What the LawPay Zapier integration does
LawPay handles payments for the legal industry. Through Zapier, other apps can hear about what happens in LawPay the instant it happens, and can ask LawPay to act: charge a saved payment method, create a contact, send a quick bill, or request that a client save a card for later. You set this up once as a Zap.
Three results make the setup worth it. Payment news that travels: Events starts a Zap the moment LawPay reports something, and Format Amount turns the raw figure into one a person can read. Bills sent without opening LawPay: Create Quick Bill emails a bill to a recipient from data another app already holds. Cards on file, collected for you: Create Info Request asks a contact to save a payment method, which Create Charge can then use.
Now the limits. LawPay exposes a single trigger, and it is generic: it reacts to LawPay events in general, so narrowing it down to the ones you care about takes a filter, which makes the Zap multi-step. Every amount is in cents, in and out. There is no refund, update or delete action, and no find-or-create search. Nothing that happened before the Zap was switched on is picked up.

Zapier vocabulary, in plain words
Seven terms come back throughout this page. Each one is defined here once.
- Zap
- The automation you build on Zapier: one trigger, then one or more actions that run each time the trigger event happens.
- Trigger
- The event that starts the Zap. For LawPay, there is one: Events, which fires when LawPay reports a new event.
- Action
- The step the Zap performs once started: it writes, sends or moves something, such as creating a charge.
- Task
- The unit Zapier bills: one action your Zap completes successfully. Your plan allowance counts nothing else.
- Polling vs instant
- Polling triggers are checked on a timer; instant ones are pushed by the app as they happen. The LawPay trigger is instant.
- Filter
- A step that lets the Zap continue only when the incoming data meets your condition, and stops it otherwise.
- Search step
- A step that looks up something already stored in an app, like a contact, and passes it to the next steps.
What a LawPay Zap really costs
LawPay is not reserved for paid plans: the free plan can use it. You pay in tasks, and only successful actions create them.
- Free plan100 tasks a month, unlimited Zaps
- Zap size on free2 steps: one trigger, one action
- Paid plan requiredNo, LawPay works on the free plan
- Trigger typeInstant, so no polling interval
The Events trigger never costs a task. Each action that succeeds counts once, and Format Amount is an action like any other, so a Zap that formats an amount and then creates a contact bills two tasks per run. A failed action is free. The real limit on the free plan is size: one trigger, one action. A filter on the event, a second action or a search such as Search Contacts makes the Zap multi-step, which needs a paid plan. The interval grid below does not apply to LawPay: its only trigger is instant.
Connect your LawPay account
- 01
Go to your apps
Open the Apps page of your Zapier account and click + Add connection. A connection is your LawPay account linked once, then reused by every step that needs it.
- 02
Choose LawPay
In the dialog that appears, type LawPay in the search box, select it in the list of results, then click Add connection. A new browser tab opens on the LawPay side.
- 03
Sign in and allow access
Sign in to LawPay in that tab and grant Zapier access. You need an account on the app, plus read or write rights on anything you do not own and want the Zap to touch.
Your first LawPay Zap
GoalWhen LawPay reports an event you care about, turn its amount from cents into a readable figure for the next steps.
- 01
Set the trigger
Create a Zap, choose LawPay as the app and Events as the trigger event, then select the LawPay connection you just made.
- 02
Test on real events
Run the test: Zapier brings back the three most recent events of the connected account. Pick one that looks like the events you want to handle.
- 03
Add a filter
Add a Filter step and set the field to look at, the rule and the value. Use a text rule on text, a number rule on numbers, or it never passes.
- 04
Format the amount
Add Format Amount and map the amount from the event into Amount in Cents, the only required field. Later steps can use the formatted figure.
- 05
Test, then publish
Test each step and read what came back, then publish the Zap to switch it on. With a filter, this Zap is multi-step and needs a paid plan.
LawPay trigger
1 event starts a Zap when something happens in LawPay, and one of them is instant: the app calls Zapier straight away, whatever your plan.
Events
Instant triggerIn Zapier“Triggers when new LawPay webhook events are created.”
The single entry point of LawPay on Zapier: the Zap starts each time LawPay creates a new event and reports it. Zapier features it on the app page, and every LawPay automation that reacts to something begins here.
LawPay actions
LawPay gives you 5 actions. For each one: what it does for you, when to reach for it, and what to watch out for.
Operations index
Create Charge
ActionIn Zapier“Creates a charge.”
Charges a contact's saved payment method. Two fields are required: the Amount, in cents, and the Payment Method.
Create Contact
ActionIn Zapier“Creates a contact.”
Adds a contact to LawPay. First Name, Last Name and Email Address are all required, so the earlier steps must carry all three.
Create Info Request
ActionIn Zapier“Creates an InfoRequest for a given Contact to save their own payment method for future charges. The InfoRequest will be sent to the Contact via email by LawPay, so the Contact must have at least one email address defined. After the Contact submits this information, the payment method is saved and available for future charges. For more information see: Creating an InfoRequest.”
Asks a contact to save their own payment method for later charges. LawPay emails the request itself, using the Subject and Message you set, to the contact picked by Contact Id.
Create Quick Bill
ActionIn Zapier“Creates a quick bill.”
Sends a quick bill to an email address. It needs the Deposit Account ID where the money should land, the recipient's Email Address and the Quick Bill Amount. Zapier features it.
Format Amount
ActionIn Zapier“Formats the amount field on a transaction event from cents.”
Turns the amount of a transaction event from cents into a normal figure. Its one required field, Amount in Cents, takes the value straight from the trigger.
LawPay searches
3 search steps look for data that already exists in LawPay, so a later step can use it.
A search step finds something that already exists in LawPay and passes it to the next steps. In the editor, the three LawPay searches sit at the bottom of the Action event list, under SEARCH. Any search turns the Zap into a multi-step one.
Get Contact
SearchIn Zapier“Returns a contact by contactId”
Returns one contact from its contact ID. It is the precise lookup: no name, no email, only the identifier.
Search Contacts
SearchIn Zapier“Returns contacts by query.”
Looks for contacts that match a query, which makes it the broad search of the app.
Get Payment Methods
SearchIn Zapier“Returns payment methods by contactId.”
Lists the payment methods saved for a contact, from the contact ID.
The three settings every search exposes
- Successful if no search results are found?Left on its default, a search that finds nothing stops the Zap and skips the steps that depended on it. Switched on, the Zap carries on without a result.
- Create X if it doesn't exist yet? This box would make a search create what it cannot find. No LawPay search offers it, so a missing contact needs Create Contact as its own step.
- If multiple search results are found?Three ways out when several items match: keep the first one, which is the default, stop the Zap, or hand all of them on at once.
When a LawPay Zap breaks
Zapier attaches no help article and no documented limit to LawPay. What breaks comes from how Zapier works in general, plus the cents.
Three cases account for most surprises. For anything else, see our Zapier troubleshooting guide.
Past events never come through
A Zap only reacts to what happens after it is switched on. Events LawPay created before stay out; moving that history is a separate job.The Zap sets itself off again
A Zap that writes into the place its own trigger watches restarts itself and burns tasks fast. Check that the actions it runs do not produce the events it listens to.A sudden burst gets held back
When the trigger returns a huge batch at once, after a bulk operation or a migration, Zapier's flood protection can hold it back instead of running everything.
