What the Muster Zapier integration does for you
The Muster Zapier integration connects your advocacy campaigns to the rest of your tools. When a contact takes action in a campaign, or signs up through an action form or a contact form, Zapier hears about it right away and passes the details on. In the other direction, it can create contacts in Muster from another app.
Three results show what that gives you. A running log of campaign activity: Advocacy Action starts a Zap each time a contact acts in a campaign, so a spreadsheet gets a new row and your reporting builds itself. A welcome that goes out on its own: New Signup fires when someone signs up via an action form or a contact form, and the next step can send that person a first email from your email tool. Contacts that arrive from elsewhere: Create Contact adds a new Muster contact from another app, such as a form you run outside Muster.
Both triggers are instant: Muster tells Zapier the moment something happens, so the free plan reacts as fast as a paid one.
Now what Zapier does not do with Muster. There is no search step, so a Zap cannot look anything up in Muster. There is no action to update or delete a contact, and none to manage campaigns. Everything else stays inside Muster. For a broader take on the tool itself, see our Zapier review.
Zapier vocabulary, in one minute
A handful of Zapier words come back throughout this page. Here they are, once.
- Zap
- The automation you build on Zapier: one trigger, then one or more actions that run every time the trigger event happens.
- Trigger
- The event in an app that starts the Zap, such as a new signup in Muster. Once the Zap is on, Zapier waits for it.
- Action
- What the Zap does after it starts: the step that writes, sends or moves something for you, like creating a contact.
- Task
- The unit Zapier bills: one action your Zap completes successfully. The allowance on your plan is a count of those.
- Instant trigger
- A trigger the app reports itself: it calls Zapier the moment the event happens. Both Muster triggers work this way.
- Polling trigger
- A trigger Zapier checks on a timer, asking the app for new items at a fixed interval. Many other apps work this way.
- Filter
- A step that lets the Zap go on only when what arrived meets the condition you set, and stops it otherwise.
What a Muster Zap really costs
Muster is not a premium app on Zapier, so it works from the free plan. Its two triggers are instant, which matters more than it sounds.
- Muster triggers that are instant2 out of 2
- Tasks on the free plan100 per month
- Steps per Zap on the free plan2 (one trigger, one action)
- Paid plan required for MusterNo
The trigger never costs a task; only an action that succeeds is counted, and an action that fails is not. A Zap made of New Signup plus one email therefore uses one task per signup. The free plan gives 100 tasks a month and unlimited Zaps, each limited to two steps: one trigger, one action. A filter or a second action makes it a multi-step Zap, which needs a paid plan. The interval grid below applies to polling triggers only, so it does not apply to Muster's two instant triggers; it only matters when another app's polling trigger feeds Create Contact.
Connect Muster to Zapier in three steps
- 01
Open the Apps page
In your Zapier account, open Apps and click + Add connection. You need a Muster account, plus read or write access on anything you do not own yourself and want the Zap to touch.
- 02
Pick Muster
Type Muster in the dialog, choose it from the results, then click Add connection. A new browser tab then opens so you can sign in to your Muster account.
- 03
Sign in and grant access
Sign in to Muster in that tab and grant Zapier access to the account. The connection is saved, and every Muster trigger or action in your Zaps reuses it.
Your first Zap: log every advocacy action in a spreadsheet
GoalEach time a contact takes action in a Muster campaign, a filter checks the condition you choose, then a new row lands in your spreadsheet.
- 01
Build the Zap
Create a Zap, choose Muster as the trigger app and Advocacy Action as the event. Connect your Muster account and continue.
- 02
Test the trigger
Run the test. Zapier brings back the three most recent items of the connected account, so you map fields on a real action and see what it carries.
- 03
Add the filter
Click the plus icon, choose Filter, and set its three boxes: the field, the rule, the value. This step needs a paid plan, because it makes the Zap multi-step.
- 04
Add the spreadsheet row
Add your spreadsheet app and its add-row action. Map the values from the Muster trigger into your columns, one by one. Check on the test that each column gets a value.
- 05
Test, then publish
Test the action and look at the row it created. If the columns line up, click Publish. The editor shows a lightning bolt on this instant trigger.
The 2 Muster triggers
2 events start a Zap when something happens in Muster, and 2 of them are instant: the app calls Zapier straight away, whatever your plan.
Advocacy Action
Instant triggerIn Zapier“Triggers when a contact takes action in an advocacy campaign.”
Starts a Zap whenever a contact takes action in one of your advocacy campaigns. It turns campaign activity into something your other tools can see, count and react to.
New Signup
Instant triggerIn Zapier“Triggers when a new contact signs up via action form or contact form.”
Fires when a new contact signs up through an action form or a contact form in Muster. This is the moment to say hello, add the person to a list or alert whoever follows up.
The Muster action
Muster gives you 1 action. For each one: what it does for you, when to reach for it, and what to watch out for.
Operations index
Create Contact
ActionIn Zapier“Create a new Muster contact.”
Adds a new contact to Muster from data coming out of another app, so people you meet outside Muster still end up in your campaigns.
When a Muster Zap breaks
Zapier attaches no help article to Muster, and no limit specific to the app is on record. What can go wrong comes from how every Zap behaves.
Four cases are worth knowing before you publish. If one of them shows up, see our Zapier troubleshooting guide.
Earlier signups are not sent
A Zap only reacts to what happens after it is switched on. Actions and signups that already existed stay out; moving that backlog is a separate job.A Zap that sets itself off
As a general precaution: a Zap that writes into the very place its own trigger watches can start itself again and again, and burns through tasks fast.A sudden flood
If a trigger suddenly returns a huge batch, after a bulk import or a migration, Zapier's flood protection can hold those runs back. The same item twice
On a polling trigger in another app feeding Create Contact, Zapier keeps track of what it has already seen, so the same item does not start the Zap twice.
