Overview

What the Canny Zapier integration actually does for a product team

Canny is where your users drop feature requests, vote and comment. Plugged into Zapier, it can start an automation the second something happens on a board, or receive posts, comments, users and status changes sent from elsewhere. You pick the event, Zapier carries the result.

A roadmap that moves on its own. Your support lead tags a post as urgent, and Tag Added to Post fires straight away. Change Post Status then pushes it to under review, with no PM clicking through the board.

Feedback that does not die in the inbox. A call transcript or a support ticket goes through Scan With Autopilot, which queues it so Canny can pull feedback out of it later. Nobody has to retype what a customer said.

Users who arrive with a name. Create or Update User finds a person in Canny or creates them, so the author of a post or comment exists before Create a Post runs.

Now the limit. Zapier offers Canny the eleven operations described below and nothing else: if the step you have in mind is not one of them, no setting will add it, and no option of the editor turns a polling trigger into an instant one or the reverse. In that case, look at the Canny Make integration before you build, or read the Make vs Zapier comparison.

Vocabulary

Zapier words you will meet on this page

Eight terms, in plain English. You will see each one again further down, without a second explanation.

Zap
The automation you build on Zapier: one trigger, then one or more actions that run each time the trigger event happens.
Trigger
The event in an app that starts the Zap. Once the Zap is on, Zapier sits and waits for it to happen.
Action
What the Zap does once it has started: the step that writes, sends or changes something for you in an app.
Task
The unit Zapier bills. One task is one action your Zap completes successfully, and your plan counts those.
Polling vs instant
A polling trigger is checked on a timer by Zapier. An instant trigger is reported by the app itself the moment the event happens.
Filter
A step that lets the Zap go on only when what arrived meets a condition you set, and stops it otherwise.
Search step
A step that looks up something already in an app, so the steps after it can use what it found.
Connection
Your Canny account linked to Zapier once, then reused by every step of every Zap that touches Canny.
Cost

What a Canny Zap costs you in tasks

Zapier bills completed actions, never the waiting. Canny is not a premium app, so it runs on the free plan (operations read on 1 October 2026, integration version CannyCLIAPI@1.27.1).

  • TriggerFree, never counted
  • Each successful action1 task
  • Free plan100 tasks a month, two-step Zaps only
  • Premium appNo, Canny works on the free plan

The trigger never costs a task, however many posts Canny reports. Each action that succeeds counts once: a Zap with three actions eats three times what a one-action Zap eats. An action that fails is not counted. The free plan gives you 100 tasks a month and unlimited Zaps, but each Zap stops at two steps, one trigger and one action. Add a filter, a search or a second action and the Zap becomes a multi-step Zap, which needs a paid plan. A few apps and actions take more than one task, so check your task count after the first runs.

Connect

Connect Canny to Zapier in three steps

  1. 01

    Open the Apps page

In your Zapier account, go to Apps and click + Add connection. Type Canny in the search box of the dialog that opens, then pick it from the list of results.

  2. 02

    Sign in to Canny

Click Add connection. A new tab opens on Canny: sign in with the account the Zaps should act as. Use one that can read and write on every board you plan to automate, not only your own posts.

  3. 03

    Grant access

Allow Zapier to use the account. From then on, every Canny step in every Zap reuses this connection, so you set it up once and pick it from the list when you build.

First Zap

Your first Zap: a tag that moves a post on the roadmap

GoalWhen your team adds a chosen tag to a post, Canny moves that post to planned and records who did it.

  1. 01

    Build: pick the trigger

Start a new Zap, choose Canny as the app and Tag Added to Post as the event. Pick your Canny connection. The editor shows a lightning bolt, since this trigger is instant.

  2. 02

    Test the trigger

Run the test. Zapier brings back the three most recent tagged posts of your account, so you map the next steps on a real post rather than on a blank example.

  3. 03

    Add the filter

Click the plus icon, add Filter and set the three boxes: the tag field, a text rule, and the tag name. A text rule on text, or the filter never passes.

  4. 04

    Add the action

Choose Change Post Status. Map the post ID from the trigger, pick planned as the status, fill the Changer ID with an admin, and decide whether voters get notified.

  5. 05

    Test, then publish

Test the action once and check the post in Canny. Then click Publish. With the filter, this is a multi-step Zap, so it needs a paid plan.

Triggers

Canny triggers: five events, all instant

5 events start a Zap when something happens in Canny, and 5 of them are instant: the app calls Zapier straight away, whatever your plan.

