Overview

What the Mistral AI Zapier integration actually does

Connecting Mistral AI to Zapier means plugging its models into an automation that something else sets off. A new lead, a new ticket, a new file arrives in one of your tools, and a Mistral AI step does the thinking: it writes, it describes, it encodes. Zapier then passes the result to whatever comes next.

Three typical results, each tied to a real action. A first-draft answer: a customer question lands, Create Chat Completion writes a reply your team only has to check. A written description of a picture: a product photo or a scanned receipt arrives, Analyze Image (Vision) says what is in it, in the words your prompt asks for. A numeric fingerprint of a text: Create Embeddings turns a paragraph into a vector you can store and compare later, the raw material of a semantic search.

Now what Zapier does not do here. Mistral AI has no trigger on Zapier, so nothing that happens inside Mistral can set a Zap off. There is no search step either: you cannot look up a past answer. And everything beyond the three actions goes through API Request (Beta), which is a technical tool, not a shortcut.

If you are weighing other platforms for the same job, the n8n vs Zapier comparison lays out the criteria, and the Zapier review covers the tool as a whole.

Vocabulary

Zapier vocabulary in one minute

Seven words come back on every Zapier page. Here they are in plain English, once, before the rest of the page uses them.

Zap
The automation you build: one trigger, then one or more actions that run each time the trigger event happens.
Trigger
The event in an app that starts the Zap. Once the Zap is on, Zapier waits for it. Mistral AI has none.
Action
What the Zap does once started: the step that writes, sends or moves something for you. All 4 Mistral AI operations are actions.
Task
The unit Zapier bills: one action your Zap completes successfully. The number on your plan counts those.
Polling vs instant
A polling trigger is checked on a timer by Zapier. An instant trigger is reported by the app itself, the moment the event happens.
Filter
A step that lets the Zap go on only when what arrived meets your condition, and stops it otherwise.
Multi-step Zap
Any Zap beyond one trigger and one action. A second action or a filter makes one, and it needs a paid plan.
Cost

What a Mistral AI Zap really costs

Mistral AI is not a premium app on Zapier, so it works from the free plan. The billing logic is simple once you know where the tasks go.

  • Free plan100 tasks per month, unlimited Zaps
  • Free plan Zap size2 steps: one trigger, one action
  • Mistral AI premium appNo
  • Billed per run1 task per successful Mistral AI action

The trigger never costs a task, and neither do the checks Zapier runs to look for new data. Each Mistral AI action that succeeds counts as one task, so a Zap that drafts a reply and then encodes it costs two per run; one that fails is not counted. The catch: the free plan stops at two steps. Add a filter to skip empty prompts, or a second action to save the reply, and the Zap becomes multi-step, which means a paid plan. Mistral AI itself costs no extra on the Zapier side.

Connect

Connect Mistral AI to Zapier in 3 steps

  1. 01

    Open your connected apps

In your Zapier account, go to the Apps page and click + Add connection. You need a Mistral AI account first, with access to whatever the Zap will use if it belongs to someone else.

  2. 02

    Pick Mistral AI

Type Mistral AI in the search box of the dialog, select it, then click Add connection. A new tab opens on the Mistral AI side, where the actual sign-in happens; keep it in front of you.

  3. 03

    Sign in and allow access

Log in to Mistral AI in that tab and grant Zapier access to the account. The connection is then saved once and reused by every Mistral AI step you add later, in any Zap.

First Zap

Your first Zap: a support form answered by Mistral AI

GoalEach new support form response gets a first-draft reply written by Mistral AI, only when the message field is filled.

  1. 01

Create the Zap and pick the trigger

Start a new Zap and choose your form tool with its new response event. Mistral AI cannot be this first step: it has no trigger.

  2. 02

    Test the trigger

Run the test. Zapier brings back the three most recent responses of the connected account, so you build the rest on a real one.

  3. 03

    Add a filter

Click the plus icon, choose Filter, then fill its three boxes: the message field, a text rule, and the value to compare with. Text rules only work on text.

  4. 04

    Add Create Chat Completion

Add Mistral AI with Create Chat Completion. In Prompt, write your instruction and map the message from the form into it.

  5. 05

    Test, then publish

Test the Mistral AI step, read the reply it sends back, then click Publish. The filter makes this a multi-step Zap: plan for a paid plan.

Actions

The 4 Mistral AI actions, by what they produce

Mistral AI gives you 4 actions. For each one: what it does for you, when to reach for it, and what to watch out for.

1

Create Chat Completion

Action

In Zapier“Generate a chat completion using Mistral AI models”

Sends your instruction to a Mistral AI model and hands back the written answer, ready for the next step to use.

When to use it
a sales rep wants every inbound demo request summarized in three lines before the call.
Watch out
the Prompt field is required, so an empty mapped value leaves the model with nothing to answer.
2

Create Embeddings

Action

In Zapier“Generate text embeddings using Mistral AI models”

Turns a piece of text into embeddings, a numeric version of its meaning that lets two texts be compared by sense rather than by exact words.

