DataForSEO alternatives: where to go, and what it really costs

Seven APIs sorted by use case, cost at equal volume, and a seven-step migration plan.

Short answer: pick SerpApi if the task queue is the problem and you want instant results across many engines, Serper for the cheapest real-time Google data, SearchApi for a flat monthly bill, Bright Data for a big free tier and pay-on-success billing. If you mostly use DataForSEO for keywords or backlinks, look at SE Ranking API, Ahrefs API or Semrush API instead, because search results APIs (SERP APIs) don't cover that data. One thing before you go: on the Standard queue, DataForSEO is still the cheapest option here at $0.60 per 1,000 results pages. We compared all seven on their official 2026 pricing pages.

The real reasons

Why people leave DataForSEO, and why some come back

DataForSEO is pay-as-you-go with no subscription. You top up a balance, every call draws it down, and the funds never expire. Developers on forums regularly call it the most economical option around, and they have a point. People leave for other reasons: the entry ticket, the queue, bills that run higher than the list price, and data some users find thinner than the big SEO suites. Here are six, each one documented.

A $50 minimum top-up

Your first payment can't be under $50, and new accounts only get $1 of trial credit. For a developer wiring up a side script, or a freelancer tracking 30 keywords, that's a lot of cash parked up front. One reviewer asks why it can't be $5 or $10 like other providers. The upside: that $50 never expires, so it isn't lost, just tied up.

A queue you have to manage

The default Standard mode works in two steps. You post a task (Task POST), wait, then fetch the result (Task GET), usually after polling the Tasks Ready endpoint. Average turnaround is about 5 minutes, with a stated target of 45 minutes. Your code has to track every task's state and retry the ones nobody collected. A competitor's blog sums it up well: most switchers are escaping complexity, not cost.

Bills higher than the sticker price

The $0.0006 list price buys one page of 10 results. Since Google dropped the parameter that returned 100 results at once, DataForSEO bills every block of 10, so tracking 100 positions costs $0.006 per keyword, ten times the headline price. Multipliers stack on top: a site: operator costs 5x, and AI Overview adds a base charge. Live mode, handy while you build, runs $0.002 a page, about 3.3x Standard.

The mid-2026 price increase

DataForSEO raised prices 20% on Labs, Backlinks, most Keywords Data endpoints (22% on Google Trends Explore) and most On-Page endpoints. The SERP API wasn't on that list. In exchange, the $100 monthly commitment that gated Backlinks and LLM Mentions access is gone. If your usage leans on Labs or Backlinks, your bill went up a fifth without a single code change.

Disputed backlink and volume data

Even a happy five-star reviewer reports a 40 to 70% gap in backlink data compared with one of the leading SEO platforms. Several reviews also find search volumes higher than Semrush or Ahrefs. For a client link audit, that's a serious reason to look elsewhere. For rank tracking it doesn't matter much: a Google results page looks the same whichever API fetches it.

No dashboard, and costs that are hard to predict

DataForSEO is built for developers: no dashboard to read your data, just JSON. Forecasting a project's cost is tricky because the price follows the endpoint, not the tool calling it. In one open-source SEO plugin for Claude, the cost table was simply wrong, and the v3 MCP server strips the cost field from responses in its default mode. You can't see what each call costs anymore.

7 alternatives

DataForSEO alternatives, API by API

For each API: why switch to it, who it fits, its catch, how to move your calls over, and what it costs. Prices come from the official pricing pages in 2026, in US dollars before tax. The first four replace the SERP API; the last three replace Labs, Keywords Data and Backlinks rather than raw results.

01

SerpApi: instant answers on almost every search engine

Richest SERP data

Why switch to SerpApi. It's the exact opposite of a queue. One GET request with your key, and the structured results page comes back in the same response. No task IDs, no second call. SerpApi covers Google, Bing, Google Maps, YouTube and many more engines. Only successful searches count: cached, errored and failed searches are free. Reviewers single out the support team, including on billing issues that got fixed fast. Our score: 4.1 out of 5.

Who it's for. Developers putting search results inside a product, an AI agent or an internal tool, who care more about an instant answer than the lowest unit price.

Who it's not for. High-volume rank tracking. At $15 per 1,000 searches on the Developer plan, SerpApi costs 25x DataForSEO Standard.

The catch. It's a monthly subscription, so unused searches don't roll over. And it's SERP data only: no keyword database, no backlinks.

How to migrate. Swap keyword for q, location_code for location (plain text, city level works best) plus gl for the country, and language_code for hl. Pagination moves from depth to start (0, 10, 20). In the response, organic items[] become organic_results[], and People Also Ask lands in related_questions. Need deferred jobs? async=true is there.

