How much does Descript cost?
Every plan, what extra credits and media hours cost, and the yearly bill based on what you actually edit.
The short answer: Descript has a free plan and three paid tiers. Hobbyist is $16 a month billed annually ($24 monthly), Creator is $24 ($35 monthly) and Business is $50 ($65 monthly). Pricing is per seat, so a three-person team on Creator pays three times.
The sticker price is only half the story. Each plan comes with a monthly allowance of media hours and AI credits that resets every cycle and never rolls over. Run out, and you buy a top-up, but only on Creator and Business. We compared the official pricing page, Descript's billing help docs and six alternatives to show what you'll really pay.
The Descript button on this page is an affiliate link, and using it doesn't change the price you see on Descript's own pricing page. The ranking is editorial: a sponsored spot is always labeled on its card, and no affiliate link changes a score.
What each Descript plan costs
Descript sells seats by the month, and every seat comes with two meters: media hours (anything you record, upload or generate) and AI credits (what Underlord, its AI co-editor, and tools like Studio Sound burn through). Both allowances grow as you move up, and each tier adds its own set of features.
Two plans the pricing page doesn't push are worth knowing too: Enterprise, priced on request, and the education and nonprofit rate, which is the only real discount in the lineup.

Prices taken from Descript's pricing page and help center in 2026. The page advertises savings of "up to 35%" on annual billing; the math on the actual prices gives 33% on Hobbyist, 31% on Creator and 23% on Business. No bonus hours or credits are listed on top of the allowances above.
Which feature is on which plan?
Four things separate one Descript tier from the next: export resolution, whether you can add teammates, the size of your allowances and access to top-ups. Find the line that blocks you. That's the plan you need.
Free: judge the tool, don't publish with it
One media hour a month and 100 one-time AI credits are enough to see how transcript editing works: delete a sentence in the text and the video cut follows. The 720p watermarked export makes it a poor fit for anything public. There's no time-boxed trial of a paid plan, so this free tier is the trial.
Hobbyist: an audio podcast or 1080p videos
Ten hours a month covers a weekly one-hour episode with room to spare, and the watermark is gone. But Hobbyist is a single-person account capped at 1080p, and it can't buy top-ups. When your 400 credits run dry, you either wait for the next cycle or upgrade.
Creator: 4K, teammates and top-ups
Creator is the first plan that exports in 4K, opens the stock media library and adds 20+ AI tools on top of Underlord. It takes up to three people, each at $24 a month billed yearly, and it's where top-ups for hours and credits become available. For a YouTube channel, this is the realistic starting point.
Business: brand control and other languages
Business opens Brand Studio to the whole team, adds translation and dubbing in 30+ languages with proofreading, and comes with priority support under an SLA. Allowances rise to 40 hours and 1,500 credits per seat. If none of those three things matter to you, Creator plus the occasional top-up costs less.
- Solo, 1080p, light AI use? Hobbyist at $16 a month billed yearly.
- Exporting in 4K or working with one or two others? Creator at $24 a seat.
- Need top-ups? Creator at a minimum.
- Translating or dubbing your videos? Business at $50 a seat.
- School or nonprofit? Apply for the $8 rate.
How we worked out the real cost
Every figure here comes from Descript's pricing page, its help center articles (top-ups, refunds, taxes, the education rate) and the alternatives' own pricing pages. For each profile, we picked the cheapest plan that covers its media hours, then looked at what forces an upgrade: 4K, a second seat, an empty credit balance. User reviews helped us spot what costs money after checkout. They never set a price.
Credits are the hardest part to forecast. Descript publishes no fixed price per action and points you to the Usage tab, which only shows what each run cost after the fact. So we don't quote per-action costs. We price what a top-up costs once your allowance is gone.

Six common profiles, from a solo podcaster to a school. For each one: the plan that covers it, the math, and what would push the bill up. Amounts are before tax. Outside the US, Descript adds no tax to its listed prices, so local VAT comes on top unless you're a business with a valid tax ID.

Billing traps, and how to avoid them
These come straight from Descript's billing help pages and from the complaints that keep coming up among its users: credits gone after one edit, a refund turned down, a cancellation that returns nothing.
Billing traps
AI credits drain faster than media hours
Trap #1Studio Sound, filler word removal, Green Screen, Eye Contact, AI speech, avatars and Underlord all spend credits. Underlord charges twice: once for its "agent brain" and once for the tool it calls. Descript lists no per-action price. You only see the cost afterward, in your account's Usage tab.
Several users say they burned through Creator's 800 credits on a single project. The safer habit: run an AI tool on a two-minute clip first, check what it cost, then decide whether to run it on the full episode.

Hobbyist can't buy top-ups
PlanTop-ups for hours and credits only exist on Creator and Business. On Hobbyist, an empty allowance locks the features that need it until your next cycle. The only way out is upgrading to Creator, which applies right away with prorated billing.
If you edit a lot of video with AI, size your plan on your busiest month, not your average one. Once you're on Creator, a $35 pack of 350 credits gets you through without changing plans.

