BigBlueButton alternatives: the right virtual classroom for your LMS

Six destinations, one per reason to leave, and a seven-step migration plan.

The short answer: Zoom if your instructors want something they already know and a solid Moodle plugin, Microsoft Teams or Google Meet if your institution already pays for Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace, Jitsi Meet if you want to stay open source, and bbbserver if BigBlueButton is fine but the server isn't. Glowbl, a French vendor, fits training companies that want a classroom-first tool with LMS integration. Rankings are editorial: a sponsored spot is always labeled on its card, and no affiliate link changes a rating.

The real reasons

Why schools leave BigBlueButton (it's rarely the software)

BigBlueButton is free, open-source software built for teaching: shared whiteboard, polls, breakout rooms, shared notes. It has shipped inside Moodle core since version 4.0. People leave because of how they get to it: a tight free tier, a demanding server, or a host that no longer fits. Six reasons, each checked against official documentation or admin mailing lists.

The free Moodle tier stops at 60 minutes and 25 people

Add a BigBlueButton activity to Moodle without your own server and you're on the free tier run by Blindside Networks, the company behind BigBlueButton. Moodle's own docs spell out the limits: 60 minutes per session, 25 concurrent users, recordings deleted after seven days and not downloadable. Students' webcams are visible only to the moderator. A two-hour lab or a 30-student section doesn't fit.

Registration has been mandatory since 2024

Since 2024, the free tier needs credentials from the Blindside portal, entered under Site administration, Plugins, BigBlueButton (Moodle 4.4 and later). Plenty of admins found out the day the activity stopped working. It's a small task, but it's often the moment the "stay or go?" question comes up.

Running your own server is expensive in hardware and hours

The install guide asks for a production server with Ubuntu 24.04 64-bit, 16 GB of memory with swap enabled, 8 CPU cores with high single-thread performance, 250 Mbit/s symmetrical bandwidth, and 500 GB free for recordings (50 GB if you turn recording off). Add security updates, TLS certificates, and UDP ports 16384 to 32768. Without a comfortable Linux admin, the "free" server becomes your most expensive line item.

Audio breaks up as the room fills

It's the most common complaint on the Moodle forums and in user reviews: robotic voices, dropouts, lag. On the developer list, one admin describes a 48 GB, 12-core server where jitter becomes audible around 10 users and passes 180 ms at 14, with screen sharing unaffected. Moodle forum regulars put it plainly: that's a BigBlueButton hosting problem, not a Moodle one.

Recordings stuck in "processing"

On a self-hosted server, a recording can sit in processing for days and then vanish from the list. Maintainers patched several of these bugs in recent 3.0 releases, and a video conversion failure was fixed in 2025. The catch: if you don't keep the server updated, you keep the bugs. And a missing lecture video means a flood of student emails.

Your hosting contract ends

When an institution drops its premium BigBlueButton hosting, recording retention often falls back to seven days. A large US university told its faculty exactly that in 2026: BigBlueButton recordings kept for seven days at most, against 180 days for Zoom, with one instruction: download every video and move it elsewhere. That's the classic forced migration, on a short clock.

The 6 alternatives

BigBlueButton alternatives, tool by tool

For each tool: why switch, who it's for, the catch, how to move from BigBlueButton and Moodle, and what it costs. We compared each vendor's official pricing page and Moodle integration guide. Prices are those listed in 2026, in the currency the vendor shows.

01

Zoom: the easiest switch for instructors, with a real Moodle plugin

Default pick

Why switch to Zoom. Your instructors and students already know it, and that's the biggest win in any migration: nobody needs training. Zoom Pro allows 30-hour meetings with 100 participants and 10 GB of cloud recording per license. Breakout rooms come on every plan, free included.

Who it's for. Training companies, bootcamps and departments that want to escape the 60-minute cap without running a server, with a handful of instructors teaching at the same time.

Who it's not for. A university with hundreds of instructors: every host needs a license, and the bill scales with headcount.

The catch. Zoom Basic is free but ends meetings at 40 minutes and only records locally, so it doesn't replace BigBlueButton's free tier. Known trap with Zoom LTI Pro: paying customers have reported the cloud recordings tab sitting empty inside their course. Check that on a pilot course before you switch everyone.