02

Serper: the cheapest real-time option, if Google is enough

Cheapest real-time

Why switch to Serper. Serper sells credit packs and answers in real time, no queue. The unit price drops as packs grow: $1 per 1,000 on Starter ($50 for 50,000 credits), $0.75 on Standard ($375 for 500,000), $0.50 on Scale, $0.30 on Ultimate ($3,750 for 12.5 million). The first 2,500 queries are free, no card needed. Against DataForSEO Live at $2 per 1,000, that's two to almost seven times cheaper for the same instant response. Our score: 4.0 out of 5.

Who it's for. Prototypes, AI agents that need live Google search, and small rank trackers that want instant results on a tight budget.

Who it's not for. Anyone who needs Bing, YouTube or Amazon. Serper is Google only (Search, Images, News, Maps, Places, Videos, Shopping, Scholar, Patents, Autocomplete).

The catch. Credits are valid for 6 months. One reviewer says about $1k of credits expired with nothing support could do. Buy the pack you'll burn in six months, not the one with the best unit price. And budget 10 queries for 100 positions, like everywhere since Google stopped serving 100 results per page.

How to migrate. One API key, one call per keyword with country and language. Replace your Standard queue with direct calls and delete the code that polled for ready tasks. Check Serper's docs for the exact parameter names before you rewrite your client.

SearchApi: a predictable subscription, many engines, failures free

Flat budget

Why switch to SearchApi. If what bugs you about DataForSEO is never knowing next month's bill, SearchApi fixes that. One subscription, a set number of searches, and only successful calls (status 200) are charged. Developer is $40 for 10,000 searches ($4 per 1,000), Production $100 for 35,000, BigData $250 for 100,000, Scale $500 for 250,000 ($2 per 1,000). The large Octo tiers go down to $1 per 1,000. Our score: 3.9 out of 5.

Who it's for. Product teams and agencies that have to commit to a fixed budget with finance or a client, at a steady mid-size volume.

Who it's not for. Spiky usage. You pay the subscription in quiet months too, while a DataForSEO balance just sits there at no cost.

The catch. It costs more than DataForSEO Standard at equal volume: 100,000 searches run $250 a month on SearchApi versus $60 on the DataForSEO Standard queue. The free allowance is only 100 requests.

How to migrate. Synchronous call with a key, a keyword, a country and a language. Coverage is wide: Google, Bing, Baidu, Yandex, DuckDuckGo, Yahoo, Naver, YouTube, Amazon and eBay. If you tracked several engines on DataForSEO, you keep a single API.

Bright Data SERP API: 5,000 free requests a month, then pay on success

Biggest free tier

Why switch to Bright Data. It has the largest free tier in this comparison: 5,000 requests a month, no card. After that, pay-as-you-go costs $1.50 per 1,000 requests, and the Scale plan is $499 a month for 380,000 requests (then $1.30 per 1,000). You only pay for successful requests, and responses come back in under 5 seconds. In async mode, only the send step counts toward usage. Our score, from our full review: 4.2 out of 5.

Who it's for. Data teams and AI agents that also scrape, and want proxies, collection and SERP data on one platform. Also developers who want to start without parking $50.

Who it's not for. Anyone after cheap Google positions only. At $1.50 per 1,000, it's 2.5x DataForSEO Standard.

The catch. It's a big platform, so the console and pricing grid take longer to learn. Local-currency prices on the site are indicative; the contract is in USD.

How to migrate. Use sync mode to get rid of your queue, or async if your code already knows how to wait. Our Bright Data review covers the rest of the platform.

SE Ranking API: keyword and backlink data without DataForSEO

Replaces Labs and Backlinks

Why switch to SE Ranking. If you use DataForSEO for Labs, Keywords Data or Backlinks and the 20% increase stung, SE Ranking is the closest replacement. Its API covers Backlinks, Domain Research, Keyword Research, Website Audit, AI Search visibility and Project Management. You can buy it pay-as-you-go, from $50 for 250K credits with a $50 minimum deposit, much like DataForSEO. It also comes with every SE Ranking subscription (Core at $129 a month, Growth at $279), and there's an API add-on from $149 a month.

Who it's for. Agencies that want keyword and link data for client reports, plus a dashboard to read it, which DataForSEO doesn't offer.

Who it's not for. High-volume raw SERP tracking: raw results pages aren't on its API list. SE Ranking itself admits its default requests per second are lower than DataForSEO's.

The catch. The pricing model changes: credits instead of a per-task price. Rerun the math on your real calls before switching. The API is available during the trial, so use it to measure your consumption.

How to migrate. Map each Labs or Backlinks endpoint to its SE Ranking equivalent, then compare results on ten domains you know well. Our guide to leaving SE Ranking shows its limits on the tool side.

