Clio alternatives: where to move your law firm, and how to migrate without losing data
Six destinations in detail, one per reason to leave, and an eight-step migration plan.
The short answer: MyCase if you want the closest all-in-one replacement with public pricing, PracticePanther if you are a solo who wants a low entry price, CosmoLex if your books and trust ledgers are the real headache, Smokeball if you want a vendor to scope and migrate everything for you, Amberlo if you want two simple plans, Lawcus if you want trust accounting on the cheapest plan. One thing before you choose: Clio exports matters, contacts, tasks, calendar and notes as CSV files, but most destinations only take your trust balances as one total per client, not the transaction history. We compared the six destinations and checked their pricing pages in 2026.
The ranking is editorial: a sponsored placement is always labeled on its card, and no affiliate link changes a score.
Why firms leave Clio, and why leaving takes work
Clio is a strong product. It holds 4.7 out of 5 across more than 1,700 reviews on software directories, and users like its interface. People leave over the bill, over what the entry plan leaves out, and over a growing product they do not need all of. Six reasons, all checked in 2026.
Only the first price is easy to read
Clio's pricing page says plans "start at $49 USD per user per month" across four tiers: Starter, Core, Signature and Elite. That headline is the number most people compare. The tier you actually need, once you add intake, AI or more automation, is the number that lands on your card. For a five-lawyer firm, every step up is multiplied by five, every month.
Add-ons stack on top
Client intake and CRM (Clio Grow), document drafting and AI sit in separate products or higher tiers. MyCase, by comparison, puts case management, billing and trust accounting in one public grid, and charges $39 more per user only if you want its full accounting module.
Small firms say it is getting pricey
On r/LawFirm, a small-firm owner listing options put it plainly: Clio is good, "but they are getting a little pricey." The same threads point to PracticePanther, MyCase and Smokeball. Clio has also ended grandfathered pricing for long-time customers in the past, so a renewal is the moment to compare.
A bigger company, a bigger product
Clio bought legal research company vLex for $1 billion and raised $500 million in 2025. That brings research and AI into the platform. If you run a three-person firm that needs matters, time, billing and trust, you may be paying for a roadmap aimed at much larger firms.
Trust history does not travel
Every destination we looked at imports trust as a balance per client. MyCase says it directly: "Only the full balance can be migrated." Your ledger history stays in Clio, so you need to archive the reports before you cancel. That is not a reason to stay, but it is a reason to plan.
Export takes an admin and a checklist
Bulk export in Clio Manage is limited to administrators. Each data type has its own "Excel Ready CSV" on the Exports page, and matter exports only include matters the exporting user can see. Tasks, unbilled time and A/R reports come from other screens. Miss one and it does not move.
You are leaving because… go to…
The right Clio alternative depends on what is pushing you out. Usually one line fits. Each card jumps to the full profile below.

Clio alternatives, tool by tool
For each tool: why move to it, who it is for, its limit, how to migrate from Clio, and what it costs. Prices are the ones shown on each vendor's official page in 2026, per user per month. Scores match our ranking of law practice management software.
The tools
MyCase: the closest all-in-one replacement
All-in-oneWhy move to MyCase. It covers what most small firms use Clio for (cases, contacts, time, invoicing, trust accounting) with every price on the page. Basic is $50 per user per month billed annually, Pro $100 and Advanced $130 ($60, $120 and $150 month to month). MyCase Accounting adds $39 per user on Pro and Advanced if you want to drop QuickBooks.
Who it is for. Small firms that want one tool and a predictable bill.
Who it is not for. A firm that needs full accounting on the cheapest plan: Accounting is only offered on Pro and Advanced.
Its limit. On Advanced, the 8am IQ Discovery Assistant OCR is capped at 5,000 pages per user each month, shared across the team ($30 per extra 5,000 pages), and the real price for a firm that wants accounting is $139 per user on Pro, not $50.
How to migrate. MyCase publishes a Clio export guide and offers migration as a service that may include contacts, matters, notes, tasks, documents and invoices. It brings over contacts, cases, custom fields, notes, unbilled time and expenses, tasks, single calendar events and unsent invoices. Trust moves as a full balance only. Use the 10-day free trial, no card needed, to import a handful of real matters first.
- Price
- Basic $50/user/mo (annual)
- Trial
- 10 days, no card
- Migration
- service on request
- Limit
- trust moves as a balance
PracticePanther: the low entry price for a solo
Solo priceWhy move to PracticePanther. It has the most granular public price ladder: Solo at $49 per user per month on an annual plan, Essential at $69, Business at $89 and Business Pro at $114. Monthly billing adds $10 to each tier. For a solo who mostly bills flat fees, that is a clean, cheaper starting point than a Clio tier with add-ons.
