What's the best product recommendation software in 2026?

The one that runs on your platform, publishes a price you can read, and lets you measure the real lift. A "you may also like" carousel nobody scrolls earns nothing, even when it's free.

A product recommendation engine picks which products each shopper sees: "frequently bought together" on the product page, add-ons in the cart, a personalized row in your win-back email. The goal is a bigger average order without you curating every block by hand.

The short answer: Clerk.io is the best pick for most stores, because it plugs into 13 ecommerce platforms (WooCommerce and PrestaShop included) and merchants rate its support highly, but you'll need a quote. Doofinder gives you search and recommendations from $49 a month with no sales call. On Shopify, LimeSpot starts free and Rebuy owns cart upsells. Algolia Recommend bills per request, Recombee suits teams with a developer, and Nosto and Bloomreach are built for brands with serious traffic.

Before you pay for anything, switch on what your platform gives you for free (Shopify Search & Discovery, WooCommerce cross-sells). That's your baseline: without it, you can't tell whether a paid engine earns more than it costs.

How we ranked

How we compared and scored

The top results for this search are mostly vendor blogs ranking their own product first, or lists of nine or ten tools with no prices for the big names. None of them tells you what Nosto or Dynamic Yield costs, which engines run outside Shopify, or how to check whether the revenue a dashboard credits to recommendations would have happened anyway.

We read each vendor's official pricing page, its billing terms and its marketplace listings (the Shopify App Store in particular), then merchant feedback: one-star reviews, Shopify Community threads and ecommerce forums. The core criterion: a tool that shows product recommendations on an online store, whose vendor either publishes a price or clearly states it's quote-based, and whose supported platforms we could confirm. Tools that fail that filter, or whose current offer we couldn't confirm, aren't ranked.

The five criteria carry equal weight: it's the grid every one of our review pages uses, so a tool keeps the same score across the site. When scores are close, two things break the tie: a price you can read without a sales call, and how many ecommerce platforms the tool supports.

1
Best product recommendation software for most stores

Clerk.io

4.3/5

Clerk.io is a Danish vendor that sells its platform as modules: Search, Recommendations, Chat, Email and Audience (customer segmentation). You buy only what you need. Its first strength is reach: 13 platforms have a ready-made integration, including Shopify, WooCommerce, Magento and Magento 2, BigCommerce, Shopware, Lightspeed, VTEX and PrestaShop, plus an open API for custom builds. If you run more than one storefront, or you're not on Shopify, that list matters more than any feature.

There's no public price. The pricing page walks you through a calculator that ends in "contact us for a quote". What is public: Recommendations are sold in monthly tiers from 100,000 to 10,000,000 API calls, users are unlimited, and setup costs nothing. Extra work, like a custom tweak, is billed at €99 an hour. You can commit monthly, quarterly, every six months or yearly, with a discount for longer terms, and pay in USD, EUR, GBP or DKK.

Read the overage clause before you sign. If your three-month average goes over your tier, Clerk.io moves you up a tier or bills the surplus the next month. A store that doubles its traffic over Black Friday needs to plan for that. Merchant feedback is strongest on support: fast answers, migrations handled for you. The friction shows up on custom-built stores, where product attributes need manual mapping, and one reviewer says they were billed after cancelling. Get the term and notice period in writing.

Standout features
  • 13 ready-made ecommerce integrations
  • Search, recommendations and email from one vendor
  • Unlimited users, no setup fee
+Pros
  • ✓Support merchants rate highly
  • ✓Modular: you only pay for what you use
  • ✓Month-to-month commitment available
−Cons
  • ✗No public price, quote required
  • ✗Tier upgrade if your 3-month average runs over
  • ✗Manual attribute mapping on custom stores
Verdict

The safest pick if you're not on Shopify, or you want one tool for search and recommendations. Ask for a quote based on your peak season volume, not your average month.

2
Best value with search included

Doofinder

4.2/5

Doofinder is a Madrid-based vendor best known for site search. Recommendations and product quizzes (a short questionnaire that guides shoppers to the right item) come with every plan, with no add-on to buy. It's the only engine in this ranking that pairs a low published entry price with integrations for all the major platforms: Shopify and BigCommerce (with dedicated plans), WooCommerce, PrestaShop and Adobe Commerce.

