What's the best cloud backup software for an MSP?

The one that runs every client from a single pane of glass, at a monthly cost you can pass through. Storage, bundled or bring-your-own, swings your margin more than the sticker price.

An MSP doesn't shop for backup the way a single company does. You need a console that walls off each client in its own tenant, a bill that tracks protected machines month to month, and an offsite copy you can restore without driving to the client. Most "best of" lists skip all three, and most of them are written by vendors ranking themselves.

Short answer: Cove Data Protection is the lowest-stress pick for a mixed fleet, because cloud storage is baked into a per-device rate. Acronis Cyber Protect Cloud covers the most ground, with a minimum monthly commitment attached. NAKIVO and Comet are the only two that print a price, and NAKIVO the only one priced per workload, from $1.85 a month. Comet lets you keep your own storage and your own brand. Datto sells a turnkey service with an appliance, and Keepit sticks to SaaS data like Microsoft 365.

Our math uses a sample book of 50 workloads (servers, endpoints or VMs) and 5 TB to store. When a vendor hides its price, we say so and tell you what to ask the rep.

How we scored

How we compared and scored

The top results for this search are vendor blogs, a few SaaS directories and listicles that name ten tools without a single price. None of them adds storage to the bill, flags a minimum commitment, or tells you what you can mark up.

We compared each vendor's pricing and feature pages, the storage rate cards of Backblaze B2 and Wasabi, and threads on r/msp and MSP community forums. A platform only made the list if its official page confirms three things: a multi-tenant console, an offsite copy in a cloud, and usage-based billing. NinjaOne Backup (built into its RMM) and MSP360 stayed out: their official sites don't spell out storage terms or pricing.

1
Best for mixed fleets, storage included

Cove Data Protection

4.4/5

Cove is N-able's backup line, and it was designed for MSPs from day one. You pay a flat rate per server or workstation and a per-user rate for Microsoft 365. Storage in N-able's own data centers is part of that rate, and it's pooled across your whole client base, so one client's fat file server is offset by another client's handful of laptops. Retention goes up to 10 years.

N-able claims 14,000 MSP customers and more than 4 million Microsoft 365 users protected. The multi-tenant dashboard plugs into your RMM for rollout and your PSA for billing and tickets. One MSP who moved off Acronis says the switch gave them double the storage and no retention cap, and that the platform simply stopped needing babysitting. The pushback: some find the per-device price steep, and one reviewer misses a billing integration with Autotask. No public price list, so you're talking to sales.

Standout features
  • Cloud storage included and pooled across clients
  • Retention up to 10 years
  • Multi-year price lock
+Pros
  • ✓No storage to buy or monitor
  • ✓Console built for MSP operations
  • ✓Microsoft 365 in the same pane
−Cons
  • ✗No public pricing
  • ✗Per-device rate feels high to some
  • ✗No Autotask billing integration
Verdict

The easiest to run day to day: one device rate, storage covered. Ask for the multi-year price lock on your very first quote.

Best for bundling backup and security

Acronis Cyber Protect Cloud

4.3/5

Acronis Cyber Protect Cloud gives you two ways to pay: a fixed monthly price per protected workload, or a price based on the total volume of protected data. The per-workload model bundles storage, pooled per customer tenant: 3 TB per server, 2 TB per VM, 300 GB per workstation, and unlimited for Microsoft 365. Go beyond that and overage kicks in.

The catch is commercial, not technical. Acronis requires a minimum monthly commitment it doesn't publish, and lists no prices. A distributor announced adjusted Acronis prices for 2026, and one MSP describes how the 2022 increase ate into margins right after migrating. Opinions on r/msp are split: some report one problem after another, others call it the platform that can do everything. Several also wish they could point backups at their own storage the way Comet or NAKIVO allow.

Standout features
  • Storage bundled per workload, pooled per tenant
  • Two pricing models
  • Backup and security in one agent
+Pros
  • ✓Widest coverage in this ranking
  • ✓Pick per-workload or per-GB
  • ✓Unlimited Microsoft 365 storage
−Cons
  • ✗Unpublished minimum commitment
  • ✗Price hikes MSPs have felt
  • ✗Limited bring-your-own storage
Verdict

The most complete stack if you also sell security. Get the minimum commitment and renewal terms written into the contract.

Best published per-workload price

NAKIVO Backup & Replication for MSPs

4.2/5

NAKIVO is one of the two vendors here with a price on the page (Comet is the other), and the only one priced per workload: $1.85 per workload per month if you commit for a year, $2.60 if you pay monthly. For 50 workloads that's $92.50 a month on the annual plan. One deployment handles up to 100 isolated tenants, and each client can get a self-service portal to run their own restores.

The detail techs love: MSP Direct Connect links your deployment to a client site without a VPN and without the client opening a single port. The trade-off is that NAKIVO doesn't sell storage with the license. You pick the target, an on-prem repo or cloud object storage like Backblaze B2 or Wasabi. With 5 TB on Wasabi, add $39.95 a month; on B2, $34.75. More moving parts than Cove, but every line of your margin is visible.

