Local SEO course 2026: the 9 best for teams, consultants and business owners
We compared local SEO courses for businesses and marketing teams: price per seat, length, live or on-demand, certificate, Google Business Profile and Apple Business Connect coverage.
The short answer, depending on your situation:
- You want a live day with an expert for your marketing team: brightonSEO's Local SEO, Google Business Profile & Apple Business Connect workshop. $900 at the early-bird rate, which rises later (full price $2,100) for one in-person day in San Diego, or £300 + VAT for the on-demand version.
- Your sites run on WordPress and you want a certificate: Yoast's Local SEO training, included in every paid Yoast plan (Premium is $118.80 a year ex VAT).
- Your company already pays for LinkedIn Learning: Learning Local SEO, 1 h 29 min, rated 4.7 out of 5 by 1,375 learners.
- You own a local business and want a long program: Coursera's Local Marketing specialization, 13 courses over about four months.
- You want a paid certificate with an exam: Moz Academy's Local SEO Certification, $395, six parts and about 8 to 10 hours, with a certificate and a LinkedIn badge once you pass the final exam.
- You want a free certificate: Semrush Academy's Local SEO Essentials, 16 lessons.
Local SEO is what puts your business in Google's map results and in Google Maps when someone nearby searches for what you sell. It rests on your Google Business Profile, your reviews, consistent name, address and phone number across the web (NAP), local pages on your site and, more and more, Apple Business Connect for iPhone users. We compared the curriculum, length, price, certificate and reviews of 18 English-language courses, then ranked nine. Here's the catch: most "best local SEO courses" lists are written by companies that sell one of the courses. And the price range is wide, from free to $900 for a single day.
The ranking is editorial: a sponsored spot is always labeled on its card, and no affiliate link changes a score. No Hack'celeration course is ranked. The scores are ours, averaged over five criteria.

brightonSEO · Local SEO, Google Business Profile & Apple Business Connect Training
brightonSEO's US local SEO workshop is a one-day, in-person session in San Diego, priced at $900 at the early-bird rate, which rises later; the page lists $2,100 as the full price. The trainer is Matthew Swan, who works at Uberall and is a Google Product Expert for Google Business Profile.
The agenda covers Google Business Profile, local optimization and an Apple Business Connect deep dive. That last part matters: Apple Business Connect is where you manage how your locations show up in Apple Maps, and it's the only course in this ranking that covers it in depth.
The live workshop is a full day's training, run once a year in the US, and its price rises as the date gets closer.
Can't travel? The on-demand version costs £300 + VAT and is taught by Greg Gifford in seven modules, including Google Business Profile Mastery, citations, reviews and local link building. brightonSEO says you receive a training certificate after completing it.
- A Google Product Expert for Business Profile as trainer
- Apple Business Connect covered in depth
- A live day or a seven-module on-demand version
- ✓The only live local SEO day we found in the US
- ✓Covers Apple Maps, not only Google
- ✓Two price points: $900 live or £300 + VAT on demand
- ✗One city only for the live day
- ✗The certificate is brightonSEO's own, not an accreditation
- ✗A single day: your team still needs a plan to apply it
- ✗The on-demand version is older: its page still sells local search "in a post-COVID world"
The best choice when you want your team in a room with a real local search expert for a day. If budget is tight, the on-demand version gives you most of the curriculum for a third of the price.
Yoast SEO Academy · Local SEO training
Yoast's academy includes a dedicated local SEO course. It runs 14 video lessons across five modules. Yoast gives two time estimates: under three hours if you're refreshing what you know, five to seven hours if you're new to local SEO and going in depth.
The course is included in all paid Yoast plans. Yoast SEO Premium costs $118.80 a year ex VAT, so the training comes with the plugin rather than on top of it. You get a certificate and a badge when you finish. Yoast is honest about what that means: it's not a formal third-party accreditation.
- Included in paid Yoast plans, plugin included
- Certificate and badge on completion
- Two learning paths: refresh or in depth
- ✓Very good value if you already pay for Yoast
- ✓Clear time estimates
- ✓Practical for WordPress site owners
- ✗Built around Yoast's ecosystem
- ✗No live instructor
- ✗The certificate is Yoast's own, not an accreditation
The best value for anyone running WordPress sites: you pay for the plugin and get the course. If your sites aren't on WordPress, part of the lessons won't apply.
