Kickresume alternatives: which AI resume builder to switch to, and how

Five destinations, one per reason to leave, and a seven-step exit plan.

Short answer: Rezi if you want strong ATS keyword help and never want another subscription ($149 once), FlowCV if you want a bigger free plan (every template, unlimited PDFs, no watermark), VisualCV if you want to see who opens your resume, Reactive Resume if you want a fully free, open source builder, Novoresume for a one-page early-career resume. Before you go, know this: Kickresume doesn't refund the rest of a paid period, and its 14-day guarantee works once per person. We compared the five destinations in this guide and reread their terms in 2026.

The real reasons

Why people leave Kickresume, and what staying costs

Kickresume is a decent AI resume builder: 4.6 out of 5 from its users, a free plan that lets you download your resume, prices shown upfront. People rarely leave angry. They leave because the free plan is narrow, because the subscription outlives the job search, or because the templates fight back. Six reasons, all checked in 2026.

Only four templates on the free plan

Free gets you 4 basic resume templates, 4 cover letter templates and 1 website template. Everything else is paid, and Kickresume says itself the tool stays free only as long as you skip paid customization options. If none of the four fits your field, you pay or you leave. FlowCV, by contrast, opens every template for free.

It renews unless you stop it

Kickresume's terms say auto-renew is switched on when you buy, on monthly and yearly plans alike. Miss the end of your term and you're in for another month, quarter or year. Monthly is $24, quarterly $54 every 3 months, yearly $96. Land the job in February, forget the yearly plan, and $96 leaves your account the following winter.

No prorated refunds

The same terms say subscriptions are non-returnable and no refund is paid on the remaining period. You keep access until the paid term ends. Cancel a yearly plan in month two and you don't get the other ten months back.

A 14-day guarantee you get once

Every paid plan advertises a 14-day money-back guarantee. The terms add that it applies only once to the same user. If you used it during an earlier job hunt, it won't be there this time. Write down your purchase date and decide before day 14.

Templates that stretch your resume

The most specific complaint in reviews is about layout: templates that waste space and push a resume onto an extra page. One user put it plainly: "My 2 page CV always turns to 3 page with all the templates". Others want a button to duplicate a section. US recruiters expect one page early in a career, two at most later, so this matters.

AI copy to rewrite, and a Word export with no layout

The AI writer gets a structure down fast, but its bullets stay generic: you rewrite them with your numbers and tools. On the way out, Kickresume downloads as PDF or .doc. The .doc keeps text only, no graphic elements. That's still the handiest file for moving your content to another tool, as long as you redo the formatting.

The 5 alternatives

Rezi: ATS-focused, and you can pay once

No subscription

Why switch to Rezi. If the renewing charge is what pushed you out, Rezi has the cleanest answer on the market: Lifetime at $149, paid once. No renewal, nothing to cancel, and Pro's features minus the monthly expert review. Rezi is also built around applicant tracking systems (ATS), the software large employers use to filter resumes before a person reads them. It helps you mirror the job post's keywords in a layout that software parses cleanly.

Who it's for. Candidates applying through big-company portals, and anyone who changes jobs every two or three years.

Who it's not for. Designers and creatives who want a visual resume: the templates are plain on purpose.

Its limit. The free plan is tight: 1 resume, 1 AI interview, 3 PDF downloads. Pro costs $29 a month, more than Kickresume's monthly plan. Lifetime doesn't include the monthly expert review, which stays a Pro perk.

How to switch. Rezi lets you start from scratch or upload your current resume. Do the math first: $149 is barely more than 6 months of Kickresume monthly ($144). Save your 3 free PDFs for final versions.

FlowCV: the most generous free plan

Free

Why switch to FlowCV. Kickresume gives you 4 templates for free; FlowCV gives you all of them, with full design control. PDF downloads are unlimited, there's no watermark, and no card is asked for. There's no trial that flips into a subscription. On Trustpilot FlowCV sits at 4.9 out of 5 across nearly 1,800 reviews, and one user named the thing missing elsewhere: "there is no paywall at the end."

