Overview

What the Memberful Zapier integration actually does

Memberful lets you sell memberships to your audience. On Zapier, it is a pure source: 14 events about members, orders and subscriptions, each able to start a Zap that writes into another tool. Nothing comes back in, since there is no action and no search for Memberful.

Refunds that reach your books. Order Refunded fires when money goes back to a member. Send it to your accounting tool, and the figures match without a second person checking.

Access that ends when the subscription does. Subscription Deactivated covers suspended, expired and inactive subscriptions. Pair it with your community tool and former members stop seeing what they no longer pay for.

Invoices with the right tax ID. Tax ID Updated fires when a member adds, changes or removes it. Your invoicing tool gets the change before the next invoice goes out, so nobody has to ask the member twice.

What Zapier does not do here: it cannot create a member, change a subscription or issue a refund in Memberful, since the app has no action. Order Purchased skips renewal orders. And no Zap picks up members who joined before it was switched on.

Vocabulary

Zapier words, in plain English

Seven terms come back across this page. Here they are once, then used without reminders.

Zap
The automation you build: one trigger, then one or more actions that run each time that trigger's event happens.
Trigger
The event in an app that starts the Zap. Once the Zap is on, Zapier waits for that event to happen.
Action
What the Zap does after it starts: the step that writes, sends or updates something for you in another app.
Task
The unit Zapier bills. One task is one action your Zap finished successfully, and your plan counts those.
Polling vs instant
A polling trigger is checked by Zapier on a timer. An instant trigger is reported by the app itself, so nothing waits.
Filter
A step that lets the Zap continue only when what arrived meets your condition, and stops it otherwise.
Connection
Your Memberful account linked to Zapier once, then reused by every Zap that starts from Memberful.
Cost

What it really costs

Memberful is not reserved for paid plans: it works on the free plan.

  • Free plan100 tasks a month, unlimited two-step Zaps
  • Paid plans onlyFilters, second actions
  • This appAvailable on the free plan

The trigger never costs a task, and waiting for Memberful events costs nothing either. Each action that succeeds in your other tools counts once, so a three-action Zap uses three times what a one-action Zap does, and a failed action is not counted. The free plan gives 100 tasks a month and unlimited Zaps, each capped at two steps. A second action or a filter makes it a multi-step Zap, which needs a paid plan.

The grid below is how often Zapier checks a polling trigger on each plan. All 14 Memberful triggers are instant, so it does not apply to them.

Connect

Connect your Memberful account

  1. 01

    Open your connections

In Zapier, go to the Apps page of your account and click + Add connection. You need an account on Memberful, plus read or write access on anything you do not own yourself and want the Zap to touch.

  2. 02

    Pick Memberful

Type Memberful in the search box of the dialog, select it, then click Add connection. A new tab opens on the Memberful sign-in page, separate from your Zapier window.

  3. 03

    Sign in and allow access

Log in to Memberful in that tab and grant Zapier access to the account. From then on, every Zap that starts from Memberful can reuse that same connection.

First Zap

Your first Zap: remove lapsed members from your community

GoalWhen a Memberful subscription goes inactive, the member is removed from your community tool, but only when it passes your filter.

  1. 01

    Create the Zap

Start a new Zap and choose Memberful as the app that starts it. Select the connection you created earlier when Zapier asks which account to use.

  2. 02

    Set the trigger

Pick Subscription Deactivated. Test it: Zapier brings back the three most recent items of the account, so you map on a real deactivation rather than a guess.

  3. 03

    Add the filter

Click the plus icon, choose Filter and fill the three boxes: the field to look at, the rule, the value. A text rule only works on text, so pick the type that matches.

  4. 04

    Add the action

Add your community tool as the next step and map the member's email from the trigger. Which details arrive is visible in the test result, so check them there.

  5. 05

    Test, then publish

Run each step once and read what came back. Then click Publish. With the filter, this is a multi-step Zap, so it needs a paid plan.

Triggers

Memberful triggers: 14 events, all instant

14 events start a Zap when something happens in Memberful, and 14 of them are instant: the app calls Zapier straight away, whatever your plan.

1

Custom Fields Updated

Instant trigger

In Zapier“Triggers when a member updates their custom fields.”

A member changed the answers in their custom fields, the extra profile questions you set up in Memberful. The Zap starts on that edit, made by the member themselves.

How it fires
the app tells Zapier the moment it happens, so the Zap starts right away, whatever your plan.
When to use it
keep the matching fields of your CRM or spreadsheet in step, so a preference a member changes is not lost on the other side.
Watch out
other profile edits, like a name or an email, come through Member Updated instead; check at the test which one carries what you need.
2

Member Deleted

Instant trigger

In Zapier“Triggers when a member is deleted.”

A member account was deleted in Memberful. This is the end of the line for that person's record, not a pause or a lapsed subscription.