Moz Academy · Local SEO Certification
Moz Academy's Local SEO Certification is a six-part series that combines video lessons with tasks and knowledge checks. Moz describes nearly six hours of on-demand, instructor-led content and an expected time commitment of about 8 to 10 hours, final exam included. The parts cover the fundamentals, local competitor research, establishing a business in the local space, reputation management and community engagement, and ongoing maintenance and measuring success.
Pass the final exam and you get a personalized certificate and a LinkedIn badge. The practical work runs mostly inside Moz tools (Keyword Explorer, Link Explorer, Moz Local, Moz Pro Campaigns), next to Google Business Profile and free tools. Moz notes that what you learn applies to other tool sets too.
- A final exam and a LinkedIn badge
- Six parts, about 8 to 10 hours
- Reputation management and measurement covered
- ✓The clearest paid credential in this comparison
- ✓Tasks and quizzes in every part
- ✓A one-time price, no subscription
- ✗Exercises lean on Moz tools
- ✗No live trainer or Q&A session
- ✗Not a third-party accreditation
The pick for someone who wants a paid local SEO certificate with a real exam. If your team doesn't use Moz, expect to translate some exercises to your own tools.
LinkedIn Learning · Learning Local SEO (Sherry Bonelli)
Learning Local SEO is a beginner course by Sherry Bonelli on LinkedIn Learning. It runs 1 h 29 min and shows you how to achieve higher local visibility. It's rated 4.7 out of 5 from 1,375 ratings, and you get a certificate of completion you can add to your LinkedIn profile.
Access is through a LinkedIn Learning subscription, with a one-month free trial. Before you buy anything, ask HR: many companies already license LinkedIn Learning for their staff, which makes this course free for your team. One limit: the course was released in 2021, so check that it reflects the current Google Business Profile interface and AI search features.
- 4.7 out of 5 from 1,375 ratings
- Certificate of completion on LinkedIn
- Often already paid for by the employer
- ✓Short and clear for beginners
- ✓Free trial to try it
- ✓Easy to assign at company scale
- ✗Released in 2021: some screens may be outdated
- ✗Beginner level only
- ✗No live Q&A
The default choice when your company already has LinkedIn Learning: zero extra cost, a certificate, an hour and a half. For anything beyond the basics, pair it with a deeper course.
Coursera · Local Marketing: SEO, Business Networking, And Website Specialization (Alex Genadinik)
This Coursera specialization, taught by Alex Genadinik, is aimed at local business owners who want to grow their local marketing. It bundles 13 courses on SEO, business networking and your website. Coursera estimates about 16 weeks at about 4 hours a week, so roughly four months.
It's rated 4.8 from 17 reviews, a small sample. Access is through Coursera Plus (the annual price varies with promotions; $239 when we compared) or a monthly subscription, and you get a certificate when you complete it. The trade-off is clear: you get breadth, but one instructor's view, and less depth on the technical side of multi-location SEO than a specialist course.
- 13 courses in one specialization
- Local SEO, networking and website together
- Certificate on completion
- ✓The broadest program in this ranking
- ✓Fits a business owner's pace
- ✓Often covered by a Coursera for Business license
- ✗Only 17 reviews
- ✗A single instructor
- ✗Long: four months for skills you may need now
The pick for a business owner who wants to learn local marketing as a whole, not only SEO. If you just need your Google Business Profile fixed, it's far too long.
Semrush Academy · Local SEO Essentials with Semrush
Local SEO Essentials with Semrush is a free course on Semrush Academy, taught by Wes McDowell and Rita Cidre in 16 lessons. You enroll for free and earn a Semrush Academy certificate when you finish.
Keep in mind who made it: Semrush is an SEO tool vendor, and part of the lessons show how to do local SEO with its tools. That doesn't make the content wrong, but if your company doesn't use Semrush, some lessons will be less useful.
