Overview

What the Twist Zapier integration does for your team

It lets Zapier listen to what your team writes in Twist and post threads, comments or messages back into it, without writing code. You choose the event that starts the automation, you choose what follows, and the editor connects them. Eleven operations: three that listen, three that post, five that look things up.

Three results people build with it. An incident relay: New Thread Added to Channel spots a new thread in your support channel and Post Message pings the on-call conversation, so nobody has to watch the channel. A tidy follow-up: Post Comment adds a reply under an existing thread when something happens elsewhere, keeping the discussion in one place. A searchable trail: Find Thread looks up a thread by a text query so a later step can comment in the right spot.

Now what it does not do. Nothing here edits or deletes a thread, a comment or a message: the actions only post. Every trigger and action asks you to pick a team, and most a channel or a conversation too, so one Zap covers one place, not your whole workspace. And there is no find-or-create: if the search finds nothing, Zapier will not create the thread for you.

The good news is speed. All three triggers are instant, so they react on the free plan exactly as on a paid one. If you also use other tools, the same app has guides for Twist n8n integration and Twist Make integration.

Vocabulary

Zapier in seven words

Seven words you will meet on every screen of the editor. One line each, then the page uses them as they are.

Zap
The automation you build on Zapier: one trigger, then one or more actions that run every time the trigger event happens.
Trigger
The event in an app that starts the Zap. Once the Zap is switched on, Zapier waits for that event and nothing else.
Action
What the Zap does once it has started: the step that posts, writes or moves something for you.
Task
The unit Zapier bills. Every action your Zap completes successfully counts as one task on your plan.
Polling vs instant
A polling trigger is checked by Zapier on a timer. An instant trigger is pushed by the app the moment the event happens.
Filter
A step that lets the Zap carry on only when what arrived meets your condition, and halts it otherwise.
Search step
A step that finds something that already exists in an app, so the steps after it can use what it found.
Cost

What a Twist Zap really costs

Listening is free. A new thread, comment or message that starts your Zap costs nothing by itself; only the actions that follow are counted against your plan.

  • Trigger0 tasks, every time
  • Action that works1 task each
  • Action that fails0 tasks
  • Free plan100 tasks a month, unlimited Zaps, two steps per Zap
  • Filter or search stepmulti-step Zap, paid plan

Each action that goes through counts as one task, and each one is counted on its own: a new thread that triggers one message and one comment costs two. An action that fails is not counted. The free plan gives 100 tasks a month and unlimited Zaps, but each Zap stays at two steps, one trigger and one action. Add a filter, a search or a second action and it becomes a multi-step Zap, which needs a paid plan. The interval grid below only applies to polling triggers, and none of the Twist triggers work that way.

Connect

Connect your Twist account once

  1. 01

    Open your connections

In your Zapier account, go to Apps and click + Add connection. A connection is your Twist account linked to Zapier once, then reused by every Twist step of every Zap you build afterwards.

  2. 02

    Pick Twist

Type Twist in the dialog's search box, select it, then click Add connection. A new tab opens on the Twist side so you can sign in there, not inside Zapier.

  3. 03

    Sign in and grant access

Log in with the Twist account that belongs to the team you want to automate, then allow Zapier to use it. For a channel or conversation you are not part of, you also need read or write access before a Zap can touch it.

First Zap

Your first Twist Zap

GoalEvery new thread in the support channel that mentions an outage is relayed to the on-call conversation, and nothing else is.

  1. 01

    Build: set the trigger

Create a Zap, choose Twist as the app that starts it, then New Thread Added to Channel. Pick the team and the support channel. A Zap always opens on a trigger, never on an action.

  2. 02

    Test on a real thread

Select your connection and run the test. Zapier brings back the three most recent items, so post a real test thread first and build the next steps on it.

  3. 03

    Filter the outages

Add a Filter step from the plus icon: a field from the trigger, a text rule, and outage as the value. The filter makes this a multi-step Zap, so it needs a paid plan.

  4. 04

    Relay the alert

Add Post Message, choose the team and the on-call conversation, and build the Content from what the trigger carried. Test the step and check the conversation in Twist.

  5. 05

    Publish

When each step answers properly, click Publish. From that moment, and not before, new outage threads reach the on-call conversation straight away.

