AI Certification: the 10 best programs in 2026

Proctored exams from Google, AWS and Microsoft, university certificates from Wharton, MIT Sloan and Cornell: we compared what each AI certification proves, what it costs and who it is for.

The short answer. If you work on the business side and want a real, proctored AI certification, take Google Cloud Generative AI Leader: $99, no prerequisites, valid for 3 years. If your company wants a recognized school name at a fair price, Wharton's AI for Business costs $850 for 4 to 6 weeks online and comes with a CEU. For a deeper strategy program, MIT Sloan runs 6 weeks for $3,850. If your stack is AWS or Azure, the AWS Certified AI Practitioner ($100) or Microsoft AI-901 ($99) say more to a hiring manager than any course certificate. And if your job touches AI policy or compliance, look at the IAPP AIGP.

“AI certification” covers three very different things. A proctored certification is an exam watched by a third party, with a pass mark and an expiry date (Google, AWS, Microsoft, IAPP). A university certificate proves you completed an executive program, sometimes with CEUs (continuing education units). A certificate of completion from an online course proves you finished the videos. All three belong on a resume. They do not carry the same weight.

We compared the exam pages, curricula, prices and reviews of sixteen programs, and checked every exam that Microsoft has retired. Many top-ranking lists still recommend AI-900 and AI-102: both are gone. This ranking tells you which certification to aim for, depending on your role, and what it costs your team.

AI certification: what each program actually gives you

Before you compare prices, compare what you walk away with. A vendor exam (Google, AWS, Microsoft) is proctored, has a pass mark and an expiry date, and recruiters can check it. The IAPP AIGP is a professional certification with its own maintenance fee. University programs (Wharton, MIT Sloan, Cornell) give a certificate of completion or a digital badge, not an exam, but carry a school name that managers recognize. Course platforms (Coursera, Udacity) issue certificates of completion. Exam prices vary by country: the figures below are US prices.

1
Best AI certification for business roles

Google Cloud · Generative AI Leader certification

4.3/5

Generative AI Leader is the Google Cloud certification built for people who decide, buy and roll out AI, not for engineers. Google states it plainly: no prerequisites, for anyone in any job role, with or without hands-on technical experience. The exam lasts 90 minutes and has 50 to 60 multiple-choice questions. You can take it online with a remote proctor or at a test center.

It costs $99 plus tax where applicable, and it stays valid for 3 years, longer than most vendor credentials. The exam is available in several languages, including English and Spanish; check the current list on Google's page before you book. The limit is the flip side of its strength: it proves you understand generative AI and its business use, not that you can build anything with it.

Standout features
  • $99, no prerequisites
  • Proctored online or onsite
  • Valid for 3 years
  • Written for non-technical roles
+Pros
  • ✓The cheapest proctored certification aimed at business roles
  • ✓A 3-year validity that outlasts most vendor credentials
  • ✓Easy to roll out to a whole team, since nobody needs to code
−Cons
  • ✗Proves understanding, not hands-on skills
  • ✗Most valuable in companies that use Google Cloud or Gemini
  • ✗Google's sample questions are in English only
Verdict

The best first AI credential for a manager or a sales, marketing or operations team. Engineers should look at AWS or Microsoft AI-103 instead.

Best university AI certificate for the price

Wharton Online · AI for Business

4.1/5

Wharton's AI for Business runs 4 to 6 weeks, 100% online and self-paced. Five modules cover big data, the fundamentals of AI and machine learning, machine learning in business, implementing AI strategically, and generative AI. It is a business program: you learn how AI creates value and how to frame projects, not how to code models.

Tuition is $850. Score 70% or more and you get a verified digital badge and one CEU, a continuing education unit you can log in your professional development records. At that price, your team gets the Wharton name on a credential.

Standout features
  • $850 tuition
  • Verified digital badge and 1 CEU
  • Five modules from big data to generative AI
  • Self-paced over 4 to 6 weeks
+Pros
  • ✓A top business school credential at a fraction of executive-program prices
  • ✓The CEU makes it easy to justify on a training budget
  • ✓Self-paced, so it fits around a full-time job
−Cons
  • ✗No proctored exam, so it proves completion, not skill
  • ✗No hands-on building with AI tools
  • ✗Self-paced means no live sessions with faculty
Verdict

The best value among university programs. Pair it with the Google Generative AI Leader exam if you also want a proctored credential.

