Overview

Why plug YouTrack into Claude

Instead of switching to the tracker, building a query and clicking through tickets, you ask in the conversation and the connector reads or updates YouTrack for you, with your own permissions. JetBrains documents every tool, so you know exactly which ones only look and which ones change issues, articles or time records.

A status check without the tracker. search_issues runs a YouTrack query over your projects, get_issue opens the ticket that matters, and get_issue_comments lays out the discussion so you can answer with the full picture.

Triage done in the conversation. create_issue files a bug in the right project, change_issue_assignee hands it over, manage_issue_tags flags it, and link_issues ties it to the ticket it depends on.

Docs and time kept current. create_article and update_article turn a summary into a knowledge base page, while log_work records the time you spent on an issue.

What it will not do: see projects or issues your account cannot reach, or items your admins hide from AI tools, and nothing fires on its own when a ticket changes state. Background reactions of that kind are an automation tool's job; the Integrations hub gathers that side, and the Claude connectors hub lists the others.

Vocabulary

The vocabulary in one minute

Five words you will meet while connecting YouTrack.

Connector
The link you set up once between Claude and an account you already have, so Claude can work in it while it answers you.
Tool
One named action a connector opens to Claude. It picks the tools it needs on its own; the directory sheet lists them by name.
Authorization
YouTrack's own approval page, where you grant Claude the access it will use. Given once per person, and it can be taken back.
Approval
The confirmation Claude waits for before going ahead with something that changes your account, shown in the conversation.
MCP
The shared standard connectors are built on: it is what lets an assistant such as Claude talk to an outside service.
Connect

Connect YouTrack to Claude in three steps

  1. 01

    Find YouTrack in your settings

Open Claude's settings, go to Customize, then Connectors, and look for YouTrack. On a Team or Enterprise workspace, an Owner or Primary Owner has to enable it for the organization before each member can connect.

  2. 02

    Start the connection

Click Connect on its row, then sign in to YouTrack in the window it opens. JetBrains asks for your site's original address ending in youtrack.cloud, even if your team uses a custom domain day to day.

  3. 03

    Approve on the YouTrack page

Read the authorization page before you approve: it is YouTrack's, not Claude's, and it sets what the access covers. If the link breaks later, Disconnect and connect again.

Tools

The 23 tools, sorted by what they do

YouTrack gives Claude 23 tools: 13 that read your account, 10 that change something in it.

Two groups: what Claude reads, and what it changes. Names stay in English, exactly as Claude shows them.

What Claude reads (13)

13 tools

Thirteen tools that look up issues, articles, projects, groups and people without changing them.

find_projects

Looks up projects whose name contains a piece of text, ignoring case, and hands back just their ID and name so the right one can be picked for a closer look.

When it helps
you remember a project only as "something with CRM in it" and need its exact name before filing anything there.

Sourcejetbrains.com · September 17, 2026 ↗

find_user

Matches a teammate by username or email and returns their profile: username, full name, email and local time zone.

When it helps
you are about to hand an issue to someone and want to confirm who sits behind an email address first.

Sourcejetbrains.com · September 17, 2026 ↗

find_user_groups

Searches user groups and project teams whose names include a given string, case-insensitive, with results served page by page as the list grows.

When it helps
you need the exact name of the design team before restricting who can see a new article.

Sourcejetbrains.com · September 17, 2026 ↗

get_article

Opens one knowledge base article in full: title, content, sub-articles, tags and visibility settings, with line-by-line scrolling when the text runs long.

When it helps
a long guide lives in the knowledge base and you want it read back in the chat, sub-articles included.

Sourcejetbrains.com · September 17, 2026 ↗

get_current_user

Returns the account the connector is signed in with: username, email, full name and time zone. Those are the rights every request runs with.

When it helps
you are not sure which YouTrack identity you authorized when you connected, and want to check it before going further in the conversation.

Sourcejetbrains.com · September 17, 2026 ↗

get_issue

Brings back one issue or draft in detail, from summary, description and reporter to tags, votes and custom fields such as type, state, assignee and priority.

When it helps
you have an issue ID and want its current state and assignee without opening the tracker.

Sourcejetbrains.com · September 17, 2026 ↗

get_issue_comments

Lists the comments on an issue with the details of each one, paginated with an offset and a limit when the thread is long.

When it helps
a bug has a long discussion and you want the latest exchanges laid out before replying.

Sourcejetbrains.com · September 17, 2026 ↗

get_issue_fields_schema

Describes the custom fields of a project and their allowed values. YouTrack says it must be used to supply the right fields and values whenever an issue is filed or edited.

