Mattermost Zapier integrationAutomate Mattermost with Zapier.
The Mattermost Zapier integration does one thing: it posts messages. Zapier lists 0 triggers, 1 action and 0 searches for Mattermost, so another app always starts the Zap and Mattermost is where the news lands, in the channel of your choice.

What the Mattermost Zapier integration is for
Zapier is a service that links apps without code. With Mattermost, it plays one role: when something happens in another tool, it writes a message in a Mattermost channel for your team. Mattermost never starts anything on its own, because Zapier exposes no event coming out of it.
Three outcomes you can build with that single action. A support alert: a new ticket in your helpdesk becomes a message in the support channel, so nobody refreshes a queue all day. A sales heads-up: a deal marked as won in your CRM lands in the sales channel, with the client name and the amount pulled from the CRM step. A release note: an item moved to done in your project tool posts a short line in the product channel. All three run on Post Message.
What Zapier does not do for Mattermost matters just as much. It does not read messages, so a new post cannot start a Zap. It does not create channels or teams, and it cannot reach direct messages: only channels of a team you belong to. It does not search, edit or delete. If you need any of that, the Zapier editor offers nothing for it today.
If you compare platforms, the same app has its pages on the other side: the Mattermost n8n integration and the Mattermost Make integration. Line them up against the one action Zapier gives you before you pick.
Zapier words in one minute
Seven words come back on this page. Here they are in plain English, once.
- Zap
- The automation you build on Zapier: one trigger, then one or more actions that run each time the trigger event happens.
- Trigger
- The event in an app that starts the Zap. Once the Zap is on, Zapier waits for it. Mattermost has none, so another app provides it.
- Action
- What the Zap does once it has started: the step that writes or sends something for you. Here, posting a message in a channel.
- Task
- The unit Zapier bills: one action that your Zap completes successfully. The number on your plan is a count of those.
- Polling vs instant
- A polling trigger is checked by Zapier on a timer. An instant trigger is reported by the app itself the moment the event happens.
- Filter
- A step that lets the Zap continue only when what arrived meets your condition, and stops it quietly otherwise.
- Connection
- Your Mattermost account linked to Zapier once, then reused by every step that posts to Mattermost.
What a Mattermost Zap really costs
Mattermost is not a premium app, so it works on the free plan. The bill is counted in tasks, and only the posting step counts.
- Free plan100 tasks per month
- Free plan limit2 steps per Zap
- Premium appNo
- One posted message1 task
The trigger never costs a task, and Zapier checking another app for new items costs nothing either. Each message that gets posted is one task. A post that fails is not counted. The free plan gives 100 tasks a month and builds two-step Zaps only: one trigger, one action. Add a filter, so that only urgent tickets reach the channel, and the Zap becomes a multi-step Zap that needs a paid plan. Same thing if you post to a second channel.
Connect Mattermost to Zapier in 3 steps
- 01
Open the Apps page
In your Zapier account, go to Apps and click + Add connection. A dialog opens with a search box. Type Mattermost and pick it from the list that appears below the box.
- 02
Sign in to Mattermost
Click Add connection. A new tab opens on Mattermost. Sign in with the account that belongs to the team you want to post into, since Zapier will only see what that account sees.
- 03
Grant access
Approve the access Zapier asks for. The connection then shows up in your Apps list, and every Mattermost step of every Zap can reuse it without asking again.
Your first Mattermost Zap: urgent tickets in the support channel
GoalPost every urgent helpdesk ticket in the support channel of your Mattermost team.
- 01
Pick the trigger
Create a Zap, choose your helpdesk as the app that starts it, and its new ticket event. Test it: Zapier brings back the three most recent tickets so you map fields on a real one.
- 02
Add the filter
Click the plus icon, choose Filter, then set the field (priority), a text rule and the value (urgent). This step turns the Zap into a multi-step one.
- 03
Add Post Message
Add Mattermost as the action app and pick
Post Message. Choose the team, then the channel, from the dropdowns your connection fills. - 04
Write the message
In Message Text, mix fixed words with fields from the ticket: subject, requester, link. Markdown works here, so a bold subject line reads well in the channel.
- 05
Test, then publish
Run the action test once and check the post in Mattermost. If it looks right, click Publish. The Zap only reacts to tickets created after that moment.
The Mattermost action on Zapier
Mattermost gives you 1 action. For each one: what it does for you, when to reach for it, and what to watch out for.
Post Message
ActionIn Zapier“Post a new message to a channel.”
Writes a new message in a channel of one of your teams, with text you compose from fixed words and data from earlier steps. Markdown formatting is kept.
When a Mattermost Zap breaks
Zapier attaches no help article to Mattermost and lists no rate limit for it. What breaks comes from the action's own fields and from rules that apply to every Zap.
Most failures show up on the first test or on the first busy day. Here are the cases worth knowing before you publish.
No direct messages
The Channel field does not list direct message channels. A Zap meant to ping one person needs a shared channel or another tool.Empty team or channel list
The dropdowns only show what the connected account can reach. Join the team and channel with that account first, then pick them again in the step.Nothing from before the Zap
A Zap only reacts to events after it is switched on. Tickets or deals that existed before are never posted, and moving them is a separate job.Sudden flood held back
If the app that starts the Zap returns a huge batch after a bulk import, Zapier's flood protection can hold it back instead of posting everything.