Standout features
  • Public per-workload pricing
  • 100 isolated tenants per deployment
  • No VPN, no open ports at the client
+Pros
  • ✓Cost you can model before any quote
  • ✓Client self-service restore portal
  • ✓Storage of your choice
−Cons
  • ✗Storage to buy and monitor
  • ✗Storage billed back separately
  • ✗Server-first design
Verdict

Best price transparency for a server-heavy book. Pair it with Wasabi or B2 and bill storage as its own line.

Best for keeping your storage and your brand

Comet Backup

4.1/5

Comet sells white-label backup: your clients see your logo, not Comet's. The management console can be hosted by Comet (Professional) or self-hosted (Growth, which includes two licenses, a primary and a replica). Pricing starts at $2 per endpoint per month, and console plans start at $49 a month. You set up one tenant account per client.

Its real edge is storage freedom: your own server, any S3 bucket with Object Lock (which blocks deletion for a set period), or Comet's own storage. It covers Microsoft 365, Hyper-V and SQL Server. On MSP forums, people recommend it for budget-conscious clients, paired with Wasabi as a cheap target. The limit they mention: it needs a workstation or server to run on. One more thing: the "$6.99/TB" Comet Storage rate shown at year end is a promotion, not a list price.

Standout features
  • White-label
  • Any storage, including S3 Object Lock
  • Hosted or self-hosted console
+Pros
  • ✓One of the lowest entry costs
  • ✓Your brand on the agent
  • ✓Microsoft 365, Hyper-V and SQL Server
−Cons
  • ✗You manage the storage
  • ✗Needs a machine to run on
  • ✗Storage promo is not a list price
Verdict

The smart way to launch a backup service under your own brand. Model your margin on the regular storage price, not the promo.

Best turnkey BCDR with hardware

Datto SIRIS and SaaS Protection

4.1/5

Datto, part of Kaseya, sells two pieces that fit together. SIRIS is turnkey business continuity: an appliance at the client site, replicated to Datto Cloud, with infinite or time-based retention. The service is a flat fee with the appliance included. SaaS Protection backs up Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace three times a day, with point-in-time, granular, non-destructive restores.

SaaS Protection pricing is built for MSPs: the discount applies to the total number of licenses you sell across all your clients, not client by client. One r/msp commenter calls it absurdly cheap. The catch sits on the SIRIS side: Datto Cloud is proprietary, and getting data out of the ecosystem for a restore elsewhere comes at a cost. Know that before you sign. No public pricing.

Standout features
  • Appliance included plus Datto Cloud
  • Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace 3x daily
  • Discount across your whole book
+Pros
  • ✓Fast local recovery from the appliance
  • ✓Infinite retention option
  • ✓Very competitive SaaS Protection
−Cons
  • ✗No public pricing
  • ✗Proprietary cloud, costly to exit
  • ✗Tied to the Kaseya ecosystem
Verdict

The safest bet for clients who can't go down. Ask what a full exit from Datto Cloud costs before you commit.

Best for Microsoft 365 and SaaS data

Keepit

3.7/5

Keepit doesn't back up servers. It protects SaaS data, Microsoft 365 first. It keeps four copies of every item across two data centers, with unlimited storage. For MSPs it offers a ready-to-use Partner Management Console, an API and partner discounts.

It earns its spot for one reason: Microsoft guarantees its service is up, not that your client's data comes back. Keepit puts that copy with an independent provider. The limits are plain: no public price, nothing for servers or endpoints, so you'll run a second tool for the rest of the estate.

Standout features
  • Partner Management Console
  • Four copies in two data centers
  • Four copies across two data centers
+Pros
  • ✓Unlimited storage
  • ✓Copy outside Microsoft's cloud
  • ✓API for automation
−Cons
  • ✗No public pricing
  • ✗No servers or endpoints
  • ✗One more tool to manage
Verdict

A strong add-on for Microsoft 365 if your main platform handles it poorly. On its own, it only protects part of the client.

Cost and margin

What backup really costs you, and what you bill back

For an MSP, the license is half the story. Storage, minimum commitments and how you pass costs through decide whether backup makes money.

Worked example: 50 workloads and 5 TB

NAKIVO on an annual plan: 50 × $1.85 = $92.50 a month in licenses. Add storage: 5 × $7.99 = $39.95 a month on Wasabi, or 5 × $6.95 = $34.75 on Backblaze B2. Total: roughly $127 to $132 a month. With Cove, Acronis or Datto, storage sits inside the quote, so compare their full quote to that total, not the per-device line alone.

Bundled storage vs bring your own

Cove pools storage across all your clients; Acronis pools it per client with per-workload quotas. NAKIVO and Comet let you choose. BYO storage looks cheaper on paper, but you own the capacity alerts, minimum retention charges and egress fees.

