Overview

What changes when Claude can handle your PDFs

With this desktop extension, you ask Claude in plain words, it sends the file to the Avanquest PDF API, and the result lands at the path you named on your computer. Each input file can weigh up to 10 MB, and Avanquest deletes processed results from its servers 10 minutes after completion.

Get an editable copy. Ask for a Word version of a report and pdf_convert_to_word produces the .docx; PowerPoint, Excel, plain text and JSON follow the same pattern.

Assemble and trim documents. pdf_merge joins files in the order you give, pdf_split cuts one into separate parts, and the page tools delete, rotate or resize pages.

Prepare a file for sharing. pdf_compress shrinks it at the quality level you choose, pdf_password_protect locks it, and pdf_add_watermark stamps text or an image such as a CONFIDENTIAL mark at 45 degrees.

Now the limits. Each input file is capped at 10 MB and passes through Avanquest's servers, which delete results 10 minutes after processing. Four of the listed tools have no description in any source, so this page says nothing about them. And nothing runs on its own: no tool reacts when a file appears in a folder. That kind of trigger belongs to automation platforms, covered from the Integrations hub.

Vocabulary

Five words before you start

The vocabulary around this extension, briefly.

Connector
The link you set up once between Claude and an outside service, so Claude can use it while it answers you in a conversation.
Tool
One named action the connector gives Claude. Claude decides by itself which tools to call, and the directory lists them by name.
Authorization
The access you grant once so Claude can use a service. For this extension, it is the Avanquest API key you paste during setup.
Approval
The confirmation Claude waits for before an action that changes something, shown in the conversation at the moment it applies.
MCP
The shared standard behind connectors: it lets an assistant such as Claude call an outside service like the Avanquest PDF API.

Set up Avanquest PDF API Extension in three steps

  1. 01

    Find the extension in Claude

In Claude Desktop, open the settings, go to Customize, then Connectors, and look up Avanquest PDF API Extension. It is a desktop extension, installed on Claude Desktop. On Team or Enterprise, an Owner or Primary Owner enables it first.

  2. 02

    Start the connection

Click Connect on its row and provide what the service asks for, here an Avanquest API key rather than a web sign-in. If the extension stops answering later, Disconnect it and connect it again.

  3. 03

    Know what the access covers

The service, not Claude, decides what the access reaches. Here, files you point Claude to are uploaded to the Avanquest PDF API for processing, under Avanquest's privacy policy, then the result is saved locally.

Tools

The 22 tools, by what they do to a file

Avanquest PDF API Extension gives Claude 22 tools: 1 that read your account, 17 that change something in it, and 4 no official source describes.

One reads, seventeen produce a new document, four remain unexplained. Tool names stay as Claude shows them.

Undocumented (4)

4 tools

The directory lists these four names and nothing else. No Avanquest page describes them, and we will not guess from a name.

pdf_insight

This name sits in the directory list and nowhere else in Avanquest's documentation, neither on its MCP page nor in its feature list. What it takes as input and what it returns are not stated by any official source.

Watch out
the general approval rule applies to it like any other tool.

pdf_document_extract

Listed by the directory, absent from the feature list Avanquest publishes for the extension. No official text explains its input, its output or whether it touches the original file in any way.

Watch out
nothing is known about it beyond its name; the approvals rule applies.

pdf_ocr

The name appears in the directory, yet Avanquest's MCP page and the project's README never mention it. Inferring a capability from the name alone would be guesswork, and this page does not do it.

Watch out
the approvals section below covers it all the same.

sign_pdf

Another name the directory shows with no matching sentence anywhere official. The feature list, the usage examples and the privacy section of Avanquest's documentation stay silent about it too. No source says whether it reads a document or changes one, and the general approvals rule is all that covers it.

Approvals

What Claude checks with you first

By default, Claude stops and asks before each action it carries out on an account for someone, right in the conversation.

