Overview

What the Claude iManage Work connector changes for a law firm

Rather than clicking through iManage Work libraries to find a precedent, you ask Claude. It searches full text, names and comments on its own, reads the document it lands on and discusses it with you in the conversation. Per the publisher, documents stay in iManage with no bulk export, and access is permission-bound and auditable.

Find a precedent. You need a non-compete clause already negotiated: search combs document text and workspaces, then download_document pulls the content so Claude can quote the relevant passage.

Pick up a live matter. get_recent_workspaces and get_recent_documents bring back what you opened lately, and get_container_children lays out what a folder holds.

Trace a document's history. get_document_versions shows who changed what and when, version by version, while get_document_profile tells you which client and matter it belongs to.

What Claude does not do with this connector: by default the sheet exposes no tool to create a folder, move, upload or rename a document. iManage's documentation does describe some; the limits section sets the two sources side by side. Nothing runs on its own either: no tool wakes up when a document is filed. For that kind of tracking you need an automation tool, a different job; the Integrations hub covers that side.

Vocabulary

The vocabulary in one minute

Five words you will meet while connecting iManage Work.

Connector
The link you set up once between Claude and a service, so Claude can work with it while it answers you.
Tool
One named capability the connector opens to Claude. Claude picks the ones it needs, and the directory sheet lists them all.
Authorization
The service's own sign-in screen, where you hand Claude the access it will use from then on. Granted once, and taken back the same way.
Directory
Claude's official catalogue: every connector gets a sheet with its publisher, its purpose and the full list of its tools.
MCP
The shared standard behind connectors: it is what lets an assistant like Claude talk to an outside service.
Connect

Connect iManage Work to Claude in three steps

  1. 01

Find iManage Work in your settings

Open Claude's settings, go to Customize then Connectors, and locate iManage Work in the list. On a Team or Enterprise workspace, an Owner or Primary Owner has to enable it before you can sign in.

  2. 02

    Start the connection

Hit Connect on its row, then sign in through the window that the service opens on its own side. If the link ever breaks, use Disconnect and connect it again.

  3. 03

    Review the authorization screen

Read the authorization screen before you accept: it belongs to the service, and it sets what the access covers. You can also revoke that access later from your iManage Work account.

Tools

The 14 iManage Work read tools

iManage Work gives Claude 14 tools: 14 that read your account, 0 that change something in it.

All 14 tools on the sheet read: search, lookups, profiles, versions. None writes to iManage. Names stay exactly as Claude shows them.

What Claude reads (14)

14 tools

Fourteen tools that look through your documents and matters without touching them.

download_document

Pulls the text content of a document by its ID, in its latest version. Claude can then summarize it, compare it with another draft or extract a clause.

When it helps
you want the gist of a 40-page term sheet before a client call.
Watch out
it needs the document ID; give Claude the document name first and ask it to look the ID up.

fetch

Returns the text of a document identified by its ID, much like the download tool but under a different name. Like the other ID-based tools, it starts from an identifier, not a name.

When it helps
a partner mentioned a document reference in a meeting and you want to read the content without opening iManage.

Sourcedocs.imanage.com · October 1, 2026 ↗

get_container_children

Lists what a workspace, tab or folder holds: subfolders, documents and tabs. Each call returns at most 500 items, and Claude calls it again to walk through the rest.

When it helps
you want to see what has already been filed in the folder for a new litigation matter.

Sourcedocs.imanage.com · October 1, 2026 ↗

get_document_profile

Reports the properties attached to a document, including its client and workspace information. Think of it as the file's identity card rather than its text.

When it helps
you have a memo open and need to know which client and matter it belongs to.

Sourcedocs.imanage.com · October 1, 2026 ↗

get_document_versions

Brings back a document's full history: version numbers, authors, modification dates, file sizes and comments, up to 1000 versions.

When it helps
seeing which versions of a draft agreement came between the version sent to the other side and today's.

Sourcedocs.imanage.com · October 1, 2026 ↗

get_libraries

Lists every iManage library you have access to. iManage scopes it to the signed-in user.

When it helps
you just joined the firm and do not yet know which document databases are open to you, and want the list before asking Claude to search any of them.

Sourcedocs.imanage.com · October 1, 2026 ↗

get_recent_documents

Returns the documents you accessed recently, the most recently opened first.

When it helps
picking up on Monday morning exactly where you left off on Friday night, without hunting through libraries for the files you had open, even when you no longer remember a document's exact name.

Sourcedocs.imanage.com · October 1, 2026 ↗

get_recent_workspaces

Returns the workspaces, or matters, you opened lately. iManage uses both words for the same thing here.

When it helps
you are juggling several matters at once and want to get straight back to the one you were working on yesterday afternoon.

Sourcedocs.imanage.com · October 1, 2026 ↗

get_rows_from_csv_document

Reads every row of a CSV document stored in iManage. Claude can then sort, count or summarize that data in the conversation.

When it helps
a data room tracking sheet is filed as CSV and you want to know how many items still need review.

Sourcedocs.imanage.com · October 1, 2026 ↗

get_user_information

Reports information about users of the iManage Work system. With an empty query it describes the signed-in user.

