Overview

What changes when Claude can read what you have read

Readwise holds years of highlights and a Reader inbox that keeps growing. The problem is getting anything back out at the right moment. With the connector, you ask Claude a question and it searches your highlights and the full text of your saved documents by meaning, then answers from what you actually read, with the source attached.

An answer built from your own reading. readwise_search_highlights and reader_search_documents combine meaning-based and keyword search. Ask what you saved on pricing strategy and Claude pulls the passages, then reader_get_document_details opens the full article when a highlight is not enough.

An inbox triaged for you. reader_move_documents shifts items between inbox, later, shortlist, archive and feed, while reader_add_tags_to_document labels them. Tell Claude to shelve everything older than your last project and tag the keepers.

Notes that finally get written. reader_set_highlight_notes attaches a comment to a highlight and readwise_create_highlights saves new ones, so a thought from the conversation lands next to the passage that sparked it.

Now the part the sheet skips. No source says whether Claude confirms before any of these changes, so the general approval rule is all you have; a delete is a delete. Bulk metadata edits stop at 50 documents per call. And nothing runs on its own: no tool fires when you save an article or highlight a line. For that kind of background job, an automation tool is the right trade, and our Integrations hub covers it. Other apps get the same breakdown, for instance the Claude asana connector.

Vocabulary

Five words before you plug it in

The vocabulary you will meet on the way.

Connector
The link you set up once between Claude and an account you already have, so Claude can work in it while it answers you.
Tool
One named job the connector opens to Claude. Claude picks the ones it needs mid-answer; the directory sheet lists them by name.
Authorization
Readwise's own sign-in screen, where you hand Claude the access it will use afterwards. Given once per person, and you can take it back.
Approval
The confirmation Claude waits for before doing something that changes an account, shown in the conversation when it matters.
MCP
The shared standard connectors are built on: it is what lets an assistant like Claude talk to an outside service such as Readwise.
Connect

Connect Readwise to Claude in three steps

  1. 01

    Find Readwise in Claude

In Claude's settings, open Customize, then Connectors, and look for Readwise. On a Team or Enterprise workspace, an Owner or Primary Owner has to enable the connector first; then each member connects on their own.

  2. 02

    Start the connection

Click Connect on its row, then sign in with your Readwise account in the window Readwise opens. If the link breaks one day, hit Disconnect and connect again from scratch.

  3. 03

    Read the authorization screen

Before you accept, read what the screen asks for. It belongs to Readwise, not to Claude, and it sets what the access covers. You can also withdraw that access later from your Readwise account.

Tools

The 22 tools of the Claude Readwise connector

Readwise gives Claude 22 tools: 9 that read your account, 13 that change something in it.

Two groups: what Claude reads and what it changes. Every tool has a line in Readwise's own documentation. Names stay as Claude shows them, in English.

What Claude reads (9)

9 tools

Nine tools that look through your highlights and documents without touching them.

readwise_search_highlights

Looks through your Readwise highlights with a hybrid search that mixes meaning and exact words, so a vague question still finds the right passage.

When it helps
you remember an idea about habit loops but not the book it came from.
Watch out
it covers highlights, not the full text of Reader documents; that is the other search tool.

Sourcereadwise.io · September 30, 2026 ↗

readwise_list_highlights

Returns highlights newest first, narrowed by book, tag, date range and other filters.

When it helps
you want everything you highlighted last month before drafting your monthly note.
Watch out
it lists rather than searches, so pair it with filters or the output gets long.

Sourcereadwise.io · September 30, 2026 ↗

readwise_get_daily_review

Brings today's daily review: the highlights Readwise picked for you by spaced repetition.

When it helps
you want to go through your review in the chat and discuss a few of them.
Watch out
the selection is Readwise's, not Claude's.

Sourcereadwise.io · September 30, 2026 ↗

reader_search_documents

Runs a hybrid search across the full text of your Reader library, not just titles.

When it helps
you saved a report on retail margins months ago and only remember one statistic from it.
Watch out
it reaches whole documents; highlights have their own search tool.

Sourcereadwise.io · September 30, 2026 ↗

reader_list_documents

Shows Reader documents newest first, filtered by location, category or tag, so Claude can see what sits where in your library.

When it helps
you want to see what is still sitting in your shortlist.
Watch out
filters keep the answer readable when the library is large.

Sourcereadwise.io · September 30, 2026 ↗

reader_get_document_details

Fetches a document's metadata and its full content as Markdown, so Claude reads the whole piece.

When it helps
a highlight is not enough and you want Claude to summarize the entire essay.
Watch out
long documents mean long reads for Claude.

Sourcereadwise.io · September 30, 2026 ↗

reader_list_tags

Returns every tag used in your Reader library, the full vocabulary you have built up over the years of saving articles.

When it helps
before tidying, you want to see which tags already exist to avoid near-duplicates.
Watch out
it lists tag names only, not the documents behind them.