The pricing is easy to read: Basic at $49 a month for 10,000 requests, Pro at $149 for 150,000, Advanced at $349 for 400,000, and Enterprise on quote. Paying yearly saves 10% ($44, $134 and $314 a month), but annual payments are non-refundable, so start monthly until you know your real request volume. The free trial needs no card.

The trade-off comes from its roots. Doofinder is a search engine first, and its recommendations are simpler than what a specialist like Nosto or Rebuy offers. If your main goal is helping shoppers find the right product and see sensible suggestions next to it, that's often enough, at a fraction of the price.

Standout features
  • Search, recommendations and quizzes in every plan
  • Shopify, BigCommerce, WooCommerce, PrestaShop, Adobe Commerce
  • Public pricing from $49 a month
+Pros
  • ✓Trial with no credit card
  • ✓Simple grid, no quote needed up to Advanced
  • ✓Strong outside Shopify too
−Cons
  • ✗Recommendations less advanced than a specialist's
  • ✗Annual payment non-refundable
  • ✗Request allowance to watch during sales
Verdict

The best starting point if your on-site search is weak and you want recommendations without negotiating. Start on monthly Basic and check your request counter before switching to yearly.

3
Best for a small Shopify store

LimeSpot

4.2/5

LimeSpot is a Shopify app, and only a Shopify app. It adds personalized recommendations and bundles to your store with no code. Its App Store listing shows 4.6 out of 5 across more than 500 reviews, which makes it one of the most widely used recommendation apps among small stores.

Its pricing grows with you, which is both the appeal and the catch. Free costs nothing up to 10 orders a month. Turbo starts at $9.99 a month and rises with your orders ($19.99 up to 250). Max starts at $50 a month and adds segmentation, A/B/n testing (comparing several versions of a block), email, SMS and 70+ integrations, but its price scales with your whole store's revenue: $150 a month up to $50K. Also note that Free and Turbo aren't compatible with Shopify Plus.

The one-star reviews tell one story: bills above $500 a month on Max, calculated on the entire store's sales rather than the sales the app actually drove. Other merchants report slower pages, questionable revenue attribution, and recommendations pointing at a press page. On Free or Turbo, the value is excellent. Beyond that, run the numbers.

Standout features
  • Free plan up to 10 orders a month
  • Bundles and "frequently bought together" out of the box
  • A/B/n testing and email on Max
+Pros
  • ✓Starts at $0, then $9.99 a month
  • ✓Quick setup on a Shopify theme
  • ✓Widely used by small stores
−Cons
  • ✗Shopify only
  • ✗Max priced on your whole store's revenue
  • ✗Free and Turbo don't support Shopify Plus
Verdict

The best entry point for a new Shopify store. Stay on Turbo as long as you can, and before moving to Max, work out what 1% of your revenue looks like.

Best for pay-as-you-go pricing

Algolia Recommend

4.1/5

Algolia is a hosted search engine, popular with stores that have developers. Recommend is its recommendations module: "frequently bought together", cart upsells, A/B testing. The draw is usage pricing. The Free plan includes 5,000 Recommend requests a month. Grow has no base fee: 10,000 Recommend requests are included, then you pay $0.60 per 1,000.

One detail changes the maths: Algolia bills every recommendation request, not every HTTP call, so batching requests into a single call doesn't lower your bill. What counts is how many blocks you render. A product page with three carousels uses three requests every time it loads. At 100,000 Recommend requests a month on Grow, the bill comes to $54 (90,000 requests over the allowance at $0.60 per 1,000).

The limits are clear. On Shopify, the official "AI Search & Discovery" app holds 3.7 out of 5, with 13 one-star reviews out of 45, so the integration needs care. On PrestaShop, there's no official module, only third-party ones. Outside the Shopify app, integration runs through the API, so plan for a developer.