Whatever you don't use is gone
AllowancesMonthly media hours and credits reset at every renewal, and leftovers don't carry over. Top-ups last 12 months and only kick in once the monthly allowance is spent. They're non-refundable, and legacy plans can't buy them.
Buy a top-up the day you need it, never just in case. And the biggest pack only pays off if you use it: 4,000 credits for $200 works out to $0.05 a credit, versus $0.10 on the small pack.

Refunds come down to 48 hours
DeadlineA plan is refundable only if you ask within 48 hours of the invoice date. An added editor seat is refundable within 7 days. Top-ups are never refunded. After that, canceling or downgrading takes effect at the end of the paid term, with no prorated refund for the time left.
In practice: don't buy annual on day one. Start on Free, then pay one month on monthly billing. It costs you $8 to $15 more that month, but you don't lock in a full year on a tool you haven't measured.

The annual discount never actually hits 35%
MathThe pricing page promises savings of up to 35% for paying yearly. Run the numbers plan by plan and it's less: 33% on Hobbyist ($16 vs $24), 31% on Creator ($24 vs $35) and 23% on Business ($50 vs $65). In dollars, that's $96, $132 and $180 per seat per year.
Switching from monthly to annual happens immediately; going from annual back to monthly waits until the end of the cycle. Start monthly, switch later. You lose nothing.

Outside the US, tax comes on top
Non-USDescript bills in US dollars everywhere. If you're outside the United States, its fees include no tax of any kind, so VAT or GST gets added at checkout. A business that enters a valid tax ID may qualify for the reverse charge and pay the pre-tax amount.
Add your tax ID before the first payment, not after. And check your card's foreign transaction fee if your account isn't in dollars.

Multitrack uploads can double your hours
PodcastFor sessions recorded in Rooms, Descript's remote studio, the rule is clear: a one-hour session with five participants uses 60 media minutes, not 300. For separate tracks you upload yourself, some podcasters report that each file is counted on its own, which the help center doesn't spell out.
Do the cautious math: a 90-minute raw episode in two tracks, four times a month, could approach 13 hours, past Hobbyist's 10. Record in Rooms when you can, and check your meter after the first upload.

Legacy plans are moving to the new pricing
Existing usersDescript started migrating legacy and sunset plans to the current lineup automatically in late 2025, and warns that some prices could go up to match. Those plans can't buy top-ups, and their extra hours used to cost $2 an hour.
If you subscribed before the change, compare your next invoice with the table above. It's a good moment to check whether a smaller plan, or another tool, covers what you actually do.

Six alternatives, one card each
Each card covers who the tool is for, what it costs for the same job as Descript and the limit that might send you back. They're ordered for the most common reader of this page: a podcaster or video creator who finds the credit bill too hard to predict.
Alternatives
Riverside: record your guests for the same price
Remote podcastFor the podcaster who interviews remote guests and wants a clean track for each person. Pro costs $24 a month billed yearly, $288 a year, or $29 month to month: exactly what Descript Creator costs annually. The free plan lets you try 2 hours of multitrack recording, with Riverside's watermark on everything.
The catch: Riverside is a recording studio first. If most of your work is cutting from the transcript, Descript gets you there faster. Grow, at $34 billed yearly, is aimed at shows that publish on a steadier schedule.

Kapwing: browser editing for a third less
Online teamFor a small team editing in the browser that wants 4K without paying for Creator. Pro costs $16 a month billed yearly, $192 a year, with 1,000 credits a month, more than Descript Creator's 800. Month to month, it's $24 per member, so three members come to $72 a month.
The catch: Kapwing runs on credits too, so the guesswork doesn't go away. The free plan only gives you 10 credits and exports in 720p with a watermark. Business, at $50, jumps to 4,000 credits for heavier teams.

Veed: 4K and subtitles for $19
Cheapest 4KFor the creator who mostly posts to social with captions. Veed Pro exports in 4K for $19 per user a month billed yearly, $228 a year, which is $60 less than Descript Creator. If 1080p is enough, Veed's Creator plan is $10 a month billed yearly, $120 a year, with no watermark.
The catch: Veed advertises savings of up to 60% on annual billing, which tells you monthly costs a lot more. Every user is a separate seat, just like Descript. For a long podcast edited from the transcript, it's a weaker fit.

Short-formFor TikTok, Reels and Shorts creators who want lots of effects and AI. CapCut Pro costs $179.99 a year or $19.99 a month, with 1,200 AI credits a month, more than Descript Creator. The Teams plan runs $12.49 a seat.
The catch: CapCut says its displayed price is a reference only and the final amount shows after you sign in. Transcript editing, the core of Descript, isn't its strength. For a one-hour podcast, it does less of the work.