When it helps
you want to know who is responsible for a matter before you email them; an empty query also lets you check which profile Claude is working under.

Sourcedocs.imanage.com · October 1, 2026 ↗

get_workspace_profile

Returns a workspace's profile from its ID: the set of properties describing the matter or the client it gathers together.

When it helps
double-checking the client and subject of a matter before discussing it in a meeting, without opening iManage at all.

Sourcedocs.imanage.com · October 1, 2026 ↗

get_workspace_templates

Lists the workspace templates in a library, those predefined folder structures that keep legal matter files consistent and organized.

When it helps
the knowledge manager wants to see which templates exist before standardizing how matters are opened.
Watch out
this tool only lists templates; no other tool on the current sheet puts them to use.

Sourcedocs.imanage.com · October 1, 2026 ↗

search_workspaces

Finds workspaces matching the criteria provided, for example to learn who owns a given matter. Claude can follow up with that owner's user details.

When it helps
you need to reach the lead on a client matter but only know the matter name.

Approvals

What Claude asks before it acts

By default, Claude stops and asks for your go-ahead before each action it takes on an account for you. The 14 tools on the sheet only read, but the rule stays in place.

On a Team or Enterprise workspace, owners decide whether a member may let some actions through without confirmation. They can also cap what a connector may do across the organization, keeping reads and shutting writes for instance, and nobody bypasses that from a personal account. On the iManage side, the publisher describes permission-bound, auditable access: Claude only sees what your iManage permissions already open to you.

Plans

Which plans it is available on

None of the 819 sheets in the directory shows availability by plan. Connector by connector, that information is not published anywhere: a genuine gap in the catalogue.

The general rule is published: remote connectors are open to all users on Claude, Cowork, Claude Desktop and mobile. On Team and Enterprise, an Owner or Primary Owner turns the connector on for the organization before members can connect. For the current state, check the iManage Work sheet in the official directory.

Limits

Where this connector stops

A connector is not an automation. Claude calls these tools while it answers you: nothing fires when a document is filed or a version is added.

By default the sheet exposes only reads, but that is an observed floor: an admin can open actions that appear on no public sheet, and iManage does document some. The partner badge is not a security audit, and Anthropic says so on every sheet: it does not choose the publisher's tools and does not vouch for their behavior. This connector is documented by its sheet and iManage's help pages alone. To compare with another connector's page, see the Claude agility-cms connector.

Two official sources disagree

Can the iManage Work connector write to iManage?

What this page followsThe sheet is what Claude exposes as of October 1, 2026: read only. iManage's undated page describes a wider scope that does not show on the sheet, so this page presents no write tool as available. Check the tool list and the directory sheet on your own account.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about the Claude iManage Work connector

01What can Claude do with the iManage Work connector?
Claude can search, read and browse your iManage Work content. Its 14 tools cover natural-language search over full text and workspaces, reading a document's text, listing a folder's contents, recent documents and workspaces, profiles, version history, CSV rows, libraries, workspace templates and user details. Claude uses them during the conversation to dig up a precedent or get back into a matter you had set aside, all without opening iManage or changing a single file.
02Can Claude create, move or delete documents in iManage?
Not with the tools on the sheet: by default it exposes 14 read tools only. iManage's documentation does describe 7 write tools, to create workspaces, folders and document relations, update profiles, and move and upload documents, but they do not appear on the sheet read on October 1, 2026. No delete tool is described anywhere. Check the tool list on your account before counting on any write, and expect only reads until the sheet changes.
03Does Claude ask before it acts?
By default, Claude asks for confirmation before each action it takes on an account for you. No source describes a confirmation specific to any of the 14 read tools, so the general rule is what covers them. On a Team or Enterprise workspace, owners decide whether members may let certain actions through without being asked again, and they can shut writes for the whole organization. A member cannot reverse that choice from a personal account.
04Which plans is it available on?
No official source publishes plan availability for this connector, or for any other. The general rule is that remote connectors are open to all users on Claude, Cowork, Claude Desktop and mobile, with an Owner enabling them first on Team and Enterprise. The iManage Work sheet in the directory is the only up-to-date reference; check it from your own account before rolling the connector out across the firm or a single practice group.
05Does Claude see every document in the firm?
No, Claude works with your access and nothing more. iManage describes permission-bound, auditable access: a document or workspace your profile cannot open stays closed in the conversation. Per the publisher, documents stay in iManage with no bulk export or replication to another system. On the Claude side, a Team or Enterprise owner can also restrict what the connector may do for the whole organization, and individual members cannot lift that restriction.
06Why does Claude need a document ID?
Several tools, such as download, profile or versions, work on an item's ID rather than its name, which is how iManage designed them. iManage suggests first giving Claude the name of the workspace, folder or document and asking it to fetch the ID, then reusing that ID in every later question about the same item. That way you never have to look the identifier up in iManage yourself, or copy it from one screen to another.
07Claude or an automation tool for iManage Work?
They do different jobs. Claude searches and reads your documents when you ask a question, and helps you get to an answer inside a discussion. An automation tool is meant to run a task on its own in the background, for instance every time a document lands in a folder. The connector never starts anything by itself: it answers when you call on it and watches no folder between two questions.