Standout features
  • Per-request pricing, no base fee on Grow
  • 5,000 free recommendation requests a month
  • Same platform as Algolia search
+Pros
  • ✓Cost tracks traffic closely
  • ✓Nothing to pay for a prototype
  • ✓A/B testing and cart upsells in the Shopify app
−Cons
  • ✗No official PrestaShop module
  • ✗Shopify app rated 3.7 out of 5
  • ✗API integration outside Shopify
Verdict

The right pick if you already run Algolia or have a developer on hand. Count carousels per page before adding more: block count, not visitor count, drives the bill.

5
Best personalization suite for established brands

Nosto

4.1/5

Nosto is a commerce personalization suite. On Shopify, its app covers search, recommendations, merchandising (the order products appear in collections), cart upsells, bundles, "frequently bought together" blocks, plus content and customer photos. The listing holds 4.7 out of 5. Along with Rebuy and Bloomreach, it has the deepest feature set in this ranking.

Pricing is custom, and Nosto says so plainly: no fixed tiers, a platform fee plus a fixed fee based on your GMV and traffic, then modules à la carte. AI is included in every module. The sales path is a 30-minute demo with an ROI estimate and a pricing proposal. There's no self-serve trial; qualified merchants can run a proof of concept by installing the app and previewing results on their own store data.

For a large store, one point reassures: the "Product Scalability" pack comes with a 99.99% uptime SLA. For a small one, the hurdle is obvious: the app is free to install, but you need a paid Nosto account, and you only learn the price after the demo. Bring your monthly traffic, revenue and expected lift to that call.

Standout features
  • Search, recommendations, merchandising and content in one suite
  • Proof of concept on your own data
  • 99.99% uptime SLA available
+Pros
  • ✓One of the richest feature sets on the market
  • ✓Highly rated Shopify app
  • ✓Demo includes an ROI estimate
−Cons
  • ✗Price only after a demo
  • ✗No self-serve trial
  • ✗Oversized for a small store
Verdict

The right pick for an established brand that wants one suite to personalize everything. Go into the demo with your monthly revenue and ask how they measure true incremental lift.

6
Best cart upsell engine for Shopify

Rebuy

4.1/5

Rebuy is a Shopify personalization engine built around the cart. It surfaces add-ons in the slide-out cart, at checkout and on the thank-you page, using your catalog, cart contents and customer history. Its features score 4.7 in our AfterSell alternatives ranking, tied with Nosto for the highest on this page.

Pricing is finally readable. Rebuy sells four packages à la carte (Cart & Merchandising, Checkout & Post-Purchase, Search & Collections, Flows & A/B Testing), each from $25 a month, based on order volume from 250 to 50,000 a month. Bundling 2, 3 or 4 packages saves 10%, 20% or 30%, and paying yearly takes another 10% off. The Monetize plan is free: Rebuy shows partner offers after checkout and pays you $0.20 to $0.35 per transaction. Platform One, the full suite, is on quote.

The catch: value for money (3.2) drops fast as packages and orders stack up, and Premium Support costs $499 a month. Rebuy is also built for Shopify; on WooCommerce or PrestaShop, look at Clerk.io or Doofinder. The 14-day trial plus a money-back guarantee gives you time to measure lift over a real order cycle.

Standout features
  • Suggestions in cart, at checkout and post-purchase
  • À la carte packages from $25 a month
  • Monetize plan that pays you
+Pros
  • ✓Very deep features (4.7)
  • ✓Discounts from two packages
  • ✓14-day trial
−Cons
  • ✗Bill climbs with packages and orders
  • ✗Premium Support at $499 a month
  • ✗Built for Shopify
Verdict

The best tool if your lever is the cart, not the homepage. Start with one package (Cart & Merchandising) and add the next once the first has proven its lift.

7
Best recommendation API for technical teams

Recombee

4.0/5

Recombee isn't an app you install. It's an API: a service your developer calls from your store, mobile app or emails. You send it your catalog and shopper interactions, it sends back the products to show. You decide where and how they appear.

It has the best value-for-money score in this ranking (4.5) if you can integrate it. The Free plan is free forever under 100,000 interactions and requests a month, 20,000 active users and 20,000 items, but with no support and no uptime guarantee. Standard starts at $99 a month for the same volume, with extra traffic units from $0.70 down to $0.25 as volume grows. Pro starts at $1,699, Premium at $4,499, and Platinum is on quote. The 30-day trial unlocks everything; after that you upgrade or drop back to Free.