How to migrate from BigBlueButton. Two routes. The mod_zoom plugin, free and maintained on moodle.org, creates meetings from Moodle, syncs participants and handles course backup and restore; it needs an account-level API app in Zoom. The other route, Zoom LTI Pro, uses LTI (the standard that plugs an outside tool into an LMS such as Moodle or Canvas) and expects a Pro account. Keep the BigBlueButton activity for history and add Zoom next to it.

Microsoft Teams: the obvious move on a Microsoft 365 campus

Microsoft 365

Why switch to Teams. If your institution already has Microsoft 365, your faculty already have Teams. Microsoft ships two LTI tools for Moodle: Teams Meetings, which creates and lists course meetings, and Teams Classes, which links a Moodle course to a class team.

Who it's for. Universities and schools on Microsoft 365 with a Microsoft admin who has time for the setup.

Who it's not for. A small training company that doesn't use Microsoft 365: you'd be buying an ecosystem to get a classroom.

The catch. Setup takes two people at once, your Moodle admin and your Microsoft 365 tenant admin, working through the Microsoft LMS Gateway. You need Moodle 3.10 or later plus the Microsoft 365 plugin for Moodle, and Teams Classes also requires an education license. On price, Teams Essentials is listed at $4 per user per month on an annual commitment, with 300 participants and 30-hour meetings.

How to migrate from BigBlueButton. Start with Teams Meetings LTI on one pilot course: it's the simpler of the two. Add Teams Classes only if you also want teamwork outside live sessions. If you're weighing the reverse move, our guide to switching from Microsoft Teams covers what people miss.

Google Meet: if your school already lives in Google Workspace

Already paid for

Why switch to Google Meet. If your instructors already have Google Workspace accounts, Meet costs nothing extra: you create the room from Calendar, the link goes out with the invite, the recording lands in Drive. No server, no new tool to learn.

Who it's for. K-12 districts, colleges and training teams already on Google Workspace, with sections under 150 people.

Who it's not for. Anyone who wants BigBlueButton's whiteboard, polls and shared notes in one window: Meet is a meeting tool first.

The catch. Business Starter can't record; recording starts at Business Standard. Free accounts end meetings of three or more people at 60 minutes, with a warning at 50. Participant caps rise with the edition: 100 on Starter, 150 on Standard, 500 on Plus, 1,000 on Education Plus. Check per-seat pricing for your country on Google's pricing page.

How to migrate from BigBlueButton. The simple way: create the meeting in Google Calendar and paste the link into a URL resource in your Moodle section, with the time in the title. Share the Drive recording with enrolled students only. Watch the sharing setting: "anyone with the link" takes your lecture out of the course.

Jitsi Meet: stay open source, no account for students

Open source

Why switch to Jitsi. If you picked BigBlueButton because it's open source, Jitsi Meet keeps that promise: fully open source, self-hostable, and free with no account needed for participants.

Who it's for. Institutions that want control of their data and have someone to run a server, and solo instructors teaching small groups.

Who it's not for. Anyone who relies on BigBlueButton's built-in whiteboard and polls: Jitsi is a video room, not a full classroom.

The catch. The public meet.jit.si server isn't built for regular classes: since 2023 the moderator has to sign in with Google, GitHub or Facebook. To give instructors moderator rights from Moodle, the mod_jitsi plugin uses tokens, which require your own Jitsi server. Recording goes to YouTube or Dropbox, not to built-in storage.

How to migrate from BigBlueButton. Install mod_jitsi (maintained by UDIMA, a Spanish university): it adds a Jitsi activity to the course, tracks completion by time spent in the session, and gives a guest URL for outside speakers. Plan the self-hosted Jitsi server first, then the plugin.

bbbserver: keep BigBlueButton, lose the server

Stay on BigBlueButton

Why switch to bbbserver. Sometimes BigBlueButton isn't the problem; the box it runs on is. bbbserver, run by the German company invokable, hosts BigBlueButton for you on European servers in ISO 27001-certified data centers. Your instructors keep the interface they know, whiteboard and polls included.

Who it's for. Training providers and schools that like BigBlueButton but no longer have a sysadmin, especially when instructors don't all teach at the same hour.

Who it's not for. If you're leaving because of BigBlueButton's interface or its audio under load, a new host won't fix everything. US institutions that need US data residency should look elsewhere: bbbserver advertises European hosting.

The catch. Plans are sold as concurrent connections shared across your whole account: 5 connections for €7, 10 for €9, 30 for €25.50, 100 for €80, 1,000 for €700 per package (the pricing page doesn't state the billing period). From 400 connections up, a single conference caps at 300 participants. Work out your real peak before you pick.