When it helps
you ask which fields are mandatory in a project before opening a ticket there.
Watch out
Some fields can be required for creation, which is why this lookup comes first.

Sourcejetbrains.com · September 17, 2026 ↗

get_project

Retrieves the full details of one project, including the work types and work item attributes needed before logging time against one of its issues later on.

When it helps
you want the configuration of a customer portal project before filing work in it.

Sourcejetbrains.com · September 17, 2026 ↗

get_saved_issue_searches

Returns the searches you marked as favorites in YouTrack, whose queries can then be fed straight into an issue search.

When it helps
you already built a "open bugs assigned to me" view in the tracker and want to reuse it rather than describe it again.

Sourcejetbrains.com · September 17, 2026 ↗

get_user_group_members

Lists the people in a user group or project team, a project team being a group always attached to one project.

When it helps
you need the members of a group or project team before assigning work to one of them.

Sourcejetbrains.com · September 17, 2026 ↗

search_articles

Runs a YouTrack query over the knowledge base, mixing attribute filters, keywords and free text, and returns each matching article with its title, URL, parent and the lines that matched.

When it helps
you look for every page about API authentication written in one documentation project.

Sourcejetbrains.com · September 17, 2026 ↗

search_issues

Queries issues with YouTrack's search language, combining filters, keywords and free text, and returns the basics of each match: ID, summary, project, resolution, reporter and dates.

When it helps
you want every open bug assigned to you in the mobile app project, listed in the chat.
Watch out
results are paged and stay basic; full details need a separate issue lookup.

What Claude changes (10)

10 tools

Ten tools that create, edit, tag, link, comment or log time. No source documents a confirmation per tool: the general rule below applies.

add_issue_comment

Approval: see the rule

Posts a new comment on an issue, with Markdown supported, and can limit who sees it to chosen users or groups.

What Claude asks for
no source describes a confirmation for this tool specifically; the general approval rule further down covers it.
When it helps
you want to leave a reviewer note on a ticket and keep it visible only to the feature team.

Sourcejetbrains.com · September 17, 2026 ↗

change_issue_assignee

Approval: see the rule

Sets the Assignee field of an issue to the person you name, replacing whoever held it.

What Claude asks for
nothing official sets a per-tool rule here, so the default approval behavior described below is what applies.
When it helps
an open issue has to move from one person to another on the team.

Sourcejetbrains.com · September 17, 2026 ↗

create_article

Approval: see the rule

Publishes a new article in the project you name and returns its ID and link. Visibility can be restricted to specific users or groups.

What Claude asks for
the sources stay silent on a confirmation for this action; refer to the general rule in the approvals section.
When it helps
a summary you just worked out in the conversation should become a page in the compliance knowledge base.

Sourcejetbrains.com · September 17, 2026 ↗

create_draft_issue

Approval: see the rule

Opens an issue draft in a project, visible only to you, and returns its ID and a link. The draft can then be edited with the issue update tool.

What Claude asks for
no confirmation specific to drafts is documented; Claude's default approval rule is the reference.
When it helps
you want to rough out a ticket for the marketing site before deciding whether it deserves to be filed.

Sourcejetbrains.com · September 17, 2026 ↗

create_issue

Approval: see the rule

Files a new issue in a given project and returns its ID and link, with optional restrictions on who can view it.

What Claude asks for
YouTrack documents no confirmation of its own for issue creation; the approvals section explains the default.
When it helps
you want a new issue filed with its summary, a priority and an assignee in a single request.
Watch out
some projects require fields at creation, so check the project's field schema first.

Sourcejetbrains.com · September 17, 2026 ↗

log_work

Approval: see the rule

Adds a work item, meaning time spent, to an issue: duration in minutes, optional date, work type, description and extra attributes.

What Claude asks for
no tool-level confirmation is published for time logging; read the approvals section for the rule that applies.
When it helps
you finish a refactoring session and want the time recorded on the right ticket with a short description.
Watch out
work types and attributes come from the project's settings, so they differ from one project to the next.

Sourcejetbrains.com · September 17, 2026 ↗

manage_issue_tags

Approval: see the rule

Adds a tag to an issue or removes one. With a name, the first matching tag is used; with no match, YouTrack answers with suggestions.

What Claude asks for
no source gives this tool a confirmation step of its own; the default described below applies.
When it helps
you want to flag an API ticket as urgent without opening the tracker.
Watch out
a vague tag name can attach the first close match rather than the one you meant.

Sourcejetbrains.com · September 17, 2026 ↗

update_article

Approval: see the rule

Edits an existing article: title, content or parent page, and returns its ID and link.

What Claude asks for
official texts describe no specific prompt before editing an article; the general approval rule stays the reference.
When it helps
an existing article needs the latest output of the conversation added at the end.

