator or a brand with a mascot, it's often the best replacement.
Who it's for. Creators, studios and brands that need a character to talk, not a presenter.
Who it's not for. A training team that wants a sober presenter and a scene editor. Synthesia or Colossyan handle that better.
Its limit. The pricing grid. Studio starts at $20 a month, but plan details shift often and we couldn't read the full grid on the official page. Before subscribing, check how many seconds of video your plan includes. For occasional use, the API is pay as you go from a prepaid balance: the avatar and lip-sync line starts at 2.5 cents per second, about $1.50 a minute (our calculation). That's more per minute than D-ID Pro; the upside is you only pay for what you generate.
How to migrate. Keep your source images at full resolution and your audio files: Hedra accepts recorded voice, and voice cloning is free through the API. Integrations that called D-ID's API can be rewritten against Hedra's, with per-second billing drawn from a prepaid balance.

Synthesia: corporate training on a minutes plan
Training and enterpriseWhy move to Synthesia. If you used D-ID for internal explainers, Synthesia is built for that job: a scene-based editor, 140+ languages, stock avatars and filmed personal avatars. You pay for minutes, not credits. We rate it 4.1 out of 5, the top score in our AI video generator ranking.
Who it's for. HR, L&D and internal comms teams producing regular modules in several languages.
Who it's not for. Anyone who wants to animate a photo. Synthesia doesn't start from a still portrait: you pick an avatar or film your own.
Its limit. The free plan gives 10 minutes a month with a watermark and no downloads. Starter is $19 a month or $14 billed yearly, Pro $89 or $59 billed yearly. Standalone voice cloning and SCORM export are listed on Enterprise.
How to migrate. Your D-ID scripts copy over scene by scene. A personal avatar is rebuilt from a recording plus a filmed consent. Our guide to switching from Synthesia lists its weak spots, useful before you sign.
- Free
- 10 min/mo, no downloads
- Paid
- Starter $14/mo billed yearly
- Best for
- internal training
- Limit
- no photo animation
Colossyan: when your videos end up in an LMS
E-learning and SCORMWhy move to Colossyan. A training module has to load into your learning management system (the LMS) and report who completed it. That's what SCORM does, and D-ID doesn't offer it. Colossyan includes it on Professional, with 5 SCORM exports a month, no Enterprise contract required.
Who it's for. L&D teams and training providers publishing modules in an LMS.
Who it's not for. Social or ad content. You'd pay for training features you'd never open.
Its limit. Professional is $59 a month, billed yearly: 30 minutes on the NEO engine plus 10 on NEO2, for one editor, $30 a month per extra member. Minutes don't roll over, and unused annual months aren't refunded. On the plus side, you can pause the plan for up to 2 months at no cost.
How to migrate. The free plan gives 20 minutes a month with a watermark and no MP4 export, but it does include personal avatars. Rebuild one full module there before you commit to a year.
- Free
- 20 min/mo, watermark
- Paid
- Professional $59/mo billed yearly
- Best for
- SCORM modules
- Limit
- annual plan, no refunds
Vidnoz: the cheapest talking photo
Tight budgetWhy move to Vidnoz. If you used D-ID Lite for a few short clips, Vidnoz does the same with a more generous free plan: videos up to 3 minutes, in 720p, with a Vidnoz watermark. Paid plans start at $14.99 a month, remove the watermark and allow up to 60 minutes per video.
Who it's for. Small budgets, social content and quick experiments.
Who it's not for. Brands that care a lot about render quality, or teams that need to know in advance how many videos they'll get.
Its limit. The credit grid on the vendor's own page is confusing enough that we won't repeat it here. Add-ons cost extra: a Pro avatar at $299 a year, a voice clone at $9.99 a month. Run the numbers on a real project before paying.
How to migrate. Drop your photo and script into the free plan, then compare the result side by side with your best D-ID video before you subscribe.
- Free
- 3-min videos, 720p
- Paid
- from $14.99/mo
- Best for
- low budget, social
- Limit
- unclear credit grid
Anam: if you used D-ID's live agents
Real-time avatarsWhy move to Anam. D-ID also sells agents: a face that answers your visitors live. Anam focuses on that one job, with clear per-minute pricing: Starter at $12 a month for 50 minutes (conversations up to 5 minutes), then $0.16 per extra minute. Explorer is $49 for 250 minutes. Keep in mind that Anam is a direct competitor and publishes its own D-ID comparison.
Who it's for. Product teams putting a welcome, sales or training avatar on their site or app.
Who it's not for. Anyone making downloadable videos. Anam doesn't replace D-ID's studio.
Its limit. The free plan (30 minutes a month) bans commercial use and cuts each conversation at 3 minutes. Minutes don't roll over. You'll need a developer. If you want another API-first option, Tavus starts at $22 a month.
How to migrate. Find every page where your D-ID agent is embedded and the API key it uses. Rebuild the agent's persona (instructions, voice) in Anam, then revoke the D-ID key.

- 30 min/mo, non-commercial
- Paid
- Starter $12/mo

D-ID and 6 alternatives side by side
Our default pick: HeyGen to replace the talking photo, Hedra for characters. To compare fairly, bring everything back to cost per minute. D-ID Lite works out to about $0.59 a minute, with no commercial rights. D-ID Pro billed yearly comes to about $1.06 a minute ($191 a year for 15 minutes a month). HeyGen Creator on Avatar IV photo runs about $0.64 a minute billed yearly, Hedra's avatar API about $1.50, so more per minute than D-ID Pro. These are our own calculations from each vendor's listed prices.

