Overview

What the Memegen.link Zapier integration does for you

The Memegen.link Zapier integration turns text from your other tools into image memes. Memegen.link is a free, open source meme generator. On Zapier it offers one trigger for new templates, three ways to create a meme, and three searches to find a template or an example first.

A meme from a phrase someone typed. Create Meme From Text takes a word or phrase and matches it with common meme patterns. Feed it a message from your team chat and the Zap hands back a ready image.

A meme on your own picture. Create Meme From Image puts up to two lines of text on a background image you point to by its address. A product shot or a team photo can carry the caption.

A heads-up when the catalogue grows. New Template tells you when a new meme template is available, so whoever runs your social posts sees it without browsing the library.

What Zapier doesn't do here. No trigger is instant: Zapier checks for new templates at the interval of your plan. There is no action to post the meme anywhere; another app does that in a later step. And nothing edits or deletes a meme once it is made.

To learn how to chain these steps, open our Zapier training page. If you are weighing other tools, see our Zapier alternatives guide.

Vocabulary

Zapier words, in plain English

Eight words carry this page. Below, each one is used exactly as defined here.

Zap
The automation you build on Zapier: one trigger, then one or more actions that run every time that trigger event happens.
Trigger
The event in an app that starts the Zap. Once the Zap is on, Zapier waits for it. Memegen.link offers one.
Action
What the Zap does once it has started: the step that writes, sends or moves something for you, such as making a meme.
Task
The unit Zapier bills: one action your Zap completes successfully. The allowance on your plan is a count of these.
Polling trigger
A trigger Zapier checks on a timer, asking the app for new items and keeping only the unseen ones. New Template works this way.
Instant trigger
A trigger the app reports itself the moment the event happens, with no check to wait for. Memegen.link has none.
Filter
A Zapier step that lets the Zap go on only when what arrived meets your condition. Not to be confused with the Filter field of two searches.
Search step
A step that looks up something that already exists, here a template or an example meme, so later steps can use it.
Cost

What Memegen.link costs you in Zapier tasks

The trigger never costs a task, and Zapier checking for new templates costs nothing either, however often it looks. Only a completed action is billed: each meme created counts as one task, and an action that fails isn't counted.

  • Trigger and checks0 tasks
  • Each meme created1 task
  • Free plan100 tasks a month, two-step Zaps
  • Premium appNo

Memegen.link isn't a premium app, so it runs on the free plan: 100 tasks a month, unlimited Zaps, two steps each. A filter, a search or a second action turns the Zap into a multi-step Zap, which needs a paid plan, and a Zap that makes a meme then posts it is already one. The grid below sets how often Zapier checks New Template, by plan; on paid plans that interval can be changed. A few apps and actions take more than one task, so read the count after a first test.

Connect

Connect Memegen.link to Zapier in three steps

  1. 01

Open Apps and add a connection

In your Zapier account, open the Apps page and click + Add connection. A dialog with a search box opens: type Memegen.link and pick it from the list of results.

  2. 02

    Sign in to Memegen.link

Click Add connection. Memegen.link opens in a new tab: sign in with your account there. You need an account on the app, plus read or write access on anything you don't own yourself and want the Zap to touch.

  3. 03

    Grant access

Sign in to Memegen.link in the tab that opens and grant Zapier access to the account. The connection is saved once; every Memegen.link step in every Zap then picks it from a list.

First Zap

Your first Zap: new templates posted to your team chat

GoalWhen Memegen.link adds a meme template, post it in your team chat, with a filter that keeps only the templates you care about.

  1. 01

Create the Zap on New Template

Create a Zap, pick Memegen.link as the trigger app and New Template as the event. The connection you set up earlier appears in the account list.

  2. 02

    Test the trigger

Run the test. Zapier brings back the three most recent templates, so the mapping is done on real templates rather than on an empty example.

  3. 03

    Add the filter

From the plus icon, add a filter and fill its three boxes: the field to look at, the rule, the value. Use a text rule on text. The filter makes the Zap multi-step, so it needs a paid plan.

  4. 04

    Add the chat message

Pick your team chat and its action to send a message. Build the text from the template details that came back, checking in the test result which values really arrive.

  5. 05

    Test, then publish

Test the action and read the message in the channel. Then publish the Zap to switch it on. Templates added before that moment are not sent.

Triggers

The Memegen.link trigger

1 event starts a Zap when something happens in Memegen.link. Zapier checks for them at the interval your plan allows.

1

New Template

Polling trigger

In Zapier“Triggers when a new meme template is available.”

Starts your Zap when a new meme template becomes available on Memegen.link. It is the only trigger of the app, and the template it reports can feed a Create Meme step right after.

How it fires
Zapier goes and looks at regular intervals, and how often depends on your plan: every 15 minutes on the free one
When to use it
a social or community team wants to hear about fresh formats while they are still new.
Watch out
Zapier remembers the templates it has already seen, so each one starts the Zap once; templates from before publishing are skipped.
Actions

The 3 Memegen.link actions

Memegen.link gives you 3 actions. For each one: what it does for you, when to reach for it, and what to watch out for.

1

Create Meme

Action

In Zapier“Creates an image meme from one of the available templates.”

Builds an image meme from one of the available templates, with the text you pass in.

When to use it
you know which template fits and want the caption filled from a previous step.
Watch out
Template and Text Lines are required; most templates take up to two lines, and a slash leaves a line blank.
2

Create Meme From Image

Action

In Zapier“Creates an image meme using a custom background image.”

Puts text on a background image of your own instead of a stock template.

When to use it
the picture matters, such as a product photo or an event shot, and the caption comes from another tool.
Watch out
Image URL and Text Lines are required; up to two lines, with a slash for a blank one.
3

Create Meme From Text

Action

In Zapier“Creates an image meme automatically from a word or phrase.”

