What is the best referral software for an online store in 2026?
The one that rewards real advocates without handing your margin to coupon hunters. Costs run from $0 to more than 10% of referred sales: commission and fraud controls make the difference.
A referral program gives each customer a link or code to share. Their friend gets a discount on a first order, and the customer earns a reward once that order clears: store credit, points, sometimes cash. Shopify has no built-in referral program, so you need an app, or a plugin on WooCommerce and PrestaShop.
The short answer: Yotpo is the most complete pick, and its free plan already includes referrals plus fraud blocking by IP and billing address. BON Loyalty is the best value for a small Shopify store: free up to 150 orders a month with an anti-cheat referral program. ReferralCandy is still the referral specialist, running on Shopify, WooCommerce, BigCommerce, Squarespace and Magento, but it takes a cut of referred sales. On WooCommerce, the Coupon Referral Program extension does the job for $49 a year.
We compared what each app puts in its cheapest plan, what it charges once the program works, and what merchants complain about in their one-star reviews.
Our ranking is editorial: a sponsored spot is always labeled on its card, and no affiliate link ever changes a score.

The full ranking. The "referrals at entry price" column shows what you actually get on the cheapest plan that includes a referral program. That is where these apps differ most, because some keep referrals for paid tiers only. Shopify apps bill in US dollars every 30 days.

How we compared and scored
The top results for this search are mostly vendor blogs ranking their own app first, or short lists of six Shopify apps with outdated prices. None compares fraud protection side by side, none says which free plans actually include referrals, and almost none covers WooCommerce or PrestaShop.
We read the official pricing pages, the Shopify App Store and WooCommerce marketplace listings, vendor help docs on referral settings, then merchants' one-star reviews and Shopify Community threads. An app only made the ranking if its referral program for online stores is confirmed on an official page.
Some tools stayed out. Friendbuy and Mention Me target large brands and do not publish prices: if you run a big DTC brand, ask both for a quote. Referral Factory (from $200 a month) is built for service businesses tied to a CRM. Loyoly prices in pounds without naming its platforms. Stamped is mainly a reviews tool.
Value for money and depth of features carry the most weight. A referral program lives or dies on the real cost per referred customer and on how many codes leak to strangers.

Yotpo Loyalty & Referrals
Yotpo Loyalty & Referrals bundles points, VIP tiers and referrals in one app. For referrals, the selling point is the free plan: it already includes the refer-a-friend program and fraud protection that blocks suspicious referrals by user agent, IP address and billing address. That is the most direct fix for self-referral, when a shopper opens a second account to collect their own reward.
It also covers more platforms than anything else here: Shopify and Shopify Plus, BigCommerce, Adobe Commerce, Salesforce Commerce Cloud, WooCommerce, Volusion, plus an API for headless builds. Referrals work in-store too through Shopify POS.
Pricing needs a closer look. Pro starts at $199 a month with 500 orders covered, then Yotpo bills each extra order: $0.20 from order 501 to 1,000, $0.10 up to 3,000, $0.05 up to 10,000. A store doing 1,000 orders a month pays $299. The pricing table also shows "$0" next to those per-order rates, so get the number confirmed in writing before you upgrade.
- Referrals and fraud rules on the free plan
- Widest platform coverage, WooCommerce included
- Works in-store with Shopify POS
- ✓Blocks cheaters by IP, user agent and billing address
- ✓Loyalty, VIP and referrals in one app
- ✓Scales to enterprise without a migration
- ✗Jumps from $0 to $199 with nothing in between
- ✗Per-order billing above 500 orders
- ✗Ambiguous pricing table on the official page
The best starting point if you want a protected referral program for free and an app that grows with you. If you know you will outgrow the free plan this year, price Pro at 1,000 orders against BON or Smile first.
BON Loyalty
BON Loyalty holds a 5.0 rating on the Shopify App Store across nearly 2,000 reviews. Its free plan covers 150 orders a month and includes what BON calls an "anti-cheat" referral program, which is rare at that price. The app runs in English, German, Spanish, French and Japanese.
Tiers climb gently: $15 for 300 orders, $29 for 500 with Shopify POS, then $129 for unlimited orders and VIP tiers. Annual billing cuts the bill ($324 instead of $348 for Basic). No commission on your sales.
