European AI assistant: 6 ChatGPT alternatives, checked from model to data center

We compared the AI assistants sold as European, then read their pricing pages and what they promise about your data. Only one runs a model built in Europe for the general public.

Short answer: if you want a European AI assistant where both the company and the model are European, the pick is Mistral Vibe, the Paris-built chatbot formerly called Le Chat (renamed in 2026). It has a free plan, and Pro is $14.99 a month before tax. If privacy matters more than who trains the model, Lumo from Swiss company Proton offers zero-access encryption from $9.99 a month on annual billing. For a team that wants a workplace assistant deployed in the EU, look at Langdock (Berlin) or Dust (Paris). One thing to keep in mind: a European interface running an American model still sends your prompts to that model's provider.

So we asked every tool the same four questions: who runs the company, which model actually answers, where your data is stored, and whether your chats train anyone's AI. Prices are the ones on official pricing pages, read in 2026, in the currency those pages show. Not fussed about the flag? Our ranking of the best conversational AI assistants covers ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini, and there is a separate list of AI assistants for business.

Mistral Vibe: Le Chat got a new name, not a new owner

European model

Looking for Le Chat? It is now called Vibe. Mistral AI, the Paris company behind it, renamed it in 2026 and split it into two modes: Work for everyday office tasks and Code for developers. Subscriptions and chat history moved over automatically.

It is the only general-public assistant on this page that answers with its own large language model, trained by a European company. It searches the web and shows sources (through a partnership with the AFP news agency), keeps memories between chats, has a canvas for editing long texts, generates images with Black Forest Labs, and runs on iOS and Android.

Pricing, as the official page shows it. The free plan includes limited messages, web searches and coding sessions. Pro is $14.99 a month before tax, with full access to the Code mode and $15 of API credits each month (the API lets you plug the model into your own tools). Team is $24.99 per user per month: document libraries up to 30 GB per user, domain verification and data export. Enterprise is quote-based and can run on your own infrastructure.

Your data. Mistral says data is hosted in the European Union by default. A US endpoint exists, and some features may send data outside the EU; the sub-processor list sits in its Trust Center.

The catch. Mistral does not publish hard numbers for free-plan limits, and describes Pro only as a multiple of free. Users like the speed and answers that stay on topic. They complain about weaker instruction-following than ChatGPT, flaky connectors and slow support.

Tip: verified students pay $5.99 a month instead of $14.99, for up to 12 months. And before you paste client data into the free plan, open the privacy settings and check whether your chats are used for training.

Best for anyone who wants a European model with a real free plan. Not for people who need exact quotas before paying. Rolling it out across a team? See our Mistral agency work.

Dust: AI agents connected to your team's tools

Teams

Dust is a Paris company, but it is not a consumer chatbot. It is a platform for building agents: assistants that read your documents, internal tools and team conversations, then answer or act from that data. You pick the model behind each agent from several providers.

Pricing. Free gives you 500 credits, once. Pro is €24 per seat per month on annual billing before tax, or €30 monthly, with 8,000 credits. Max is €120 annual (€150 monthly) for 40,000 credits. Enterprise is quote-based with credits pooled across teams. There is no dollar price on the page.

Your data. Dust offers data residency in the US or the EU. Pick the EU when you open the account if that matters to you. And remember the model has its own provider: an agent running on a US model sends its requests there.

The catch. Credits mean you have to watch usage, and value for money is the tool's weak spot. For one person who just wants to chat with an AI, it is overkill.

Tip: start with one agent on one source (your internal docs, say) before opening it to the whole team. The 500 free credits are enough to judge the answers.

Best for teams that want assistants plugged into their own stack. Not for individuals. Need help setting it up? See our Dust agency.

Langdock: a Berlin-built workplace assistant, deployed in the EU

Business

Langdock is a Berlin company that sells an AI assistant to companies, per seat. Its pricing page puts an EU deployment front and center, which is the point for European buyers who need their legal team to sign off.

Pricing. Core is €23.20 per seat per month before tax and Work is €31.20. There is a 7-day trial, no free plan, and no dollar pricing: the page shows euros only.

The catch. It is a company tool through and through. If you are on your own, Mistral Vibe or Lumo will cost less and get you started today. Ask Langdock which model providers your seats will use, and where each one processes data, before you sign.

Tip: run the 7-day trial with the people who will use it most, not with the IT team alone. A week is short, so prepare five real tasks in advance.

Best for a European company rolling out an assistant to its staff. Not for solo users.

Lumo: Proton's private assistant, built in Switzerland

Privacy

Lumo comes from Proton, the Geneva company known for encrypted email. Proton says Lumo uses zero-access encryption (even Proton cannot read your stored chats), never trains on your conversations, and is built and based in Europe.

Pricing. There is a free plan. Lumo Plus is $9.99 a month on annual billing, charged as $119.88 every 12 months.

The catch. Switzerland is in Europe but not in the EU. If a contract asks for an EU-based vendor, check with your lawyer whether a Swiss one qualifies. And privacy is the main pitch here: if you want the broadest feature set, Mistral or a US assistant goes further.

Tip: the $9.99 rate assumes you pay for a full year up front ($119.88). Start on the free plan for a week to see if it covers your daily questions before you commit.

Best for people who care about privacy more than anything else. Not for teams that need agents and integrations.

Mammouth: every big model behind one French interface

Multi-model

Mammouth is a young French company with a team in Paris. One subscription gets you Claude, GPT, Llama, Grok, Mistral, Gemini, DeepSeek, Qwen and Kimi, which is handy when you want to compare two models on the same prompt.

