Sage alternatives: which Sage you have, and where to go next

Six reasons people leave (and three to stay), six destinations by Sage product, and an eight-step exit that keeps your books intact.

The short answer: a UK business on Sage 50 Accounts usually lands on Xero (from £18 a month ex VAT) or, for sole traders, FreeAgent. A US business on Sage 50 goes to QuickBooks Online (from $38 a month), which also has the most documented import route. A micro business on a tight budget can start free on Zoho Books. If you run Sage Intacct or Sage 200, you are shopping for a mid-market system: NetSuite is the usual comparison, and Odoo fits when you also need sales and inventory in one place. If Sage 50 is your only concern, our Sage 50 switching guide goes deeper. One honest note first: Sage has not announced the end of Sage 50. What did close in the US was Sage Business Cloud Accounting, at the end of 2024. Leave for a real reason, not a rumor. We compared six destinations and their published prices in 2026.

The real reasons

Why people leave Sage, and why some should stay

"Sage" is a family, not a product. In the US, Sage 50 is desktop accounting sold on an annual subscription, and Sage Intacct is cloud financials for mid-sized companies. In the UK you also meet Sage 50 Accounts, sold in packages, and Sage 200 for larger SMBs. Before the complaints, three fair reasons to stay: the software is stable, accountants know it, and replacing a working ledger always costs time. If your Sage 50 runs fine on one Windows PC and your accountant is happy, staying is often the lowest-risk choice. People leave over six recurring issues, drawn from user reviews and Sage's own community forums.

Renewals that jump

This is the loudest complaint in the UK. Users of Sage 50 report renewals going from £211 to £315, and from £30 to £63 for an add-on, with packages they did not ask for. One Sage 50 Professional customer saw a 50% increase, cut to 22.6% after a complaint, and said he was done "negotiating" with Sage every year. Your contract sets the rules, so read the renewal terms now, not the week before.

A price you have to ask for

Sage 50 publishes prices (in the US, Pro starts at $132.17 a month for one user, with a one-year minimum; in the UK, Standard is £77 and Professional £155 a month according to Sage). Sage Intacct and Sage 200 do not: they are quote-only, often through a reseller, and the implementation partner can cost more than the licence.

Slow support

Reviews repeat the same story: several calls to fix a simple account change, 20 to 30 minutes on hold, email replies that arrive weeks later. Some customers report a charge after cancelling. The practical lesson: export your data before any dispute, not during one.

Desktop and Windows first

Sage 50 installs on Windows. Remote access means hosting or a third-party service, and every version upgrade converts your company file, so every machine must run the same release. Support also focuses on recent versions. For a team that works from anywhere, that is usually where the decision gets made.

Product changes leave people unsure

Sage closed Sage Business Cloud Accounting in the US at the end of 2024, and moved customers elsewhere. That was a different product from Sage 50, which is still sold. But it left many small businesses wondering what comes next, and it explains a lot of the "is Sage being discontinued" searches.

Moving data is never one click

Even the best-documented route, Sage 50 to QuickBooks Online in the UK, has limits: VAT history arrives as single lines, not as filed returns, and retained earnings can split across two lines. Plan the exit like a small project, whatever destination you pick.

The 6 alternatives

Sage alternatives, one by one

For each one: why move there, which Sage customer it fits, its limit, how to migrate and what it costs. Prices are the ones each vendor publishes in 2026, in the currency it shows for that market. When a vendor publishes nothing, we say "quote only".

01

Xero: the natural move for UK businesses

UK default

Why move to Xero. Most UK Sage 50 users who leave are leaving the renewal, not the idea of proper accounting. Xero keeps the double-entry depth, adds bank feeds, and runs in a browser. Your accountant probably already uses it.

Who it's for. UK small businesses with an accountant, from one person to a growing team.

Who it's not for. A business that needs deep stock control or job costing inside the ledger: you'll add apps.

Its limit. Ignite caps you at 20 invoices a month, so most real businesses start on Grow. Add-ons stack up fast.

How to migrate. Movemybooks, listed on the Xero app store, converts Sage desktop files. Otherwise, bring in contacts and your opening trial balance by CSV at a year end or VAT quarter.

Price. UK: Ignite £18, Grow £39, Comprehensive £55, Ultimate £70 a month ex VAT. US: Early $27, Growing $59, Established $97.

