Overview

What the Cloudinary Zapier integration actually does

It links your Cloudinary media library to the rest of your tools without code. Something lands in Cloudinary, Zapier notices it on its next check, and another app reacts. Or the reverse: another app hands over a file, and Zapier pushes it into your Cloudinary account for you.

A shareable link for every new upload. New Uploaded Resource picks up each new image or video, and Transform Resource builds the Cloudinary link that resizes or reshapes it. Your marketing team gets a usable URL instead of a raw file.

Files from other apps, stored in one place. A form, a drive or a chat tool sends a file, and Upload Resource drops it into Cloudinary as public, private or authenticated. Nobody downloads and re-uploads anything by hand.

A usage snapshot on demand. Create Usage Report pulls storage, bandwidth and request figures from the account, so a later step can post them where your team already looks.

What Zapier does not do here: it never reports an upload the instant it happens, because both triggers are checked on a timer. It cannot search your library, rename a file or delete one either, so cleanup stays a manual job or moves to another tool. If that matters, the Cloudinary Make integration and the Cloudinary n8n integration cover the same app from a different angle.

Vocabulary

Zapier vocabulary in one minute

Seven words come back on every line of this page. Here they are, once, in ordinary English.

Zap
The automation you build on Zapier: one starting event, then one or more steps that run every time that event happens.
Trigger
The event that starts a Zap, like a new file landing in Cloudinary. Once the Zap is on, Zapier waits for it.
Action
What the Zap does after it starts: the step that uploads, builds a link or writes a report on your behalf.
Task
The unit Zapier bills. One task equals one action that finished successfully. Your plan counts those, nothing else.
Polling vs instant
Polling: Zapier asks the app for new items on a timer. Instant: the app warns Zapier itself, the moment the event occurs.
Filter
A step that lets the Zap continue only when the incoming item meets your condition, and quietly stops it otherwise.
Search step
A step that looks up something already stored in an app so later steps can reuse it. Cloudinary offers none on Zapier.
Cost

What a Cloudinary Zap really costs

Cloudinary is not one of the apps Zapier keeps for paid plans: it works on the free plan. What you pay for is tasks, not checks.

  • Free plan100 tasks a month, unlimited Zaps
  • Steps on the free plan2: one trigger, one action
  • Trigger and checks0 tasks
  • Paid plan neededNo, Cloudinary works on the free plan

The trigger itself is free, and so is every check Zapier runs to look for new uploads, however often it looks. Each action that goes through counts as one task, and an action that fails is not counted. A Zap with three actions therefore uses three tasks per run. The free plan stops at two steps, one trigger and one action. Add a filter or a second action and you are building a multi-step Zap, which needs a paid plan.

Connect

Connect Cloudinary to Zapier in 3 steps

  1. 01

    Open your connections

In Zapier, go to the Apps page of your account and click + Add connection. A connection is your Cloudinary account linked once, then reused by every step that touches Cloudinary.

  2. 02

    Pick Cloudinary

Type Cloudinary in the search box of the dialog, select it in the results, then click Add connection. A new browser tab opens on the Cloudinary side to finish the link.

  3. 03

    Sign in and allow access

Log in to Cloudinary in that tab and grant Zapier access. You need an account of your own, plus read or write rights on any media you do not own but want the Zap to handle.

First Zap

Your first Zap: tagged uploads become links

GoalEach new upload that carries a given tag gets its transformation link built automatically.

  1. 01

    Build the trigger

Create a Zap, pick Cloudinary as the starting app and New Uploaded Resource as the event. Set the resource type, and say yes to including tags.

  2. 02

    Test the trigger

Run the test. Zapier brings back the three most recent uploads of the connected account, so you map the next steps on a real file.

  3. 03

    Add the filter

Click the plus icon and add Filter. Choose the tags field, a text rule, and the tag to match. This step makes the Zap multi-step, so it needs a paid plan.

  4. 04

    Add the action

Add Transform Resource, then map the Public ID, resource type and type from the trigger. Test it once and read the link it returns.

  5. 05

    Publish

Click Publish to switch the Zap on. From that moment, only uploads made after publishing are picked up; older files stay where they are.

Triggers

Cloudinary triggers on Zapier

2 events start a Zap when something happens in Cloudinary. Zapier checks for them at the interval your plan allows.

1

New Uploaded Resource

Polling trigger

In Zapier“Triggers when a new resource is uploaded.”

Every fresh image, video or other file in your account starts the Zap, with its details ready for the next step. You can choose to bring along its tags, its context pairs and its moderation status.

How it fires
Zapier goes and looks at regular intervals, and how often depends on your plan: every 15 minutes on the free one.
When to use it
you want every upload, whatever its label, to land in a sheet, a channel or a review queue.
Watch out
audio files such as MP3 sit under the video resource type, so pick video if your podcast uploads never show up.
2

New Tagged Resource

Polling trigger

In Zapier“Triggers when a new resource is uploaded and is tagged with a given tag.”

Narrower than the previous one: the Zap only starts for uploads that carry the exact tag you type in. Untagged files and files with another label are simply ignored.

How it fires
Zapier goes and looks at regular intervals, and how often depends on your plan: every 15 minutes on the free one.
When to use it
your team tags media as approved, and only approved visuals should travel to the website or the newsletter tool.
Watch out
the tag and the resource type are both required, so a Zap set to images will never see a tagged video.
Actions

Cloudinary actions on Zapier

Cloudinary gives you 4 actions. For each one: what it does for you, when to reach for it, and what to watch out for.