Who it is for. Solos and small firms that want simple software and room to climb.
Who it is not for. A firm that holds client funds and wants the cheap plan: trust accounting sits in Business Pro.
Its limit. If you hold money in trust, compare PracticePanther at $114, not $49. That is close to MyCase Pro.
How to migrate. The pricing page says you get a dedicated account manager if you migrate, and PracticePanther publishes its own guide to exporting from Clio. The trial is 7 days, no card needed, which is short: prepare your Clio CSV files before you start it.
- Price
- Solo $49/user/mo (annual)
- Trial
- 7 days, no card
- Migration
- dedicated account manager
- Limit
- trust on Business Pro only
CosmoLex: when the books are the problem
Accounting built inWhy move to CosmoLex. If you run Clio next to QuickBooks and reconcile trust in a spreadsheet, CosmoLex puts practice management and legal accounting in one system, with trust ledgers, automatic trust transfers and holds. One database means no sync to break at month end.
Who it is for. Solos and small firms whose biggest worry is trust compliance and bookkeeping.
Who it is not for. A firm whose bottleneck is intake or client portals: the pricing page sells accounting first.
Its limit. Launch costs $49 per user per month, Core $99 and Pro $129, with $120 off per user per year on annual billing. Check which tier carries the full accounting you need. The trial allows only one bank feed connection.
How to migrate. Onboarding includes live training with guided data migration. Bring your Clio trust listing and A/R reports to that session: opening balances are what make or break a clean first reconciliation.
- Price
- Launch $49/user/mo
- Annual
- $120 off per user per year
- Migration
- guided at onboarding
- Limit
- one bank feed in trial
Smokeball: hand the migration to the vendor
GuidedWhy move to Smokeball. It sells four packages (Bill, Boost, Grow and Prosper+) that build on each other, from billing and trust accounting up to document automation, intake and workflows. Firms on r/LawFirm describe moving to Smokeball after looking at "so many alternatives." If you want someone to scope the move with you, its sales-led model is the point.
Who it is for. Small firms, especially three or more staff on Grow, that want templates, automation and a guided rollout.
Who it is not for. Anyone who wants to price software without a call.
Its limit. No price is shown anywhere: pricing depends on users, plan, term and add-ons. AI and some modules are add-ons on most tiers.
How to migrate. Smokeball offers data migration for firms moving from another system and confirms its cost in the quote. Its support site has a dedicated guide to exporting data from Clio. Ask for the total per user per year, migration included, in writing.
- Price
- quote only
- Packages
- Bill, Boost, Grow, Prosper+
- Migration
- priced in the quote
- Limit
- no public price
Amberlo: two plans, nothing hidden
Simple pricingWhy move to Amberlo. It keeps the menu short: Grow at €59 and Premium at €89 per user per month (the pricing page quotes euros), with time tracking and billing at the core. If you are tired of reading tier comparison tables, this is the easiest grid on the page.
Who it is for. Small firms that bill by the hour.
Who it is not for. A firm that wants trust accounting on the cheaper plan: it is a Premium feature.
Its limit. Setup and onboarding cost a one-time fee of €299 or $299, and data migration is priced per project. For three lawyers on Grow, year one is €2,124 in licenses plus the €299 setup, before migration.
How to migrate. The trial lasts 7 days. Get a migration quote first, then use the trial to import one real matter with unbilled time and check your rates.
- Price
- Grow €59/user/mo
- Setup
- €299 or $299 once
- Trial
- 7 days
- Limit
- trust on Premium
Lawcus: trust accounting on the entry plan
Low entry priceWhy move to Lawcus. If the Clio bill grew because trust accounting and billing sat on higher tiers, Lawcus puts them on its first plan. Essential costs $39 per user per month billed annually ($49 month to month) and lists case and matter management, billing and invoicing, and trust accounting. Growth runs $59 ($69 monthly) and adds QuickBooks and Xero sync, Google and Office 365 sync, Nova AI and custom fields. Elite runs $79 ($89 monthly) and adds workflow and marketing automation with a custom report builder.
Who it is for. A solo or small firm that holds client funds and wants the lowest entry price with trust in the box.
Who it is not for. A solo who wants the phone app: the pricing page says the mobile application is available only for firms with more than one user.