Ahrefs API v3: for backlink reports that hold up

Strongest link index

Why switch to Ahrefs. The backlink coverage gap is the most serious reason to leave, and Ahrefs is the most direct answer. API v3 and the MCP server are included in Lite, Standard and Advanced, with a monthly unit allowance: 200,000 on Lite, 800,000 on Standard, 2,000,000 on Advanced. Enterprise, at $1,499 a month with an annual commitment, gets uncapped API access. Our score, from our full review: 4.2 out of 5, with Lite at $129 a month.

Who it's for. Agencies shipping link audits and tool builders who need reliable backlink history.

Who it's not for. Bulk rank tracking. Every request costs at least 50 units, and more rows cost more. On Lite's 200,000 units, that caps you at 4,000 minimum-cost requests a month.

The catch. Lite also caps each request at 100 rows (250 on Standard, 500 on Advanced). And the subscription bills whether or not you call the API.

How to migrate. Pick fields carefully, since unit cost depends on rows and fields requested. Start with your most-used reports, measure units consumed, then expand. Our Ahrefs review and our guide to leaving Ahrefs fill in the rest.

Semrush API: the pick for teams already paying for Semrush

For existing Semrush teams

Why switch to Semrush. If your team already lives in Semrush, its API saves you from juggling two data sources that disagree. You get Semrush keyword, domain and backlink data. Our score, from our full review: 4.2 out of 5, with the SEO plan at $139 a month ($117.33 billed annually).

Who it's for. In-house SEO teams already on the Business tier who want an internal dashboard fed with the numbers they read every day.

Who it's not for. A developer who left DataForSEO to pay less. This is the priciest and least transparent option here.

The catch. The API is an add-on to the Business tier of the SEO Toolkit, not the entry plans. After the upgrade your unit balance starts at zero: you buy packs of 2, 5, 10 or 20 million units, priced on request. Unused units are lost at renewal. A Backlinks call costs 40 units per row.

How to migrate. Work out your real row consumption before asking for a quote, or you'll buy units that expire. Our Semrush review and Semrush alternatives help you decide if that tier is worth it.

The 7 alternatives side by side

To compare at equal volume, take a realistic rank tracker: 200 keywords, desktop and mobile, checked daily. That's 12,000 results pages a month. On the Standard queue DataForSEO charges $7.20; on Live, $24. Serper burns 12,000 credits, so one $50 Starter pack lasts a bit over four months, inside its 6-month validity. Bright Data comes to $18 pay-as-you-go. SearchApi needs the $100 Production plan, SerpApi the $150 Production plan. At 100,000 pages a month: $60 on DataForSEO Standard, $250 on SearchApi, $725 on SerpApi. One row per API: billing model on the left, entry price and migration on the right.

Migration plan

Moving off DataForSEO in seven steps

Order matters. A botched API migration doesn't break anything visible on day one. It skews your rankings, or it inflates a bill you only see next month.

01

List the endpoints you actually call

Day 1

Pull your request logs and write down every endpoint: organic SERP, Labs, Keywords Data, Backlinks, On-Page. For each one, note monthly volume, mode (Standard, Priority or Live) and depth. Record the real cost too: every API response carries a cost field. Careful, though: the v3 MCP server strips it in default mode, so if an AI agent makes your calls, read the invoice instead.

That table tells you whether you need a SERP API, a keyword and link API, or both.

Time
about an hour
Output
endpoint, volume, cost table
02

Pick one destination per job, not one for everything

Decision

No alternative covers everything DataForSEO does at the same price. SERP work goes to SerpApi, Serper, SearchApi or Bright Data. Keywords and backlinks go to SE Ranking, Ahrefs or Semrush. Nothing forces a full move: plenty of teams keep DataForSEO for one endpoint and leave for another.

Rule
one API per job
03

Wrap calls behind a provider interface

Code

Before you change providers, change your code: one search(keyword, country, language, device) function that always returns the same shape, whatever runs behind it. Maintainers of a self-hosted SEO tool asked for exactly this, a swappable SERP provider, to cut the cost of each check. Rolling back then takes one line.

Benefit
instant rollback
04

Map parameters and response fields

Code

DataForSEO takes a JSON array of tasks (up to 100 per POST) with keyword (700 characters max), location_code (2840 is the United States) and language_code, over HTTP Basic auth. For SerpApi: keyword becomes q, location_code becomes location plus gl, language_code becomes hl, depth becomes start, and auth moves to api_key. In the response, rank_absolute and url become position and link. Other APIs follow the same logic; check exact names in their docs.

