Overview

What changes when Claude can check airfields for you

Airfield Directory is a free, public database of airfields, pilot reports, landing fees and fuel prices for general aviation. With the connector, a private pilot asks Claude about a destination in plain words, and Claude looks it up among more than 40,000 airfields, pulls the current weather and shows the webcam, without a dozen open tabs.

Find the field you half remember. You know the town but not the ICAO code: airfield_search finds airfields by code, name or city, worldwide.

Read the sky before the drive to the hangar. airfield_weather_get brings back live METAR and TAF, with a crosswind analysis per runway and the hazards decoded, so Claude can explain whether the wind suits your aircraft.

See it for yourself. airfield_webcam_image shows the live airfield webcam, a quick check on cloud base or a wet runway.

What Claude cannot do here: the publisher calls its endpoint read-only, so no tool files a pilot report, rates a field or changes anything; reports are posted on the website or through the Telegram bot. Three tools, taxonomy_list, airfield_list_by_h3 and airfield_get, have no description anywhere. And nothing runs by itself: no tool alerts you when a TAF turns. That sort of background watch is an automation tool's job, a different trade; the Integrations hub covers it.

Vocabulary

Five words before you connect

The vocabulary you will meet when you add Airfield Directory to Claude.

Connector
The link you set up once between Claude and an outside service, so Claude can use it while it answers you in the conversation.
Tool
One named capability a connector gives Claude. Claude picks the ones it needs on its own; the directory sheet lists each by name.
Authorization
The service's own sign-in screen, where you grant Claude access. Airfield Directory needs none: its publisher says no authentication is required.
Approval
The confirmation Claude waits for before going ahead with an action, shown in the conversation; per-tool settings can change when it appears.
MCP
The shared standard behind connectors: it is what lets an assistant like Claude query an outside service such as this airfield database.
Connect

Connect Airfield Directory to Claude in three steps

  1. 01

    Find Airfield Directory

Open Claude's settings, go to Customize, then Connectors, and look for Airfield Directory in the list. On a Team or Enterprise workspace, an Owner or Primary Owner enables a connector before members can use it.

  2. 02

    Start the connection

Click Connect on its row and follow the window that opens. If it ever stops answering, use Disconnect and connect it again from the same place in your settings.

  3. 03

    Check what you grant

Look at any authorization screen before you confirm: it belongs to the service and sets what the access covers. Here the publisher says there is no sign-in at all, since the data is public.

Tools

The 6 Airfield Directory tools, by what they do

Airfield Directory gives Claude 6 tools: 3 that read your account, 0 that change something in it, and 3 no official source describes.

Two groups: what Claude reads, and what no official source describes. Names stay exactly as Claude shows them.

  • 3 not documented

What Claude reads (3)

3 tools

Three tools tied to a sentence of the official description.

airfield_weather_get

Fetches live METAR and TAF for an airfield, adds a crosswind analysis for each runway and decodes the hazards, which Claude can then put into plain language.

When it helps
you are a low-hours pilot and want to know if Sunday's wind is within your personal crosswind limit on the runway in use.
Watch out
the publisher says its information is not suitable for flight planning.

airfield_webcam_image

Shows the live image from an airfield's webcam, a visual complement to the coded weather that Claude can describe or let you judge.

When it helps
the METAR looks fine but you want to see the hills behind the field before committing to the trip.

Undocumented (3)

3 tools

The directory publishes these names and nothing else. No official text says what they do, so this page does not guess.

taxonomy_list

Nothing official explains this one. It is listed first on the directory sheet, yet neither the sheet's description nor the publisher's FAQ mentions it by name.

Watch out
the general approval rule applies, unless you switched every tool to Always allow.

airfield_list_by_h3

The sheet publishes this name with no explanation. The directory text mentions geo searches in general terms, but no official sentence ties that to this tool, so its role stays unknown.

Watch out
it falls under the same approval rule as the rest.

airfield_get

No source describes this tool either. Its name appears in the list of six and nowhere else in the publisher's material read for this page.