Who it's for. Anyone who needs one polished resume and a cover letter, free, with real layout choice.

Who it's not for. People juggling several resume versions for different roles: free stops at 1 resume and 1 letter.

Its limit. AI writing and translation tools are on Pro, at $5 a month billed yearly ($60 a year). Pro renews automatically, like Kickresume, so set a reminder. The rare complaints mention slow loading.

How to switch. FlowCV imports a PDF, a DOCX, an image or pasted text. The free plan includes 3 content imports: import your Kickresume PDF once, then fix things by hand. Pro costs $36 a year less than Kickresume yearly.

VisualCV: see who opens your resume

Analytics

Why switch to VisualCV. Kickresume tells you nothing once a resume leaves your hands. VisualCV Pro adds resume performance analytics and shareable resume links, so you can see whether the link you sent got opened. It also comes with 30+ templates, a cover letter builder and a personal website.

Who it's for. Candidates who send resumes by link to recruiters and hiring managers, and want a signal back.

Who it's not for. Anyone who only uploads PDFs to job portals: analytics don't follow a file.

Its limit. The free plan lets you try the templates and build your first resume, but unlimited PDF downloads and the ATS-friendly template are on Pro. Pro is $16 a month billed quarterly. The upside: a 30-day refund window if you email support, twice as long as Kickresume's 14 days.

How to switch. VisualCV doesn't advertise a resume import on its pricing page, so paste section by section from your Kickresume .doc export. Build everything during your first week on Pro so the 30-day refund is still open if it doesn't fit.

Reactive Resume: free, open source, your data

Open source

Why switch to Reactive Resume. Every feature is free, and there's no paid tier: 18 templates, PDF and Word downloads, an ATS checker, cover letters and a job tracker. The code is open source under the MIT license. Best of all, you export your resume as JSON, a data file you can import again later, so you're never locked in again.

Who it's for. Comfortable-with-tech candidates, and anyone done with paying for a resume.

Who it's not for. People who want AI that works out of the box.

Its limit. AI is optional and needs your own API key (OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Gemini, OpenRouter or Ollama). Without one, nothing goes to an AI service, and nothing gets written for you either. It runs on donations, so there's no commercial support.

How to switch. Reactive Resume imports a PDF, a LinkedIn data export or a JSON Resume file. Import your Kickresume PDF, check each section, then export a JSON copy right away. It also ships as a Docker image if you want to self-host. On r/selfhosted the launch thread called it "100% free, forever!"

Novoresume: a free Basic plan for a one-page resume

Early career

Why switch to Novoresume. Basic is free with no time limit and no card, with 8 templates and 30 color themes, twice the templates of Kickresume's free plan. For a one-page resume, it's often enough.

Who it's for. Students, recent grads and early-career candidates whose resume fits on one page.

Who it's not for. A ten-year career that needs two pages, or anyone counting on lots of free AI.

Its limit. Basic caps you at 1 one-page resume, 8 templates, 30 themes and 2 AI credits a month, with a Novoresume logo on the PDF. The pricing page doesn't show Pro amounts, so we don't compare Pro here.

How to switch. Paste your content from the Kickresume .doc, section by section. One page forces you to cut, which is rarely a bad thing. Then run the result through the ATS checker included in Basic.

Exit plan

Leaving Kickresume in seven steps

Order matters. Each step protects something: your money, your content, your layout and the applications you already sent.

01

Find your renewal date

Day 1

Open your account and write down your plan (monthly, quarterly, yearly) and when the current term ends. Auto-renew is on by default. Cancel before that date: after it, the new term is due and not refundable.

If you paid less than 14 days ago and have never used the guarantee, ask for it now.

Risk
one more term charged
02

Download every resume and letter as PDF

Before canceling

Grab every version, including ones built on paid templates, while your plan is active. Name each file by role and year, like "resume-project-manager-2026.pdf". They're your record of what each employer received.

Format
PDF, layout kept
03

Export a .doc too, for the text

Kickresume's .doc keeps text only, no graphic elements. That's exactly what you want for pasting or importing elsewhere without parsing errors. Keep it next to the PDF.