Best AI strategy program for senior leaders

MIT Sloan School of Management · Artificial Intelligence: Implications for Business Strategy

4.0/5

MIT Sloan's AI program runs 6 weeks, self-paced online, delivered with GetSmarter, which handles enrollment and payment. Plan 6 to 8 hours a week. The program is built for business strategy: it looks at AI from the point of view of the person who has to decide, not the person who codes.

It costs $3,850 and ends with a certificate of completion from the MIT Sloan School of Management. That is more than four times the Wharton price, for a longer, deeper program. For a leader who has to defend an AI budget in front of a board, the MIT name and the depth are worth it. For an individual contributor, it is overkill.

Standout features
  • Certificate of completion from MIT Sloan
  • 6 weeks, 6 to 8 hours a week
  • Strategy and organization focus
  • Delivered with GetSmarter
+Pros
  • ✓The deepest business strategy curriculum in this ranking
  • ✓One of the most recognized names on an executive resume
  • ✓Online, so a leader can follow it without travel
−Cons
  • ✗$3,850 per person, hard to scale to a team
  • ✗No proctored exam
  • ✗Little hands-on practice with AI tools
Verdict

Worth it for the person who owns the AI strategy. For everyone else on the team, Wharton or Google Generative AI Leader cost far less.

4
Best AI certification for AWS teams

AWS · Certified AI Practitioner (AIF-C01)

4.0/5

AWS Certified AI Practitioner is the entry-level AI credential from Amazon Web Services. The exam lasts 90 minutes and has 65 questions. It costs $100, stays valid for 3 years, and is offered in English, Spanish, French, Japanese, Korean and several other languages.

Its value depends on your employer. In a company built on AWS, it is a clear signal that you can talk to the cloud team and choose the right service. Outside that ecosystem, hiring managers give it less weight than a neutral business credential.

Standout features
  • $100, 65 questions
  • Valid for 3 years
  • Exam in English, Spanish, French and more
  • Covers AWS AI services
+Pros
  • ✓Cheap, short and well known among technical recruiters
  • ✓A 3-year validity
  • ✓A natural first step toward deeper AWS certifications
−Cons
  • ✗Most useful in AWS-centric companies
  • ✗Some service-specific questions that a non-AWS user will need to study
  • ✗Proves knowledge, not delivery
Verdict

A must if your company runs on AWS. If it does not, the Google Generative AI Leader exam says the same thing to a wider audience.

5
Best entry-level AI certification for Microsoft shops

Microsoft · AI-901 Azure AI Fundamentals

4.0/5

AI-901 replaced AI-900, which Microsoft retired. If a course still prepares you for AI-900, it is out of date. The exam has two domains: identifying AI concepts and capabilities (40 to 45%), and implementing AI solutions with Microsoft Foundry (55 to 60%). You need a score of 700 to pass, and Microsoft expects knowledge of Python coding syntax.

It costs $99 in the US; the price depends on the country where you take it. Microsoft Learn's learning paths are free, and the official instructor-led course is AI-901T00, Introduction to AI in Azure. If you fail, you can retake the exam 24 hours after the first attempt. Register with a personal Microsoft account: Microsoft warns that your exam records are lost if you leave the organization that owns your work account.

Standout features
  • $99, replaces the retired AI-900
  • Free self-study on Microsoft Learn
  • Pass mark 700
  • Retake after 24 hours
+Pros
  • ✓Cheap and fully self-studyable
  • ✓Recognized wherever Microsoft is the standard
  • ✓A clear path to AI-103 for developers
−Cons
  • ✗Python basics expected, so not for non-technical managers
  • ✗Tied to the Azure ecosystem
  • ✗A fundamentals credential, not proof of delivery
Verdict

A solid, cheap first credential for a technical profile in a Microsoft company. Business roles get more from Google Generative AI Leader.

6
Best AI certification for governance, risk and compliance

IAPP · Artificial Intelligence Governance Professional (AIGP)

3.8/5

The AIGP is the IAPP's certification for people who govern AI rather than build it: privacy officers, lawyers, risk managers, compliance teams. The exam costs $649 for IAPP members and $799 for non-members. The exam lasts 2.75 hours and has 100 questions. Once certified, you keep the credential by paying a maintenance fee of $250 per certification term, or through an IAPP membership at $295 a year.

It is a niche credential, and that is its value. Practitioners describe it as useful if your work touches AI policy, compliance, risk management or privacy, and much less so otherwise. Governance leaders also note that experience still matters more than the certificate. Read the candidate handbook on iapp.org before you book the exam.

