Overview

What the AI/ML API Zapier integration does for you

The AI/ML API Zapier integration links your AI/ML API account to Zapier, the tool that chains apps together without code. It does one job: it sends text to a model of your choice and returns the model's reply, so the next step of the automation can use it.

Three results show up again and again once it runs. A draft reply: a customer message lands in your help desk, Create Chat Completion writes a first answer, and a later step files it for review. A clean summary: a long form submission goes in, three lines come out, ready for a CRM note. A label: you ask the model to sort each incoming request into a category, then route it with that word.

What Zapier does not do here matters just as much. AI/ML API exposes no trigger at all, so nothing that happens inside AI/ML API can start a Zap. There is no search either, which means a Zap cannot look up a past answer or a stored conversation. Whatever the model should take into account has to travel in the prompt and the message you map, step by step.

And since the action needs something to react to, every Zap you build here has two apps in it, at minimum. If you are still weighing the platform itself, the n8n vs Zapier comparison is a good next read.

Vocabulary

Zapier words in one minute

Seven terms come back on every line of this page. Here they are in plain words.

Zap
One automation on Zapier: a trigger from some app, then one or more actions, here at least a call to a model, on every run.
Trigger
The event that starts a Zap. AI/ML API offers none, so on this page the trigger always comes from another app you use.
Action
A step the Zap performs once started. For AI/ML API it means sending a prompt to a model and getting the reply back.
Task
What Zapier counts on your plan: each action that completes, so each model reply that comes back is one task.
Polling vs instant
Polling: Zapier checks the starting app on a timer. Instant: that app pings Zapier itself the moment something happens.
Filter
A gate between steps: the model is only called when the incoming item meets your rule, such as a text field that is filled.
Connection
The link between your AI/ML API account and Zapier, set up once, then picked again by every Zap that calls a model.
Cost

What a Zap with AI/ML API really costs

Zapier bills completed actions, not attempts and not checks.

  • Trigger0 task
  • Each successful action1 task
  • Free plan100 tasks a month, 2-step Zaps
  • Premium appNo

The trigger from your other app never costs a task, however often Zapier looks for new data. Each Create Chat Completion that goes through counts as one task; one that fails is not counted. AI/ML API is not a premium app, so it works on the free plan: 100 tasks a month, unlimited Zaps, a polling check every 15 minutes. The catch: the free plan only builds two-step Zaps. Add a filter, a search or a second action and the Zap becomes multi-step, which needs a paid plan. A few apps and actions take more than one task per run, so check yours.

Connect

Connect your AI/ML API account to Zapier

  1. 01

    Open the Apps page

In your Zapier account, go to Apps, then click + Add connection. A dialog opens with a search box. You need an existing AI/ML API account before you start.

  2. 02

    Find AI/ML API and confirm

Type AI/ML API in the search box, pick it from the results, then click Add connection. A new browser tab opens on the AI/ML API side, where you sign in to the account the Zap will use.

  3. 03

    Grant access

Allow Zapier to use the account. The connection then appears in your list, and every Zap that calls AI/ML API reuses it, so you do this step one time, not once per Zap.

First Zap

Your first Zap: summarize each new sheet row

GoalEach new sheet row whose text column is filled goes to a model, and the reply comes back into the Zap as a short summary.

  1. 01

    Pick the starting app

Create a Zap and choose the app whose event should start it. AI/ML API has no trigger, so the start always lives in another tool, here a spreadsheet.

  2. 02

    Test the trigger

Run the test. Zapier brings back the three most recent items of the connected account, so you map fields on a real row instead of a guess.

  3. 03

    Add a filter

From the plus icon, add Filter and set the field, the rule and the value. Empty rows stop here. Remember: a filter makes the Zap multi-step, so a paid plan.

  4. 04

    Add Create Chat Completion

Choose AI/ML API, then Create Chat Completion. Write the instruction prompt, select the target model, and map the row's text into the message.

  5. 05

    Test, then publish

Run the action once and read the reply that came back. If it looks right, click Publish to switch the Zap on. It reacts to new rows from that moment.

Actions

The AI/ML API action in Zapier

AI/ML API gives you 1 action. For each one: what it does for you, when to reach for it, and what to watch out for.

