What the Encharge Zapier integration actually does for you
Encharge runs marketing automation for SaaS companies: people, tags and the email journeys built on them. Through Zapier, a new person, a tag change, an update or an unsubscribe in Encharge can start an automation, and other apps can add, tag, unsubscribe or archive people in Encharge in return.
Three outcomes cover most setups. Lifecycle tags that keep up: Tag Added to Person sees a customer tag land, Remove Tag clears the trial one. People who arrive from anywhere: a signup in another tool feeds Add or Update Person, so Encharge always holds the contact. Unsubscribes that travel: Person Unsubscribed tells your other tools the moment someone opts out.
What Zapier does not do here: there is no search, so a Zap cannot look a person up before acting, and every action works from an email address instead, so that address has to travel with the Zap from its first step. Nothing that happened before the Zap went live is picked up. And Updated Person fires on every change, which makes it a poor starting point for anything that creates records.
If you are comparing platforms, the Make vs Zapier comparison is there if you are still choosing, and the Zapier training is there when your team wants to build these Zaps themselves.
Zapier words, in one minute
Seven terms keep coming back. Here they are once, in plain English.
- Zap
- The automation you build on Zapier: one starting event, then one or more steps that run every time that event happens.
- Trigger
- The event that starts the Zap, such as a new person in Encharge. Once the Zap is on, Zapier waits for it.
- Action
- What the Zap does once it has started: the step that adds, tags or unsubscribes someone for you.
- Task
- The unit Zapier bills. Each action that completes successfully is one task, and your plan counts those.
- Polling vs instant
- Polling means Zapier checks an app on a timer. Instant means the app calls Zapier itself. All five Encharge triggers are instant.
- Filter
- A step that lets the Zap go on only when what arrived meets a condition you set, and stops it otherwise.
- Connection
- Your Encharge account linked to Zapier once, then reused by every Encharge step in every Zap you build.
What an Encharge Zap really costs
Triggers are free. Zapier never bills for the event that starts a Zap, so five triggers listening around the clock cost nothing on their own.
- Free plan100 tasks a month
- Steps on the free plan1 trigger + 1 action
- Encharge triggersAll 5 instant, plan grid does not apply
- Premium appNo
You pay one task per action that succeeds; a failed one is not counted. A Zap that tags every new person uses one task per person. The free plan gives 100 tasks a month and unlimited Zaps, but only two steps: one trigger and one action. Swapping one tag for another is two actions, so a multi-step Zap on a paid plan, as is adding a filter. Encharge is not a premium app, so it works on the free plan.
Connect Encharge to Zapier in three steps
- 01
Start from the Apps page
In Zapier, open Apps and click + Add connection. In the dialog that opens, type Encharge in the search box and pick it from the list of results that comes back.
- 02
Sign in to Encharge
Click Add connection. A tab opens on Encharge's side, where you sign in to the account that holds your people and tags. You need an account on the app, plus access to anything you do not own yourself.
- 03
Grant access
Allow Zapier to use the account. The connection is saved once, and every Encharge step in every Zap reuses it, so the next automation starts with Encharge already linked.
Your first Encharge Zap: move paying customers out of the trial track
GoalWhen someone gets the customer tag, the trial tag goes and the onboarding tag arrives, so the right emails follow.
- 01
Build: pick the trigger
Create a Zap, choose Encharge and Tag Added to Person, select your connection, then pick the customer tag in the Tag field.
- 02
Test the trigger
Run the test. Zapier brings back the three most recent items of the account, so you map fields on a real person rather than an empty sample.
- 03
Add Remove Tag
Add an Encharge step with Remove Tag, fill Email with the person's address as it appears in the trigger's test result, and enter the trial tag. Both fields are required.
- 04
Add Add Tag
Add a second Encharge step with Add Tag, same email, onboarding tag. Never re-add the customer tag here. Two actions make it a multi-step Zap, so a paid plan.
- 05
Test, then Publish
Test each step once and check the person in Encharge. When the tags look right, click Publish. People tagged before that moment are not processed.
Encharge triggers: what can start a Zap
5 events start a Zap when something happens in Encharge, and 5 of them are instant: the app calls Zapier straight away, whatever your plan.
New Person
Instant triggerIn Zapier“Triggers when a new person is created.”
Starts your Zap the moment a person is created in Encharge, however they got there. It is the obvious hook for anything that should happen once per new contact.
Tag Added to Person
Instant triggerIn Zapier“Triggers when a person is tagged.”
Reacts when the tag you chose lands on a person. Tags become switches that set off work outside Encharge.
Tag Removed From Person
Instant triggerIn Zapier“Triggers when a person is untagged.”
Fires when a chosen tag is taken off a person, which is often the quieter but more telling signal: someone left a segment, a trial ended, an interest faded.
Person Unsubscribed
Instant triggerIn Zapier“Triggers when a person unsubscribes.”
Tells your Zap as soon as someone opts out of your Encharge emails. It is the cleanest way to keep the rest of your stack in line with that choice.
Updated Person
Instant triggerIn Zapier“Triggers when a person is updated.”
Fires whenever a person's record changes in Encharge. It catches what the other triggers miss, at the price of firing often.
Encharge actions: what your Zap can do
Encharge gives you 5 actions. For each one: what it does for you, when to reach for it, and what to watch out for.
Operations index
Add Tag
ActionIn Zapier“Tag a person in Encharge”
Puts a tag on a person, identified by email, so Encharge segments and flows can pick them up. Email and tag are both required.
Archive Person
ActionIn Zapier“Archive a person in Encharge”
Archives a person in Encharge, identified by their email address, without anyone opening the dashboard. The email is the only required field.
Add or Update Person
ActionIn Zapier“Create a new person or update an existing one.”
Creates the person in Encharge, or updates them if they are already there. The email address is the only required field, which makes it safe to run from any source of contacts.
Remove Tag
ActionIn Zapier“Remove a tag from a person in Encharge”
Takes a tag off a person, again from their email and the tag name. It is how a contact leaves a segment without anyone opening Encharge.
Unsubscribe Person
ActionIn Zapier“Stop all email to a person”
Stops Encharge from sending any email to a person, from just their address. It brings an opt-out recorded elsewhere into Encharge.
When an Encharge Zap breaks
Zapier attaches no help article to Encharge, so the cases below come from how Zapier behaves with instant triggers and actions that write back into Encharge.
With five triggers and five actions on the same people and tags, loops are the main thing to watch. Read these before you publish, and turn to Zapier troubleshooting if a Zap still misbehaves.
A tag Zap that wakes itself
A Zap started by Tag Added to Person that adds that same tag, or one started by Updated Person that updates the person, sets itself off again and again and burns tasks.Updated Person creating records
Updated Person fires on every change to the person. Used to create something elsewhere, it creates a new record each time, so you end up with duplicates.History is not replayed
A Zap only reacts to what happens after it is switched on. People, tags and unsubscribes from before are never picked up; moving that backlog is a separate job.A bulk import floods the Zap
A large import into Encharge can wake New Person for a huge batch of contacts at once, and Zapier's flood protection can then hold the trigger back.