1

New Comment

Instant trigger

In Zapier“Triggers when a new comment is created.”

Starts your Zap each time a comment is written on a Canny post. You get the comment to pass on to another step.

How it fires
the app tells Zapier the moment it happens, so the Zap starts right away, whatever your plan
When to use it
your customer success manager wants to know when a key account replies on a request they care about.
Watch out
do not pair it with Comment on a Post on the same posts, or each new comment sets the Zap off again.
2

New Post

Instant trigger

In Zapier“Triggers when a new post is created.”

Fires as soon as a new request is posted on one of your boards. It is the entry point for anything that should happen to fresh feedback before a human reads it.

How it fires
the app tells Zapier the moment it happens, so the Zap starts right away, whatever your plan
When to use it
a product ops person routes every new idea to a triage queue the minute it arrives.
Watch out
posts that existed before you publish the Zap are not picked up, so old feedback needs a separate pass.
3

New Vote

Instant trigger

In Zapier“Triggers when a new vote is created.”

Reacts every time a user votes on a post, which is how a vote leaves the board and reaches the rest of your tools.

How it fires
the app tells Zapier the moment it happens, so the Zap starts right away, whatever your plan
When to use it
a founder wants every vote from a paying customer logged against that account.
Watch out
a popular post can produce a stream of votes, and each run that ends in an action costs a task.
4

Tag Added to Post

Instant trigger

In Zapier“Triggers when a tag is added to a post”

Goes off when someone puts a tag on a post, so a simple label becomes a workflow step.

How it fires
the app tells Zapier the moment it happens, so the Zap starts right away, whatever your plan
When to use it
your support lead tags a post as a bug and the engineering lead hears about it at once.
Watch out
it reacts to any tag, so add a filter on the tag name if only one matters, which makes the Zap multi-step.
5

Post Status Change

Instant trigger

In Zapier“Triggers when a post's status is changed.”

Fires when a post moves from one status to another, for example from planned to in progress, or from in progress to complete. This is the moment users who voted are waiting for.

How it fires
the app tells Zapier the moment it happens, so the Zap starts right away, whatever your plan
When to use it
marketing wants a heads-up each time a requested feature reaches complete, to prepare the release note.
Watch out
an action that changes the status of the same post sends the Zap round in a loop.
Actions

Canny actions: what your Zap can write

Canny gives you 5 actions. For each one: what it does for you, when to reach for it, and what to watch out for.

1

Change Post Status

Action

In Zapier“Changes a post's status.”

Moves a post to open, under review, planned, in progress, complete or closed, and records which admin made the change.

When to use it
a ticket closed in your support tool sets the matching post to complete.
Watch out
you must say whether voters get notified, so a test run on a real post may notify real users.
2

Comment on a Post

Action

In Zapier“Add an public of private comment on a Post.”

Adds a comment to an existing post, either public or marked internal so only your team sees it.

When to use it
when a post moves to planned, leave an internal note for the team with the context from the account manager.
Watch out
it needs both the post ID and an author ID, and the internal box is off unless you switch it on.
3

Create or Update User

Action

In Zapier“Finds the ID for a user. If the user does not exist, one is created, and its ID is returned. If the user does exist, they will be updated with the data supplied. https://developers.canny.io/api-reference#create_or_update_user”

Looks for a user in Canny and returns their ID, creating them if they are missing, or refreshing their details if they already exist.

When to use it
put it before Create a Post so the author ID you map always points to a real person.
Watch out
the name is required, and an existing user gets overwritten with whatever data you send.
4

Create a Post

Action

In Zapier“Creates a new post on the specified board”

Drops a new request on the board you choose, with a title and details, under a given author.

When to use it
a feature request comes in through a sales call form and should land on the public roadmap board without anyone copying it.
Watch out
author, board, title and details are all required, so the step before must provide each of them.
5

Scan With Autopilot

Action

In Zapier“Add a conversation to the autopilot processing queue. The conversation will be scanned for feedback and any extracted feedback will appear in the autopilot inbox at a later time.”

Sends a call, conversation, ticket or review to Canny Autopilot, which scans it for feedback and places what it finds in the Autopilot inbox later.

When to use it
every closed support conversation goes through Autopilot so requests buried in chats are not lost.
Watch out
results do not appear at once, and each user ID should match one email address only.
Searches

The Canny search step

1 search step looks for data that already exists in Canny, so a later step can use it.