Sourcereadwise.io · September 30, 2026 ↗

reader_get_document_highlights

Returns all the highlights made on a single Reader document, in one list Claude can quote or summarize.

When it helps
you want the key passages of an article you read last week, without the rest.
Watch out
it works one document at a time.

Sourcereadwise.io · September 30, 2026 ↗

reader_get_export_documents_status

Checks where a Reader export stands and, once the ZIP is ready, returns the link to download it, so you can grab the whole file.

When it helps
you started an export earlier and want the file.
Watch out
it only reports on an export already started.

What Claude changes (13)

13 tools

Thirteen tools that save, tag, move, edit or delete. No source describes a confirmation for them: the general rule below applies.

readwise_create_highlights

Approval: see the rule

Saves one or several new highlights in Readwise, attached to a book or article if you want.

What Claude asks for
Readwise's page is silent on any prompt before new highlights are saved, so the general approval rule takes over.
When it helps
a quote came up in the conversation and you want it filed with the rest of your reading.
Watch out
attach it to the right book, or it floats on its own.

Sourcereadwise.io · September 30, 2026 ↗

readwise_update_highlight

Approval: see the rule

Edits a highlight's text, note, location or tags in place.

What Claude asks for
no text describes a check before a highlight is rewritten; the section on approvals covers it.
When it helps
you mistyped a quote while highlighting on paper and want it corrected.
Watch out
give Claude the exact corrected wording rather than a paraphrase.

Sourcereadwise.io · September 30, 2026 ↗

readwise_delete_highlight

Approval: see the rule

Removes a highlight from Readwise.

What Claude asks for
no source says Claude pauses before this deletion in particular, so the default rule is your only safeguard.
When it helps
a duplicate from two reading apps keeps showing in your daily review.
Watch out
no source mentions a way to get it back, so treat it as final.

Sourcereadwise.io · September 30, 2026 ↗

reader_create_document

Approval: see the rule

Adds a new URL, or a piece of HTML or plain text, to your Reader library.

What Claude asks for
whether a prompt appears before a document is saved to Reader is not documented; fall back on the general rule.
When it helps
Claude found a useful article during the chat and you want to read it later in Reader.
Watch out
it lands in your library like any other save, so your inbox grows.

Sourcereadwise.io · September 30, 2026 ↗

reader_add_tags_to_document

Approval: see the rule

Adds one or more tags to a Reader document.

What Claude asks for
tagging a document carries no published confirmation of its own, which leaves the rule further down in charge.
When it helps
you want every article about onboarding labelled for a project.
Watch out
tags you type freely can drift from the ones you already use; list them first.

Sourcereadwise.io · September 30, 2026 ↗

reader_remove_tags_from_document

Approval: see the rule

Removes tags from a Reader document.

What Claude asks for
no documented prompt belongs to untagging; the default approval rule applies.
When it helps
a batch of articles got the wrong project tag.
Watch out
only the tags go, the document stays.

Sourcereadwise.io · September 30, 2026 ↗

reader_move_documents

Approval: see the rule

Moves documents between Reader locations: inbox, later, shortlist, archive and feed.

What Claude asks for
a confirmation before documents change location is described nowhere, so count on the general rule.
When it helps
your inbox overflows and you want everything older than a quarter sent to archive.
Watch out
a wrong location hides a document from where you expect it.

Sourcereadwise.io · September 30, 2026 ↗

reader_bulk_edit_document_metadata

Approval: see the rule

Edits metadata such as title, author or category on up to 50 documents in one go.

What Claude asks for
with fifty documents at stake per call, it helps to know that no source describes a dedicated prompt: only the general rule applies.
When it helps
imported newsletters all carry a messy author field you want cleaned up.
Watch out
50 documents per call is the ceiling Readwise gives.

Sourcereadwise.io · September 30, 2026 ↗

reader_add_tags_to_highlight

Approval: see the rule

Adds tags to a highlight inside a Reader document.

What Claude asks for
Readwise documents no prompt before a highlight gets its tag; the general rule decides.
When it helps
you are building a swipe file of strong opening lines.
Watch out
it tags the highlight, not the document around it.

Sourcereadwise.io · September 30, 2026 ↗

reader_remove_tags_from_highlight

Approval: see the rule

Strips one or more tags off a highlight in a Reader document.

What Claude asks for
nothing published covers a check before a tag leaves a highlight, so the rule below applies.
When it helps
a highlight was tagged for the wrong talk you are preparing.
Watch out
the highlight itself stays untouched.

Sourcereadwise.io · September 30, 2026 ↗

reader_set_highlight_notes

Approval: see the rule

Sets the note attached to a highlight in a Reader document.

What Claude asks for
no source describes a confirmation before a note is set, even when it replaces an older one; see the approvals section.
When it helps
you want the takeaway from the chat saved next to the passage that sparked it.
Watch out
setting a note replaces any note already there.