The limit: BON lives on Shopify only, and its advanced features (segments, deep marketing integrations) are thinner than Yotpo's or LoyaltyLion's. Once loyalty becomes a real channel, with Klaviyo flows driven by points balances, you may outgrow it.
- Anti-cheat referrals on the free plan
- Gentle tiers from $15 to $129
- Five interface languages
- ✓Best value score in our ranking
- ✓No commission on sales
- ✓Cheaper with annual billing
- ✗Shopify only
- ✗Fewer integrations than pricier suites
- ✗Free plan capped at 150 orders a month
The default pick for a Shopify store launching referrals. Install the free plan, switch on the anti-cheat settings, and only pay once you pass 150 orders.
LoyaltyLion
LoyaltyLion comes from points-based loyalty and treats referrals as one piece of the program: the referrer earns points or a voucher, the friend gets a discount, and everything lands in the customer profile. Its strength is the Klaviyo integration, where points balances, tiers and referrals become segment filters for your emails.
The free plan is recommended up to 400 orders a month, the highest free threshold in this ranking. Classic jumps to $199 for 500 orders. One rule to know: if you exceed your volume by more than 25% for three months in a row, LoyaltyLion reviews your plan. Plan for Black Friday.
Two limits. LoyaltyLion is Shopify only (Plus and POS included). And its pricing page does not say which referral features sit in which plan, nor mention any fraud controls, so ask in the demo before you launch a generous offer.
- Highest free threshold: 400 orders a month
- Deep Klaviyo integration
- Supports Shopify Plus and POS
- ✓Referrals tied to points and VIP tiers
- ✓Data you can use in email flows
- ✓Generous free plan for a mid-size store
- ✗Shopify only
- ✗No fraud controls on the pricing page
- ✗Plan review after three months over volume
Pick it if Klaviyo is the heart of your marketing: referrals become one more signal in your segments. For referrals alone, BON or Smile do the same job for less.
Rivo
Rivo is a newer Shopify-only app aimed at brands that sweat the details. The program runs white-label on your store domain, so customers never see a third-party name. Referral rewards are customizable, and the Scale plan covers 200 to 2,500 orders a month with up to 250,000 members.
Scale starts at $49 a month, no contract, with a 7-day trial and three physical locations. Plus runs $499. Multi-level referrals, where the referrer also earns on their friends' referrals, sit in the custom tier only.
Watch one trap: some Rivo blog posts mention a free plan up to 200 orders. It does not appear on the official pricing page, so budget $49 from day one.
- White-label program on your domain
- Customizable referral rewards
- No contract, 7-day trial
- ✓Clean, on-brand experience
- ✓Wide Scale tier: 200 to 2,500 orders
- ✓Physical stores included (3 locations)
- ✗No free plan on the pricing page
- ✗Jump from $49 to $499
- ✗Multi-level referrals by quote only
Right for a brand that wants referrals invisible on the tech side and very visible on the brand side. On a tight budget, start with BON and move to Rivo when looks matter more than $49.
ReferralCandy
ReferralCandy has done one thing since 2010: referral programs for online stores. It runs on Shopify, BigCommerce, WooCommerce, Squarespace and Magento 2, and on custom stores through email, a script or the API. Every feature is in every plan: unlimited campaigns, rewards as discounts, cash, Shopify store credit, free products or tiers, and compatibility with Recharge and Bold subscriptions.
It also has the most detailed fraud tooling in this ranking: blocks on self-referral, existing customers and already-referred friends, alerts on look-alike contact details and repeat purchases from one IP, rewards held until the return window closes, flagged cases held 14 days, and a weekly fraud report. A neat touch: the offer is hidden when someone opens their own link.
The price takes some math. ReferralCandy charges a percentage of sales from the new customers it brings, on their first three orders: 10.5% on Basic, 3.5% on Grow. From roughly $570 of referred sales a month, Grow is cheaper than Basic. One-star reviews cite slow support, cancellation by email request, a commission that adds up, and one UK merchant calling the fraud prevention useless.
- Most complete fraud tooling in the ranking
- Shopify, WooCommerce, BigCommerce, Squarespace, Magento
- Every feature on every plan
- ✓Referral specialist since 2010
- ✓Reward held through the return window
- ✓No contract, trial sales commission-free
- ✗10.5% commission on Basic
- ✗Commission compounds as you grow
- ✗Slow support in several reviews
Pick it if you want referrals and nothing else, or if you are not on Shopify. Run the commission math first: past a few hundred dollars of referred sales a month, Grow beats Basic.
