Overview

What the Mocean API Zapier integration actually does

The integration links your Mocean account to Zapier, so text messages go out and balance checks happen without you opening Mocean. You build a Zap: an event in one app starts it, and Mocean API does the sending or the reading. Three operations in total, all of them usable on the free plan.

A text message that leaves on its own. Send SMS takes a sender name, one or more phone numbers and the message itself. Put it behind a new form entry or a new spreadsheet row and the text goes out without anyone copying a number by hand.

A warning when your credit moves. Updated Balance starts a Zap when the balance on your Mocean account changes. Pair it with a message to yourself, or a line in a sheet, and the drop in credit stops being a surprise.

A balance figure in the middle of a Zap. Find Balance is an action that reads the current balance while the Zap runs, so the next step can use it. Check at test time which values it hands back before you map them.

What Zapier does not do here. There is no search step for this app, and the only trigger watches the balance: nothing in the list reacts to a message you send or receive. The trigger works by polling, so it is never immediate. If you are weighing other tools for the same job, see our n8n vs Zapier comparison.

Vocabulary

Zapier words in one minute

Seven words come back on every Zapier screen. Here they are in plain English, once.

Zap
The automation you build: one trigger, then one or more actions that run every time the trigger event happens.
Trigger
The event in an app that starts the Zap. Once the Zap is on, Zapier waits for it and does the rest.
Action
What the Zap does once it has started: the step that writes, sends or moves something for you, like a text message.
Task
The unit Zapier bills: one action your Zap completes successfully. Your plan's quota is a count of those.
Polling vs instant
A polling trigger is checked on a timer for new items. An instant trigger is reported by the app itself the moment it happens.
Filter
A step that lets the Zap go on only when what arrived meets your condition, and stops it there otherwise.
Multi-step Zap
Any Zap beyond one trigger and one action. A second action or a filter makes one, and it then needs a paid plan.
Cost

What it really costs

Mocean API is not a premium app, so it runs on the free plan. What you pay for is tasks.

  • Premium appNo, works on the free plan
  • Free plan100 tasks a month, two-step Zaps
  • TriggerCosts no task
  • Failed actionNot counted

The trigger never costs a task, and Zapier checking for a new balance costs nothing either. Each action that succeeds counts as one task, such as a text sent by Send SMS; an action that fails is not counted. The free plan gives you 100 tasks a month and Zaps of two steps only. A Zap that sends a text and then reads the balance has two actions, so it is a multi-step Zap and needs a paid plan, and so does a filter. Updated Balance is a polling trigger: the grid below says how often Zapier looks.

Connect

Connect Mocean API to Zapier in 3 steps

  1. 01

    Open the Apps page

In your Zapier account, go to Apps and click + Add connection. You need a Mocean account, plus read or write access on anything you do not own yourself and want the Zap to touch.

  2. 02

    Find Mocean API

Type Mocean API in the search box of the dialog, pick it from the results, then click Add connection. A new tab opens on the Mocean side for the next step.

  3. 03

    Sign in and grant access

Sign in to Mocean in that tab and grant Zapier access to the account. From then on, every Mocean step in every Zap reuses this connection: you link the account once.

First Zap

Your first Zap: text yourself the credit left when the balance moves

GoalYour Mocean balance changes: the Zap reads the new figure and sends it to your own phone, so you never have to log in to check.

  1. 01

Create the Zap and pick the trigger

Start a new Zap, choose Mocean API and the Updated Balance event, then select your connection. Test it: Zapier brings back the three most recent items of the account, so you map from a real one.

  2. 02

    Add Find Balance

Add a step, choose Mocean API and Find Balance. It reads the current balance while the Zap runs. A second action makes the Zap multi-step, so this one needs a paid plan.

  3. 03

    Add Send SMS

Add Send SMS. Fill Sender ID with the name you want to see, put your own number with its country code in Receiver Number, and map the balance from the previous step into Content.

  4. 04

    Test each step

Run each step once and read what came back. Check which values Find Balance returns before you rely on them, and note that the Send SMS test sends a real text.

  5. 05

    Publish

Click Publish to switch the Zap on. It only reacts to balance changes that happen after that moment, and Zapier checks for them at the interval of your plan.

Triggers

Mocean API triggers

1 event starts a Zap when something happens in Mocean API. Zapier checks for them at the interval your plan allows.

1

Updated Balance

Polling trigger

In Zapier“Triggers when account balance updated.”

Starts a Zap when the balance on your Mocean account changes, so a change in your credit can set off a message, a log line or a check further down the Zap. It is the only trigger this app offers, and it watches the account, not individual messages.