1

Create Chat Completion

Action

In Zapier“Creates an chat completion”

You give a model a standing instruction and a piece of text from an earlier step, and it writes back a reply your next steps can reuse: a summary, a draft, a label.

When to use it
a new ticket, form entry or note arrives and you want a first written answer without opening a chat window.
Watch out
prompt, model and message are all required, so a blank mapped field from the trigger leaves the step unable to run.
When it breaks

When an AI/ML API Zap breaks

Zapier links no help article to AI/ML API, so the known failures are the general ones.

None of them is exotic. They come from how any Zap behaves, and the action of this app runs into them like any other. When a Zap stalls, start with our Zapier troubleshooting page.

  • Old records are never processed

A Zap only reacts to what happens after you switch it on. Rows or tickets that already existed stay untouched, and sending that backlog to a model is a separate job.
  • The Zap feeds itself

If the model's reply is written back into the very sheet or tool that starts the Zap, each answer sets it off again and the task count drains fast.
  • A bulk import gets held back

When the trigger app suddenly returns a huge batch, after a migration for example, Zapier's flood protection can pause it instead of sending everything to the model.
  • The same item does not run twice

On a polling trigger Zapier keeps a record of the items it has already seen, so one sheet row does not reach AI/ML API twice and bill two tasks.

FAQ

AI/ML API Zapier integration: frequent questions

01Is the AI/ML API Zapier integration free?
Yes, on the Zapier side it works on the free plan, because AI/ML API is not a premium app. The free plan gives you 100 tasks a month and unlimited Zaps. The limit is the shape of the Zap: two steps, one trigger and one action. As soon as you add a filter, a second action or a search, it becomes a multi-step Zap and needs a paid plan. What your AI/ML API account itself charges is a separate matter that this page does not cover.
02How many Zapier tasks does an AI/ML API Zap use?
One task per successful Create Chat Completion. The trigger from the other app costs nothing, and checking for new data costs nothing either, however often Zapier looks. If the action fails, it is not counted. Add a second action after the model, for instance to save the reply, and each run now costs two tasks. A Zap with three actions eats three times what a single-action Zap does, so keep an eye on chains that grow step by step.
03Does AI/ML API work in real time with Zapier?
It depends entirely on the trigger of the other app, since AI/ML API has no trigger of its own. If that app offers an instant trigger, it tells Zapier the moment the event happens and the model is called straight away, whatever your plan. If the trigger is a polling one, Zapier checks on a timer: every 15 minutes on Free, 2 on Professional, 1 on Team and Enterprise. An instant trigger shows a lightning bolt in the editor.
04What does it take to connect AI/ML API to Zapier?
An AI/ML API account and a few clicks. From the Apps page of Zapier, add a connection, search for AI/ML API, sign in in the tab that opens and grant access. The connection is then reused by every Zap. Before testing, decide which model the step will call: the target model is a required field of the action, along with the prompt and the message. Once it exists, every new Zap that calls a model simply picks it from the list.
05Why does an AI/ML API step say a field is missing?
Because Create Chat Completion has three required fields: the instruction prompt, the target model and the message. The message is usually mapped from the trigger. If the trigger item has that field empty, the step has nothing to send and stops. The simplest fix is a filter placed before the action that lets the Zap continue only when the text is present. Keep in mind that a filter turns the Zap into a multi-step one, which needs a paid plan.
06What if the AI/ML API operation that fits the job does not exist?
Then Zapier cannot do it with this app today, since the integration offers a single action and no trigger or search. It cannot start a Zap from an event inside AI/ML API, nor look up a past reply. The way around it is to keep the logic in the other apps: let them start the Zap and store results, and use AI/ML API only for the model call. Anything beyond a model call has to be handled by those other apps.
07Zapier, Make or n8n for AI/ML API?
It depends on your criteria rather than on a ranking. On Zapier, the AI/ML API integration is one action you can set up from a free plan, in a visual editor, with billing by successful task. If you need loops over many items, branching logic or self-hosting, compare how Make and n8n handle those points for your case. Check which operations each platform exposes for this app, how each one bills, and who on your team will maintain the workflow.
