What changes when Claude can query market data
Alpha Vantage provides financial market data: prices for stocks, ETFs, funds, options, currencies and commodities, company fundamentals, economic indicators and more than 50 technical indicators. Connected to Claude, it lets you ask a market question in plain words; Claude picks the right data series among 126 tools, reads the numbers and answers with a table, a summary or a chart.
A week of prices, explained. Ask for last week's data on a stock: Claude calls TIME_SERIES_DAILY, the tool the publisher's own example uses for IBM, and comments on the move instead of handing you raw figures.
Technical analysis without a terminal. Hourly prices from TIME_SERIES_INTRADAY plus RSI give Claude what it needs to plot both and tell you where the stock stands.
Fundamentals in one question. EARNINGS, INCOME_STATEMENT and COMPANY_OVERVIEW let Claude compare reported results with estimates or walk you through a company's accounts.
What Claude will not do here: by default the directory sheet only exposes reading. No tool places an order, manages a portfolio or alerts you when a price crosses a level. Two tools, CRYPTO_INTRADAY and EARNINGS_ESTIMATES, have no official description. Background watching of that kind is an automation tool's job, a different trade; the Integrations hub covers it.
Six words before you connect
The vocabulary you will meet with Claude and Alpha Vantage.
- Connector
- The link you set up once between Claude and an outside service, so Claude can use it while it answers you.
- Tool
- One named capability a connector gives Claude. Claude picks the ones it needs; here each tool matches one Alpha Vantage data series.
- Authorization
- The service's own sign-in step. For Alpha Vantage, it is a page where you enter your API key and click Authorize Access.
- Approval
- The confirmation Claude waits for before going ahead with something that changes an account, shown in the conversation when it matters.
- API key
- The personal code Alpha Vantage gives you to access its data. The connector asks for it once, when you connect.
- MCP
- The shared standard behind connectors: it is what lets an assistant like Claude query an outside service such as Alpha Vantage.
Connect Alpha Vantage to Claude in three steps
- 01
Find Alpha Vantage in Claude
Open Claude's settings, go to Customize, then Connectors, and look for Alpha Vantage in the list. On a Team or Enterprise workspace, an Owner or Primary Owner enables the connector before members can sign in.
- 02
Start the connection
Click Connect on its row and follow the window Alpha Vantage opens. If the link breaks, or to use a different key, Disconnect and connect again, as the publisher suggests.
- 03
Authorize with your key
On Alpha Vantage's authorization page, enter your API key and confirm with Authorize Access. That page belongs to Alpha Vantage, not to Claude, and it decides what the access covers.
The 126 Alpha Vantage tools, by what they do
Alpha Vantage MCP Server gives Claude 126 tools: 124 that read your account, 0 that change something in it, and 2 no official source describes.
Two groups: what Claude reads, and what no official source describes. Each documented tool matches one Alpha Vantage data series; names stay as Claude shows them.

Undocumented (2)
2 toolsThe directory publishes these names and nothing else. No official text says what they return, so this page does not guess.
CRYPTO_INTRADAY
This name sits on the directory sheet, but no official source read for this page describes it; the publisher's own tool table does not include it.
EARNINGS_ESTIMATES
Listed on the directory sheet and documented by no official source read for this page, this tool has no description anywhere we could find.
What Claude asks before acting
By default, Claude stops and asks for your confirmation before any action it carries out on an account for you. Every documented Alpha Vantage tool only reads, and no source says whether a confirmation appears for any of the 126.
On a Team or Enterprise workspace, owners decide whether members may let certain actions through without being asked each time. They can also restrict what a connector may do for the whole organisation, and nobody overrides that from a personal account. Claude works with the access of the person who connected and nothing beyond it: the data your Alpha Vantage key unlocks is the data Claude can read.
Which plans include it
None of the 819 sheets in the official directory shows plan availability. That information, connector by connector, is published nowhere: a real gap in the catalogue.
The general rule is public: remote connectors are open to all users on Claude, Cowork, Claude Desktop and mobile. On Team and Enterprise, an Owner or Primary Owner enables the connector for the organisation before members can connect. The publisher states its own view in its documentation, set against Anthropic's rule in the limits below. For the current state, check the connector's sheet in the directory.
Where this connector stops
A connector is not an automation. Claude calls these tools while it answers you: nothing starts when a price crosses a level or a report comes out.
A tool list that only reads is an observed floor, not a guarantee: an administrator can open actions shown on no public sheet. The verification badge is not a security audit, and Anthropic writes on each sheet that it does not choose a publisher's tools. Everything here comes from Alpha Vantage's documentation and the directory sheet; no Claude help article covers this connector. For a connector whose tools write into an account, compare with the Claude activecampaign connector.
Which Claude plans can use the Alpha Vantage connector?
- Claude help center, general connector rule ↗September 2026Remote connectors are open to all users; on Team and Enterprise, an Owner enables each one first.
- Alpha Vantage documentation ↗undated, read October 2026The publisher lists any free or paid Claude account as the requirement.
What this page followsBoth point the same way, but they are not the same kind of statement: Anthropic's rule covers every connector, while the publisher speaks only for its own. Neither is out of date. Neither settles it for your account either: check the connector's sheet in the directory while signed in.