Format
.doc, text only
04

Import into the new tool, then reread every section

Critical

FlowCV and Reactive Resume import a PDF, Rezi takes an upload. For VisualCV and Novoresume, paste from the .doc. After any import, check every date and employer name: that's where imports slip most, especially from two-column templates.

Risk
wrong dates or employers
05

Pick an ATS-friendly layout

For online applications at large employers, go single column, standard section headings (Experience, Education, Skills) and no text inside images. Two-column layouts split opinion: some newer parsers read them fine, others interleave the columns. One column carries no risk.

Simple rule
one column for portals
06

Cancel before the date and keep proof

Before the date

Cancel from your account and screenshot the confirmation. If anything's unclear, email support. You keep access until the paid term ends.

Refund
none on the remaining term
07

Close the account or leave it on free

You can close your account any time. Otherwise it stays on free and is deleted automatically after 5 years without a login. If you're a student with ISIC, ITIC or UNiDAYS, Kickresume's subscription is free for you: check that before leaving, it may change your mind.

Exit pitfalls

What makes a Kickresume switch go wrong

The same mistakes show up in reviews and forums. None is technical. They're things people forget, and each one costs more than the fifteen minutes it takes to avoid.

Canceling after the date

One day late means a whole extra term. On yearly, that's $96. Set a reminder a week before your term ends.

Counting on a guarantee you already used

The 14-day guarantee works once per user. A second job hunt two years later doesn't reset it.

Leaving without PDFs of paid templates

Resumes built on paid templates download while you're paying. After that you're back to the 4 free ones. Download everything before you cancel.

Switching to a tool with the same trap

Several resume builders sell a cheap short trial that turns into a charge every 4 weeks, which is 13 charges a year, not 12. Read the renewal line on the checkout screen. Rezi Lifetime is billed once.

Keeping the AI copy as is

Recruiters spot generic bullets fast. Use the switch to rewrite in your own words: one number, one tool, one result per line. If you want a general AI assistant for rewording, read our ChatGPT review.

FAQ · 9 questions

Kickresume alternative FAQ

  • What's the best free alternative to Kickresume?

FlowCV for one polished resume: every template, unlimited PDFs, no watermark. Reactive Resume if you want everything free with no paid tier and a JSON export. Our best AI resume builder ranking compares more options.

  • Is Kickresume actually free?

Mostly: 4 resume templates, 4 cover letter templates and unlimited downloads, as long as you stick to free options. Other templates and the full AI are paid, from $8 a month billed yearly.

  • How do I cancel my Kickresume subscription?

Cancel from your account before the current term ends and keep the confirmation. Auto-renew is on by default and the rest of a term isn't refunded. You keep access until the end date.

  • Does Kickresume give refunds?

Each plan carries a 14-day money-back guarantee, but it applies once per user. Outside it, the terms rule out refunds, including on the remaining period.

  • Can I get my Kickresume resume as a Word file?

Yes, as .doc, but without graphic elements: only the text comes along. That's the right file for moving content into another builder. Download the PDF too if you want the layout.

  • Is there an AI resume builder with no subscription?

Yes. Rezi Lifetime costs $149 once with Pro's features, minus the monthly expert review. Reactive Resume is free, with AI through your own API key.

  • Can ChatGPT replace an AI resume builder?

For the writing, partly: it rewords bullets and tailors a summary to a job post. It won't lay out your resume. The cheapest combo is drafting with ChatGPT and formatting in FlowCV or Reactive Resume. ChatGPT Plus is $20 a month and the free tier often does the job. See our ChatGPT review.

  • Should my resume be one or two columns for ATS?

One column for big-company portals: it parses everywhere. Some newer systems read two columns correctly, others mix up sections. Keep the designed version for resumes you hand to a person directly.

  • Is Canva a good Kickresume alternative?

For a visual resume you send by hand, yes. For online applications, its column and block layouts parse less reliably. If you're leaving Canva too, read our guide to switching from Canva.