How to migrate from BigBlueButton. Recording storage is unlimited and the LMS connection is included: you swap the server URL and shared secret in Moodle's BigBlueButton settings, and your existing activities keep working. The trick: ten instructors who never teach at the same time can share one small package.

Glowbl: a classroom-first tool for training businesses

Training companies

Why switch to Glowbl. Glowbl is built in Lyon, France, and aims at live training rather than office meetings. If you sell courses to European clients who ask for an EU vendor, it belongs on your shortlist.

Who it's for. Training companies and independent trainers running small cohorts, and organizations that want the classroom wired into their LMS.

Who it's not for. A school hunting for free: the Discovery plan caps at three participants. It's a trial, not a classroom. Prices are in euros, which matters if you budget in dollars.

The catch. The Independents plan, €24.90 a month before tax, caps at 20 participants with recording. LMS integration and rooms of up to 300 come with the Organizations plan, from €1,000 a year before tax. There's no tier in between.

How to migrate from BigBlueButton. A solo trainer can start on Independents and share the room link in the course. An organization on Moodle should ask for a demo of the LMS integration on its own Moodle before signing, then run one pilot cohort.

The comparison

The 6 alternatives side by side

Our default pick: Zoom for a training team that needs out of the 60-minute cap fast, Teams or Meet when the license is already paid for, bbbserver to keep BigBlueButton. For scale: five instructors on Zoom Pro billed annually cost 5 × $14.16, or $70.80 a month. The same five on bbbserver, if they never teach at the same time and no class tops 30 people, fit in the 30-connection package at €25.50.

Migration plan

Moving off BigBlueButton in seven steps

Order matters. Each step protects something: your recordings, courses already running, student consent, and your instructors' patience. Plan two to four weeks between inventory and cutover, depending on how many courses you run. Try to land it between terms.

01

Inventory courses and recordings

Week 1

List every Moodle course with a BigBlueButton activity, the instructor who runs it, typical session length and headcount. Then find your peak: how many classes run at the same time on your busiest morning? That one number decides your bbbserver package or your Zoom license count.

Moodle's course activity report gets you most of the way. On your own server, published recordings sit in BigBlueButton's recording directories.

Time
half a day
Key number
peak concurrent classes
02

Save recordings before they expire

Urgent

On the free Moodle tier, recordings delete after seven days and can't be downloaded: grab what matters before each deadline, or move to a host first. On a server or host that allows it, open playback, then the three-dot menu or right-click, "Save video as" to get the MP4.

On your own server, look for failures first: .fail files in /var/bigbluebutton/recording/status, then rerun processing with bbb-record --rebuild and the recording ID. To get one video file per session, community tools such as bbb-recording-exporter and bbb-render exist; they're third-party projects, so run them on a copy.

Deadline
7 days on free Moodle tier
Tip
bbb-record --rebuild
03

Pick the destination from your numbers

Decision

Go back to the inventory. Sessions over 60 minutes with more than 25 people: free tiers are out everywhere. One or two instructors: a Zoom Pro license or Glowbl Independents. Dozens of instructors who don't teach at once: a shared-connection package on bbbserver often beats per-host licenses. Campus already on Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace: start with what you already pay for.

Rule
start from what you already pay for
04

Connect the new tool to Moodle

Admin

Install the plugin or LTI tool on a test Moodle if you have one, otherwise in a hidden course. mod_zoom needs an account-level API app in Zoom. Teams Meetings LTI needs your Moodle admin and Microsoft 365 admin together. mod_jitsi needs your own Jitsi server for moderator tokens. With bbbserver, you only change the server URL and shared secret in Moodle's BigBlueButton settings.

Don't delete the BigBlueButton activity from past courses: it holds the session history.

Who

Risk

05

Run one full pilot course

Week 2

One willing instructor, a real session, a real group. Check four things: students get in from Moodle without an extra account, the instructor has host rights, the recording shows up in the course, and audio holds with the full class. The third one breaks most often, especially with Zoom's LTI tool.

Check
recording appears in the course
06

Brief instructors and tell students

Comms

One page per tool: where to click to start, how to share a screen, how to open breakout rooms, where the recording ends up. Tell students about the switch with a sample link. Remind everyone about bandwidth: BigBlueButton already asks for 1 Mbit/s up and 2 Mbit/s down per participant, and at least 2 Mbit/s up for an instructor sharing a screen.