Sourcejetbrains.com · September 17, 2026 ↗

update_issue

Approval: see the rule

Changes an existing issue and its fields, and can also star it or add a vote. Drafts are edited the same way.

What Claude asks for
no source spells out a confirmation for updates; the approvals section gives the rule Claude follows by default.
When it helps
a ticket moves to In Progress and needs a new label in the same step.

Approvals

What Claude asks before it acts

By default, Claude stops and asks you before any action it takes on an account on your behalf. No source documents a confirmation specific to one of the ten YouTrack tools that change data, so that default covers them.

JetBrains adds its own advice: its tools create and update data as well as read it, so review each call before you confirm. On Team and Enterprise, owners decide whether members can let some actions through without being asked every time, and they can restrict a connector for the whole organization, for example keeping search and closing every write. Claude also inherits your YouTrack permissions and nothing more.

Plans

Which plans include it

Out of 819 sheets in the official directory, none shows availability per plan. That information is not published anywhere, connector by connector.

The general rule is published: remote connectors are open to all users on Claude, Cowork, Claude Desktop and mobile; desktop extensions install on Claude Desktop. On Team and Enterprise, an Owner or Primary Owner enables a connector before members can connect to it. The connector's sheet in the official directory, opened from your account, is the only place with its current state.

Limits

Where this connector stops

A connector is not an automation. Claude calls these tools while it answers you; nothing starts by itself when an issue is created, moved or closed.

Everything specific here comes from JetBrains: neither Claude's help center nor Anthropic's developer docs have a page for this connector. The directory badge is not a security audit, and Anthropic says on every sheet that it does not choose a publisher's tools nor guarantee their behavior. Only plug in what comes from a publisher you trust, here JetBrains itself.

When something looks missing, check the account's YouTrack rights and AI visibility settings before anything else.

FAQ

Claude YouTrack connector: common questions

01What can Claude do with the YouTrack connector?
It can search, read and update your YouTrack work from the conversation. Thirteen tools read: issue and article search, a full issue or article, comments, saved searches, projects, groups, members and user profiles. Ten tools change data: creating issues, drafts and articles, updating issues and articles, reassigning, tagging, linking issues, commenting and logging time. JetBrains documents all 23 by name, so nothing in the list is left unexplained, and every request uses your own YouTrack permissions.
02Can Claude create, edit or delete things in YouTrack?
Yes, it can create and edit. Ten tools change data: they file issues and drafts, update issues and articles, add comments, reassign, link issues, log time, and add or remove tags. Removing a tag is the only removal the documentation describes; no tool for deleting an issue or an article appears in the list. JetBrains reminds you that these tools modify content, and suggests reviewing each call before you confirm it.
03Does Claude ask before changing YouTrack?
By default, yes: Claude asks for confirmation before any action it takes on an account on your behalf. No source documents a confirmation specific to a YouTrack tool, so this default covers all ten tools that change data. On a Team or Enterprise workspace, owners decide whether members may let some actions through without a prompt, and they can also block writing for the whole organization while leaving search open.
04Which Claude plans include the YouTrack connector?
No official source publishes plan availability connector by connector, and none of the 819 directory sheets shows it. The general rule says remote connectors are open to all users on Claude, Cowork, Claude Desktop and mobile, and that on Team and Enterprise an Owner or Primary Owner enables each one before members can connect. The connector's directory sheet, opened from your own account, is the one place that shows its current state.
05Does Claude see every project in our YouTrack?
No. YouTrack applies the permissions of the signed-in account to every request, so Claude reaches only what that account can already open. On top of that, YouTrack can apply AI-specific visibility restrictions that hide projects and issues from AI tools, which means an item you see in the tracker may still be missing from Claude's answers. Admins on the Claude side can also restrict what the connector does, for instance keeping reading open while closing every write for the organization.
06Why does the YouTrack connector fail to sign in?
Start with the YouTrack side. JetBrains says a system administrator must enable Allow automatic OAuth client registration via CIMD before the verified connector can complete its authorization. The site must also be a YouTrack Cloud instance on version 2026.2.18687 or later, and you have to enter its original youtrack.cloud address, even when your team normally works on a custom domain. If those three points are in place, disconnect and reconnect from Claude's connector list.
07Claude or an automation tool for YouTrack?
They answer different needs. The connector fits work done in conversation: searching the backlog, reading a ticket, filing a bug, reassigning it or logging time while you talk it through. An automation tool fits what has to run without you, such as reacting every time an issue changes state, which this connector never does on its own. Pick by the task at hand rather than by ranking one above the other.