Its limit. Some useful pieces are paid add-ons. Two-way text messaging costs $10 per attorney per month plus a one-time number registration fee, and data import and migration sit in the paid add-on list. For three lawyers on Essential, the annual plan comes to $117 a month.
How to migrate. Lawcus says its migration team can import your data from your existing software. The pricing page lists basic data migration as included on Elite and Enterprise in one note and on Enterprise only in another, and bills large or customized migrations separately: get the scope and the price in writing before you sign. Then use the trial (Lawcus extends it on request) to import a few real matters with their trust balances.
- Price
- Essential $39/user/mo (annual)
- Trust
- on Essential
- Migration
- basic on Elite, in writing
- Limit
- mobile app needs 2+ users
Clio and 6 alternatives side by side
Our default pick: MyCase for most small firms, PracticePanther for a solo with little trust activity. For scale, take a three-lawyer firm that holds client funds. MyCase Basic runs $150 a month billed annually. PracticePanther Business Pro, the tier with trust accounting, runs $342. CosmoLex Launch runs $147, if that tier covers your trust needs. Amberlo Premium runs €267 plus the €299 setup. Lawcus Essential, with trust, runs $117. Clio starts at $147 at its entry price, before add-ons. The table gives one row per tool: price and trust on the left, who it fits and migration on the right.
| Entry price and trust | Best for, and migration | |
|---|---|---|
| ClioStarting point | From $49 per user per month; trust balances exportable as a report | Firms that want a large ecosystem; CSV export by admins |
| MyCaseAll-in-one | Basic $50 annual ($60 monthly); trust in the core product | Small firms; migration service, trust as balance |
| PracticePantherSolo price | Solo $49 annual ($59 monthly); trust on Business Pro ($114) | Solos; dedicated account manager when migrating |
| CosmoLexAccounting | Launch $49; trust accounting listed, check which tier carries it | Firms that want one ledger; guided migration at onboarding |
| SmokeballGuided | Quote only; trust accounting in Bill | Firms of 3+ staff; migration priced in the quote |
| AmberloTwo plans | Grow €59, €299 setup; trust on Premium (€89) | Hourly-billing firms; migration priced per project |
| LawcusLow entry | Essential $39 annual ($49 monthly); trust on Essential | Solos and small firms; migration team, scope in writing |

Migrate from Clio in eight steps
Order matters. Each step protects something: your deadlines, your clients' money, your receivables, your confidentiality.
The steps
Take stock of everything that lives in Clio
Week 1List open and closed matters, contacts, custom fields, document templates, stored file volume, integrations (email, calendar, payments, accounting) and billing rules per client. Write down every upcoming deadline in the calendar.
This list does two jobs: it gets you an accurate migration quote, and it becomes your cutover checklist.
- Time
- half a day
- Risk if rushed
- wrong migration quote
Bill what you can, then set a cutoff date
Saves workSend ready invoices and close finished matters in Clio. Billed time and expenses do not migrate to most destinations, so the less work in progress you carry, the cleaner the move. Pick a cutoff day: after it, nobody enters time in Clio.
- Gain
- fewer lines to move
Export each data type as CSV
CriticalLog in as an administrator: only admins can bulk export. On the Exports page, download the "Excel Ready CSV" for matters, contacts, calendar and notes. Clear every filter first, and check matter permissions: matters your account cannot see do not export.
Export tasks from the Tasks tab and unbilled time and expenses from the Activities page. Download documents separately.
- Format
- CSV or XLSX
- Access
- administrator
Pull trust balances and receivables
CriticalRun the Trust Listing report, excluding zero-balance clients, and the Accounts Receivable report grouped by client, both as CSV. Destinations import one balance per client, not the history.
Save the detailed ledger reports as PDFs too, and reconcile them against your bank statement before cutover.
- Moves
- balance, not history
- Check
- bank reconciliation
Clean the files before import
Import guides from MyCase and others ask for the same thing: headers in the top row only, no blank rows, no duplicates. Match client names between the contacts file and the matters file, and map Clio custom fields to the destination's fields.
A matter whose client name matches no contact lands orphaned.
- Risk if rushed
- matters without clients
Import a pilot batch, then the rest
Longest stepImport ten real matters with their contacts and unbilled time. Check rates, deadlines and documents. Then import everything, contacts first, matters second. Recurring calendar events do not migrate: rebuild them by hand, court dates first.