02

QuickBooks Online: the US default, with a real import path

US default

Why move to QuickBooks Online. In the US, it's the system most bookkeepers know, and Intuit documents an official route out of Sage 50 through its partner Dataswitcher.

Who it's for. US small businesses with a bookkeeper or accountant, from one user to 25 on Advanced.

Who it's not for. A company that needs multi-entity consolidation or heavy inventory: that's NetSuite territory.

Its limit. Prices step up by user count, and promotional pricing only lasts a few months.

How to migrate. In the UK, Intuit's Dataswitcher service moves up to two years of Sage 50 data, currently free for a limited time, in two to four business days. The QuickBooks company must be empty and VAT turned off before the import. VAT history arrives as lines, not filed returns, and retained earnings may split across two lines. Check those three points on day one.

Price. Simple Start $38, Essentials $85, Plus $140, Advanced $340 a month.

FreeAgent: the cheapest serious option for UK sole traders

UK small

Why move to FreeAgent. If you pay for Sage 50 to run the books of a one-person business, you're paying for features you don't use. FreeAgent covers invoicing, expenses and VAT in one place, priced for a one-person business.

Who it's for. UK freelancers, sole traders and small limited companies.

Who it's not for. A business with stock, several departments or a US entity.

Its limit. Light on inventory and multi-user workflows.

How to migrate. Start at a VAT quarter or year end, import contacts and your opening balances, and keep a full Sage backup for old records.

Price. £19 a month for sole traders, £33 for limited companies, and free with some UK business bank accounts (NatWest, RBS, Ulster, Mettle).

Zoho Books: a real free plan for micro businesses

Free plan

Why move to Zoho Books. A Sage 50 subscription is hard to justify for a business that sends a handful of invoices a month. Zoho Books has a free plan that covers the basics.

Who it's for. Micro businesses and early-stage companies under the revenue cap.

Who it's not for. Anyone past $50,000 in revenue who wants to stay free.

Its limit. The free plan stops at $50,000 in revenue and 1,000 invoices a year, with one user plus your accountant.

How to migrate. Import contacts, items and opening balances by CSV.

Price. Free, then Standard $20 a month ($15 billed yearly).

NetSuite: the usual comparison for Sage Intacct and Sage 200

Mid-market

Why move to NetSuite. If you run Sage Intacct or Sage 200, you're not choosing bookkeeping software, you're choosing an ERP. Oracle NetSuite is the system most mid-market finance teams put next to Intacct: multi-entity, consolidation, inventory and order management in one place.

Who it's for. Growing companies with several entities, currencies or warehouses.

Who it's not for. A small business leaving Sage 50 to save money: it'll cost more.

Its limit. No published pricing, and the implementation is a project in itself.

How to migrate. Through an implementation partner, at a year end, with your Sage trial balance and open items as the starting point.

Price. Quote only.

Odoo: when Sage was one of five tools running the business

All-in-one

Why move to Odoo. Plenty of businesses run Sage for the books, plus a CRM, an inventory tool and spreadsheets. Odoo puts them in one system: a sale creates the invoice, the invoice posts to the ledger.

Who it's for. SMBs that want accounting, sales, purchasing and stock together, and have someone to set it up.

Who it's not for. A business that just wants simpler bookkeeping than Sage.

Its limit. Heavy setup: plan for a partner or someone in-house who knows it.

How to migrate. Start with accounting alone, import contacts and opening balances, then add one app at a time.

Price. One app free with unlimited users, then $24.90 per user a month, billed yearly.

Exit plan

Leaving Sage in eight steps

Picking the software takes a week. The exit needs planning: the order of these steps protects your history, your accountant's work and your cash.

01

Write down your product, version and renewal date

Day 1

Check Help, About for the exact product and version. Then find your renewal date and notice terms. Missing that date usually means another year at the new price.

Note
product, version, renewal
02

Pick your date: year end or a VAT quarter

Timing

Switch the day after a year end if you can, or at least at the start of a VAT quarter. Splitting a year across two systems means two sets of reports to reconcile.

Best
day after year end
Fallback
start of a VAT quarter
03

Ask your accountant first

Before you choose

Before comparing prices, ask which software your accountant's firm uses and what they need from you. Joining their system saves hours every month.