Standout features
  • The reference credential for AI governance
  • $649 for members, $799 for non-members
  • A professional body behind it, not a vendor
  • Built for legal, privacy and risk roles
+Pros
  • ✓Fills a gap no vendor exam covers: policy, risk and compliance
  • ✓Recognized by privacy and compliance teams
  • ✓Useful for teams preparing for AI regulation
−Cons
  • ✗Ongoing maintenance cost after the exam
  • ✗Little value outside governance roles
  • ✗Experience still weighs more than the certificate
Verdict

The right certification for the person who writes your AI policy. Everyone else can skip it.

7
Best university AI certificate with a choice of tracks

eCornell · Artificial Intelligence certificate programs

3.8/5

eCornell offers several AI certificate programs rather than a single course: AI for Digital Transformation, AI Strategy, Designing and Building AI Solutions, Generative AI for Productivity (taught live online) and Marketing AI, among others. Each runs 2 to 3 months, with 3 to 8 hours of study a week, all online.

Prices range from $3,699 to $3,900. That is close to the MIT Sloan price, for a longer program and a choice of focus. The live format of the productivity track is rare among university programs. The certificate comes from Cornell University, which carries weight with HR teams, though it is a certificate of completion, not a proctored exam.

Standout features
  • Several tracks: strategy, building, marketing, productivity
  • 2 to 3 months, 3 to 8 hours a week
  • A Cornell University certificate
  • One track taught live online
+Pros
  • ✓The widest choice of AI tracks in this ranking
  • ✓A rhythm that fits a full-time job
  • ✓Lets each team member pick a track that matches the role
−Cons
  • ✗Close to $3,700 or more per person
  • ✗Certificate of completion, no proctored exam
  • ✗Some tracks fall outside business AI
Verdict

Good when you know the exact track you need. For a general introduction, Wharton does the job for a quarter of the price.

Best executive AI program from a UK business school

Oxford Saïd Business School · Oxford Artificial Intelligence Programme (with GetSmarter)

3.7/5

The Oxford Artificial Intelligence Programme is an online executive program from Oxford Saïd Business School, delivered with the education company GetSmarter. It runs for 6 weeks, plus an orientation, at 7 to 10 hours a week, with videos, notes, assignments and quizzes. It costs $3,285, payable in two interest-free installments.

Be clear about what you get: a digital certificate of attendance from Oxford Saïd, issued in your legal name once you meet the handbook requirements. It is not a proctored exam. Its value is the school name and a strategic view of AI for a leadership team, at a price close to MIT Sloan.

Standout features
  • Certificate of attendance from Oxford Saïd
  • 6 weeks, 7 to 10 hours a week
  • $3,285, payable in two installments
  • No coding required
+Pros
  • ✓A top business school name for a leadership profile
  • ✓A short, fixed format that fits a busy schedule
  • ✓Payment plan with no interest
−Cons
  • ✗Certificate of attendance, not a proctored certification
  • ✗Expensive next to a $99 vendor exam
  • ✗Strategy content, little hands-on building
Verdict

A strong choice for an executive who needs the strategic picture and a school name. A practitioner should pick a proctored exam instead.

Best AI certification for developers building agents

Microsoft · AI-103 Azure AI Apps and Agents Developer Associate

3.7/5

AI-103 replaced AI-102 and the Azure AI Engineer Associate credential, both retired by Microsoft. It certifies developers who build AI apps and agents with Microsoft Foundry, and it expects experience developing apps with Python. You have 120 minutes to complete it.

It costs $165 in the US. As an associate-level credential, it lasts 12 months and renews for free online. It is offered in ten languages, including English, French, German, Spanish, Japanese and Portuguese (Brazil). This is the only certification in this ranking that proves you can build, not just understand.

Standout features
  • Replaces the retired AI-102
  • Focus on apps and agents with Microsoft Foundry
  • Free annual renewal
  • Ten exam languages
+Pros
  • ✓The strongest technical signal in this ranking
  • ✓Free renewal keeps it current
  • ✓Directly tied to agent development
−Cons
  • ✗Python development experience required
  • ✗Not meant for business roles
  • ✗Yearly renewal to keep it active
Verdict

The certification to aim for if you build AI agents on Azure. Start with AI-901 if you are new to the platform.