- Time
- days to weeks
- Risk if rushed
- missed deadlines
Reconnect payments and invoice numbering
Before cutoverSet up online payments in the new tool and send a test invoice to yourself. Make sure invoice numbers continue from the last one issued in Clio, with no gaps or duplicates, and that trust and operating accounts are mapped to the right bank accounts.
- Test
- one paid test invoice
- Check
- invoice numbering
Cut over, then keep Clio read-only
On cutover day, update your intake form, payment links and email templates. Keep Clio on its lowest plan for a month to check nothing is missing, then cancel with a full archive saved outside Clio.
- Time
- one month in parallel
- Archive
- CSV and PDF outside Clio

What makes a Clio exit go wrong
The same mistakes show up in vendor import guides and in lawyer forums. None is technical. They are oversights, and each one touches money or deadlines.
Exporting without admin rights
An export from a limited account only includes the matters that account can see. You think you have everything, and a partner's matters are missing. Run every export as an admin, with filters cleared.
Assuming trust history moves
Destinations take one balance per client. The ledger history stays in Clio. Without archived reports, you cannot back up an old transaction if a client or your bar asks. Save the reports as PDFs before you cancel.
Forgetting recurring events
Only single events migrate. A monthly hearing or a weekly client call disappears. List them from the Clio calendar and rebuild them the day you import.
Comparing headline prices
Clio's $49, PracticePanther's $49 and CosmoLex's $49 are not the same product. Price your real firm with trust accounting, accounting add-ons, setup and migration. Our law practice management ranking breaks down each grid.
Leaving integrations pointed at Clio
If you connected Clio to other tools, for example through Make (our Clio Manage in Make guide shows how), turn each scenario off before cutover. Otherwise new clients keep landing in a tool nobody checks.
Switching e-signature at the same time
One change at a time. If you signed engagement letters in Clio, pick your e-signature tool before the move: our page on e-signature for law firms compares the options.
- Inventory of matters, contacts, templates, documents and integrations
- Ready invoices sent, cutoff date set
- CSV exports run as admin with filters cleared
- Trust Listing and A/R reports saved as PDF and CSV
- Balances reconciled with bank statements
- Files cleaned: headers, duplicates, client names
- Pilot batch of ten matters checked
- Recurring events rebuilt
- Payments checked, invoice numbering continuous
- Clio kept a month in parallel, full archive outside Clio
Clio alternatives: frequently asked questions
What is the best alternative to Clio for a small law firm?
MyCase for most small firms: case management, billing and trust accounting with public prices from $50 per user per month on an annual plan. PracticePanther is cheaper for a solo who rarely holds trust funds. CosmoLex fits firms whose main pain is accounting.
Is there a cheaper alternative to Clio?
Yes, at the entry level. PracticePanther Solo and CosmoLex Launch both start at $49 per user per month. The catch is trust accounting: at PracticePanther it sits on Business Pro at $114. Price the tier you would actually use.
Can I export all my data from Clio?
Most of it. Matters, contacts, tasks, notes, calendar, unbilled time and expenses export as CSV, and documents download separately. What does not move to most destinations: trust transaction history (only the balance), recurring calendar events and billed time. Archive those as reports.
How long does it take to switch from Clio?
The export takes a day. The import depends on volume: a few days for a solo, several weeks for a firm with thousands of documents. Plan another month with Clio in read-only mode before you cancel.
Clio vs MyCase: which is better?
MyCase if you want every price on the page and trust in the core product, with an accounting add-on at $39 per user. Clio if you rely on its larger app ecosystem or its research and AI products. Both are cloud-based and both are rated well by users.
Will my clients notice the switch?
If they use a client portal or pay online through Clio, yes: their logins and payment links change. Send a short note the week you cut over with the new link. Everyone else will not notice.
Is there a Clio alternative with built-in AI?
Most tools now sell AI as an add-on or on higher tiers: MyCase meters AI document processing per user, and Smokeball sells its Archie AI as an add-on on most packages. To compare AI tools on their own, see our ranking of legal AI tools.
Can I negotiate with Clio before leaving?
It is worth a try. Lawyers have reported getting a discount after complaining when Clio changed pricing for long-time customers. Go in with a competing written quote that includes trust accounting and migration, so you compare like for like.
Is there a Clio alternative with trust accounting on the entry plan?
Yes. Lawcus lists trust accounting on Essential, at $39 per user per month billed annually or $49 month to month. MyCase includes trust in its core product from Basic at $50. PracticePanther keeps trust for Business Pro at $114, and Amberlo for Premium at €89. If you hold client funds, compare the tier that carries trust, not the entry price.
