Overview

What the Creatomate Zapier integration actually does

Creatomate turns templates into videos, banners and GIFs. Zapier is the glue between apps: it watches for an event in one tool and does something in another, with no code. Plug the two together and a new record somewhere else becomes a finished render, or a finished render becomes a message, a file or a row somewhere else.

Three results show up again and again. First, one asset per new record: a listing lands in Airtable, Create Single Render fills your template with its details, and the video exists before anyone opens an editor. Second, a batch of variants in one go: Create Multiple Renders produces several videos, images or GIFs from a single run, handy when the same promo needs more than one cut. Third, a handoff the moment the file is ready: New Render starts a Zap as soon as Creatomate has generated something, so the next app gets told without a person checking.

Now the limits. Zapier offers no search step for Creatomate, so a Zap can't look up a render made last week and reuse it. There's a single trigger, and it only fires on finished renders. And Zapier doesn't design anything: the template itself is built in Creatomate first. A Zap only feeds it values.

Comparing tools? The Creatomate Make integration covers the same app on another platform, and Make vs Zapier puts the two side by side.

Vocabulary

Zapier words in one minute

Seven terms come back on this page. Here they are in plain English, once.

Zap
The automation you build on Zapier: one trigger, then one or more actions that run each time that event happens.
Trigger
The event that starts the Zap. Once the Zap is switched on, Zapier sits and waits for it to happen.
Action
The work the Zap does after it starts: the step that creates, sends or moves something on your behalf.
Task
What Zapier bills you for. One action that completes successfully equals one task on your monthly count.
Polling vs instant
A polling trigger gets checked on a timer. An instant trigger is reported by the app itself the moment the event occurs.
Filter
A checkpoint after New Render: only the renders whose data passes your rule move on to the next apps, the rest end the run there.
Connection
Your Creatomate account linked to Zapier once, then reused by every step in every Zap that touches Creatomate.
Cost

What a Creatomate Zap really costs

Creatomate isn't a premium app on Zapier, so it works on the free plan. The bill is counted in tasks, not in renders watched.

  • Premium appNo, available on the free plan
  • Free plan100 tasks a month, two-step Zaps only
  • Trigger cost0 tasks
  • New RenderInstant, ignores the interval grid

The trigger never costs a task, however many renders it reports. Each action that succeeds counts once, so a Zap with two actions burns two tasks per run, three actions burn three, and a failed action isn't charged at all. The free plan gives 100 tasks a month and unlimited Zaps, but only two-step ones: one trigger, one action. Add a filter or a second action and the Zap becomes multi-step, which needs a paid plan. A few Zapier actions take more than one task, so the run history is worth a look.

Connect

Connect Creatomate to Zapier in 3 steps

  1. 01

    Open your connections

In your Zapier account, go to the Apps page and click + Add connection. You need an existing Creatomate account before this works, Zapier can't create one for you.

  2. 02

    Pick Creatomate

Type Creatomate in the search box of the dialog, select it in the list, then click Add connection. A new tab opens on the Creatomate side for the sign-in.

  3. 03

    Sign in and grant access

Log into Creatomate in that tab and allow Zapier to use the account. From then on, every Zap step that touches Creatomate reuses this connection, so you set it up once.

First Zap

Your first Zap: log and announce every finished listing video

GoalA real estate team renders listing videos in Creatomate. Each finished one is logged in Airtable and announced in Slack, so agents know it's ready to send.

  1. 01

    Create the Zap

Start a new Zap, pick Creatomate as the app and New Render as the event, then select the Creatomate connection set up earlier.

  2. 02

    Test the trigger

Run the test. Zapier brings back the three most recent renders of your account, so pick a real one and use what it holds for the next steps.

  3. 03

    Add the filter

From the plus icon, add a Filter. Point it at a value you spotted in the test that only listing videos carry, pick a text rule, and type that value.

  4. 04

    Add Airtable and Slack

Add Airtable with Create Record to log the render in your listings table, then Slack with Send Channel Message to tell the agents.

  5. 05

    Test, then publish

Test each action once and check the new row and the message. Happy with both? Hit Publish. With a filter and two actions, this Zap runs on a paid plan and costs two tasks per video.

Triggers

The Creatomate trigger

1 event starts a Zap when something happens in Creatomate, and one of them is instant: the app calls Zapier straight away, whatever your plan.

1

New Render

Instant trigger

In Zapier“Triggers when a new video, image or GIF has been generated.”

Starts your Zap each time Creatomate finishes generating a video, image or GIF. This is the only trigger Creatomate offers on Zapier, and it waits for the finished file, not for the request that started it.