The fine print on cloud storage

Wasabi charges nothing for egress or API calls, but its pay-as-you-go plan has a 90-day minimum storage duration: delete a copy sooner and you pay for it anyway. Backblaze B2 has no minimum duration, and egress is free up to three times your average monthly storage, then $0.01 per GB. A large restore can change the math.

Data residency

Wasabi has EU regions in Paris, Frankfurt, Amsterdam and Milan plus two in the UK; Backblaze's EU region sits in Amsterdam. Acronis runs a data center in Strasbourg, Keepit keeps four copies across two data centers. For Cove, ask sales which region you get. Put the region in your client contract: it's the first thing a regulated client asks.
  • Count workloads per client: servers, endpoints, VMs, Microsoft 365 users.
  • Get the minimum monthly commitment in writing before you sign.
  • Model total cost with storage, over two years.
  • Make sure your PSA can pull usage for billing.
  • Lock the data region for each client.
  • Keep an immutable or offline copy in the mix.
MSP playbook

Six moves to sell backup that stays profitable

What MSPs share on forums, and what rate cards leave out.

01

Sell a bundle, buy per workload

Margin

Your cost scales with machines, but clients want a stable invoice. Sell a per-device and per-server bundle with a volume tier, and keep the gap between your real cost and your price as margin. Re-price once a year, not every time a laptop shows up.

Re-price
Once a year
02

Negotiate on your whole book

Negotiation

Datto prices SaaS Protection on all licenses across all your clients, and Acronis uses tiered discounts. Quote your total volume, not the first client you migrate. With Cove, ask for a multi-year price lock on the first quote.

Ask for
Multi-year price lock
03

Watch Wasabi's 90-day minimum

Gotcha

Keep 30 days of dailies on Wasabi pay-as-you-go and every copy you delete before day 90 is billed as if it stayed. Set retention to 90 days or more, or use Backblaze B2, which has no minimum duration.

Rule
Retention of 90 days or more
04

Turn on immutability wherever you can

Ransomware

An attacker who takes over your console can wipe every client's backups in one go. With Comet, target an S3 bucket with Object Lock. Enforce MFA on every console and use a dedicated admin account for backup only.

Minimum
MFA on every console
05

Price the exit before the entry

Contract

A trap that keeps coming up: with a proprietary cloud, restoring outside the vendor's ecosystem gets expensive. Before signing, ask in writing how you'd pull all of a client's data out, in what format and at what cost. Your client will ask you the same question if they leave.

Get
Exit cost in writing
06

Restore one client per quarter

Must-do

Pick a random client each quarter and restore a full server or mailbox into a sandbox. Time it. That number belongs in your contract, and it beats any promise.

FAQ · 8 questions

Cloud backup for MSPs · FAQ

  • How should an MSP price backup to clients?
Most MSPs sell a per-device, per-server and per-Microsoft 365 user bundle, reviewed yearly. Your cost follows workloads or volume, your client wants a fixed number. Pick a platform that pushes usage into your PSA: Cove does it through its PSA integrations.
  • Do MSPs need to back up Microsoft 365?
Yes. Microsoft is responsible for keeping the service running, and your client is responsible for their data. Deletions, mistakes and ransomware hit OneDrive and SharePoint too. Cove, Acronis, Comet, Datto and Keepit all cover it; Datto SaaS Protection runs three times a day.
  • Vendor storage or bring your own?
Vendor storage keeps it simple: one price, nothing to watch. Your own storage (Wasabi, Backblaze B2, an on-prem box) lowers cost and keeps you free to switch software later. Check minimum durations and egress fees before you choose.
  • How much does MSP cloud backup cost?
Only two vendors publish prices: NAKIVO from $1.85 per workload per month on an annual plan, and Comet from $2 per endpoint per month. For 50 workloads and 5 TB on NAKIVO, budget about $127 to $132 a month including storage. Everyone else is quote only.
  • Where is backup data stored?
It depends on the tool and your settings. Wasabi offers EU regions including Paris and Frankfurt, Backblaze has an EU region in Amsterdam, and Acronis runs a Strasbourg data center; for Cove, ask sales which region you get. Set the region when you create the tenant and write it into the contract.
  • What is a multi-tenant backup console?
One interface where each client gets an isolated space with its own machines, policies and permissions. You see every failed job at a glance. NAKIVO supports up to 100 tenants per deployment, and Comet uses one tenant account per client.
  • Appliance or direct-to-cloud backup?
An appliance, like Datto SIRIS, restores fast on site and keeps a cloud copy. Direct-to-cloud costs less and needs no hardware, but a full restore depends on the client's internet line. For a client who can't go down, the appliance earns its keep.
  • Can I white-label backup as my own service?
Yes, with Comet. Your logo shows in the agent and the console. That helps you sell backup as an in-house service, and keeps the client relationship yours if you change storage later.