Adobe Premiere Pro: no media-hour meter
ProfessionalFor the editor who works on a timeline and is done counting media hours. Premiere Pro costs $22.99 a month on an annual plan billed monthly, or $275.88 a year. There's no hour cap: you edit as much as your machine can handle.
The catch: there's a real learning curve, and you only get 25 generative credits a month. For a podcaster who mostly trims sentences, it's heavier than Descript. And the annual commitment applies even if you stop halfway.

Adobe Podcast: clean up audio for free
FreeFor the podcaster who mainly used Descript for Studio Sound. Adobe Podcast does voice cleanup for free: up to 30 minutes per file and one hour of Enhance Speech a day. Premium comes with Adobe Firefly Pro at $19.99 a month and raises that to 2 hours per file and 4 hours a day.
The catch: it's not a full video editor. It fixes and enhances audio, it doesn't replace editing. Paired with a free editor, though, it can be enough for an audio-only show.

So, is Descript worth the price?
Our take after comparing the price list, the billing docs and six alternatives: Descript is still the fastest way to edit from text, but the bill depends on credits nobody can price in advance. Our overall score is 3.4 out of 5, pulled down by that unpredictability.
Yes, for a podcast edited from the transcript
A weekly one-hour episode fits in Hobbyist at $192 a year before tax. Cutting the ums and restarts in the transcript takes minutes, without touching a timeline. If you use AI sparingly, it's one of the best time-for-money deals on this list.
Yes, carefully, for a video channel
Creator at $288 a year gets you 4K and top-ups. The risk is credits: a month of heavy Underlord work can call for an $80 top-up. Watch the meter and budget for one heavy month per quarter.
No, if you want a fixed bill
If surprises bother you, Premiere Pro costs $275.88 a year with no hour cap, and Veed Pro gives you 4K for $228. For recording guests, Riverside at the same price does the job better. Descript earns its price when text-based editing saves you hours every week.
- Start on Free, then pay one month on monthly billing.
- Ask for a refund within 48 hours if the plan isn't right.
- Run AI tools on a short clip before the full episode.
- Add your tax ID before the first payment if you're outside the US.
- Switch to annual once you've measured your usage.

Common questions about Descript pricing
How much does Descript cost per month?
On monthly billing, Descript costs $24 a month for Hobbyist, $35 for Creator and $65 for Business, per seat and before tax. Billed yearly, those plans drop to $16, $24 and $50 a month. Enterprise is priced on request. If you need 4K export, the number to plan around is $24 billed yearly, not $16.Is Descript free?
Yes, Descript has a free plan with no time limit: 60 media minutes a month, 100 one-time AI credits, 720p export with a watermark and 5 GB of storage. There's no free trial of a paid plan, so the free plan is the trial. Spend your first hour on a real recording, not a demo, to see whether transcript editing fits how you work. How much do extra AI credits cost on Descript?
A top-up costs $35 for 350 credits, $80 for 1,000 credits or $200 for 4,000 credits, which works out to $0.10 down to $0.05 per credit. Extra media hours cost $25 for 5 hours, $80 for 20 hours and $150 for 50 hours. Top-ups are limited to Creator and Business, last 12 months and are non-refundable. Hobbyist can't buy them at all. What happens when I run out of Descript AI credits?
You can't run tools that spend credits until your subscription renews. On Creator and Business, a top-up takes over right away. On Hobbyist, you either wait for the next cycle or upgrade to Creator, which is prorated. The 100 credits on the free plan never refill. Can I get a refund on a Descript subscription?
Yes, if you move fast. A plan is refundable when you ask within 48 hours of the invoice date, and an added editor seat within 7 days. Top-ups aren't refundable. After that, Descript doesn't refund unused time: your plan stays active until the end of the term you paid for.How do I cancel Descript without losing money?
Cancellation takes effect at the end of the period you've already paid for, and your plan stays active until then. Nothing is refunded for the remaining months of an annual plan. To lose nothing, cancel right before renewal, or within 48 hours of an invoice if you want that charge back.Does Descript pricing include tax?
Outside the United States, no: Descript's fees include no tax of any kind, and prices are shown in US dollars in every country. VAT or GST is added on top. A business that enters a valid tax ID may qualify for the reverse charge and pay only the pre-tax amount. Is there a Descript discount for students or nonprofits?
Yes, for eligible education institutions and nonprofits: $8 per editor a month billed yearly, or $12 monthly. The plan includes every Hobbyist feature and allows up to 3 editor seats per drive. Descript says it's the only plan it sells at a discounted rate, so the discount doesn't extend to Creator or Business.Does Descript Rooms count minutes for every guest?
No. A Rooms recording uses the length of the session, not one count per participant: one hour with five people uses 60 media minutes, not 300. That's a real advantage over uploading separate tracks. A still image added to a project counts as 1 second. Is there a Descript promo code?
We didn't find any official Descript promo code. The only public discounts are annual billing, worth 23 to 33% depending on the plan, and the education and nonprofit rate. Be wary of coupon sites promising more: the real discount always shows on the checkout page.