Format
one-page guide per tool
07

Cut over cleanly, consent included

Wrap-up

Before reusing an old recording in a new course, make sure the people on camera agreed to it; under GDPR in Europe, student faces and voices are personal data. On your own server, turn recording off by default (disableRecordingDefault=true in bbb-web.properties) during the transition. By default, BigBlueButton purges raw data from unrecorded sessions after 14 days. Keep the old server read-only for a month after the last session, then shut it down.

Timing
one read-only month after last session
Rule
consent before reuse

Migration pitfalls

What makes a BigBlueButton migration fail

The same mistakes show up from one school to the next, on the Moodle forums and on BigBlueButton's support lists. None of them is deeply technical. They're oversights, and each one costs lecture videos or a botched class.

Letting recordings expire

Seven days on the free tier, no download. Often the same when a hosting contract ends. Back up first, migrate second.

Buying a license per instructor without checking the peak

Thirty instructors who never run more than five classes at once don't need thirty licenses. Price a concurrent-connection package before you sign.

Testing with three coworkers

Audio trouble shows up at 10 or 15 people, not three. Your pilot needs a real class at peak hour.

Forgetting the Zoom or Microsoft admin

mod_zoom and Teams Meetings LTI need vendor-side settings, not just Moodle ones. Book the person with admin rights on Zoom or Microsoft 365 for install day.

Deleting old BigBlueButton activities

They hold the session history and recording links. Hide them instead.

Switching mid-term

Students who change rooms halfway through a course get lost. Cut over between terms or at the start of a new module.

FAQ · 10 questions

BigBlueButton alternatives: common questions

  • Is BigBlueButton really free?

The software is; running it often isn't. BigBlueButton is open source, but you pay either for a server and an admin's time or for a host. The free tier built into Moodle exists with tight limits: 60 minutes, 25 users, recordings gone after seven days.

  • What does it cost to self-host BigBlueButton?

The minimum production box is 16 GB of RAM, 8 fast cores, 250 Mbit/s symmetrical bandwidth and 500 GB of disk for recordings. Admin time comes on top and is usually underestimated. For comparison, bbbserver hosts 10 concurrent connections for €9 per package and 100 for €80.

  • What's the best free BigBlueButton alternative for Moodle?

Jitsi Meet with the mod_jitsi plugin is the only free option in our comparison with no session time limit. For regular classes, plan your own Jitsi server: the public one makes moderators sign in, and moderator rights from Moodle rely on tokens it doesn't handle.

  • Is Zoom better than BigBlueButton for teaching?

Zoom is easier and more familiar; BigBlueButton has more teaching tools in one window (whiteboard, polls, shared notes). Zoom Pro runs 30-hour meetings for 100 people at $14.16 per host per month billed annually. BigBlueButton wins on cost if you already have someone to run it well.

  • How do I add Zoom to Moodle?

With the free mod_zoom plugin from moodle.org, or with Zoom LTI Pro. mod_zoom needs an account-level API app in Zoom, not a user-level one. Either way, confirm on a pilot course that cloud recordings show up inside Moodle.

  • Does BigBlueButton work with Canvas?

Yes. Canvas ships BigBlueButton as Canvas Conferences, and BigBlueButton also accepts LTI launches from other LMSs. The free tier described on this page is the one Blindside provides inside Moodle. If your Canvas hosting contract is ending, the recording deadline is the first thing to check.

  • How do I download a BigBlueButton recording?

Open playback, then the three-dot menu or right-click on the video, and pick "Save video as". It doesn't work on the free Moodle tier, which blocks downloads. On your own server, bbb-recording-exporter or bbb-render produce one video per session.

  • How long does BigBlueButton keep recordings?

Seven days on the free Moodle tier and on Blindside's Essentials plan. On your own server, as long as you keep the disk; raw data from unrecorded sessions is purged after 14 days by default. bbbserver advertises unlimited storage.

  • Is Livestorm a BigBlueButton alternative?

For a conference or webinar, yes; for a class, rarely. Livestorm is built for broadcasting to an audience and bills per attendee credit (€2.50 per credit on Pro). We rate it 3.3 out of 5; the details are in our Livestorm review.

  • Should I leave Moodle too?

Only if Moodle itself is the problem. Every tool on this page plugs into Moodle, so switching the virtual classroom doesn't force an LMS change. If the LMS is the issue, read our guide to switching from Moodle before you move both at once.