Turns a word or a phrase into a meme by matching it with common meme patterns, so you don't have to pick a template.

When to use it
the input is free text, like a chat message, and the Zap should choose the format.
Watch out
Text is required; switch on Safe for work? to leave out unvetted images and reduce offensive language.
Searches

The 3 Memegen.link searches

3 search steps look for data that already exists in Memegen.link, so a later step can use it.

A search step looks up something that already exists on Memegen.link and hands it to the steps after it. Use one to find the right template or an example before a Create action. The searches sit at the bottom of the action-event list, under their own SEARCH heading, and each one makes the Zap multi-step.

1

Find Custom Meme

Search

In Zapier“Finds a popular custom meme matching the text specified.”

Looks for a popular custom meme that matches the text you give, so the Zap can reuse something people already know.

When to use it
a keyword from another tool should bring back a ready-made meme instead of a new one.
Watch out
switch on Safe for work? if the result may be shown publicly.
2

Find Example Meme

Search

In Zapier“Finds an example meme matching the template name or example text specified.”

Finds an example meme whose template name or example text matches what you enter in its Filter field.

When to use it
you want to show what a format looks like before a Create step uses it.
Watch out
this Filter is a required field of the search, not the Zapier filter step.
3

Find Template

Search

In Zapier“Finds a meme template matching the name or example text specified.”

Returns a meme template matching the name or example text you type, which a following Create Meme can then use.

When to use it
the template is described in words by a person or another tool, not chosen from the list.
Watch out
the Filter field is required; whether it wants an exact name is decided by Memegen.link, so test with real wording.

The three settings every search exposes

  1. Successful if no search results are found?
Left on its default, a search that finds nothing stops the Zap there and the steps that depend on it are skipped. Switched on, the Zap carries on without a result.
  2. Create X if it doesn't exist yet?
Ticking it turns a search into a find-or-create. Zapier lists no such variant for Memegen.link, so don't count on it: check at the test step whether the box shows up at all, and treat a missing template as a search with no result.
  3. If multiple search results are found?
Three ways out when several items match: keep the first one, which is the default, stop the Zap, or hand all of them on at once.
When it breaks

When a Memegen.link Zap breaks

Zapier documents no rate limit or error message specific to Memegen.link. What goes wrong comes from the general rules of Zapier and from the required fields of the actions.

Four cases to know before switching a Zap on: three from Zapier itself, one from the way memes are built.

  • Nothing from before the Zap

A Zap only reacts to what happens after you switch it on. Templates added earlier are not picked up by New Template.
  • Bulk arrivals held back

A trigger that suddenly returns a huge batch, after a bulk import or a migration, can be held back by the flood protection of Zapier.
  • A Zap that sets itself off

A Zap that writes into the very place its own trigger watches can start itself again and burn through tasks. Keep the trigger and the target apart.
  • Too many lines of text

Most templates support up to two lines of text. Check at the test step how a longer caption from an earlier step comes out; a slash leaves a line blank.

FAQ

Memegen.link and Zapier: questions people ask

01Is the Memegen.link Zapier integration free?
Yes. Memegen.link isn't a premium app, so its trigger, actions and searches all work on the free plan of Zapier. That plan gives 100 tasks a month and an unlimited number of Zaps, each limited to two steps: one trigger and one action. New Template followed by Create Meme fits. A meme that must also be posted somewhere needs a second action, which makes the Zap multi-step and calls for a paid plan.
02How many tasks does a Memegen.link Zap use?
One per meme created, nothing for the trigger. Zapier checking for new templates costs nothing, however often it runs. A Zap that makes a meme from a chat message and posts it back uses two tasks per run, one for each successful action. An action that fails isn't counted. A few apps and actions take more than one task, so read the count after your first test to see how searches are counted on your account.
03Is Memegen.link on Zapier real time?
No. New Template is a polling trigger: Zapier asks Memegen.link for new templates at a fixed interval and keeps only the ones it hasn't seen. The interval depends on your plan: every 15 minutes on Free, every 2 on Professional, every minute on Team and Enterprise. The type is set by the app and can't be changed in the editor. On paid plans, the interval can be changed and a check can be run by hand from the editor.
04What does it take to connect Memegen.link to Zapier?
An account on Memegen.link, plus read or write access on anything you don't own yourself and want the Zap to touch. On the Apps page of Zapier, click + Add connection, search for Memegen.link, click Add connection, sign in in the tab that opens and grant access. The connection is saved and reused by every Memegen.link step. Keep a template name and a public image address ready, since Create Meme and Create Meme From Image require them.
05How many lines of text can a Memegen.link meme take?
Up to two on most templates, and up to two on Create Meme From Image as well. A caption coming from another tool may not respect that, so check at the test step how it comes out, and split long text into two lines. To leave a line empty on purpose, put a slash in it. Create Meme From Text works differently: it takes a word or phrase and matches it with common meme patterns.
06What if the Memegen.link operation you want isn't on Zapier?
Then it isn't part of the integration today. The Memegen.link page on Zapier shows the current list, so check it first. In the list read for this page, posting, storing or sending the meme is not there: those moves belong to the app you add after the Create step. If the gap is choosing a format, Find Template and Find Example Meme can do it from text. Anything else needs a step in another app.
07Zapier, Make or n8n for Memegen.link?
Pick on criteria, not on a ranking. On Zapier, Memegen.link brings one polling trigger, three create actions and three searches, all on the free plan. On Make or n8n, first check whether a Memegen.link connector exists and what it covers. Then compare how each platform counts usage, how many steps a make-then-post flow needs, and who will look after it. On Zapier, the post step alone already makes the Zap multi-step.
