Overview

What changes for your hiring team

Instead of clicking through the pipeline board, candidate tabs and your task inbox, you ask Claude in plain words. It picks the right Ashby tool, pulls the profile, the stage counts or your pending scorecards, and answers in the conversation. Four tools go further and change records, one of them only after you approve a draft.

Walk into every interview prepared. get_upcoming_interviews lists your week, then get_interview_details hands you the candidate's background, the panel and the hiring team for the next slot. No more opening three tabs in the lobby.

Read the pipeline without building a report. get_job_pipeline counts people per stage and compares several jobs, and filter_records answers pointed questions like how many offers are still out this month.

Log decisions while they are fresh. After a debrief, change_application_stage moves the finalist and add_note_to_candidate drafts the summary note you then approve.

What it will not do: nothing runs on its own. No tool wakes up when a candidate applies or a scorecard lands; Claude acts only while you talk to it. It never sees more than your Ashby role allows, and your own scorecards are the only ones it can pull. For background jobs triggered by ATS events, an automation tool is the right fit; the Integrations hub gathers that side.

Vocabulary

The vocabulary in one minute

Five words you will meet while plugging Ashby in.

Connector
The link you set up once between Claude and an account you already have, so Claude can work in it while it answers you.
Tool
One named action the connector opens to Claude. Claude picks the ones it needs on its own; the directory lists them by name.
Authorization
The sign-in screen of the service itself, where you hand Claude the access it will use. Given once per person, revocable anytime.
Approval
The confirmation Claude waits for before it finishes an action that changes your account, shown right in the conversation.
MCP
The shared standard connectors are built on: it is what lets an assistant like Claude talk to an outside service such as Ashby.
Connect

Connect Ashby to Claude in three steps

  1. 01

    Find Ashby in Claude

In Claude's settings, open Customize, then Connectors, and look for Ashby in the list. On a Team or Enterprise workspace, an Owner or Primary Owner has to enable the connector first so each member can sign in.

  2. 02

    Start the connection

Click Connect on the Ashby row, then log in to Ashby in the window Ashby opens on its own side. If the link ever breaks later, hit Disconnect and connect again.

  3. 03

    Read the authorization screen

Go through Ashby's access screen before you approve it. That screen belongs to the service, not to Claude, and it sets what the access covers. You can also withdraw that access later from the Ashby side.

describe_object_fields

Works backstage: before a filtered search, Claude uses it to learn which fields a given record type can be filtered on. You never call it yourself, and it shows you nothing on its own.

When it helps
you ask for offers by status and Claude needs to know that the offer record carries such a field before it filters.
Watch out
if a filter comes back empty, the field you had in mind may simply not exist on that record type.

Sourcedocs.ashbyhq.com · July 30, 2026 ↗

filter_records

Pulls every record that matches your criteria across candidates, applications, jobs, postings, openings, scheduled interviews and offers. It can also return a bare count instead of the full list.

When it helps
a VP asks how many people sit in the onsite stage for the Account Executive role, and a number is enough.
Watch out
Ashby bills this tool 2 units against the per-minute budget, twice the usual cost.

Sourcedocs.ashbyhq.com · July 30, 2026 ↗

search_records_by_name

Turns a name you type into the right Ashby record: a candidate, a job, an application or an email template. Most conversations start here, because the other tools need the record it finds.

When it helps
you type a candidate's full name and want Claude to open the correct profile rather than a namesake.
Watch out
it only resolves names; to narrow by stage or date, Claude switches to the filtered search.

Sourcedocs.ashbyhq.com · July 30, 2026 ↗

get_record_details

Fetches the complete content of records Claude has already located, for jobs, postings, applications, email templates, openings, scheduled interviews and offers. Think of it as the second step after a search.

When it helps
you found the Senior Designer opening and now want its full description and hiring team in the chat.
Watch out
candidate profiles are not on its list; that job belongs to get_candidate.

Sourcedocs.ashbyhq.com · July 30, 2026 ↗

get_candidate

Opens a candidate's file in depth: resume, interview feedback, emails, texts, notes, interview transcripts, referrals, follow-ups and form submissions. Claude can then summarize or search inside all of it.

When it helps
a hiring manager asks whether anyone raised relocation in past conversations with a finalist.
Watch out
what Claude reads here stops at what your own Ashby role lets you open.

