What is the best load board in 2026?

Five load boards compared on load volume, real monthly cost and how well they protect you from bad brokers.

Short answer: DAT One is the board to beat. It has the biggest spot market and lane rate data, and Pro at $169 a month is the plan most 1 to 3 truck operations need. Truckstop is the best second board, from $42 a month, with broker ratings on Advanced. On a tight budget, 123Loadboard gives you a full-featured board from $39. Direct Freight has the only real free-forever plan, and Trucker Path is the cheapest app-first option at $29.99.

A load board is an online marketplace where brokers and shippers post freight and carriers post open trucks, so you can fill empty miles and find backhauls. We compared the five boards from their official pricing pages and plan grids, then read carrier reviews, starting with the negative ones.

How we compared

How we compared and scored

We started from a carrier's question: where will I find a paying load, at what monthly cost, and will I get paid? For each board we read the official pricing page and plan grid, then carrier reviews and forums, starting with the negative ones.

The weights are not equal on purpose. Load volume counts most, because an empty board is useless. Safety and vetting comes next, because one double-brokered load can cost more than a year of subscription. Price matters, but a $30 difference a month is one decent backhaul.

Most loads and the best rate data

DAT One

4.0/5

DAT One is the load board most US carriers start with, and the one most comparisons put first for freight volume. What you really pay for is its rate data: every tier shows lane averages, and the higher ones show the best available rates and the Market Conditions tool.

The ladder is steep, so read it carefully. Standard costs $59 a month but caps you at 500 load searches a month and shows 15-day average rates. Enhanced ($149) adds TriHaul (multi-leg trip planning) and DAT Assurance with up to $250 of credit. Pro, at $169, is the plan DAT labels most popular for 1 to 3 trucks: 10 search tabs and the best available rates. Select ($259) is aimed at fleets of 3+ trucks, and Office ($339) at 10+.

The math for one truck: Pro at $169 is about $5.60 a day. One extra backhaul at a better rate usually covers the month. The catch is that Standard's 500-search cap runs out fast if you refresh all day.

Standout features
  • Largest pool of spot loads among these five
  • Lane rate averages on every tier
  • TriHaul multi-leg trip planning from Enhanced
  • DAT Assurance credit from $250 to $1,000 depending on plan
+Pros
  • ✓Freight volume most carriers rely on
  • ✓Rate data that helps you negotiate
  • ✓Clear tiers by fleet size
−Cons
  • ✗Standard caps you at 500 searches a month
  • ✗Pro and above cost $169+ a month
  • ✗Brokers and double-brokers use it too: vet every new partner
Verdict

If you can only afford one paid board, make it DAT One Pro. Skip Standard unless you search rarely.

Best for vetting brokers before you haul

Truckstop

4.0/5

Truckstop is DAT's main rival, and many carriers run both. Carrier Basic costs $42 a month per user, up to 3 users, with unlimited load search, truck and lane posting, private loads from approved brokers and backhaul search. Truckstop TMS is included free.

The value sits in Advanced ($135): broker ratings, faster load booking, fuel and routing tools and the AVA Carrier Assistant. Pro ($159) adds rate insights, live loads, lane planning and load comparison. There are also equipment-specific plans: Dry Van Basic at $35 and Reefer Basic at $42, priced per 3-user block.

One thing to plan for: a non-refundable application fee of $42 ($35 for dry van). If you are approved, it is credited to your first month.

Standout features
  • Broker ratings from the Advanced plan
  • Free Truckstop TMS on every carrier plan
  • Dry van and reefer plans that search only your equipment
  • Heavy Haul Pro with permit and escort quotes ($299)
+Pros
  • ✓Cheapest serious entry at $42
  • ✓Up to 3 users on Basic
  • ✓Strong broker vetting tools
−Cons
  • ✗Non-refundable application fee
  • ✗Rate insights only on Pro
  • ✗Fewer loads than DAT on many lanes
Verdict

A strong first or second board. Take Advanced if you deal with many new brokers: the ratings pay for themselves the first time they steer you away from a slow payer.

Best value for new owner-operators

123Loadboard

3.9/5

123Loadboard is the budget pick with real depth. Plans run $39, $59 and $79 a month, each with a 5-day free trial, and the published prices apply to fleets of up to 10 trucks. Unlimited load searching and truck posting are part of the offer.

For the money, the tool list is long: load alerts, a profit calculator, credit scores and days-to-pay, a load density map, PC*Miler routing and tolls, an IFTA mileage calculator and rate checks on lanes. Some features are reserved for the higher tiers, so check the plan grid before you pick.

Its load volume is lower than DAT or Truckstop. Many owner-operators use it as their second board, or as their only board during the first months of a new authority.

Standout features
  • Prices from $39 a month
  • 5-day free trial on every plan
  • PC*Miler routing, tolls and IFTA mileage
  • Credit scores and days-to-pay on brokers
+Pros
  • ✓Lowest price for a full-featured board
  • ✓Highly rated mobile app
  • ✓Good broker credit data
−Cons
  • ✗Smaller load pool than DAT
  • ✗Pricing only shown for fleets up to 10 trucks
  • ✗Some tools reserved for top tiers
Verdict

The best value board for a new authority. Add DAT once you know your lanes.

Best free plan

Direct Freight

3.6/5

Direct Freight is the only board here with a real free-forever plan. It gives you 3 load searches a day, truck posting, matching load alerts, the mobile app and mileage and maps. Credit scores, rates and heat maps are not included.

Paid plans are Basic at $39 a month, Enhanced at $49 (adds credit scores, days to pay, full credit reports, heat maps and the profit calculator) and Professional at $69 (adds current and historical freight rates, tolls and multi-user management). Pay yearly and you get two months free: $390, $490 or $690 a year. Each paid plan starts with a 7-day trial.