Triggers

The 3 triggers, one by one

3 events start a Zap when something happens in Twist, and 3 of them are instant: the app calls Zapier straight away, whatever your plan.

1

New Comment Posted in Thread

Instant trigger

In Zapier“Triggers when a new comment is added in a thread.”

Starts the Zap when someone replies under a thread you picked in advance. It follows one discussion closely rather than a whole channel.

How it fires
the app tells Zapier the moment it happens, so the Zap starts right away, whatever your plan
When to use it
a product lead who wants every reply on the release thread copied to the tool where decisions are logged.
Watch out
team, channel and thread are all required, so this Zap only ever watches that one thread.
2

New Message Posted in Conversation

Instant trigger

In Zapier“Triggers when a new message is added anywhere inside a conversation.”

Fires when a message is added anywhere inside a Twist conversation you pick. It is your way to react to a request written there the moment it is posted.

How it fires
the app tells Zapier the moment it happens, so the Zap starts right away, whatever your plan
When to use it
an ops manager who gets quick requests by message and wants each one turned into a ticket elsewhere.
Watch out
if the same Zap posts back into that conversation, each reply sets it off again.
3

New Thread Added to Channel

Instant trigger

In Zapier“Triggers when a new thread is added to a channel.”

Reacts to each new thread opened in a channel you choose. Where the comment trigger follows an existing discussion, this one catches the start of a new one.

How it fires
the app tells Zapier the moment it happens, so the Zap starts right away, whatever your plan
When to use it
a support team whose bug reports open as threads and must reach the on-call person straight away.
Watch out
it watches one channel per Zap; a second channel means a second Zap.
Actions

The 3 actions

Twist gives you 3 actions. For each one: what it does for you, when to reach for it, and what to watch out for.

1

Post Comment

Action

In Zapier“Post a comment to a thread you choose.”

Adds a reply under an existing thread. You choose the team, channel and thread, then write the text from what earlier steps brought.

When to use it
posting a status update under the thread that tracks a deal or a delivery.
Watch out
the Post as Zapier option sends it from the Zapier user, which is how you get notified of your own updates.
2

Post Message

Action

In Zapier“Post a message to a conversation you choose.”

Sends a message into a conversation rather than a channel. Team, conversation and content are the three things it needs.

When to use it
a private heads-up to one colleague or a small group when something needs their eyes.
Watch out
it only posts into a conversation; to write in a channel, Post Thread or Post Comment is the one to pick.
3

Post Thread

Action

In Zapier“Post a thread to a channel you choose.”

Opens a new thread in the channel you pick, with a title built from earlier steps. It starts a discussion instead of adding to one.

When to use it
giving each new client or project its own thread in a channel, so the conversation has a home from day one.
Watch out
Thread Title is required, so an earlier step must give it a value.
Searches

The 5 searches

5 search steps look for data that already exists in Twist, so a later step can use it.

In the editor, searches sit at the bottom of the Action event list, under their own SEARCH heading. Some action fields also show a + Add search step button that inserts one just above and wires what it finds into the field. Whether a search wants the exact value or something close is decided by Twist, not by Zapier.

1

Find Comment by Id

Search

In Zapier“Finds a comment by matching against the id.”

Pulls back one comment when you already hold its identifier. It does not search by text; the Id has to come from an earlier step.

When to use it
in a longer Zap, to read the full comment that an earlier step only pointed to.
2

Find Message by Id

Search

In Zapier“Finds a message by matching against the id.”

Retrieves a single conversation message from its identifier, so later steps can work with its content. Like the other Id searches, it never guesses.

When to use it
when another tool stored the message's Id and you need the message itself to forward or log it.
3

Find Thread

Search

In Zapier“Finds a thread inside a team by matching against a text query.”

The only search here that works from words: it looks for a thread inside a team that matches a text query you build.

When to use it
finding the thread named after a client before posting a comment under it.
Watch out
Team and Search Query are both required, and several threads may match; the setting above decides which one wins.
4

Find Thread by Id

Search

In Zapier“Finds a thread by matching against the id.”

Fetches one thread from its identifier, with no guessing involved. Useful when the Id is already stored somewhere, in another tool or an earlier step.

When to use it
a project tool that saved each project's thread Id and now needs to reach that exact thread.
5

Find User by Id

Search

In Zapier“Finds a user by matching against their id.”

