What the Mastodon / Fediverse by Unshape Zapier integration does
Mastodon / Fediverse by Unshape is a connector, published by Unshape, that lets Zapier post to Mastodon for you. It does one thing: Create Post, which publishes a new post with the text and visibility you set. It never starts a Zap on its own, so every Zap that uses it begins in another app.
Three results this single action covers well. A posting queue in a spreadsheet: you write posts in rows, and each new row goes out as a post with Create Post. An automatic share of your own content: a new article on your blog or a new video triggers a post that carries the link. A quieter channel: the same action with Visibility set to private, for posts you do not want public; check at the test how a private post shows up.
What Zapier does not do with this app matters too. There is no trigger: a Zap cannot react to a mention, a new follower or a reply on Mastodon through this connector. There is no search either, so it cannot look up an earlier post, and no action to edit or delete one. It writes, once per run, and that is all.
Since the trigger lives in another app, how fast a post goes out depends on that trigger, not on Unshape. If you are still deciding whether Zapier is the right tool for this, open our n8n vs Zapier comparison.
Zapier words, one line each
Eight terms you will need below.
- Zap
- The automation you build on Zapier: one trigger, then one or more actions that run every time the trigger event happens.
- Trigger
- The event in an app that starts the Zap. This connector has none, so the trigger always comes from another app.
- Action
- What the Zap does once started: the step that writes, sends or moves something. Create Post is this connector's only action.
- Task
- The unit Zapier bills: one action the Zap completes successfully. One published post is one task.
- Polling trigger
- A trigger Zapier checks on a timer, asking the app for new items at a fixed interval that depends on your plan.
- Instant trigger
- A trigger the app reports itself, calling Zapier the moment the event happens, so nothing waits for a check.
- Filter
- A step that lets the Zap carry on only when what arrived meets your condition, and stops it otherwise.
- Multi-step Zap
- Any Zap beyond one trigger and one action. A filter or a second action makes it one, and it then needs a paid plan.
What each post costs
Mastodon / Fediverse by Unshape is not a premium app, so it works on the free plan. Each post that Create Post publishes successfully counts as one task; a post that fails is not counted, and the trigger in the other app never costs anything.
- Free plan100 tasks a month, unlimited Zaps, two steps each
- Premium appNo
- One postOne task, when it succeeds
- Operations1 action, no trigger, no search
On the free plan you get 100 tasks a month, so up to 100 posts, in Zaps of two steps. Add a filter to skip some rows, or a second action, and the Zap becomes multi-step, which needs a paid plan, even for a single extra step. The interval grid below applies only if the trigger you pick in the other app is a polling one: it sets how long a new item can wait before Zapier sees it. A few apps and actions take more than one task.
Connect Mastodon / Fediverse by Unshape
- 01
Open Apps in Zapier
On the Apps page of your Zapier account, click + Add connection. You need an account on this app, and write access to the Mastodon account you want to post to if it is not yours.
- 02
Pick the connector
Search for Mastodon / Fediverse by Unshape in the dialog, select it, then click Add connection. A new tab opens on the app's side so you can finish the link.
- 03
Sign in and allow access
Log in to the app in that tab and let Zapier act on the account. The connection is stored once and offered again in every Zap that ends with Create Post.
Your first Zap: a spreadsheet that posts to Mastodon
GoalEach time a new row appears in your spreadsheet, keep only the rows that meet one condition, then publish the row's text as a Mastodon post.
- 01
Pick the trigger
Create a Zap and choose your spreadsheet app with its new-row event. Whether that trigger is instant or polled is decided by that app; the editor shows a lightning bolt on instant ones.
- 02
Test the trigger
Run the test. Zapier brings back the three most recent rows from the connected sheet, so you build the post from real text. Check at the test which columns come through.
- 03
Add a filter
From the plus icon, add a Filter and set the field, the rule and the value, for example a column you use to mark rows ready. The filter makes the Zap multi-step, so it needs a paid plan.
- 04
Set up Create Post
Add the action, choose Mastodon / Fediverse by Unshape and Create Post. Map the row's text into Post Content, then pick public or private in Visibility. Both fields are required.
- 05
Test and publish
Test the action and read what came back, ideally with text you would be happy to see online. Then click Publish. Every post that goes through costs one task.
The Mastodon / Fediverse by Unshape action
Mastodon / Fediverse by Unshape gives you 1 action. For each one: what it does for you, when to reach for it, and what to watch out for.
Operations index
Create Post
ActionIn Zapier“Create a new post in Mastodon.”
Publishes a new post on Mastodon, with the text and the visibility you mapped from earlier steps. Links and hashtags can go straight into the text.
When it breaks
Zapier links no help article and no documented limit to this connector. The problems come from how Zapier works.
Four cases to know with an app that only writes. When a post fails without an obvious cause, our Zapier troubleshooting page is the place to start.
Old content is not posted
A Zap only reacts to what happens after it is switched on. Rows or articles that existed before will not be posted; that backlog is a separate job.A bulk import floods the queue
If the other app's trigger suddenly returns a huge batch, after a bulk import or a migration, Zapier's flood protection can hold those runs back.A Zap that posts in a loop
As a general precaution: a Zap that writes into the very place its own trigger watches can set itself off again and again, and burn tasks fast. The filter needs a paid plan
A filter turns the Zap into a multi-step Zap. The free plan allows one trigger and one action only, so a filtered posting Zap needs a paid plan.