How it fires
the app tells Zapier the moment it happens, so the Zap starts right away, whatever your plan.
When to use it
clean the same person out of your email tool and your spreadsheet, so a deleted member does not keep receiving messages.
Watch out
a lapsed or cancelled subscription is a different event, covered by Subscription Deactivated or Subscription Deleted.
3

New Member

Instant trigger

In Zapier“Triggers when a new member account is created.”

A new member account was created in Memberful. It fires on the account itself, whether or not the person has bought anything yet.

How it fires
the app tells Zapier the moment it happens, so the Zap starts right away, whatever your plan.
When to use it
add every new account to your email tool with a welcome tag, or post a hello in your team's chat.
Watch out
to react only to paying members, Order Purchased or Subscription Created are closer to what you want.
4

Member Updated

Instant trigger

In Zapier“Triggers when a member's profile information is updated.”

A member's profile information changed in Memberful. It covers profile edits, not changes to what the member pays for.

How it fires
the app tells Zapier the moment it happens, so the Zap starts right away, whatever your plan.
When to use it
update the contact record in your CRM or email tool when a member changes their details.
Watch out
subscription changes have their own trigger, Subscription Updated, and custom fields have Custom Fields Updated.
5

Order Purchased

Instant trigger

In Zapier“Triggers when a member completes an order or when staff manually adds a new order. Not sent for subscription renewal orders.”

A member completed an order, or someone on your team added an order by hand. Both cases start the Zap. Renewal orders of a subscription do not.

How it fires
the app tells Zapier the moment it happens, so the Zap starts right away, whatever your plan.
When to use it
log each sale as a row in your spreadsheet, or send the order to your accounting tool.
Watch out
renewal orders are left out; renewals have their own trigger, Subscription Renewed, so check at the test what each one carries before mixing them in one sheet.
6

Order Refunded

Instant trigger

In Zapier“Triggers when an order is refunded.”

An order was refunded in Memberful. The Zap gets the refund, which lets the rest of your tools catch up with the money that went back.

How it fires
the app tells Zapier the moment it happens, so the Zap starts right away, whatever your plan.
When to use it
update your accounting tool, or remove the buyer from a list meant for paying customers.
Watch out
a refund does not undo what earlier Zaps did on the purchase, so plan that clean-up as part of this Zap.
7

Subscription Activated

Instant trigger

In Zapier“Triggers when a member's suspended order is marked completed and the subscription becomes active again.”

A member's suspended order was marked completed, and the subscription is active again. It is the recovery event after a suspension.

How it fires
the app tells Zapier the moment it happens, so the Zap starts right away, whatever your plan.
When to use it
restore access in the other tools you removed the member from, so they get back what they pay for.
Watch out
it is not the same as Subscription Reactivated, which covers a member renewing an inactive subscription themselves.
8

Subscription Created

Instant trigger

In Zapier“Triggers when a member's subscription is created.”

Brand-new subscription: a member just started one. It marks the start of recurring revenue for that person in Memberful.

How it fires
the app tells Zapier the moment it happens, so the Zap starts right away, whatever your plan.
When to use it
start a subscriber-only onboarding sequence, different from what one-time buyers receive.
Watch out
later renewals of the same subscription come through Subscription Renewed, not through this trigger.
9

Subscription Deactivated

Instant trigger

In Zapier“Triggers when a member's subscription is suspended, expires, or becomes inactive.”

Suspended, expired or simply inactive: one of these just happened to a member's subscription. Three different stories end in the same signal: the member no longer has an active subscription.

How it fires
the app tells Zapier the moment it happens, so the Zap starts right away, whatever your plan.
When to use it
remove the member from a private community or a subscriber list kept in another tool.
Watch out
to tell the three causes apart, check at the test what the trigger carries before filtering on it.
10

Subscription Deleted

Instant trigger

In Zapier“Triggers when a member's subscription is deleted.”

Gone for good: a subscription was deleted from Memberful entirely, which is a stronger move than a subscription going inactive. The record itself disappears.

How it fires
the app tells Zapier the moment it happens, so the Zap starts right away, whatever your plan.
When to use it
remove the subscription from the records you keep elsewhere, like a revenue spreadsheet.
Watch out
a subscription that simply expires comes through Subscription Deactivated instead.
11

Subscription Reactivated

Instant trigger

In Zapier“Triggers when a member renews an inactive subscription and it becomes active again.”

A member renewed a subscription that had gone inactive, and it is active again. The member chose to come back.

How it fires
the app tells Zapier the moment it happens, so the Zap starts right away, whatever your plan.
When to use it
send a welcome-back message and restore what was taken away when the subscription lapsed.
Watch out
a suspended order marked completed is a different case, handled by Subscription Activated.
12

Subscription Renewed

Instant trigger

In Zapier“Triggers when a member's subscription is renewed.”

Renewal day for one of your members: their subscription renewed. Each renewal is its own event, which makes this the trigger for recurring revenue.