Best hands-on AI programming certificate

Udacity · AI Programming with Python Nanodegree

3.4/5

Udacity's AI Programming with Python Nanodegree takes about 52 hours. It teaches programming for AI in Python. It is rated 4.7 out of 5 on 664 reviews. The certificate comes with a Udacity subscription, whose price is shown at checkout, not on the program page.

It is a programming course, not an exam. Its value lies in what you can build afterwards, rather than in the certificate itself. For a team that needs to move from using AI tools to scripting with them, it is a practical bridge.

Standout features
  • About 52 hours of content
  • 4.7 on 664 reviews
  • Included in a Udacity subscription
+Pros
  • ✓Real code, not just videos
  • ✓A good bridge toward AI-901 and AI-103
  • ✓Self-paced
−Cons
  • ✗Certificate of completion, no proctored exam
  • ✗Price not shown on the program page
  • ✗Assumes you are ready to learn to code
Verdict

A useful skill-builder for someone moving into technical AI work. Its certificate alone will not open many doors.

The method

Getting an AI certification, step by step

From choosing the right credential to adding it to your profile, here is the order we recommend to a professional or a team lead, with the free resources that are often enough and the point where a paid program starts to pay off.

01

Pick the certification that matches your role

First

Start with one question: who needs to be convinced? A hiring manager in a cloud company wants AWS or Microsoft. A leadership team wants Google Generative AI Leader or a school name such as Wharton or MIT Sloan. A legal or compliance team wants the IAPP AIGP. A developer needs AI-103. Do not pick the most famous name; pick the one your next reader recognizes.

02

Check that the exam still exists

5 minutes

Open the official exam page before you buy any prep course. Microsoft retired AI-900 and AI-102 and replaced them with AI-901 and AI-103. Many articles and courses still sell the old ones. Look at the language list too: Google Generative AI Leader is available in several languages, including English and Spanish, AWS AI Practitioner in English, Spanish, French and several other languages.

Use the free material first

1 to 2 weeks

Microsoft publishes free learning paths on Microsoft Learn, and they alone are enough for many AI-901 candidates with a technical background. Google AI Essentials can often be finished within its 7-day free trial. Our list of free AI courses sorts the best ones. Two weeks of free study tell you whether you need a paid program at all.

Get your employer to pay

Before you enroll

Most employers have a training or tuition assistance budget, and AI skills are an easy case to make. Bring the exact cost (a $99 exam, an $850 program), the time needed, and what your team gets out of it. Programs that award CEUs, such as Wharton's, fit neatly into professional development records. For a team, ask about group pricing: a whole team on the Google exam costs less than one seat at MIT Sloan.

1 week to 3 months

Bring a real problem from your job to the program: a report to automate, a process to redesign, an AI tool to evaluate. University programs make you work on cases; vendor exams ask scenario questions. In both, having a concrete case in mind makes the material stick. On a self-paced program, block fixed slots in your calendar from day one.

Right after

Book your exam before you finish studying, so the date keeps you moving. Most vendor exams can be taken online with a remote proctor. Use a personal account, not your work account: Microsoft warns that exam records are lost if you leave the organization. If you fail AI-901, you can retake it 24 hours later.

Then plan the next level: AI-901 leads to AI-103 for developers, Google Generative AI Leader pairs well with a university program for managers. And if your role touches data, a Power BI certification is a natural complement.

Buyer's guide

Spotting an AI certification that actually counts

“Certified” can mean a proctored exam recognized worldwide or a badge you get for watching videos. Six checks are enough to know which one you are buying.

Certification or certificate of completion?

Ask who grades you and how. A certification is a proctored exam with a pass mark: Google, AWS, Microsoft, IAPP. A certificate of completion comes from the course provider and proves you finished. University programs sit in between: graded work, a school name, sometimes CEUs, but no independent exam.

Is the exam still live?

Vendor exams change. Microsoft retired AI-900 and AI-102 and replaced them with AI-901 and AI-103. Many top-ranking lists still recommend the retired ones. Always open the official exam page before you pay for preparation.

Total cost, not sticker price

Add the exam fee, preparation and maintenance. The Google and AWS exams cost $99 and $100 and last 3 years. A Microsoft associate credential costs $165 and renews yearly for free. The IAPP AIGP costs $649 or $799, plus a maintenance fee of $250 per term. University programs cost $850 to $3,900, with no exam fee on top.

