Overview

What the Lantern Zapier integration actually does

Lantern builds product discovery quizzes: the shopper answers a few questions and gets matched products. The integration sends each finished quiz into a Zap (an automation on Zapier: one event that starts it, then one or more steps that follow), so the result does not stay locked inside Lantern.

Three results come out of that single event. First, a list that grows with every quiz: Quiz Completion hands the shopper's email to your newsletter tool, tagged by what they answered. Second, a sales follow-up with context: the same event creates a lead in your CRM, so whoever calls knows which products the quiz suggested. Third, a live feed for the team: each completion posts to a chat channel or adds a row to a sheet, which is enough to see which quiz works.

What Zapier does not do here is just as clear. There are no actions and no searches on Lantern: a Zap cannot create a quiz, change one, or look up past answers. Lantern is only ever the starting point, the trigger at the head of the Zap, never a step further down. And a shopper who stops halfway does not count, only a completed quiz with its recommendations does. If you want to weigh this against other platforms, start with Make vs Zapier. One quiz, many destinations.

Vocabulary

Zapier vocabulary in one minute

Seven words come back on every screen of the editor. Here they are in plain English, once.

Trigger
The event in an app that starts the Zap. Once the Zap is switched on, Zapier waits for it; for Lantern, a completed quiz.
Action
What the Zap does after it starts: the step that writes, sends or updates something in another app on your behalf.
Task
The unit Zapier bills. One task is one action your Zap completes successfully, and your plan counts those.
Instant trigger
A trigger the app reports itself: it calls Zapier the moment the event happens, so nothing waits for a scheduled check.
Polling trigger
The other kind: Zapier checks the app on a timer and keeps what is new. Lantern's only trigger is not one of these.
Filter
A step that lets the Zap go on only when the incoming data meets your condition, and stops it quietly otherwise.
Multi-step Zap
Any Zap beyond one trigger and one action. A second action or a filter makes one, and it then needs a paid plan.
Cost

What a Lantern Zap really costs

Zapier bills the actions it completes, never the event that starts the Zap. With Lantern, that works in your favor.

  • Free plan100 tasks a month
  • Free plan Zap size1 trigger + 1 action
  • Premium appNo
  • Instant triggers1 of 1

Quiz Completion costs nothing: a trigger never uses a task. Each action that follows and succeeds counts once, so a Zap that sends a quiz result to two apps uses two tasks per shopper. A failed action is not counted. Lantern is not a premium app and runs on the free plan: 100 tasks a month, unlimited Zaps, each one limited to two steps, a trigger and one action. Because the trigger is instant, the interval grid below does not slow it down on any plan.

Connect

Connect Lantern to Zapier in three steps

  1. 01

    Open your apps page

In Zapier, open Apps and click + Add connection. You need a Lantern account with access to the quiz you plan to watch, since the trigger asks for that quiz by its ID.

  2. 02

    Pick Lantern

Search for Lantern in the dialog, select it, then click Add connection. A new browser tab opens on the Lantern side; keep it open until you are done.

  3. 03

    Sign in and allow access

Log in to Lantern in that tab and give Zapier access to the account. The connection is saved once, then every Zap that starts from a Lantern quiz reuses it.

First Zap

Your first Zap: turn quiz takers into subscribers

GoalEach time a shopper completes a Lantern quiz with an email, add them to your newsletter list with their answers.

  1. 01

    Pick the trigger

Create a Zap, choose Lantern as the app that starts it and Quiz Completion as the event, then select your Lantern connection.

  2. 02

    Set the quiz

Paste the Quiz ID copied from Lantern, and choose whether the Zap should run only when the shopper left an email address.

  3. 03

    Test the trigger

Run the test. Zapier brings back the three most recent completions of that quiz, so take a real one to map your fields. Prefer one with an email.

  4. 04

    Add and test the action

Add the newsletter step, map the email and the quiz answers into it, then run it once and check the contact really appeared in your list.

  5. 05

    Publish

Click Publish to switch the Zap on. Every quiz finished from now on reaches your list straight away, whatever your plan.

Triggers

Lantern triggers

1 event starts a Zap when something happens in Lantern, and one of them is instant: the app calls Zapier straight away, whatever your plan.