Watch out
no specific approval is documented for it; the general rule of the approvals block is all there is.
Approvals

What Claude asks before acting

By default, Claude stops and asks for your confirmation before any action it carries out on an account for you. The publisher describes its endpoint as read-only and invites you to set every tool to Always allow so Claude stops prompting.

That choice is yours, and it is per connector: once set, Claude calls these tools without asking. On a Team or Enterprise workspace, owners decide whether members may let some actions through without a prompt, and they can limit what a connector may do for the whole organisation; nobody overrides that from a personal account. Claude always works with the rights of the person who connected and nothing more, and here there is no account behind the connection.

Plans

Which plans include it

None of the 819 sheets in the official directory shows plan availability. That answer, connector by connector, is published nowhere: a real gap in the catalogue.

The general rule is public: remote connectors are open to all users on Claude, Cowork, Claude Desktop and mobile. On Team and Enterprise, an Owner or Primary Owner enables the connector for the organisation before members can connect. Airfield Directory itself is free and needs no account. For the connector's current state, check its sheet in the directory.

Limits

Where this connector stops

A connector is not an automation. Claude calls these tools while it answers you: nothing starts when the weather changes at your destination.

A tool list that only reads is an observed floor, not a guarantee, and the verification badge is not a security audit: Anthropic says on every sheet that it does not choose a publisher's tools. Everything here comes from the directory sheet and Airfield Directory's own FAQ; no Claude help article covers this connector. For a connector that writes into an account, the Claude activecampaign connector page shows the contrast.

FAQ

Claude Airfield Directory connector: common questions

01What can Claude do with the Airfield Directory connector?
Claude can look up airfields and their conditions while it answers you. Three of its six tools are documented: one searches more than 40,000 airfields by ICAO code, name or city, one returns live METAR and TAF with a crosswind analysis per runway, and one shows an airfield's live webcam. The directory also mentions fees, fuel prices, pilot reports and route planning, without tying them to a named tool. Three tools have no description at all.
02Can Claude post a pilot report or change data on Airfield Directory?
No. The publisher describes its endpoint as read-only, and none of the documented tools writes, sends or deletes anything. Pilot reports are posted on the Airfield Directory website or through its Telegram bot, not through Claude, according to the publisher. As with any connector, a read-only list is an observed floor, since an administrator can open actions that appear on no public sheet, but nothing in the official material suggests that.
03Does Claude ask before using Airfield Directory?
By default Claude asks for confirmation before any action it carries out for you. The publisher recommends switching every tool of this connector to Always allow after adding it, so Claude stops prompting each time; that covers the three undocumented tools too. On Team and Enterprise workspaces, owners decide whether members may let actions run without a prompt, and they can restrict what the connector may do for the whole organisation.
04Which Claude plans include the Airfield Directory connector?
No official source publishes plan availability connector by connector, and none of the 819 directory sheets shows it. The general rule says remote connectors are open to all users on Claude, Cowork, Claude Desktop and mobile, with an Owner or Primary Owner enabling them first on Team and Enterprise. Airfield Directory itself is free, public and needs no account. The directory sheet remains the only place showing the connector's current state for you.
05Does Claude see my Airfield Directory account?
No account is involved. The publisher says no authentication is required and calls the service free and public, so the connector only reaches public airfield data. Claude always works with the rights of the person who connected and nothing beyond them. Since there is no sign-in, there is also nothing to revoke on the service side: removing the connector from your Claude settings is enough to cut Claude off from it, as with any connector you no longer want.
06Can I use Claude's answers to plan a flight?
Not as your only source. Airfield Directory states that its information is provided without warranty and without liability, is not suitable for flight planning, and may be inaccurate or outdated. Some pilot reports were generated with AI in August 2025 and are marked as such. Treat what Claude tells you as a first look at the destination, then check the official weather, notices and the airfield operator before you actually fly.
07Claude or an automation tool for Airfield Directory?
They do different jobs, so pick by use rather than by ranking. Claude with this connector suits a conversation before a trip: you ask about a field, its weather and its webcam, and it explains what it finds. An automation tool runs in the background on a trigger or a schedule, without you asking. This connector has no background mode, so no alert reaches you unless you ask Claude a question.