The limit is the same as any API: without a developer, nothing shows up. Ease of use scores 3.2, the lowest in the ranking. Also ignore the price grids still floating around comparison sites ("Plus at $899", "Pro at $1,499"): they're out of date.

Standout features
  • One API for store, app and email
  • Permanent free plan for prototypes
  • Full 30-day trial
+Pros
  • ✓Best value score in the ranking (4.5)
  • ✓Not tied to any ecommerce platform
  • ✓Public pricing up to Premium
−Cons
  • ✗Developer required
  • ✗Free plan has no support or uptime guarantee
  • ✗Big price jump from Standard to Pro
Verdict

The right pick for a technical team that wants to build its own blocks. Prototype on Free and move to Standard when you need support.

8
Best for high-volume retailers

Bloomreach

4.0/5

Bloomreach Discovery handles product search and recommendations, and sits in a suite that also covers marketing and customer data. For a large retailer, the appeal is that on-site and email recommendations draw on the same profiles. It lists 175+ integrations, and its AI (Loomi) is included, with AI agents as an add-on.

It's the most expensive option here, and Bloomreach is upfront about it: from $60,000 a year for smaller brands, then a quote based on your audience, catalog, products and usage. Billing is annual only. Onboarding is included, which matters on a project this size.

A strong suite for a retailer with the team to run it. For an SMB, the entry ticket makes no sense next to Clerk.io or Nosto. If you're already on Bloomreach and want out, our dedicated page covers alternatives and migration.

Standout features
  • Search, recommendations and marketing on shared profiles
  • 175+ integrations
  • Onboarding included
+Pros
  • ✓Very deep features (4.6)
  • ✓One platform for site and email
  • ✓AI included
−Cons
  • ✗From $60,000 a year
  • ✗Annual billing only
  • ✗Needs a team and traffic to pay off
Verdict

Only worth a look with heavy traffic and a team to run the suite. Otherwise, the money goes further with Clerk.io or Nosto.

Six more options worth knowing

These aren't ranked: they're free and built in, they don't publish a price, or they serve a single platform. Depending on your setup, some are the right first step before paying for an engine.

01

Shopify Search & Discovery: the free starting point

Free, native

Shopify's free app shows "related" products, generated automatically, and "complementary" products you pick by hand. It requires Shopify Network Intelligence to be switched on. For a new store, it's the simplest way to set a baseline before paying for anything.

The limits are well known: the listing sits at 2.6 out of 5, with about one reviewer in five giving one star, mostly over search (synonyms removed, a 25-filter cap). On recommendations, merchants report that the "manual only" setting isn't respected, that you can't hide automatic suggestions to show only your own picks, and that the complementary products block doesn't appear on some themes such as Dawn. Check your theme before relying on it.

Athos Commerce (formerly Klevu): search and recommendations mid-merger

AI search

Klevu and Searchspring combined under the Athos Commerce brand in 2025, and the Shopify app "Klevu AI Search & Discovery" now presents three Athos Commerce offers. It covers AI search, merchandising and recommendations, and works with Shopify Markets and Hydrogen. The listing holds 4.9 out of 5, on just 13 reviews.

We don't rank it: the three plans on the official listing carry no prices, and the figures quoted elsewhere contradict each other. If it's on your list, ask for an exact price and the post-merger product roadmap in the demo.

03

Barilliance: monthly recommendations, no long contract

Any platform

Barilliance sells Product Recommendations à la carte from $250 a month, tiered on your annual revenue. Onsite personalization and real-time triggers are sold separately at the same entry price. It installs without code on any platform, with dedicated human support and personal onboarding.

The appeal is the commitment: month to month, no long contract. No trial is mentioned. Worth a look if you want a human on the other end and a published entry price.

WooCommerce: native cross-sells and an official AI extension

Native and extension

WooCommerce handles cross-sells and upsells natively, but you pick them product by product. For more, the official extension store sells "AI Product Recommendations" for $39; it runs on OpenAI, so OpenAI API costs come on top.