Leave D-ID in seven steps
Order matters, because each step protects something. Your minutes first, then your videos, then your rights, then your data.
The steps
Use up your minutes and note your renewal date
FirstUnused minutes expire at the end of the period, and no payment is refunded. Check your balance and renewal date, then run the renders you still need.
Tip: aim for clips of 15, 30 or 45 seconds. D-ID rounds every video up to the next 15 seconds, so a 16-second clip costs you 30.
- Risk if rushed
- lost minutes
Download every video
Day 1After you cancel, your account drops to free and your videos stay available. But if you then close the account, the terms say your files are deleted within 14 days. Download everything now and store it outside D-ID, named by project.
A video made during the trial keeps its watermark even after you upgrade. If you need a clean copy, regenerate it before you leave.
- Deadline
- 14 days after closing
Check the license on your published videos
The trapList every D-ID video already live. Anything made on Lite is licensed for personal use. If it runs in an ad, on a sales page or on your company site, remake it first with your new tool. You own your outputs, but only within the license you paid for.
- Remake
- commercial Lite videos
Keep your source photos and scripts
No tool imports a D-ID project. What moves is your files: the original photo at full resolution, the script, and any voice recording. Put them in one folder per video.
If a D-ID render had flaws, retake the photo using D-ID's own rules, which work elsewhere too: face the camera, mouth closed, even lighting, no sunglasses or hat, head at least 200 pixels wide.
- Keep
- photo, script, audio
Find your API keys and automations
The studio and the API share one minute balance. Before you cut anything, find where your D-ID key is used: Make or Zapier scenarios, your site, your app, an embedded agent. Replace each call with the new tool's API (HeyGen, Hedra or Anam), confirm it runs, then revoke the key. Our HeyGen with Make and HeyGen with Zapier pages show the modules to rebuild.
- Risk if rushed
- broken automations
Cancel at least 15 days before renewal
Key dateIn D-ID, go to Billing, then Cancel plan. The plan stays active until the period ends. The terms ask for cancellation 15 days before renewal: give yourself that margin, even though the FAQ says you can cancel anytime. If you subscribed in the mobile app, cancel through the App Store or Google Play, not with D-ID.
- Notice
- 15 days
Delete your account and voice
DataYour photo and cloned voice are personal data. Once everything is downloaded, request account deletion by emailing support@d-id.com (on mobile, from account settings). Also note that a free account left inactive for 6 months has its data deleted after a single warning email.

What makes a D-ID exit go wrong
The same mistakes show up again and again in reviews from people who left. None of them are technical. They're oversights, and each one costs money, hours, or rights to your videos.
Leaving Lite videos on commercial channels
This is the trap nobody mentions. A Lite video in an ad stays outside the license even after you leave. Remake it on a plan that allows commercial use: Pro or above at D-ID; with another tool, check its terms before publishing.
Canceling the day before renewal
With 15 days' notice in the terms and no refunds, a late cancellation can cost you another month, or a whole year on an annual plan. Put the date in your calendar today.
Closing the account before downloading everything
Closing triggers deletion of your files within 14 days. Keep the free account until you've checked your downloads one by one.
Forgetting an API key in an automation
A scenario still calling D-ID fails silently the day your plan lapses. List your calls, replace them, then revoke the key.
Comparing credits to minutes
600 HeyGen credits aren't 600 minutes. On Avatar IV photo, they're about 37. At D-ID, 15 Pro minutes are 15 minutes, but rounded in 15-second blocks. Convert everything to real minutes on your usual format.
Keeping a weak source photo
A blurry, side-on or open-mouthed photo renders badly everywhere, and every failed render eats your balance. Retake it before you migrate. To see every tool ranked, read our AI video generator ranking.

D-ID alternatives: frequently asked questions
Is there a free alternative to D-ID?
Yes. HeyGen lets you build a photo avatar on its free plan (3 one-minute videos a month, watermarked). Vidnoz allows longer free videos, up to 3 minutes in 720p. Hedra's API isn't free: it draws on a prepaid balance.
Can I use D-ID Lite commercially?
No. D-ID's terms limit Lite to non-commercial use. For ads, sales pages or client work you need Pro ($29 a month, $15.95 billed yearly) or Advanced. If you switch tools, check the commercial terms of the plan you pick before publishing.
HeyGen vs D-ID: which is better?
HeyGen, if the video has to sell or represent a brand: more realistic output, and video translation. D-ID, if you're animating a single photo for personal use or its live agents are already running. At a similar budget, HeyGen Creator gives you more minutes of animated photo than D-ID Pro.
How do I remove the D-ID watermark?
Upgrading to Pro removes the D-ID logo, but an "AI watermark" remains. Only Advanced ($196 a month, $108 billed yearly) lets you use your own logo. Trial videos have to be regenerated on a paid plan.
How do I cancel D-ID and can I get a refund?
Go to Billing, then Cancel plan, at least 15 days before renewal as the terms require. Refunds aren't offered: payments are described as non-refundable, and users who asked after missing the date report being turned down. Mobile subscriptions are canceled in the App Store or Google Play.
What happens to my D-ID videos after I cancel?
You keep access until the paid period ends. Then the account drops to free and your videos stay visible. If you close the account, files are deleted within 14 days, so download everything first.
How much does a minute of D-ID video cost?
About $0.59 on Lite ($5.90 for 10 minutes), $1.93 on Pro monthly, and $1.06 on Pro billed yearly. These are our calculations from D-ID's price grid. Remember the 15-second rounding: on very short clips the real cost climbs higher.
What's the best D-ID alternative for real-time avatars?
Anam, for clear per-minute pricing: 30 free minutes a month to try it, then Starter at $12 for 50 minutes. Tavus is the other developer-first option, from $22 a month. Both need someone to integrate the API.