- Free, certificate included
- 16 lessons
- Two instructors
- ✓Costs nothing
- ✓A known name on a CV
- ✓A good test before paying
- ✗Partly built around Semrush tools
- ✗Beginner level
- ✗No live support
The best free starting point if you want a certificate. Expect a tool-oriented course, not an independent method.
BrightLocal Academy · A Beginner's Guide to Local SEO
BrightLocal runs a free academy. Its beginner course is taught by Greg Gifford and runs 1.5 hours: 8 modules, 12 videos, 12 quizzes, a workbook and one exam. The academy also offers free courses aimed at agencies.
BrightLocal also sells local SEO tools, so expect references to them. The structure, with quizzes after every video, is better for retention than a plain video series.
- Taught by Greg Gifford
- 12 quizzes and a final exam
- Free agency courses too
- ✓Free
- ✓Quizzes and workbook for each step
- ✓A clear path for agency onboarding
- ✗Beginner level
- ✗Built by a tool vendor
- ✗No live session
A solid free course to train junior agency staff. Pair it with real client work: an exam won't teach you to handle a suspended listing.
Reliablesoft · Complete SEO Course
Reliablesoft's Complete SEO Course bundles six courses and 49 lessons for $67 (listed at $360). Local SEO gets one lesson: Lesson 6 of the 13-lesson Complete SEO Course covers what local SEO is, how to optimize your website for local SEO and a local SEO checklist. We found no Google Business Profile lesson in the listed contents. Pass the final exam and you earn the Reliablesoft SEO Specialist Certification. There's a 60-day money-back guarantee.
One caveat: Reliablesoft also publishes a "best local SEO courses" list that includes its own course. That's not a reason to avoid it, but it is a reason not to treat that list as neutral.
- $67 for six courses
- A checklist for local SEO
- 60-day refund
- ✓Very cheap
- ✓Covers SEO beyond local
- ✓Refund if it isn't for you
- ✗Local SEO is a single lesson, with no Google Business Profile lesson listed
- ✗The certification is the vendor's own
- ✗Not designed for teams
Good value if you need SEO basics with a local checklist on top. If local search is your main job, it's too thin.
Local SEO Academy · The Local SEO Masterclass and Google Business Profile Masterclass
Local SEO Academy is run by Sam Sarsten, who also runs the web design agency Thencan Designs. The Courses plan, at $89 a month or $890 a year, gives access to four courses: the Local SEO Masterclass, which the academy calls "the full A-to-Z training on local SEO, built for designers", a Google Business Profile course, a course on delivering local SEO to clients and a local SEO sales course.
The Courses + Community plan, at $149 a month or $1,490 a year, adds the SOPs, a community, weekly calls and monthly expert trainings. It's sold all year as a subscription, not as dated sessions.
- A full local SEO course plus a Google Business Profile course
- Courses on selling and delivering local SEO to clients
- Monthly or yearly plan, two months free on the yearly price
- ✓A real course library on local SEO, not a single lesson
- ✓Covers the business side: pricing, selling and delivering the service
- ✓Available all year, start any time
- ✗No certificate mentioned
- ✗Aimed at designers and agencies, not at in-house teams
- ✗A recurring cost; the page gives no hour count
A good fit for a web designer who wants to sell local SEO as a service. An in-house marketing team will get more from brightonSEO's live day or Moz's certification.
Which local SEO course for your role, team size and level?
By role
- Small business owner: start free with BrightLocal's 1.5-hour course or Semrush's 16 lessons, then Coursera's specialization if you want a full program.
- In-house marketing manager: brightonSEO's live day for the team ($900 early-bird, $2,100 full price), or the on-demand version at £300 + VAT per person.
- WordPress site manager: Yoast's training, included in the plugin's paid plans.
- Agency or consultant: Moz Academy's Local SEO Certification for a paid credential, BrightLocal's free agency courses for new hires, Local SEO Academy ($89 a month) for a web designer who wants to sell local SEO.
- Multi-location brand: brightonSEO, the only course here with an Apple Business Connect deep dive and a trainer from Uberall.
- Generalist marketer: Reliablesoft's $67 bundle, SEO first with a local checklist.