Validity and renewal

Google Generative AI Leader and AWS AI Practitioner are valid for 3 years. Microsoft associate credentials such as AI-103 last 12 months, then renew for free online. University certificates do not expire, but they do not prove you are current either.

Prerequisites that are not on the sales page

Google Generative AI Leader has none. Microsoft AI-901 expects Python syntax, and AI-103 expects Python app development experience. Read the skills outline before you commit a non-technical team to a technical exam.

Recognition in your market

A credential is worth what your next reader thinks of it. AWS counts in AWS companies, Microsoft in Microsoft shops. Wharton, MIT Sloan and Cornell open doors with leadership teams. The IAPP AIGP is the reference in governance. Match the credential to the audience, not to the ads.
  • Open the official exam page and confirm the exam is still live
  • Check whether you get a proctored certification or a certificate of completion
  • Add exam fee, preparation and maintenance to get the real cost
  • Note the validity period and how renewal works
  • Read the prerequisites, especially Python for Microsoft exams
  • Ask your employer about tuition assistance and CEU credit
  • Register for vendor exams with a personal account
FAQ · 10 questions

AI certification · FAQ

  • Which AI certification is best for beginners?

For a non-technical beginner, Google Cloud Generative AI Leader: $99, no prerequisites, a 90-minute proctored exam valid for 3 years. For a technical beginner in a Microsoft company, AI-901 at $99. If you only want a first taste, Google AI Essentials takes under 5 hours, but it is a certificate of completion, not a certification.

  • Is the Google AI Essentials certificate worth it?

As a starting point, yes. It takes under 5 hours, has a 4.8 rating on 26,102 reviews, and teaches practical prompting and responsible use. As a credential, it carries little weight: it is a certificate of completion. Learners themselves note that finishing it and shipping an AI system are very different things. Take it, then move on to a proctored exam.

  • Is the Google AI certificate free?

Not entirely. Google AI Essentials costs $49 a month on Coursera after a 7-day free trial in the US and Canada, and other countries may pay less. Since the course takes under 5 hours, many people finish it within the trial. The Google Cloud Generative AI Leader exam costs $99 plus tax.

  • How much does an AI certification cost?

From $99 to almost $4,000. Proctored vendor exams cost $99 (Google Generative AI Leader, Microsoft AI-901 in the US), $100 (AWS AI Practitioner) or $165 (Microsoft AI-103). University programs cost $850 (Wharton), $3,699 to $3,900 (eCornell) or $3,850 (MIT Sloan). The IAPP AIGP exam costs $649 for members and $799 for others, plus $250 per term of maintenance.

  • How long does it take to get AI certified?

From one week to three months. A vendor exam such as AI-901 or Google Generative AI Leader takes one to two weeks of study for most professionals, plus a 90 to 120-minute exam. Wharton's program runs 4 to 6 weeks, MIT Sloan's 6 weeks at 6 to 8 hours a week, and eCornell's 2 to 3 months.

  • Do I need to code to get an AI certification?

Not for most of them. Google Generative AI Leader, AWS AI Practitioner, the IAPP AIGP and the university programs require no coding. Microsoft AI-901 expects basic Python syntax, and AI-103 expects experience developing apps with Python.

  • What replaced AI-900 and AI-102?

Microsoft retired AI-900 and replaced it with AI-901, Azure AI Fundamentals. It also retired AI-102 and the Azure AI Engineer Associate credential, replaced by AI-103, Azure AI Apps and Agents Developer Associate. If a course or article still recommends AI-900 or AI-102, it is out of date.

  • Will my employer pay for an AI certification?

Often, yes. Many employers have a tuition assistance or training budget, and a $99 exam is an easy request. Programs that award CEUs, such as Wharton's AI for Business, fit into professional development records. For a team, compare the cost per person: certifying ten people on the Google exam costs less than one MIT Sloan seat.

  • Are AI certifications worth it?

A proctored certification is worth it when it matches your role and your company's tools: AWS in an AWS company, AIGP in a compliance team. It shows a baseline, not real-world delivery. Governance leaders say experience still weighs more than the certificate. Use a certification to open the conversation, and a project to win it.

  • Can my employer pay for an AI certification tax-free?

Often, yes. In the US, an employer's educational assistance program can cover up to $5,250 per employee per calendar year without tax for the employee, according to the IRS. That covers an exam fee and most course fees in this ranking, except the longer university programs. Ask HR whether your company runs such a program before you pay yourself.