For a small catalog, well-chosen manual cross-sells already go a long way. For thousands of products, Clerk.io and Doofinder both have ready-made WooCommerce integrations.

05

PrestaShop: no native AI, pick modules carefully

Modules

PrestaShop has no native AI recommendations. Modules exist from FME Modules and Webkul, but some are heavy to install: Webkul's AI module needs a ChromaDB database and an AI server, set up over SSH on your own server.

Without a developer, go for a vendor with a maintained PrestaShop integration: Clerk.io and Doofinder are the two in this ranking. Algolia has no official PrestaShop module.

06

Dynamic Yield: enterprise personalization

Enterprise

Dynamic Yield, owned by Mastercard, targets large retailers that want to personalize the whole journey: recommendations, content, testing. It publishes no pricing, and the figures you'll see elsewhere don't come from the vendor.

We don't rank it without a price we can verify. If you're in that league, put it up against Bloomreach and Nosto, and compare contracts on the same basis: traffic, modules and term length.

Real cost

What really drives the bill for a recommendation engine

The entry price tells you very little. Each vendor charges on a different basis, and that basis decides whether the tool stays profitable as your store grows. Three models split the market.

On your orders or revenue: LimeSpot, Rebuy, Barilliance

The price rises with your business. Rebuy prices each package on monthly order count. LimeSpot Turbo follows your orders, but Max follows your entire store's revenue: $150 a month up to $50K, then more, even if the app drives only a small slice of those sales. Barilliance tiers on annual revenue. Easy to forecast, but cost grows with your success, not with what the tool actually adds.

On request volume: Algolia, Recombee, Doofinder, Clerk.io

Here, every render costs. Algolia charges $0.60 per 1,000 recommendation requests after 10,000 included on Grow: 100,000 requests a month comes to $54. Recombee and Doofinder sell volume tiers, and Clerk.io bumps your tier if your three-month average runs over. The lever is blocks per page: three carousels on every product page triple your usage.

On an annual contract: Nosto, Bloomreach, Dynamic Yield

A negotiated fee based on traffic, GMV and modules. Bloomreach starts at $60,000 a year, billed annually. Nosto adds a platform fee plus a fixed fee tied to volume. The price holds for the year, but it's renegotiated at every renewal, and switching mid-contract is expensive.
  • Write down what the tier is based on: orders, store revenue or requests.
  • Count recommendation blocks per page before picking a per-request plan.
  • Run the numbers on your peak month, not your average one.
  • Ask what happens on overage: blocked, billed per unit or bumped a tier.
  • Read the term length and cancellation notice before signing.
  • Check whether yearly payment is refundable.
Traps

Three traps that cost money with recommendations

What merchants report in reviews and forums once the tool is live.

"Attributed" revenue that would have happened anyway

A tool's dashboard often counts any sale where a shopper saw or clicked a block as "influenced". A customer who came for your best-seller and clicked it in a carousel gets counted. LimeSpot merchants say they don't recognize the revenue credited to the app. The only reliable number comes from a holdout group: a share of visitors who never see recommendations.

The cold start

An engine learns from your data: views, carts, orders. With a small catalog or little traffic, it has little to learn from, and its picks look like your best-seller list. Forum advice is consistent: generic widgets get ignored, suggestions tied to the product being viewed do better. Until your data builds up, hand-picked pairings do just as well.

Your theme and page speed

On Shopify, what shows up depends on your theme. Some merchants can't find the complementary products block on their theme, others see pages slow down after installing a recommendation app. Two apps each injecting scripts doubles the pain. One app, placed through your theme's app blocks, avoids most of it.
  • Require an A/B test or holdout group before judging lift.
  • Start with manual pairings if your catalog is small.
  • Measure page speed before and after installing.
Field tips

Six settings that make recommendations pay

What merchants who run a recommendation engine day to day keep coming back to. They apply whatever tool you pick.

01

Set a baseline with your platform's free tool

Method

Run Shopify Search & Discovery or WooCommerce cross-sells for a month, and note your average order value and block click-through rate. Without that baseline, you can't tell whether a paid engine earns more than it costs.