How it fires
the app tells Zapier the moment it happens, so the Zap starts right away, whatever your plan
When to use it
you want a Slack ping, a Trello card or a new Airtable row the moment a client video is done.
Watch out
never point a Zap built on this trigger at a Creatomate render action, or every finished render orders a new one and your tasks drain in a loop.
Actions

Creatomate actions

Creatomate gives you 2 actions. For each one: what it does for you, when to reach for it, and what to watch out for.

1

Create Single Render

Action

In Zapier“Creates one video, image or GIF”

Produces one video, image or GIF from the template you pick, with the values of the step before plugged into its fields.

When to use it
one record should give exactly one asset, like a social clip per new blog post.
Watch out
the Template field is required, so the template has to exist in Creatomate before you build the step.
2

Create Multiple Renders

Action

In Zapier“Creates multiple videos, images or GIFs”

Generates several videos, images or GIFs in a single run instead of one, from the same Zap step.

When to use it
a product launch needs more than one visual at once, and one step is easier to maintain than a chain of single-render steps.
Watch out
test it with a real record first and check every file it returns before you publish.
When it breaks

When a Creatomate Zap breaks

Zapier links no help article to Creatomate, so the traps below are the general Zapier ones, applied to rendering.

Most broken render Zaps fail for one of four reasons. If none fits, the Zapier troubleshooting page is the next stop.

  • Old records never get rendered

A Zap only reacts to what happens after you switch it on. Listings already sitting in your table won't produce a video; moving that backlog is a separate job.
  • The render loop

A Zap that starts on New Render and then creates a render sets itself off again and again. Each lap costs a task, and the monthly count disappears fast.
  • A big import gets held back

When a trigger suddenly sends a huge batch, after a bulk import or a migration, Zapier's flood protection can hold those runs back instead of firing them all.
  • The filter never passes

Filter rules are typed. A text rule only reads text and a number rule only reads numbers, so picking the wrong kind stops every run at the filter.

FAQ

Creatomate and Zapier: common questions

01Is the Creatomate Zapier integration free?
Yes, on the Zapier side. Creatomate isn't a premium app, so it runs on the free plan. That plan gives you 100 tasks a month and unlimited Zaps, but each Zap is capped at two steps: one trigger and one action. A Zap that adds a filter or a second action becomes multi-step and requires a paid plan. Whatever Creatomate charges for rendering on its own side is a separate matter, and this page doesn't cover it.
02How many tasks does a Creatomate Zap use?
Only successful actions count. The New Render trigger costs nothing, however often it fires. Each Create Single Render or Create Multiple Renders step that goes through takes one task, so a Zap with two actions takes two per run. An action that fails isn't charged. A Zap that renders and then logs the file in a sheet therefore costs two tasks each time it runs. A few actions on Zapier do take more than one task, so check the run history after your first tests.
03Does New Render fire in real time?
Yes. New Render is an instant trigger: Creatomate reports each finished render to Zapier itself, the moment it happens. It doesn't wait for a timer, so the plan interval grid, which goes from 15 minutes on Free down to 1 minute on Team and Enterprise, doesn't apply. That holds even on the free plan. In the editor, a Zap built on an instant trigger shows a lightning bolt next to it, which is a quick way to check.
04What do you need to connect Creatomate?
An existing Creatomate account and a Zapier account. The connection goes through the Apps page: click + Add connection, search Creatomate, click Add connection, sign in to Creatomate in the tab that opens and allow Zapier access. After that, every Zap reuses the same connection. One practical extra: have at least one template saved in Creatomate, because the Create Single Render action requires a template and has nothing to offer otherwise.
05Why does a Creatomate Zap keep running on its own?
Almost always because of a loop. If a Zap starts on New Render and its action creates another render, that new render fires the trigger again, which creates another one, and so on. Every lap burns a task, so the monthly count can empty quickly. Keep render-creating Zaps on a trigger from another app, like a new record or a new form entry, and use New Render only for what happens after the file is ready.
06What if the Creatomate action you want isn't there?
Then Zapier doesn't offer it today. The integration has one trigger, New Render, and two actions, Create Single Render and Create Multiple Renders, with no search step. So a Zap can't look up an older render or list templates. The usual workaround is to keep the missing part on the Creatomate side, for instance by preparing the right template in advance, and let the Zap only fill it. If that isn't enough, another automation platform may expose different operations for the same app.
07Zapier, Make or n8n for Creatomate?
It depends on your criteria, not on a winner. If your volume fits in 100 tasks a month and each Zap needs only a trigger and one action, Zapier's free plan handles Creatomate without a paid upgrade. If you need instant handoff when a render finishes, Zapier's New Render trigger does that. If you need to look up existing renders, Zapier has no search step for this app, so check what the other platforms expose before choosing. Compare the operations each one lists for Creatomate against your own scenario.