Its own load pool is smaller, but its search also pulls loads from 123Loadboard, which widens what you see.

Standout features
  • Free plan with no time limit
  • Enhanced at $49 with full credit reports
  • Yearly billing gives 2 months free
  • Search includes 123Loadboard loads
+Pros
  • ✓Free plan to start
  • ✓Credit reports at a low price
  • ✓Simple pricing
−Cons
  • ✗Free plan limited to 3 searches a day
  • ✗Smaller own load pool
  • ✗Rate data only on the top plan
Verdict

Start here if you are not sure a load board pays for itself. Upgrade to Enhanced before you haul for unknown brokers.

Best mobile-first board

Trucker Path

3.5/5

Trucker Path started as the app drivers use for truck stops, parking and fuel prices, and its load board lives inside the same ecosystem. The app is free to download and rated 4.5 on the App Store from about 2,800 ratings.

The load board memberships are Essential at $29.99 a month or $299.99 a year and Preferred at $49.99 a month or $499.99 a year, according to the official App Store description. The store also lists other in-app prices, so confirm the tier you see before you pay.

It works best as a second board for the road. Its load volume and broker data do not match DAT or Truckstop.

Standout features
  • Load board inside an app many drivers already use
  • Monthly or yearly memberships
  • Parking and fuel information in the same app
  • Free to download
+Pros
  • ✓Cheapest paid tier in this list
  • ✓Built for searching from a phone
  • ✓Annual plan lowers the monthly cost
−Cons
  • ✗Smaller load pool
  • ✗Less broker vetting data
  • ✗Several in-app price points can confuse
Verdict

A handy second board for drivers who live in the app. Do not make it your only source of loads.

Real cost

What a load board really costs you

The sticker price is one line. Search caps, users and fees change the real number.

Search caps

DAT Standard at $59 allows 500 load searches a month, about 16 a day. If you refresh constantly, Pro at $169 is the real price.

Users

Truckstop Carrier Basic covers up to 3 users per subscription. That makes it cheaper than it looks for a small office with a dispatcher.

Fees

Truckstop charges a $42 non-refundable application fee, credited to month one if approved. Read the fine print for taxes and add-ons on every board.

Yearly billing

Direct Freight gives two months free on yearly plans ($390 for Basic). Trucker Path Essential costs $299.99 a year against $29.99 a month.

  • Does the board have density on your lanes and equipment?
  • Is there a search cap on your plan?
  • Do you get broker credit scores and days to pay?
  • How many users does one subscription cover?
  • Is there a trial or free plan to check first?
  • What is the cancellation process?
The traps

Six traps that cost more than the subscription

Load boards rarely fail on search. They fail on a broker who never pays, a fake load or a plan that does not fit.

01

Hauling a double-brokered load

Most damaging

A fake or unauthorized broker takes a load, reposts it at a lower rate, and disappears with the payment. You haul and never get paid.

The fix: check the MC number on FMCSA and call the broker on the number from its official website.

Red flag
Rate well above lane average
02

Skipping credit checks to save $50

Most expensive

Basic tiers often leave out credit scores and days to pay. One 90-day payer can break a small carrier's cash flow.

The fix: take a plan with credit data, such as Direct Freight Enhanced at $49 or Truckstop Advanced.

03

Hitting a search cap mid-month

Most common

DAT Standard stops at 500 searches a month. Heavy users hit it in two weeks.

The fix: use saved searches and alerts instead of refreshing, or move to Pro.

04

Accepting a rate without lane data

Most frequent

Without lane averages, you accept the first offer. DAT shows averages on every tier and Truckstop Pro adds rate insights.

The fix: compare every offer to the lane average before you call.

05

Forgetting application fees and taxes

Small but real

Truckstop's $42 application fee is non-refundable if you are not approved, and its prices exclude fees and taxes.

The fix: read the checkout page before you enter a card.

06

Relying on one board forever

Long term

Boards are spot markets. Rates swing with the market, and a board-only business swings with them.

The fix: use the board to find shippers and brokers you can then work with directly.

FAQ · 7 questions

Load board FAQ

  • What is the best load board for owner-operators?

DAT One Pro for most owner-operators: the most spot loads and real lane rates for $169 a month. If you are starting out on a tight budget, 123Loadboard at $39 or $59 a month is the best value, and many carriers add Truckstop as a second board.

  • Is there a free load board?

Yes. Direct Freight has a free-forever plan with 3 searches a day, and the Trucker Path app is free to download. Free plans leave out credit scores and rate data, which are the tools that protect you from bad brokers.

  • How much does a load board cost?

From $29.99 a month for Trucker Path Essential to $339 for DAT Office. The realistic range for one truck is $39 to $169: 123Loadboard Standard, Truckstop Carrier Basic at $42 or DAT One Pro at $169.

  • DAT or Truckstop: which one should I pick?

DAT if you want the biggest load pool and rate data to negotiate. Truckstop if you want broker ratings and a lower entry price ($42 against $59). Carriers who can afford both often run DAT for loads and Truckstop for vetting.

  • How do I avoid fraud and double brokering on load boards?

Check every new broker's MC number and authority on FMCSA, look at their credit score and days to pay, and call the number on their official website, not the one in the post. Be wary of rates far above the lane average and of any change of payment details by email.

  • Are load boards worth it for a new authority?

Yes, because most new authorities have no direct shippers yet. Start with a budget board like 123Loadboard, use credit data on every broker, and plan to add direct customers so the board becomes your backup, not your whole business.

  • Can I use load boards with a cargo van or hotshot?

Yes. Direct Freight and 123Loadboard are popular with hotshot and smaller equipment, and Truckstop has equipment-specific plans. Check that your equipment type is a search filter before you pay.