1

Transform Resource

Action

In Zapier“Creates a Cloudinary URL that can be used to transform, manipulate, and share the resource.”

Builds a Cloudinary link for a file you already store, ready to transform, resize or share in another app.

When to use it
a product photo needs a lightweight version for an email or a catalog page.
Watch out
the Public ID must include the folder path, not just the bare file name.
2

Upload Resource

Action

In Zapier“Uploads a new resource to your Cloudinary account.”

Sends a file or a file URL coming from another app into your Cloudinary account, in one step.

When to use it
attachments from a form or a support ticket should end up in your media library instead of an inbox.
Watch out
by default the file is public; switch the type to private or authenticated for anything sensitive.
3

Upload Resource (Advanced)

Action

In Zapier“Uploads a new resource to your Cloudinary account. This advanced action includes additional upload parameters.”

Same upload, with extra options: refresh cached copies of an older version, return image metadata, detect faces, extract dominant colors or compute a similarity fingerprint.

When to use it
you replace a visual under the same name and need the old cached copies refreshed.
Watch out
the face, color and fingerprint options only apply to images.
4

Create Usage Report

Action

In Zapier“Creates a report on the status of your Cloudinary account usage details, including storage, bandwidth, requests, number of resources, and add-on usage.”

Produces a snapshot of how much of your Cloudinary account you are using: storage, bandwidth, requests, number of files and add-ons.

When to use it
finance or ops wants the figures dropped in a spreadsheet without logging in to Cloudinary.
Watch out
a Zap needs a trigger, so this report runs after another app starts it.
When it breaks

When a Cloudinary Zap breaks

Zapier attaches no help article to Cloudinary, so the traps below come from how Zapier itself behaves and from the app's own fields.

These four cases rarely look like an error: the Zap simply stays quiet, or runs far too often. If one of yours misbehaves, the Zapier troubleshooting guide walks through the checks in order.

  • Older uploads are never picked up

A Zap only reacts to what happens after you publish it. Files already in the library stay untouched; moving that backlog is a separate job.
  • Upload Resource feeds its own trigger

Uploading into the same account that New Uploaded Resource watches restarts the Zap on every file it adds, and the task count drains fast.
  • A bulk import gets held back

After a mass upload or a migration, the trigger suddenly returns a huge batch. Zapier's flood protection can hold it back.
  • Audio files never appear

Cloudinary files audio, MP3 included, under the video resource type. A trigger or an upload set to image misses them.

FAQ

Cloudinary Zapier integration: FAQ

01Is the Cloudinary Zapier integration free?
Yes, on the free plan. Cloudinary is not one of the apps Zapier reserves for paying accounts, so you can connect it without upgrading. The free plan gives you 100 tasks a month and unlimited Zaps, checked every 15 minutes. The real limit is the shape of the Zap: one trigger and one action, nothing more. As soon as you add a filter, a second action or any extra step, Zapier treats it as a multi-step Zap and asks for a paid plan. Plan the first version of your automation around a single action and it stays free.
02How many tasks does a Cloudinary Zap use?
One per action that succeeds, and nothing else. Checking Cloudinary for new uploads costs zero, however often Zapier looks, and the trigger itself never counts. If your Zap builds a transformation link and then posts it somewhere, that is two tasks for each new file. An action that fails is not billed. So the honest way to size your plan is simple: count the uploads you expect in a month, multiply by the number of actions in the Zap, and compare with your task allowance.
03Does the Cloudinary trigger work in real time?
No. Both Cloudinary triggers work by polling: Zapier goes to check for new uploads at a regular interval, and that interval depends on your plan. On the free plan the check happens every 15 minutes. On Professional it drops to every 2 minutes, and on Team or Enterprise to every minute. Paid plans can also run a check by hand from the editor. Zapier remembers what it already saw, so the same file does not start the Zap twice.
04What do you need to connect a Cloudinary account?
A Cloudinary account of your own, and read or write rights on any media you want the Zap to touch but do not own. The connection itself takes three moves: open the Apps page in Zapier and click + Add connection, search for Cloudinary and confirm, then sign in to Cloudinary in the new tab and allow access. The same connection is then reused by every Cloudinary step in every Zap, so you only do this once per account.
05Why does an MP3 upload never start the Zap?
Because Cloudinary does not treat audio as its own category. MP3 and other audio files are stored under the video resource type. If New Uploaded Resource or New Tagged Resource is set to image, those files are invisible to it. Switch the resource type to video in the trigger, or create a second Zap dedicated to audio. The same rule applies on the upload side: Upload Resource needs the video type, or auto, to store an audio file correctly.
06What if the Cloudinary operation you need is missing?
Then Zapier is probably not the right tool for that part. On Zapier, Cloudinary exposes 2 triggers and 4 actions: no search, no rename, no delete. Check first whether Upload Resource (Advanced) covers the option you want, since it carries the extra parameters. If not, look at the same app on Make or n8n, each covered on its own Cloudinary page. Keeping a manual step for cleanup is also a fair choice when the volume stays low.
07Zapier, Make or n8n for Cloudinary?
It depends on three criteria rather than on a winner. First, the operations: Zapier covers uploads, transformation links and usage reports, so check that your scenario fits inside that list. Second, the billing model: on Zapier you pay per successful action, so the bill grows with every step and every new file. Third, the shape of the workflow: anything beyond one trigger and one action needs a paid Zapier plan. Compare those three points with what Make and n8n offer for the same app before committing.
