Mixpanel Zapier integrationAutomate Mixpanel with Zapier.
The Mixpanel Zapier integration offers 0 triggers, 2 actions and 0 searches. It only writes into Mixpanel: another tool starts the Zap, then Mixpanel records an event or updates a user profile, so offline moments land next to product data.

What the Mixpanel Zapier integration is for
Hooking Mixpanel up to Zapier is a way to feed your product analytics with what happens outside the product. A payment, a signed contract, a support call: Zapier catches it in the tool where it happens and writes it into Mixpanel, so your funnels stop missing those steps.
Two typical results come out of it. An event on the timeline: Track Event records a payment, a demo booked or a webinar attended against the right user, so a growth team sees it in the same funnel as in-app clicks. An enriched profile: Create or Update Profile adds the company, the plan or the email collected in your CRM to the Mixpanel profile of that user, ready to segment on. Both actions point at the same user through one identifier, the Distinct ID, which is where most setups go right or wrong.
Here is what Zapier does not do for Mixpanel. There is no trigger: a new cohort, a report or an alert inside Mixpanel cannot start a Zap. There is no search either, so a Zap cannot read back a profile or an event count. The integration is one-way, into Mixpanel. If the goal is to act on what Mixpanel measures, this is not the route.
To see how other platforms handle the same flow, the Make vs Zapier comparison lists the criteria, and the Zapier training walks through the basics.
Zapier vocabulary in one minute
Seven words come back on every Zapier page. Here they are, explained once in plain English.
- Zap
- The automation you build on Zapier: one trigger, then one or more actions that run every time the trigger event happens.
- Trigger
- The event in an app that starts the Zap. Once the Zap is on, Zapier waits for it. Mixpanel offers no trigger.
- Action
- What the Zap does once it has started: the step that writes, sends or moves something for you. Both Mixpanel operations are actions.
- Task
- The unit Zapier bills: one action your Zap completes successfully. The count on your plan is a count of those.
- Polling vs instant
- Zapier checks a polling trigger on a timer. An instant trigger is reported by the app itself, the moment the event happens.
- Filter
- A step that lets the Zap go on only when what arrived meets the condition you set, and stops it otherwise.
- Multi-step Zap
- Any Zap beyond one trigger and one action. A filter or a second action turns it into one, and it then needs a paid plan.
What sending data to Mixpanel costs
Mixpanel is not one of the apps Zapier reserves for paid plans: it runs from the free plan. What matters is where the tasks go.
- Free plan100 tasks per month, unlimited Zaps
- Free plan Zap size2 steps: one trigger, one action
- Reserved for paid plansNo
- Billed per run1 task per successful Mixpanel action
The trigger never costs a task, and neither do the checks Zapier makes to find new items. Each Mixpanel action that succeeds is one task. So a Zap that tracks a payment and then updates the buyer's profile costs two per payment. A failed action is not counted. The real limit of the free plan is size: two steps. Add a filter to keep only paid invoices and the Zap turns multi-step, which needs a paid plan.
Connect Mixpanel to Zapier in 3 steps
- 01
Open your connected apps
In Zapier, go to the Apps page and click + Add connection. You need a Mixpanel account, plus write access to the project if someone else owns it. Check this before you start.
- 02
Find Mixpanel
Search for Mixpanel in the dialog, select it, and click Add connection. A new tab opens on the Mixpanel side, which is where you actually sign in to your account.
- 03
Sign in and grant access
Log in to Mixpanel in that tab and allow Zapier to use the account. The connection is stored once, then every Mixpanel step in every Zap you build reuses it.
Your first Zap: CRM contacts into Mixpanel profiles
GoalEach new CRM contact that carries a user ID updates the matching Mixpanel profile with company and email.
- 01
Create the Zap and pick the trigger
Start a new Zap and choose your CRM with its new contact event. Mixpanel cannot open a Zap: it has no trigger of its own.
- 02
Test the trigger
Run the test. Zapier pulls the three most recent contacts of the connected account; pick one that already uses your product.
- 03
Add a filter
Click the plus icon, choose Filter, then fill the three boxes: the user ID field, a rule, and the value. Contacts without an ID stop here.
- 04
Add Create or Update Profile
Add Mixpanel with Create or Update Profile. Map the user ID into Distinct ID, then add properties such as
$emailand the company. - 05
Test, then publish
Test the step, check the profile in Mixpanel, then click Publish. The filter makes this a multi-step Zap, so it runs on a paid plan.
The 2 Mixpanel actions
Mixpanel gives you 2 actions. For each one: what it does for you, when to reach for it, and what to watch out for.
Create or Update Profile
ActionIn Zapier“Create a new profile or update properties of an existing profile.”
Writes properties onto a Mixpanel user profile, creating the profile when it does not exist yet and updating it when it does.
$email, $name or $phone are reserved keys, and $email is the one Mixpanel's Notifications product uses to send targeted emails.Track Event
ActionIn Zapier“Send an Event to Mixpanel.”
Records a named event in Mixpanel, so something that happened outside your product shows up in its reports and funnels.
When a Mixpanel Zap breaks
The problems that come up here have two sources: how Zaps work on every app, and how the Distinct ID is mapped.
Four cases cover most of what goes wrong. None of them needs code, but all of them are easier to avoid than to clean up in your analytics afterwards. The Zapier troubleshooting page covers the rest.
Past payments never arrive
A Zap only reacts to what happens after it is switched on. Last quarter's payments will not reach Mixpanel through it: importing that history is a separate job.Events and profiles do not connect
If the Distinct ID mapped in Zapier differs from the distinct_id attached to the events your app sends, Mixpanel cannot connect those events to the profile the Zap writes.A bulk import is held back
When the trigger app suddenly returns a huge batch, after a migration for example, Zapier's flood protection may hold it instead of pushing every event at once.A loop through your own tools
If a later step writes back into the place your trigger watches, the Zap sets itself off again and again and eats through your task count.