Sourcereadwise.io · September 30, 2026 ↗

reader_create_highlight

Approval: see the rule

Creates a highlight on a Reader document by pointing at the exact text to mark.

What Claude asks for
marking text in a document has no documented prompt of its own; the general approval rule covers it.
When it helps
Claude spotted the sentence that answers your question and you want it marked in the article.
Watch out
the text must match the document exactly.

Sourcereadwise.io · September 30, 2026 ↗

reader_export_documents

Approval: see the rule

Starts an export of all your Reader documents as a ZIP of Markdown files.

What Claude asks for
a confirmation before the export starts is described nowhere, so the default rule covers it.
When it helps
you want a full backup of your library before reorganizing it.
Watch out
the export runs in the background; a second tool fetches its status and link.

Approvals

What Claude asks before acting

By default, Claude stops and asks for your go-ahead before any action it takes on an account for you. The request shows up in the conversation, at the moment it matters.

On Team and Enterprise workspaces, owners decide whether a member may let certain actions through without being asked every time. They can also cap what a connector may do across the organization, leaving reading open and closing writing, and nobody gets around that from their own account. Claude works with your rights and nothing more: what your Readwise account cannot reach, Claude cannot either.

Plans

Which plans include it

Of the 819 sheets in the official directory, none shows availability by plan. The per-connector answer is published nowhere, a real gap in the catalogue.

The general rule is public: remote connectors are open to all users on Claude, Cowork, Claude Desktop and mobile, and desktop extensions install on Claude Desktop. On Team and Enterprise, an Owner or Primary Owner turns the connector on for the organization before members can connect. For the current state, open the Readwise sheet in the directory from your own account.

Limits

Where this connector stops

A connector is not an automation. Claude calls these tools while it answers you; nothing starts when you save an article or highlight a line.

This connector is documented only by its publisher: neither Claude's help center nor Anthropic's developer docs cover it. The tool list is an observed floor, not a promise, since an administrator can open actions no public sheet shows. The partner badge is not a security audit, and Anthropic says on every sheet that it does not decide which tools a publisher exposes. Plug in publishers you trust, here Readwise itself.

FAQ

FAQ on the Claude Readwise connector

01What can Claude do with the Readwise connector?
Claude can search, read and reorganize your Readwise highlights and Reader library. On the reading side, it runs hybrid searches over highlights and full documents, lists them with filters, opens a document in Markdown, fetches your daily review and lists your tags. On the writing side, it creates, edits and deletes highlights, saves new documents, moves them between locations, tags and untags, sets highlight notes, bulk-edits metadata and starts a full export.
02Can Claude change or delete things in Readwise?
Yes, thirteen of the twenty-two tools change your account. Claude can create, update and delete highlights, save documents to Reader, move them between inbox, later, shortlist, archive and feed, add or remove tags, set notes on highlights, edit metadata on up to fifty documents at once and start an export. No source describes a way to recover a deleted highlight, so a deletion is best treated as final. Tags and locations, by contrast, can simply be changed back.
03Does Claude ask before it changes my library?
By default, yes: Claude asks for confirmation before each action it takes on an account for you. No source describes a confirmation specific to any Readwise tool, so that default rule covers every change, deletions included. On Team and Enterprise workspaces, owners decide whether members can let certain actions through without being asked, and they can close writing for the whole organization. That setting applies to everyone and nobody lifts it from their own account.
04Which plans is it available on?
No official source publishes plan availability connector by connector, and none of the 819 directory sheets shows it. The general rule opens remote connectors to all users on Claude, Cowork, Claude Desktop and mobile. On Team and Enterprise, an Owner or Primary Owner must enable the connector before members can connect. The Readwise sheet in the directory, opened from your own account, is the only place that shows the current state.
05Does Claude see my whole reading history?
It sees what your Readwise account sees, nothing more. The tools reach your highlights, your Reader documents with their full text, your tags and your daily review, so in practice that is a lot. That access is granted once, per person, on Readwise's own sign-in screen. On a shared workspace, an owner can also restrict what the connector may do for everyone. And you can withdraw the access from your Readwise account whenever you decide it is time.
06Can Claude clean up hundreds of Reader documents at once?
Partly. The bulk metadata tool edits title, author, category and similar fields on up to fifty documents per call, so a larger clean-up runs in several passes. Moving documents between locations also works on several documents at once, while tagging goes one document at a time. Every one of these changes falls under the general approval rule, because no source describes a confirmation specific to them, so the default of asking before acting applies to each batch you launch.
07Claude or an automation tool for Readwise?
They do different jobs, so choose by the task. Claude works inside a conversation: you ask, it searches, sums up, tags or moves, and nothing happens once you stop typing. It does not react on its own when a new article lands in Reader. For a job that fires in the background on every save, that is the role of an automation tool. For on-demand answers and triage from your reading, the connector fits.