When to use it
a documentation team encodes each new help article so it can later be matched against incoming questions.
Watch out
Text to Embed is required, and the result only helps if a later step stores it somewhere.
3

Analyze Image (Vision)

Action

In Zapier“Analyze an image with a vision-capable Mistral model via Chat Completions.”

Hands an image to a vision-capable Mistral model and gets back a text answer to the question you asked about it.

When to use it
an e-commerce manager wants a first alt-text drafted for each new product photo.
Watch out
the Prompt is required here too: say exactly what to look for, or the description stays vague.
4

API Request (Beta)

Action

In Zapier“This is an advanced action which makes a raw HTTP request that includes this integration's authentication.”

An advanced action that sends a raw HTTP request to Mistral AI with your connection already attached, for what the three ready-made actions do not cover.

When to use it
a developer on your team needs a Mistral AI feature that no action exposes yet.
Watch out
Stop on error decides whether a failed call halts the Zap; set it to Yes unless a silent failure is acceptable.
When it breaks

When a Mistral AI Zap breaks

Most failures here are not Mistral AI bugs. They come from how Zaps work in general, and they show up the same way on every app.

Four cases come back again and again. None of them needs code to fix, but each one needs to be known before you publish. If a Zap still misbehaves, the Zapier troubleshooting page goes through the usual suspects.

  • Old data is never processed

A Zap only reacts to what happens after you switch it on. Form responses from last month will not reach Mistral AI: moving that backlog is a separate job.
  • A Zap that feeds itself

If the reply written by Mistral AI lands in the very place your trigger watches, the Zap sets itself off again and again and burns through your tasks.
  • A sudden flood is held back

After a bulk import, the trigger app can return a huge batch at once. Zapier's flood protection may hold it, rather than send hundreds of prompts in one go.
  • API Request errors pass silently

With Stop on error set to No, API Request (Beta) runs on whatever comes back, error included. The next steps then work on an error message instead of an answer.

FAQ

Mistral AI Zapier integration: frequent questions

01Is the Mistral AI Zapier integration free?
Yes, on the Zapier side it works on the free plan, because Mistral AI is not a premium app. The free plan gives 100 tasks per month and unlimited Zaps, but each Zap is limited to two steps: one trigger and one action. The moment you add a filter, a second action or a search, the Zap becomes multi-step and needs a paid plan. The trigger app you pair it with has to be available on your plan too.
02How many tasks does a Mistral AI Zap use?
One task per Mistral AI action that completes successfully. The trigger costs nothing, and the checks Zapier runs to look for new items cost nothing either. A Zap with one trigger and Create Chat Completion therefore uses one task per run. Add Create Embeddings after it and the same run costs two. An action that fails is not counted against your plan. Zapier also notes that a few apps and actions take more than one task when they complete, so glance at your usage after the first runs.
03Does Mistral AI on Zapier run in real time?
It depends entirely on the trigger, because Mistral AI has none of its own. If the app that starts the Zap has an instant trigger, it reports the event at once and the Mistral AI step runs straight away. If that trigger is a polling one, Zapier checks on a timer: every 15 minutes on Free, 2 on Professional, 1 on Team and Enterprise. Look for the lightning bolt in the editor to tell them apart.
04What does it take to connect Mistral AI to Zapier?
A Mistral AI account and a Zapier account are what you need to start, and the Mistral AI app works on every Zapier plan. From the Apps page in Zapier, click + Add connection, pick Mistral AI, sign in on the tab that opens and grant access. If the Zap touches resources owned by a colleague, you also need read or write access to them. The connection is saved once and every later Mistral AI step reuses it.
05Why can't Mistral AI start a Zap?
Because the Mistral AI app on Zapier exposes no trigger at all, only four actions. Nothing that happens inside Mistral AI can be watched by Zapier. The Zap always starts in another tool, such as a form, a CRM or a help desk, and Mistral AI comes in as the second step. In practice this is rarely a problem: the useful event is almost always the arrival of a question, a file or a lead elsewhere.
06What if the Mistral AI action needed is not in the list?
Then API Request (Beta) is the way in. It sends a raw HTTP request to Mistral AI with the connection already attached, so there is no key to paste. It only accepts URLs on domains tied to Mistral AI, and it asks for a method and a URL. It is a technical step: someone has to know the Mistral AI API to set it up, and to choose whether an error should stop the Zap.
07Zapier, Make or n8n for Mistral AI?
It comes down to criteria rather than a winner. On Zapier, Mistral AI offers four actions and no trigger, works on the free plan, and bills one task per successful action. The questions to ask of any platform are the same: can the AI step start the flow, what does each run cost, and how much technical work does an unsupported feature require. The comparison pages on this site put the three side by side on those points.