How it fires
the app tells Zapier the moment it happens, so the Zap starts right away, whatever your plan.
When to use it
add a row per renewal to your revenue spreadsheet, or thank long-standing members.
Watch out
each renewal is one run, and every action you add costs one task per renewal.
13

Subscription Updated

Instant trigger

In Zapier“Triggers when a member's subscription is updated.”

Something changed in a subscription. It is the broad trigger for subscription edits, beside the more specific ones for creation, renewal and deactivation.

How it fires
the app tells Zapier the moment it happens, so the Zap starts right away, whatever your plan.
When to use it
keep a subscription log in a spreadsheet, or alert your team when a member changes plan.
Watch out
check at the test what kind of changes reach it, since the source does not list them.
14

Tax ID Updated

Instant trigger

In Zapier“Triggers when a member adds, changes or removes their tax ID.”

A member added, changed or removed their tax ID. Small event, but it matters for anyone who invoices businesses.

How it fires
the app tells Zapier the moment it happens, so the Zap starts right away, whatever your plan.
When to use it
update the customer record in your invoicing or accounting tool so the next invoice carries the right tax ID.
Watch out
a removal counts too, so check at the test how an empty tax ID arrives before mapping it.
When it breaks

When it breaks

Zapier links no help article to Memberful, so the cases below come from Zapier's general limits and from what the triggers say about themselves.

The tricky cases here are Zaps that run on the wrong event, or miss one. Check these four before publishing; for anything else, see our Zapier troubleshooting page.

  • Existing members are not sent

A Zap only reacts to events after it is switched on. Members, orders and subscriptions that already existed are left out; moving them is a separate job.
  • Renewals missing from your sales sheet

Order Purchased is not sent for subscription renewal orders. Renewals have their own trigger, Subscription Renewed: check at the test what it carries before you rely on it.
  • A big import is held back

After a bulk import of members, a trigger that suddenly sends a huge batch can be held back by Zapier's flood protection.
  • A Zap that restarts itself

As a general precaution, a Zap that writes into the place its own trigger watches can set itself off again. With no Memberful action, it can only happen through another tool.

FAQ

Memberful Zapier FAQ

01Is the Memberful Zapier integration free?
Yes. Memberful is not reserved for paid plans, so it runs on Zapier's free plan. That plan gives 100 tasks a month and as many Zaps as you want, each limited to two steps: one trigger and one action. New Member feeding your email tool fits within it. A filter or a second action turns the Zap into a multi-step Zap, and that needs a paid plan, because the free plan stops at two steps.
02How many tasks does a Memberful Zap use?
One task per action that succeeds in the other tool. The Memberful trigger is free, and waiting for events costs nothing. A Zap that adds a spreadsheet row for each order uses one task per order. If it also sends an email, that is two tasks per order. An action that fails is not counted. Subscription Renewed fires on every renewal, so each renewal is one more run, and each action in that Zap counts every time.
03Do Memberful triggers run in real time?
Yes. All 14 triggers are instant: Memberful tells Zapier the moment a member signs up, buys, renews or changes something, and the Zap starts without waiting for a check, so a refund or a renewal reaches your other tools as it happens. That is true on every plan, the free one included. The interval grid of the plans only concerns polling triggers, and Memberful has none. In the editor, a Zap built on an instant trigger shows a lightning bolt.
04What does connecting Memberful to Zapier require?
An account on Memberful, plus read or write access on anything you do not own yourself and want the Zap to touch. In Zapier, open the Apps page, click + Add connection, search Memberful, click Add connection, sign in in the tab that opens and grant access. Once linked, the connection serves every Zap that starts from Memberful. Keep in mind that only events after the Zap is switched on are sent.
05Why didn't Order Purchased fire on a subscription renewal?
Because Memberful does not send renewal orders through Order Purchased. That trigger covers orders a member completes and orders your team adds by hand, but renewals of an existing subscription go through Subscription Renewed instead. If your sales spreadsheet only listens to Order Purchased, every renewal is missing from it. If renewals matter to you, look at what Subscription Renewed carries at the test before building a second Zap on it.
06What if the Memberful operation is missing?
Check the Memberful page on Zapier first: it shows the current list, 14 triggers at the time of writing, with no action and no search. So any step that should write into Memberful, like creating a member or changing a subscription, cannot be done from Zapier. What Zapier can do is carry Memberful events into other tools. Anything that must change inside Memberful has to be done there, by hand or by the app itself.
07Zapier, Make or n8n for Memberful?
Choose on criteria, not on a ranking. Direction first: on Zapier, Memberful only sends events out, with 14 instant triggers and no action, so check whether the other platform can also write into Memberful if you need that. Then the tools on the receiving end: the useful Zap is the one that reaches the app your team works in. Finally volume: Zapier bills each successful action as a task, so count renewals and orders before choosing a plan.