Length
One month of data
02

Keep a holdout group

Measurement

Ask the vendor to keep a share of visitors without recommendations, or run an A/B test. Compare average order value across both groups. It's the only number that shows what the tool really adds, far more reliable than dashboard "influenced revenue".

Measure
AOV with vs without recommendations
03

Cap carousels per page

Cost

On per-request tools like Algolia, every rendered block counts, and batching calls doesn't lower the bill. One well-placed block on the product page and one in the cart beat four stacked carousels nobody scrolls.

Rule of thumb
One block per key spot
04

Check what the tier is based on before upgrading

Trap

Before moving to LimeSpot Max, check what the price is calculated on: your whole store's revenue, not the app's sales. Ask every vendor the same question: orders, revenue or requests, and over what period.

Question
What is the tier based on?
05

Prototype for free with an API

Technical

If you have a developer, Recombee's Free plan (under 20,000 items and 100,000 requests a month) or Algolia's (5,000 Recommend requests) is enough to try blocks on part of the site before signing anything.

Cost
$0 for a prototype
06

Install only one recommendation app

Speed

Two apps each rendering their own blocks step on each other and weigh your pages down. Pick one that uses your Shopify theme's app blocks, and fully uninstall the old one, scripts included, before switching.

Rule
One app, placed through theme blocks
FAQ · 9 questions

Product recommendation software · FAQ

  • How much does product recommendation software cost?
From $0 to more than $60,000 a year. Free plans exist at LimeSpot (up to 10 orders a month), Algolia (5,000 requests) and Recombee (under 100,000 requests). Public prices start at $9.99 a month for LimeSpot, $25 per package for Rebuy and $49 for Doofinder. Clerk.io and Nosto are quote-based, and Bloomreach starts at $60,000 a year.
  • Are Shopify's built-in recommendations enough?
To get started, yes. Search & Discovery is free and shows automatic related products plus complementary products you pick by hand. It doesn't personalize per shopper, won't let you hide automatic suggestions, and the complementary block depends on your theme. Move to a paid engine when you want a personalized cart or to measure lift with an A/B test.
  • What's the best recommendation engine for a small Shopify store?
LimeSpot on Free or Turbo, from $0 to $19.99 a month up to 250 orders. If your lever is the cart rather than the product page, Rebuy's Cart & Merchandising package starts at $25 a month. Avoid annual contracts until you've measured lift against a holdout group.
  • AI or rule-based recommendations: which works better?
AI wins once you have enough data; rules win before that. An AI engine needs views, carts and orders to learn, and on a small catalog its picks look like your best-sellers. Hand-picked pairings and best-sellers per category hold up well until traffic grows. Most tools here let you mix both.
  • How do I measure the real lift from recommendations?
With a holdout group. A share of visitors sees no recommendations, and you compare average order value and conversion rate between the groups. Dashboard "attributed revenue" also counts shoppers who would have bought anyway, so it almost always overstates the gain.
  • Should search and recommendations come from the same vendor?
Yes if your site search is weak: one tool learns from both behaviors and you only load one script. Doofinder and Clerk.io include both, as do Algolia and Nosto. If your search already works, a cart specialist like Rebuy will often move average order value more.
  • Can one engine run across Shopify, WooCommerce and Magento?
Yes. Clerk.io has ready-made integrations for 13 platforms, including all three, and Doofinder covers Shopify, WooCommerce, BigCommerce, PrestaShop and Adobe Commerce. Recombee and Algolia work anywhere through their API, with a developer. LimeSpot and Rebuy are built for Shopify.
  • Do on-site recommendations also work in email?
With several tools, yes. LimeSpot adds email and SMS on Max, Clerk.io has an Email module, Recombee can be called from any sending tool, and Bloomreach shares the same profiles between site and campaigns. Check that your email platform is on the integration list.
  • Can I switch recommendation tools without losing everything?
Partly. Your catalog and orders stay in your store, but rules, manual pairings and the profiles the tool learned have to be rebuilt. Export your rules before cancelling, uninstall the old app cleanly, and allow a few weeks for the new engine to relearn.