What that means for your data. The interface is European, but most models are American or Chinese, so your prompt goes to whichever provider you pick. Mammouth says your content is never used to train models and that its providers do not retain prompts sent through it. It does not say where its own servers are.

Pricing. The pricing page lists Starter at $12, Standard at $24 and Expert at $72 a month, excluding VAT, with $2, $4 or $10 of API credits. No free plan. Above 100 licenses, pricing is custom.

What users say. Reviews are mostly positive about having everything in one place. The recurring complaints: support that is hard to reach, quotas that bite on the entry plans, and doubts about which exact model version is being served.

Best for solo users who want several AIs for less than two subscriptions. Not for anyone who needs a European model: only the interface is.

Swiftask: 80+ models, hosted in Europe, made in Nantes

SMB

Swiftask is based in Nantes, France. Like Mammouth, it gives you several model families (OpenAI, Claude, Gemini, Mistral), more than 80 in total, but it is built for teams: plans per group of users, single sign-on (SSO, one login for all your tools) and a custom tier with a self-hosted model.

Your data. Swiftask says the platform is hosted in Europe, GDPR compliant, and that your data is never used to train AI models. A prompt sent to an American model still travels through that provider.

Pricing, in euros, with no mention of VAT. Pro is €18 a month (€216 billed yearly) for one user and 5 million credits. Team Starter is €129 a month for up to 10 users, 28 million credits and SSO. Team Growth is €649 a month. No free plan, but a 7-day trial.

Tip: for five people, Team Starter works out at about €26 per person, against €18 for five separate Pro accounts. Team only pays off if you need SSO or are close to ten users.

Best for a small company that wants several models for the whole team, with European hosting in writing. Not for someone looking for a free plan.

European or US AI assistant: what actually changes

Before you pick

Check that an AI assistant is really European

"European AI" covers three very different things: a European model, a European interface on foreign models, or a project you cannot actually use. Here is how to sort them in fifteen minutes.

1. The model: who generates the answers

Most comparison posts skip this. Mistral runs its own models. Mammouth, Swiftask and Dust let you choose models from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and others. The company is European; the engine often is not. Check which model is selected before you upload anything sensitive.

2. The company and its owner

Read the terms and find the legal entity. Then check who owns it. Aleph Alpha, long cited as Germany's answer to OpenAI, agreed in 2026 to be acquired by Cohere, a Canadian company. It sells to businesses with no public price, so it is not on this list.

3. Hosting: written down or not

Mistral writes "EU by default". Swiftask writes "hosted in Europe". Langdock advertises EU deployment. Dust lets you pick EU or US. Mammouth does not say where its servers are. Anything not written down, ask for in writing before you sign.

4. Training: what happens to your chats

Lumo, Mammouth and Swiftask state that your conversations are not used for training. On Mistral, check the privacy setting, especially on the free plan. A chat with a client name or revenue figures should never end up in a training set.

5. Tools that look like assistants but are not

DeepL, from Cologne, is excellent for translation and writing help (Write Pro is €6.99 per user per month, billed annually, VAT included), but it is not a conversational assistant. France's Lucie chatbot shut down three days after launch in 2025. Neither is a ChatGPT replacement.

6. The real price: currency and tax

Mistral, Lumo and Mammouth show dollars, mostly before tax. Dust and Langdock show euros before tax. Swiftask shows euros without stating VAT. For a team, compare the per-seat cost over twelve months, not the headline price.

FAQ

Questions people ask about European AI assistants

  • What happened to Mistral's Le Chat?

It was renamed Vibe in 2026. Same company, same models, with a Work mode for office tasks and a Code mode for developers. Subscriptions and conversations moved over automatically, and the free plan and mobile apps are still there.

  • Is there a free European alternative to ChatGPT?

Yes, two. Mistral Vibe has a free plan with limited messages, web searches and coding sessions; Mistral does not publish the exact caps. Lumo from Proton also has a free plan, with zero-access encryption. Dust gives 500 one-time credits, which is a trial rather than a plan.

  • Where does Mistral store my data?

In the European Union by default, according to Mistral. A US endpoint exists and some features may move data outside the EU; the sub-processor list is in its Trust Center. Enterprise customers can run it on their own servers or in a private cloud.

  • Is a GDPR-compliant chatbot safe for client data?

Not automatically. GDPR compliance says how data is handled, not who can be compelled to hand it over. Check three things: who the model provider is, where data is hosted, and whether your chats are used for training. A European interface running a US model sends prompts to that US provider.

  • Which European AI assistant is best for a company?

It depends on what you need to connect. For a simple assistant across the team, Mistral Vibe Team is $24.99 per user per month before tax. For an EU-deployed workplace assistant, Langdock Core is €23.20 per seat. For agents that read your docs and tools, Dust Pro is €24 per seat on annual billing. Our list of AI assistants for business goes further.

  • Is Mistral as good as ChatGPT?

Not across the board. Users praise its speed and focus, but say it follows detailed instructions less reliably. ChatGPT has more features. Mistral wins on entry price ($14.99 against $20 for ChatGPT Plus) and on EU hosting by default. Our ChatGPT review covers the other side.

  • Is Aleph Alpha still a European option?

Not for most buyers. Aleph Alpha, from Heidelberg, agreed in 2026 to be acquired by Canada's Cohere. It sells to businesses and public bodies with no public pricing, so it does not compete with a self-serve assistant you can sign up for today.