Canny has one search. It sits at the bottom of the action event list, under the SEARCH heading, and finds a post so later steps can use it.

1

Find Post

Search

In Zapier“Finds an existing post.”

Retrieves an existing Canny post from its ID, so the next steps can read its details or act on it.

When to use it
a Zap started in another tool only carries the post ID, and you need the full post before you comment.
Watch out
it searches by post ID only, and as a search it makes the Zap multi-step, so it needs a paid plan.

The three settings every search exposes

  1. Successful if no search results are found?
Left on its default, a search that finds nothing stops the Zap there. Switch it on and the Zap carries on without a post.
  2. Create X if it doesn't exist yet?
This box turns a search into find-or-create. Find Post does not offer that option in Canny.
  3. If multiple search results are found?
Three ways out: keep the first match, which is the default, stop the Zap, or pass every match on.
When it breaks

When a Canny Zap breaks

Zapier attaches no help article to Canny, so the cases below come from how Zaps work in general and from what the Canny steps require.

Most surprises on this integration are not errors. They are Zaps doing exactly what you asked, at the wrong moment or in a loop. If a run fails and you cannot see why, the Zapier troubleshooting guide is the next stop.

  • Old posts are never picked up

A Zap only reacts to what happens after you publish it. Posts, votes and comments that were already on your boards stay where they are, and moving them is a separate job.
  • A comment Zap that feeds itself

New Comment followed by Comment on a Post on the same post writes a comment, which fires the Zap again. The task count drops fast, so point the action somewhere else.
  • A bulk import that stalls

If a migration suddenly creates a large batch of posts, Zapier's flood protection can hold the runs back instead of firing them all at once.
  • Voters notified during a test

Change Post Status asks whether voters are notified. Test it on a real post with that set to yes, and real users may hear about a status you only meant to try.

FAQ

Canny Zapier integration: frequent questions

01Is the Canny Zapier integration free?
Yes, as long as the Zap stays at two steps. Canny is not a premium app, so it works on the free plan, which gives you 100 tasks a month and unlimited Zaps. The catch is the shape of the Zap: one trigger and one action, nothing more. As soon as you add a filter, a search step or a second action, it becomes a multi-step Zap, and that needs a paid plan.
02How many tasks does a Canny Zap use?
One task per action that completes. The trigger is free, so Canny reporting a new post, vote or comment costs nothing on its own. If your Zap runs Create or Update User and then Create a Post, every successful run uses two tasks. An action that fails is not counted. Keep an eye on vote-based Zaps, since a busy board can produce a lot of runs in a short time.
03Is Canny on Zapier real time?
Yes for all five triggers. New Comment, New Post, New Vote, Tag Added to Post and Post Status Change are instant: Canny tells Zapier as soon as the event happens, and the Zap starts right away whatever your plan. The plan interval grid, 15 minutes on the free plan, does not apply to them. In the editor, an instant trigger shows a lightning bolt next to the step. Nothing to set on your side: the type is decided by the app.
04What does it take to connect Canny to Zapier?
A Canny account and a Zapier account. Use a Canny login that can read and write on every board you want to automate, not just on your own posts. Then keep a few IDs at hand: Create a Post needs an author and a board, and Change Post Status needs the ID of an admin, who is recorded as the person behind the change in the post activity. Without them, those actions cannot run.
05Why does Change Post Status notify the voters?
Because the action asks whether voters get notified, and the answer is required. If you set it to yes, every non-admin voter on that post hears about the new status, including during a test on a real post. Set it to no while you build, or test on a post that has no votes, then switch it back before you publish the Zap. It is the one setting here that reaches your users directly.
06What if the Canny action you need is not listed?
Then Zapier cannot do it with Canny directly. The visible list is five triggers, five actions and one search, read on 1 October 2026, and anything outside it is out of reach from the editor. Check first whether two listed steps chained together cover the need. If not, compare with the Make integration of Canny before building a workaround, and check the list again later, since it changes with new versions.
07Zapier, Make or n8n for Canny?
It depends on where the rest of your workflow lives and on who will maintain it. On Zapier, Canny gives you instant triggers on posts, votes, comments, tags and status, which covers most feedback routing. If the job needs an operation missing from the list above, compare what each tool exposes for Canny before choosing. Price your usage too, since Zapier bills every completed action. No single tool wins for every team.