By team size and level
- The whole company, a shared base: LinkedIn Learning if you already have it, or Semrush Academy for free.
- Two to ten people: compare one brightonSEO live seat per lead with on-demand seats for the rest.
- One person, self-paced: Yoast or Coursera, depending on whether you need a certificate or breadth.
- Beginners: LinkedIn Learning, Semrush, BrightLocal. Advanced: Moz Academy's certification, Local SEO Academy's masterclass for designers who sell local SEO.
- Little time: 1 h 29 min on LinkedIn Learning or 1.5 hours at BrightLocal.
- You want a certificate: Yoast, LinkedIn Learning, Coursera or Semrush; none is a third-party accreditation.
How to choose a local SEO course, and get it paid for
Before comparing curricula, answer three questions: how many people you're training, how many locations you manage, and who pays. A single coffee shop and a 40-location brand don't need the same course. Here's what we noticed while comparing the offers.
Most "best of" lists sell a course
For a team, live options are rare
A certificate proves you finished, not that you can rank a listing
Check whether your employer already pays
Don't forget Apple Maps
Watch out for outdated content
Use the free courses first
Live beats video for a team
Local SEO sits inside SEO
- Count your locations and the people to train before choosing a format.
- Ask HR whether LinkedIn Learning or Coursera is already licensed.
- Check the release or update date of any video course.
- Look for Apple Business Connect and AI search in the curriculum.
- Buy certifications only from the official provider page.
- Plan one hour a week after the course for posts, reviews and tracking.
- Start with a free course to find out what your team is missing.
Local SEO course: your questions answered
What is the best local SEO course?
It depends on who you're training. For a team that wants a live day with an expert, brightonSEO's workshop ($900, Apple Business Connect included). For WordPress sites, Yoast's training, included in its paid plans. For a company that already has LinkedIn Learning, Learning Local SEO. Tip: take a free course first, then pay for what it didn't cover.
How much does a local SEO course cost?
From free (Semrush, BrightLocal) to $900 for one live day at brightonSEO. In between: $67 for Reliablesoft's SEO bundle, $89 a month (or $890 a year) for Local SEO Academy's courses, $118.80 a year for Yoast Premium with the course included, Coursera Plus on promotion at $239 for a year, and $395 for Moz Academy's Local SEO Certification.
Is there a local SEO certification worth getting?
There's no industry-standard local SEO certification. Yoast, brightonSEO (on-demand version), LinkedIn Learning, Coursera, Semrush and Reliablesoft issue their own certificates, which prove you completed a course. Yoast itself says its certificate isn't a formal third-party accreditation. Employers and clients will judge you on listings you've improved, so keep before-and-after screenshots.
Can my employer pay for a local SEO course?
Often, yes. Ask HR first: many companies already license LinkedIn Learning or Coursera, which makes those courses free for you. If not, LinkedIn Learning Teams sells 2 to 20 licenses at $379.88 per license per year, after a one-month free trial. For a paid course or a live workshop, request it from the training budget as employer-sponsored training with a clear business goal, such as more calls and direction requests from your Google Business Profile.
How long does it take to learn local SEO?
A couple of hours for the basics: 1 h 29 min on LinkedIn Learning, 1.5 hours at BrightLocal. A focused day at brightonSEO. Five to seven hours with Yoast if you're new. About four months for Coursera's full program. After that, local SEO is ongoing work: plan an hour a week for posts, reviews and tracking.
Are free local SEO courses good enough?
For a single location, usually yes. Semrush, BrightLocal, Ahrefs Academy and Google Skillshop cover the basics for free. Paid training makes sense when you manage several locations, run an agency or need a live session where your team can ask about its own listings.
Do local SEO courses cover Apple Maps?
Few do. brightonSEO's workshop includes an Apple Business Connect deep dive, and Uberall Academy has free material on it. Most other courses focus only on Google Business Profile, so check the curriculum if a share of your customers use iPhones.
Is a Google Business Profile course the same as a local SEO course?
Not quite. A Google Business Profile course teaches you to set up and manage your listing. A local SEO course also covers citations, reviews, local pages on your site and local links. If you have one location, profile training may be enough; with several, you need the full picture.