How it fires
Zapier goes and looks at regular intervals, and how often depends on your plan: every 15 minutes on the free one
When to use it
you want to hear about a shrinking SMS credit, without logging in to check.
Watch out
the trigger does not say on its own why the balance moved, so check at test time which values it hands back before you build alerts on them.
Actions

Mocean API actions

Mocean API gives you 2 actions. For each one: what it does for you, when to reach for it, and what to watch out for.

1

Find Balance

Action

In Zapier“Find a account balance”

Reads the current balance of your Mocean account while the Zap runs and passes it to the steps that follow. Despite its name it sits among the actions, not the searches.

When to use it
right after a send, to write the remaining credit into a sheet or a message.
Watch out
placed after another action it makes the Zap multi-step, so it needs a paid plan; check at test time which values it returns.
2

Send SMS

Action

In Zapier“Send new SMS to the receiver phone number”

Sends a text message to one phone number or several, from the sender name you choose. Several numbers go in the same field, separated by a space or a comma.

When to use it
a text that should go out each time another app of your Zap records something, without anyone copying the number.
Watch out
every number needs its country code, and each successful send counts as one task.
When it breaks

When the Mocean API Zap breaks

Zapier attaches no help article to Mocean API, so the risks here are the ones every Zap shares.

These limits come from Zapier itself and apply to every app, Mocean API included. If one of them gets in your way, start with our Zapier troubleshooting guide.

  • Nothing from before the Zap

A Zap only reacts to what happens after you publish it. Balance changes from before that moment are not picked up; moving that backlog is a separate job.
  • A Zap that sets itself off

As a general rule, a Zap that writes into the very place its own trigger watches can start itself again and again, and burns through your task count fast.
  • Flood protection on big batches

When a trigger suddenly returns a huge batch, after a bulk import for instance, Zapier's flood protection can hold those items back instead of sending them all.
  • The same item, only once

Zapier keeps track of what it has already seen on a polling trigger, so the same item does not start the Zap twice.

FAQ

Mocean API Zapier integration: questions people ask

01Is the Mocean API Zapier integration free?
Yes, it works on the free Zapier plan, because Mocean API is not a premium app. The free plan gives you 100 tasks a month and an unlimited number of Zaps, each limited to two steps: one trigger and one action. That covers a Zap that sends a text when something happens elsewhere. As soon as you add a second action, such as Find Balance after Send SMS, or a filter, the Zap becomes multi-step and needs a paid plan.
02How many tasks does a Mocean API Zap use?
One task per action that succeeds. The Updated Balance trigger costs nothing, and Zapier checking the balance does not cost anything either, however often it looks. A Zap with Send SMS alone uses one task per run. Add a row in a sheet after it and each run uses two. An action that fails is not counted against your plan. A three-action Zap uses three times as much as a one-action Zap, so keep only the steps you need.
03Does Mocean API work in real time on Zapier?
No. Updated Balance is a polling trigger: Zapier goes and looks at regular intervals, and how often depends on your plan, every 15 minutes on the free one, 2 minutes on Professional and 1 minute on Team or Enterprise. On paid plans the interval can be changed and a check can be run by hand from the editor. The type is set by the app and cannot be switched to instant from Zapier. A Zap started by an instant trigger in another app does not wait for that interval.
04What do you need to connect Mocean API to Zapier?
A Mocean account, plus read or write access on anything you do not own yourself and want the Zap to touch. The connection takes three moves: open the Apps page of your Zapier account, click + Add connection and pick Mocean API, then sign in to Mocean in the tab that opens and grant Zapier access. The connection is then reused by every Mocean step in every Zap you build, so you only do it once per account.
05Why does Send SMS fail on some phone numbers?
Check the number format first. Receiver Number expects each phone number with its country code, and several numbers in one field must be separated by a space or a comma, nothing else. Numbers stored in a local format in your form or sheet will not match what the step expects. Fix the format at the source before you switch the Zap on. Sender ID and Content are required too, so check at test time that both carry a value.
06What if the Mocean API operation you want is not on Zapier?
Then this integration cannot do it. The app page of Mocean API on Zapier shows the current list: today 1 trigger, Updated Balance, and 2 actions, Send SMS and Find Balance, with no search. If the gap is a trigger, look for the event in the other app of your Zap instead, since any trigger can start a Mocean action. If it is a different kind of step, compare tools on that point, which is one of the criteria in the next answer.
07Zapier, Make or n8n for Mocean API?
It depends on your criteria rather than on a winner. Zapier makes sense when your team wants to set things up through forms and the three Mocean operations listed here cover the need. Look at the size of your volume: every successful text is a task on Zapier. Look at the balance trigger: on Zapier it is polled, at an interval set by your plan. And look at who will maintain the Zap, since the other tools ask for more technical comfort. Compare them on those points with your own sending volume.
