Perplexity Zapier integrationAutomate Perplexity with Zapier.

The Perplexity Zapier integration has 0 triggers, 3 actions and 0 searches. Perplexity never starts a Zap: another app does, and Perplexity answers a question or searches the web in the middle. Here is how to build that, and what it costs.

Overview

What the Perplexity Zapier integration is for

It lets a Zap ask Perplexity something and pass the reply to the next step. Perplexity is an AI search engine: you give it a question, it looks on the web and answers, with its sources. On Zapier it only acts, so the Zap always starts in another tool.

Three results you can build. A researched answer: a question arrives from a form or a CRM, Create Agent Response sends it to Perplexity, and the answer comes back with its sources, ready for the next step. A list of web results: Search runs a query, or several related ones, and returns ranked results instead of a written answer. A migration: if an older Zap still uses Chat Completion, the action that replaces it is already there.

What it does not do. Perplexity has no trigger on Zapier, so nothing that happens in Perplexity can start a Zap. There is no search step either, in the Zapier sense of looking up an existing item. And a Perplexity answer that stays inside the Zap is useless: you need one more step to send it somewhere, which matters for your plan.

The same app exists on the two other platforms: the Perplexity n8n integration and the Perplexity Make integration are worth a look if you compare.

Vocabulary

Zapier words in one minute

New to Zapier? These are the only terms the rest of the page uses.

Zap
The automation you build: one trigger, then one or more actions that run every time that trigger happens.
Trigger
The event that starts the Zap. With Perplexity, it always comes from another app, never from Perplexity.
Action
What the Zap does once started. All three Perplexity operations are actions: they ask, search or answer.
Task
What Zapier bills: one action that completed successfully. Your plan counts these, and nothing else.
Polling or instant
A polling trigger is checked on a timer; an instant one is reported by its app right away. It depends on the app that starts the Zap.
Filter
A step that lets the Zap carry on only when what arrived matches your condition, and stops it otherwise.
Multi-step Zap
Any Zap beyond one trigger and one action. A second action or a filter makes it one, and it needs a paid plan.
Connection
Your Perplexity account, linked to Zapier once, then reused by every Perplexity step in every Zap.
Cost

What it really costs

Perplexity is not a premium app on Zapier, so you can use it from the free plan.

  • Trigger and checks0 tasks
  • Each successful Perplexity action1 task
  • Free plan100 tasks a month, two steps per Zap
  • Premium appNo

The trigger of the other app costs nothing, and neither do Zapier's checks. Each Perplexity action that succeeds counts one task; one that fails is not counted. The free plan gives 100 tasks a month but only two-step Zaps: a trigger plus Perplexity, and the answer stops there. To send that answer anywhere, you add a second action, the Zap becomes multi-step and needs a paid plan. On the Perplexity side, the Preset field of Create Agent Response warns that higher presets cost more and take longer.

Connect

Connect Perplexity to Zapier in three steps

  1. 01

    Open your connections

In your Zapier account, open the Apps page and click + Add connection. You need a Perplexity account before you start, the account every Perplexity action of the Zap will run on.

  2. 02

    Pick Perplexity

Search for Perplexity in the dialog, select it in the list, then click Add connection. A new browser tab opens so you can sign in on the Perplexity side.

  3. 03

    Sign in and grant access

Log in to Perplexity in that tab and allow Zapier to use the account. Back in Zapier, the connection is listed, and every Perplexity step in every Zap can pick it.

First Zap

Your first Zap: research every new company in your CRM

GoalWhen a company is added to your CRM, ask Perplexity for a short sourced brief on it and write that brief back on the record.

  1. 01

    Create the Zap

Start a new Zap and pick your CRM as the trigger app, with its event for a new company. Test it: Zapier brings back the three most recent items.

  2. 02

    Add the Perplexity action

Add an action, choose Perplexity and Create Agent Response, then select your connection. Set the Preset, starting on a low one.

  3. 03

    Write the question

In User message, write the task and add the company name, as the trigger test brought it back,, so each run asks about the right company.

  4. 04

    Send the answer back

Add a second action in your CRM and map the Perplexity answer into a note or a text field of that same company record, so the team sees it.

  5. 05

    Test, then publish

Test each step, read the answer it produced, then click Publish. With two actions this is a multi-step Zap: it needs a paid plan.

Actions

The Perplexity actions

Perplexity gives you 3 actions. For each one: what it does for you, when to reach for it, and what to watch out for.

1

Create Agent Response

Action

In Zapier“Asks Perplexity a question using the Agent API and returns a web-grounded answer with sources. Replaces the Chat Completion action.”

Hands a question or a task to Perplexity, which researches it on the web and replies with an answer backed by its sources. You choose how deep it goes through a Preset, from Fast for quick lookups to Xhigh for open-ended tasks.