Ask
which software does your firm use?
04

Run your final reports

Must do

Save the trial balance, general ledger, aged debtors and creditors, and VAT returns for every year you need, as PDF and CSV. Most destinations bring in only an opening balance or a limited history.

Save
trial balance, ledger, VAT
05

Keep a full backup, and note the version

Safety

A Sage backup only opens in a compatible version. Keep it with its version number, next to your PDF reports, which open anywhere.

Keep
backup + version number
06

Import lists, then the opening balance

Switch

Contacts and items first, then the opening trial balance. If you use Dataswitcher for QuickBooks, start from an empty company with VAT off, then check VAT lines and retained earnings. The final test is simple: the trial balance must match to the cent.

Order

07

Run both for one period

Safety net

Keep Sage open while you close one month or one VAT quarter in the new system. Compare the figures. That's when hidden mapping errors show up.

08

Cancel in writing, then watch the next payment

Last

Cancel within your notice period, in writing, and keep the confirmation. Check the next statement: customers report charges after cancelling.

Exit pitfalls

What makes a Sage exit go wrong

Leaving Sage rarely fails for technical reasons. It fails on contracts, timing and missing records, discovered at the first audit or the first surprise payment.

Missing the renewal date

Renewals roll over. Note the date on day one and send your notice early.

Comparing licences, not projects

For Intacct or Sage 200, the partner often costs more than the licence. Compare the total: licence, implementation, data and training.

Expecting full VAT history

Even the official QuickBooks route brings VAT in as lines, not returns. Keep your filed returns as PDFs.

Switching mid-year

Two systems for one year means two reconciliations. Wait for a year end or a VAT quarter.

Exporting during a dispute

When access is cut or contested, exports get hard. Export everything before you announce you're leaving.

Choosing without your accountant

They'll live in the system. Software they don't know means file swaps every month and higher fees.

  • Product, version and renewal date written down
  • Notice period checked in the contract
  • Accountant's preferred software confirmed
  • Trial balance, ledger and VAT returns saved as PDF and CSV
  • Full backup kept with its version number
  • Opening balance matches to the cent
  • One period closed in parallel
  • Cancellation in writing, next payment checked
FAQ · 8 questions

Sage alternatives: frequently asked questions

  • Is Sage being discontinued?

Sage 50 isn't. Sage hasn't announced an end date and still sells it in 2026. What closed in the US, at the end of 2024, was Sage Business Cloud Accounting, a different product. Support does focus on recent versions, so an old install is a reason to upgrade or leave, not a deadline.

  • What is the best alternative to Sage?

It depends on your Sage product and country. Xero for UK small businesses, QuickBooks Online in the US, FreeAgent for UK sole traders, NetSuite for Sage Intacct or Sage 200. Our ranking of SMB accounting software scores them side by side.

  • Is Xero better than Sage?

For a UK small business working with an accountant, usually yes: it runs in a browser, starts at £18 a month ex VAT, and most UK firms know it. Sage 50 stays stronger for heavy desktop workflows and stock on one site.

  • Can I move my Sage data to QuickBooks or Xero?

Yes, with limits. For QuickBooks Online UK, Dataswitcher moves up to two years of Sage 50 data, but VAT history arrives as lines. For Xero, the Movemybooks app converts Sage desktop files. In both cases, keep your old reports and a full backup. If you are also weighing QuickBooks, our guide to leaving QuickBooks lists its limits.

  • Is there a free alternative to Sage?

Zoho Books is free up to $50,000 in revenue, and Odoo gives you one app free with unlimited users. FreeAgent is free with some UK business bank accounts. Our accounting software ranking lists the cheapest paid options too.

  • Why did my Sage renewal go up?

UK users report rises from £211 to £315, and packages added at renewal. One customer had a 50% increase cut to 22.6% after complaining. It's worth asking before you accept, and comparing with the prices on this page.

  • Can I keep Sage just to look at old records?

Only while your subscription is active. Once it lapses, you may lose access. Export reports for every year you need to keep, as PDF and CSV, and keep a backup with its version number.

  • What replaces Sage Intacct?

NetSuite is the usual comparison for multi-entity finance. Both are quote only and partner-led, so ask each vendor for a full project price, not just the licence.