Sourcedocs.ashbyhq.com · July 30, 2026 ↗

get_interview_plan

Lays out the sequence of stages a candidate goes through for one job or one application, from first screen to the last step your team configured.

When it helps
a new interviewer joins the loop and wants to know which round comes after the technical exercise.
Watch out
it shows the stages; advancing a candidate is a job for another tool in the list.

Sourcedocs.ashbyhq.com · July 30, 2026 ↗

get_interview_details

Builds a prep sheet for one specific interview: who the candidate is, a résumé summary, who sits on the panel and who leads hiring. Ashby suggests calling it just before you walk in.

When it helps
you have ten minutes between two meetings and want the essentials on your next interviewee.
Watch out
it covers one interview at a time; for the week ahead, use the upcoming list instead.

Sourcedocs.ashbyhq.com · July 30, 2026 ↗

get_job_pipeline

Counts the candidates sitting at each stage of a job's pipeline, and can line several jobs up side by side for comparison.

When it helps
the weekly recruiting sync needs a quick read on where the engineering roles are stalling.
Watch out
you get counts per stage, not the people behind them; ask for names separately.

Sourcedocs.ashbyhq.com · July 30, 2026 ↗

get_pending_tasks

Gathers what Ashby is waiting on from you: scorecards you still owe, approvals, follow-ups, candidate reviews and survey requests.

When it helps
Monday morning, before you open anything else, you ask Claude what you need to clear today.
Watch out
the list is yours alone; it does not show what a colleague still has pending.

Sourcedocs.ashbyhq.com · July 30, 2026 ↗

get_submitted_feedback

Brings back the scorecard feedback you personally submitted on a candidate or an interview, so you can reread what you wrote.

When it helps
a debrief starts in five minutes and you no longer remember how you rated the case study.
Watch out
other interviewers' scorecards never appear here, only yours.

Sourcedocs.ashbyhq.com · July 30, 2026 ↗

get_upcoming_interviews

Lists the interviews coming up on your calendar with the candidate's name, the job title, the time slot and the meeting link.

When it helps
you plan your week and want every interview you are scheduled on in one reply.
Watch out
it lists your own interviews; the prep content for each sits in the briefing tool.

Sourcedocs.ashbyhq.com · July 30, 2026 ↗

search_product_docs

Answers how-to questions about Ashby itself by searching the product documentation, and returns the answer with links to the matching articles.

When it helps
you want to set up an approval chain for offers and have no idea which admin screen holds it.
Watch out
it reads Ashby's public help, not your account data.

What Claude changes (4)

4 tools

Four tools that write to Ashby. Only the note tool has a documented confirmation step.

add_note_to_candidate

Asks you first

Writes a note on a candidate's profile, or a reply under an existing note, as a draft rather than a saved entry.

What Claude asks for
Ashby documents a confirmation step here: the note stays a draft until you approve it, and only then is it saved.
When it helps
right after a phone screen, you dictate your impressions and let Claude format them for the profile.

Sourcedocs.ashbyhq.com · July 30, 2026 ↗

change_application_stage

Approval: see the rule

Shifts a candidate's application to another stage of that job's interview process, the same move you would drag on the pipeline board.

What Claude asks for
no source describes a confirmation specific to this tool; the general approvals rule further down applies.
When it helps
the panel agreed on a finalist during the debrief and you want the stage to reflect it before you forget.

Sourcedocs.ashbyhq.com · July 30, 2026 ↗

consider_candidate_for_job

Approval: see the rule

Puts an existing candidate into consideration for a job by opening a new application at the very first stage of that job's process.

What Claude asks for
nothing specific is documented for this tool, so the default rule in the approvals section covers it.
When it helps
a strong runner-up for one role looks like a fit for a similar opening in another team.
Watch out
the new application always starts at stage one, whatever progress the candidate made elsewhere.

Sourcedocs.ashbyhq.com · July 30, 2026 ↗

create_candidate

Approval: see the rule

Adds a brand-new person to Ashby with a name and contact details, ready to be attached to a job afterwards.

What Claude asks for
no confirmation is described for this one in particular; see the general approvals rule below.
When it helps
a referral lands in your inbox and you want the person in the ATS before the end of the call.