When to use it
a sales rep wants a sourced summary of each new account before the first call.
Watch out
higher presets cost more and take longer, so match the preset to the question.
2

Chat Completion

Action

In Zapier“Generates a model's response for the given chat conversation. Perplexity retires this Sonar endpoint on September 27, 2026. Use the Create Agent Response action instead.”

The older way to get an answer: you pick a model, send a message, and get the model's reply. Its description on Zapier gives September 27, 2026 as the date Perplexity retires it, a date already past when this page was checked, and points to Create Agent Response instead.

When to use it
only to read what an existing Zap does before you rebuild it on the newer action.
Watch out
when moving, sonar maps to Fast, sonar-pro to Low, sonar-reasoning-pro to Medium and sonar-deep-research to High.
When it breaks

When a Perplexity Zap breaks

Zapier attaches one getting-started article to Perplexity, and no rate limit specific to the app is on record. Here is what is known to go wrong.

Four cases to check before you publish. The first one is specific to Perplexity, with a date already past; the other three come with every Zap, whatever the app.

  • A Zap still on Chat Completion

Chat Completion was due to be retired by Perplexity on September 27, 2026, and that date has passed. A Zap built on it should be rebuilt on Create Agent Response.
  • The answer is slow or expensive

Medium, High and Xhigh presets run deeper, multi-step research. They cost more and take longer than Fast or Low, which adds up on a busy Zap.
  • Nothing from before the Zap

A Zap only reacts to what happens after you publish it. Questions or records that existed before stay unanswered, and processing that backlog is a separate job.
  • A huge batch arrives at once

If the starting app suddenly returns a very large batch, after a bulk import or a migration, Zapier's flood protection can hold it back instead of running it.

FAQ

Perplexity Zapier integration: common questions

01Is the Perplexity Zapier integration free?
On the Zapier side, it works from the free plan, since Perplexity is not a premium app. That plan gives 100 tasks a month and unlimited Zaps, but only two steps per Zap. With Perplexity that is tight: the trigger comes from another app and Perplexity takes the only action, so the answer has nowhere to go. As soon as you add a step to send or store that answer, the Zap is multi-step and needs a paid plan. Separately, the Preset you pick in Create Agent Response matters: higher presets cost more.
02How many tasks does a Perplexity Zap use?
One task per action that succeeds. The trigger, which comes from another app, costs nothing, and neither do Zapier's checks for new data. Each Create Agent Response, Search or Chat Completion that completes counts one task, and the step that sends the answer elsewhere counts one more. An action that fails is not counted. A filter placed before Perplexity is a cheap way to save tasks: a run it stops never reaches the paid steps.
03Can Perplexity start a Zap in real time?
No, Perplexity has no trigger on Zapier at all, so it cannot start a Zap, in real time or otherwise. The Zap starts in another app, and the speed depends on that app's trigger. If it is instant, the app tells Zapier the moment something happens, whatever your plan. If it is polling, Zapier checks at regular intervals: every 15 minutes on Free, 2 on Professional, 1 on Team and Enterprise. Pick the starting app with that in mind.
04What do you need to connect Perplexity to Zapier?
A Perplexity account, since every action runs on it. In Zapier, open the Apps page, click + Add connection, pick Perplexity and click Add connection, then sign in to Perplexity in the tab that opens and grant access. That is all for the link itself. The fields come next: Create Agent Response needs a Preset and a User message, Search needs a Search query, and Chat Completion needs a Model and a User Message.
05Should you still use Chat Completion?
No. The action's own description gave September 27, 2026 as the date Perplexity retires it, and that date has now passed; it points to Create Agent Response instead. Moving is mostly a matter of choosing the matching Preset: sonar becomes Fast, sonar-pro becomes Low, sonar-reasoning-pro becomes Medium and sonar-deep-research becomes High. Rebuild the step, test it on a real item, compare the answer with the old one, then publish. Keep the old Zap off once the new one runs.
06What if the Perplexity operation you need is not there?
On Zapier you have three actions: ask for an agent answer, run a web search, and Chat Completion, whose retirement date has passed. No trigger, no search step. If you need something else, start by checking whether another step of the Zap can cover it, for example a filter before Perplexity. Otherwise, look at the same app on another platform: the Perplexity pages for n8n and Make on this site show what each one offers.
07Zapier, Make or n8n for Perplexity?
Judge it on criteria, not on a ranking. On Zapier, Perplexity brings three actions: Create Agent Response for a sourced answer, Search for ranked web results, and Chat Completion, past its retirement date. Its constraints are concrete: no Perplexity trigger, so another app always starts the Zap, two-step Zaps on the free plan, and one task per successful action. Check what each platform offers for Perplexity, then weigh it against the tools your team already runs.