On Team and Enterprise, owners decide whether members may let some actions through without a prompt each time, and they can limit what a connector may do for the whole organization, for example keeping reading and blocking writing. Claude works with the rights of the person connected and nothing beyond. With this extension, the practical question is what leaves your computer: every file Claude processes is uploaded to the Avanquest PDF API, and results stay on Avanquest's servers for up to 10 minutes.

Plans

Which plans include it

None of the 819 sheets in the official directory shows plan availability. That answer is published nowhere, connector by connector.

The general rule is public: remote connectors are open to all users on Claude, Cowork, Claude Desktop and mobile, while desktop extensions like this one install on Claude Desktop. On Team and Enterprise, an Owner or Primary Owner enables a connector before members use it. For the live state, check this extension's sheet in the official directory.

Limits

Where this extension stops

A connector is not an automation. Claude calls these tools while it answers you, so nothing happens when a PDF lands in your downloads folder.

The partner badge in the directory is not a security audit, and Anthropic states on every sheet that it neither picks a publisher's tools nor guarantees their behavior. Only Avanquest documents this extension; no Claude help page covers it. Avanquest also recommends a personal preference telling Claude to discover its tools at the start of each conversation involving files. The same directory rules apply on the Claude affinity connector page.

FAQ

Questions about the Claude Avanquest PDF API Extension connector

01What can Claude do with the Avanquest PDF API Extension connector?
Claude can convert, assemble and secure PDFs from a conversation in Claude Desktop. The extension lists 22 tools: conversions to Word, PowerPoint, Excel, text and JSON, conversions from HTML, images and text into PDF, merging, splitting, compressing, deleting, rotating and resizing pages, password protection and its removal, watermarking, and an analysis of tags, forms, signatures and attachments. Four more tools appear in the directory with no description in any official source.
02Can Claude change or create files with it?
Yes, that is most of what it does. Seventeen of the documented tools produce a new file from yours: a converted copy, a merged or split document, a compressed, rotated, resized or trimmed PDF, a protected or unlocked version, or a watermarked one. Avanquest's examples show the result saved to the path you name. The input passes through the Avanquest PDF API, limited to 10 MB per file, and processed results are deleted from Avanquest's servers after 10 minutes.
03Does Claude ask before it processes a PDF?
No source describes a confirmation for any tool of this extension. The general Claude rule applies: by default it asks before an action it takes on someone's behalf. On Team and Enterprise, owners decide whether members can let some actions run without a prompt and can block writing for the whole organization. Keep in mind that each processed file is uploaded to Avanquest's servers, which is worth checking before sending sensitive documents.
04Which plans is the Avanquest PDF extension available on?
No official source publishes plan availability connector by connector, and the directory sheets do not show it. The published rule is that remote connectors are open to all users on Claude, Cowork, Claude Desktop and mobile, while desktop extensions like this one install on Claude Desktop. On Team and Enterprise, an Owner or Primary Owner enables a connector first. Separately, Avanquest requires its own API key for the extension, which it offers for free on its developer portal.
05Do my PDFs leave my computer?
Yes. Avanquest states that files you send are processed through the Avanquest PDF API and fall under its privacy policy. Processed files are deleted automatically from Avanquest's servers 10 minutes after completion, and the result is saved back on your computer at the path you gave. For reaching files on your disk, Avanquest recommends pairing it with Claude's Filesystem extension, which handles local file access, so check which folders that extension can open.
06Why does Claude refuse a large scan?
Because Avanquest caps each input file at 10 MB. A heavy scanned document or a long image-rich report can exceed that, and the extension will not process it. The workaround stays outside this extension's documented scope: reduce the file beforehand, or split it with another tool, then send the parts. Results are also only kept for 10 minutes on Avanquest's side, so save them where you want before moving on.
07Claude or an automation tool for PDF processing?
They answer different needs, so pick by job. Claude with this extension suits on-demand work: you describe the file and the result you want, it converts or edits and saves the output. Nothing happens after the conversation ends, and no tool watches a folder for new PDFs. When every incoming invoice must be converted or merged automatically, that is the role of an automation platform rather than of this extension.