Looks up a Twist user from their identifier, so a later step knows who wrote or who should be told.

When to use it
turning the author Id carried by an earlier step into a person you can name in a log or a message.

The three settings every search exposes

  1. Successful if no search results are found?
Left on its default, a search that finds nothing stops the Zap right there and the steps that needed it are skipped. Turn it on and the Zap keeps going with nothing in hand.
  2. Create X if it doesn't exist yet?
This box turns a search into a find or create. Twist exposes no such variant on Zapier, so its searches only find; they never create the missing item for you.
  3. If multiple search results are found?
Three ways out when several items match: keep the first one, which is the default, stop the Zap, or hand all of them on at once.
When it breaks

When a Twist Zap breaks

Zapier attaches no help article to Twist and records no limit of its own for it. The failures worth knowing are the ones every Zap shares, plus the required team and place covered above.

Four cases explain most surprises. If a Zap is already misbehaving, Zapier troubleshooting covers the usual suspects.

  • Older threads are not picked up

A Zap only reacts to what happens after it is published. Threads, comments and messages written before that moment never start it; moving that history is a separate job.
  • The Zap that answers itself

A Zap that posts into the very thread, channel or conversation its trigger watches sets itself off again and again, and burns through your task count fast.
  • A burst of activity

When a trigger suddenly returns a huge batch, after a bulk import or a migration for instance, Zapier's flood protection may hold part of it back.
  • Deduplication is not at work here

Zapier remembers what it has seen on polling triggers so one item does not run twice. All three Twist triggers are instant, so that safeguard is not the one in play.

FAQ

Questions people ask before building

01Is the Twist Zapier integration free?
Yes, it works on the free plan, within its limits. Twist is not one of the apps Zapier keeps for paid plans, so you can connect it and build straight away. The free plan gives 100 tasks a month and unlimited Zaps, each limited to two steps: one trigger, one action. A new thread that posts one message fits. Add a filter, a search or a second action and the Zap becomes multi-step, which requires a paid plan.
02How many tasks does a Twist Zap use?
One per action that succeeds, and nothing for the trigger. A new thread, comment or message that starts the Zap is free, and an action that fails is not counted either. In a Zap with several actions, each one is billed separately, so a thread that triggers a message and a comment costs two. With 100 free tasks a month, a busy channel is what drains the count, because every new thread runs the actions behind it.
03Is Twist real time on Zapier?
Yes, all three Twist triggers are instant. New threads, comments and messages are reported by Twist the moment they happen, so the Zap starts straight away whatever your plan. The polling grid of 15 minutes on Free, 2 on Professional and 1 on Team and Enterprise does not apply to them. That type is set by the app, not by you, and a Zap built on an instant trigger shows a lightning bolt in the editor.
04What do you need to connect Twist to Zapier?
A Twist account that belongs to the team you want to automate. In Zapier, open Apps, click + Add connection, search for Twist, click Add connection and sign in on the tab that opens. Grant access and the connection is reused by every Twist step. Since every trigger and action asks for a team, and most for a channel, thread or conversation, the account must be able to see those places, or the Zap has nowhere to work.
05Why does a Twist trigger only watch one channel?
Because the channel, and for comments the thread, are required fields you set once in the trigger. New Thread Added to Channel follows the channel you picked, New Comment Posted in Thread follows one thread, and New Message Posted in Conversation one conversation. A Zap therefore listens to one place at a time. To cover two channels, build two Zaps, keeping in mind that each one draws on the same monthly task count.
06What if the Twist operation you need is not there?
Then Zapier cannot do it with Twist on its own. The integration offers three triggers, three posting actions and five searches, with no action to edit or delete what was posted and no raw request action to reach the rest of Twist. Before building a workaround, check the n8n and Make pages for Twist, which list what each of those tools exposes for this app. The list there may cover the gap, or it may not.
07Zapier, Make or n8n for Twist?
It depends on your criteria, not on a winner. Zapier suits a team whose needs fit three instant triggers, three posting actions and five searches, and who already work in Zapier. Make or n8n are worth a look when you need an operation this list does not offer, or when your other automations already live there. Compare the operations each tool lists for Twist, then how each one bills, before choosing.