1

Quiz Completion

Instant trigger

In Zapier“Triggers when a customer successfully completes a quiz and sees their product recommendations.”

Starts the Zap when a shopper reaches the end of a Lantern quiz and sees the products picked for them. You choose which quiz to watch by its ID, and whether a completion without an email address still counts.

How it fires
the app tells Zapier the moment it happens, so the Zap starts right away, whatever your plan
When to use it
sending the shopper a follow-up based on their answers while the quiz is still fresh, or alerting sales about a high-intent visitor.
Watch out
if you let completions without email through, every step after it must cope with an empty address, or it will fail.
When it breaks

When a Lantern Zap breaks

Zapier lists no help article and no rate limit specific to Lantern. What goes wrong comes from the trigger settings and from general Zapier behavior.

Four situations explain most surprises. Go through them before suspecting the connection, and if a Zap still misbehaves, move on to Zapier troubleshooting.

  • Nothing arrives at all

The Quiz ID in the trigger does not match the quiz shoppers actually take. Copy it again from the More Integrations tab of that quiz in Lantern.
  • Some shoppers are missing

The trigger is set to run only when an email address was given. Shoppers who skip the email field finish the quiz but never reach the Zap.
  • Older quiz results never come

A Zap only reacts to what happens after you switch it on. Completions from before stay in Lantern, and moving them is a separate job.
  • A traffic spike stalls the Zap

If a campaign sends a huge batch of completions at once, Zapier's flood protection can hold them back instead of running them all.

FAQ

Lantern Zapier integration: frequent questions

01Is the Lantern Zapier integration free?
Yes. Lantern is not a premium app, so it works on the free plan: 100 tasks a month and as many Zaps as you want. The catch nobody announces is that a free Zap is two steps, one trigger and one action. Adding a filter, for example to keep only quizzes with an email, makes it a multi-step Zap that needs a paid plan. Sending each quiz result to one single tool stays free.
02How many tasks does a Lantern Zap use?
One task per action that succeeds, and nothing for the quiz itself. Quiz Completion is a trigger, and triggers never cost a task. A Zap that sends each result to one app uses one task per completed quiz, so a hundred completions in a month use the whole free allowance. Send each result to two apps and the same traffic uses twice as much. Failed actions are not counted. Plan the volume before a big campaign.
03Does Lantern trigger Zaps in real time?
Yes. Quiz Completion is an instant trigger: Lantern itself tells Zapier the moment a shopper finishes, and the Zap starts at once. The interval grid of the plans, 15 minutes on Free, 2 on Professional, 1 on Team and Enterprise, does not apply to it. This is the main advantage of this app on a free plan, because a follow-up can go out right after the shopper finishes. No setting is needed to get that speed.
04What does it take to connect Lantern to Zapier?
A Lantern account, a Zapier account and the Quiz ID of the quiz to watch. The connection is made once from the Apps page of Zapier, by signing in to Lantern in a new tab. The Quiz ID is then set inside the trigger: you find it in Lantern by editing the quiz and opening the More Integrations tab. Without it, the trigger has no quiz to listen to. Testing the trigger then brings back the three most recent completions.
05Why do some Lantern quiz results never reach the Zap?
Usually because of the email setting. The trigger asks whether it should run only when the shopper left an email address. If you answered yes, every shopper who skipped that field finishes the quiz normally but never starts the Zap. That is often what you want for a newsletter, less so for counting quiz traffic. Change the setting, then make sure the following steps accept an empty email. Test both cases before you publish the Zap.
06What if the Lantern operation you need is not on Zapier?
Then the Zapier app cannot do it today. The integration exposes a single operation, the Quiz Completion trigger, with no action and no search. A Zap can react to a finished quiz, but it cannot create or edit a quiz, nor fetch older results. For anything beyond that, the options are working inside Lantern itself or asking the vendor to extend its Zapier app with new operations. Check the operation list before you plan a project around it.
07Zapier, Make or n8n for Lantern?
It depends on your criteria, there is no single winner. Zapier is quick to set up for a team that has never automated, the trigger is instant, and it works on the free plan. Its limits here are the two step free Zap and the single operation on offer. If you plan heavy volume, need complex branching after each quiz, or want to host the automation yourself, compare the platforms on those points first.