Approvals

What Claude asks before acting

By default, Claude stops and asks for your go-ahead before any action it takes on an account for you. The request shows up in the conversation, at the moment it matters.

On a Team or Enterprise workspace, owners decide whether a member may let some actions through without being asked every time. They can also cap what a connector may do for the whole organization, keeping reads open and closing writes, for instance. That setting applies to everyone and no one overrides it from their own account. And Claude works with your rights, nothing more: a candidate your Ashby role hides stays hidden in the chat.

Plans

Which plans this is available on

None of the 819 sheets in the official directory shows availability per plan. The answer, connector by connector, is not published anywhere: that is a real gap in the catalogue.

The general rule is published: remote connectors are open to all users on Claude, Cowork, Claude Desktop and mobile. On Team and Enterprise, an Owner or Primary Owner enables the connector for the organization before each member can sign in. For the current state, check the Ashby sheet in the official directory, the only place that shows it.

Limits

Where this connector stops

A connector is not an automation. Claude calls these tools while it answers you: nothing starts when a candidate applies, an interview ends or an offer is signed.

This connector is documented only by its publisher: no Claude help article covers it, so everything here comes from Ashby's own page, which still labels the server a beta. The tool list is an observed floor, not a promise; Ashby says it keeps adding tools, write actions included. The partner badge in the directory is not a security audit either, and Anthropic states on every sheet that it does not pick the tools a publisher exposes nor guarantee how they behave. For another people-side connector, see the Claude bamboohr connector.

FAQ

Claude Ashby connector: frequent questions

01What can Claude do with the Ashby connector?
Claude can search and read your Ashby recruiting data and make a few changes from the conversation. Its 16 tools find candidates, jobs and applications by name or by criteria, open full candidate profiles, show the stages of an interview plan, count candidates per pipeline stage, list your upcoming interviews and pending tasks, and answer how-to questions from Ashby's help. Four of them write: they create a candidate, draft a note, move an application to another stage, or add a candidate to a job.
02Can Claude create or change records in Ashby?
Yes, four documented tools write to Ashby. One creates a new candidate with name and contact details, one drafts a note or a reply on a profile, one moves an application to a different stage, and one opens a new application for a candidate on another job, always at the first stage. Ashby says more write actions will come over time. Everything else in the list only reads, and nothing changes in the ATS unless you ask Claude to do it.
03Does Claude ask before acting in Ashby?
By default, yes: Claude asks for confirmation before each action it takes on an account for you. On top of that, Ashby documents one specific check: a note stays a draft until you confirm it. For creating a candidate, moving a stage or adding someone to a job, no source describes a separate confirmation, so the default rule applies. Owners of a Team or Enterprise workspace decide whether members can skip some of these requests.
04Which Claude plans is the Ashby connector available on?
No official source publishes plan availability connector by connector, and no directory sheet shows it. The general rule says remote connectors are open to all users on Claude, Cowork, Claude Desktop and mobile, with an Owner enabling each connector first on Team and Enterprise. On the Ashby side, the publisher adds that Analytics-only organizations cannot use it. The Ashby sheet in the official directory remains the only place showing the current state for your account.
05Does Claude see every candidate in our Ashby account?
No, Claude works with your rights and nothing more. Ashby authenticates every person individually through their own OAuth sign-in, and the connector only returns what that person already sees in Ashby. A recruiter who is not on a hiring process cannot query its candidates through Claude. Beyond that, a Claude workspace owner can restrict what the connector may do for the whole organization, and members cannot lift that restriction themselves.
06Why does Claude hit a rate limit with Ashby?
Because Ashby caps usage per minute, on its own side rather than on Claude's. The publisher sets 120 requests per minute per token and 120 tool units per minute for each user and organization pair. Most tools cost one unit per call, while the filtered search costs two, so a long run of filtered counts reaches the ceiling faster. If you see the error, wait a moment for the minute to pass and try again.
07Claude or an automation tool for Ashby?
They answer different needs, so it depends on the task. Claude works inside a conversation: you ask, it looks up, summarizes or updates, and nothing else happens once you stop typing. It does not react on its own when someone applies or when a stage changes. For a process that runs in the background on an ATS event, an automation tool does that job. For questions, interview prep and quick edits on demand, the connector is the better fit.