Gotcha
numeric location codes vs text
05

Drop the queue, or keep it on purpose

Code

Going synchronous lets you delete the Tasks Ready call, the polling loop and the retry logic for uncollected tasks. Keep a timeout and a simple retry for network errors. If you run overnight batches, you don't have to go sync: SerpApi has async=true, and Bright Data has an async mode where only the send step counts.

Benefit
less code to maintain
06

Run both providers side by side

Week 1

Take 50 to 100 keywords you know well, query both APIs for a few days, and diff the JSON: same URLs at the same positions, same features (People Also Ask, AI Overview). Gaps usually come from location: a country code on one side, a city on the other. Fix that before you cut over.

Sample
50 to 100 keywords
07

Cut over, and keep your DataForSEO balance

Done

Switch all traffic once the gaps are explained. Don't chase a refund on your balance: it never expires, and it covers any endpoint your new API lacks, or a one-off Labs analysis. It's a free safety net until you use it.

Migration pitfalls

What makes a DataForSEO switch go wrong

The same mistakes show up in developer forums and GitHub issues. None of them is really technical. They're math done too fast.

Comparing 10-result prices with 100-result needs

A per-1,000 price means pages of 10 results. If you track the top 100, multiply by 10, on DataForSEO and everywhere else. A $1 per 1,000 alternative then costs $10 per 1,000 keywords tracked 100 deep.

Buying a big pack that expires

Serper credits last 6 months, Semrush units die at renewal, SerpApi quotas reset monthly. The best unit price is worthless if you can't burn the pack in time. Size it on six months of real usage.

Switching SERP APIs when the cost is elsewhere

If your bill comes from Labs or Backlinks, a cheaper SERP API changes nothing. Look at your inventory: the biggest line on the invoice tells you which API to replace.

Forgetting what's expensive on DataForSEO

Before leaving over price, check your settings. Standard instead of Live cuts the price by 3.3x, and dropping a site: operator cuts it by 5x. Only request AI Overview or depth beyond 10 when you use it.

Running batches in Live mode

A mistake often cited by people who stay: Live mode, handy in development, ends up in production by habit. At 100,000 pages a month, that's $200 instead of $60. Keywords Data Live is also capped at 12 requests per minute.

Cutting over without comparing data

Two APIs can return the same page with shifted positions depending on location or device. Skip the parallel run and your ranking history jumps on switch day, and your client thinks they dropped.

FAQ · 8 questions

DataForSEO alternative: FAQ

  • What is the closest alternative to the DataForSEO SERP API?

SerpApi for result richness and direct calls, Serper for the closest price in real time. Neither matches the Standard queue on cost: at $0.60 per 1,000 pages, DataForSEO stays ahead. Our SERP API ranking scores them all on the same criteria.

  • Is there a cheaper alternative to DataForSEO?

Not for queued SERP data. For real-time results, yes: Serper starts at $1 per 1,000 and drops to $0.30, against $2 for DataForSEO Live. For keyword and backlink data, SE Ranking's pay-as-you-go API starts at the same $50 as DataForSEO.

  • Is there a free SEO API?

Not for regular use, but several free tiers cover a prototype. Bright Data gives 5,000 requests a month, Serper 2,500 once, SerpApi 250 a month, SearchApi 100 at signup. DataForSEO's $1 trial credit buys about 1,600 Standard pages.

  • How does DataForSEO pricing work?

Pay-as-you-go, no subscription, with a $50 minimum top-up that never expires. Each API has its own price: $0.0006 per SERP page on Standard, $0.012 per task plus $0.00012 per item for Labs, $0.024 per request plus $0.000036 per row for Backlinks, from $0.00015 per page for On-Page.

  • How much does tracking 100 positions cost now that num=100 is gone?

Ten times the per-page price. On DataForSEO a depth-100 request costs $0.006 on Standard, since every block of 10 is billed. Per-query APIs need 10 calls for 100 positions. If the top 30 is enough for you, the bill drops 70%.

  • Which SERP API works best for an AI agent or MCP server?

A synchronous one: the agent wants an answer in the same turn, not in 5 minutes. Serper for price, SerpApi for engine coverage, Bright Data if the agent scrapes too. If you use DataForSEO's MCP server, know that its default mode hides each call's cost.

  • How do I avoid lock-in to one API provider?

Route every call through one function that returns your own format, and keep a second provider wired to a small sample. When a price jumps 20%, you switch without rewriting your tool. If you automate with Make, our page on the DataForSEO SERP API module shows how to isolate the call in a scenario.

  • Should I leave DataForSEO after the 2026 price increase?

Not necessarily. The 20% increase hits Labs, Backlinks, Keywords Data and On-Page, not the SERP API, and the $100 monthly commitment on Backlinks is gone. If you mostly pull SERPs on the Standard queue, staying is still the cheapest move.