Smile.io
Smile.io is one of the best-known loyalty apps on Shopify, with more than 4,600 App Store reviews. Referrals are included on every plan, including the free one that covers 200 orders a month. You can launch points and referrals in an afternoon, and the defaults already look clean. It works with Shopify POS.
The tiers climb fast: $15 for 500 orders, $79 for 1,000, $199 for 2,500. One-star reviews describe those jumps: a merchant charged $79 while believing they were on free, another pushed toward $199, a third whose cost exceeded the sales Smile generated.
The bigger issue is fraud. The pricing page lists no protection, and a store that had used Smile for two years reported finding more than 12,000 discount codes created through the app and posted on coupon sites, with no alert. If you choose Smile, set single-use, new-customer-only codes yourself.
- Referrals on the free plan
- Live in a few hours
- Shopify POS support
- ✓More than 4,600 Shopify App Store reviews
- ✓Free up to 200 orders a month
- ✓Points and referrals in one dashboard
- ✗No fraud protection listed
- ✗Price jumps from $15 to $79 to $199
- ✗Shopify and BigCommerce only
Great for launching without paying or overthinking. But watch your codes from month one: without guardrails, a referral code ends up on a deals site fast.
Growave
Growave is a suite: product reviews, wishlists, loyalty points and referrals in one Shopify app. If you are stacking subscriptions, it cuts the bill and the scripts slowing your theme. The app ships in 16 languages.
Read the free plan carefully. Growave now has one, up to 200 orders a month, but referrals and fraud protection only appear from the Entry plan, at $15 a month for 500 orders. Beyond that, each block of 100 orders costs $20. Growth jumps to $199 for 1,500 orders, Plus to $499 for 3,000.
Negative reviews hit two points: one merchant's price going from about $49 to $200 a month, and uninstalls that leave traces (a charge after removal, leftover theme code that broke the buy button). One user found the Spanish translation incomplete.
- Reviews, loyalty, wishlist and referrals in one app
- 16 interface languages
- 14-day trial
- ✓One app instead of three
- ✓Entry at $15 with fraud protection
- ✓Overage priced per 100 orders
- ✗No referrals on the free plan
- ✗Jump from $15 to $199
- ✗Uninstall can leave code behind, per reviews
Worth it if you also want reviews and loyalty: referrals come as part of the suite. For referrals alone, BON or Smile give them away for free.
Gameball
Gameball leans on game mechanics: badges, challenges, a prize wheel and VIP levels keep customers coming back, and referrals are part of that loop. The free plan includes them. The app runs in English, French, Spanish and Arabic, and reviewers describe the support as responsive.
Starter costs $34 a month for 1,000 orders, with five VIP tiers and the prize wheel. Pro runs $159 with unlimited tiers and recency, frequency and monetary segments. The free plan caps at 100 "MRCs", a unit the App Store listing never clearly defines, so ask support what it counts before relying on it.
Two caveats: the listing mentions no fraud protection, and several merchants find Pro expensive. Gameball also has far fewer reviews than BON or Smile, so there is less track record.
- Gamified loyalty with referrals inside
- Arabic, French and Spanish interface
- Responsive support in reviews
- ✓Referrals on the free plan
- ✓Game mechanics the others lack
- ✓Starter at $34 for 1,000 orders
- ✗Free plan unit ("MRC") is unclear
- ✗No fraud protection listed
- ✗Pro seen as pricey
Pick it if your audience responds to games more than to a plain discount. For a classic store, BON or Smile are simpler to run.
Coupon Referral Program
Coupon Referral Program, built by WP Swings and sold on the official WooCommerce marketplace, adds coupon-based referrals to your WordPress store. Referrers get a dashboard in their account, friends get a code, and you export everything to CSV or through the REST API. It works with Points and Rewards and WooCommerce Subscriptions, with one active reward at a time.
The price is hard to beat: $49 for a year of updates and support, $78.40 for two years, refundable within 30 days. No commission. Fraud controls cover the basics: IP restrictions, checks on emails already used, blocking disposable email domains, single-use coupons.
The catch comes from reviews: about one in eight is one star, with a specific complaint. Referral coupons can ignore your store's general rules (minimum order, no stacking, expiry date). Test every rule on a real order before launch, and expect slow support.
- $49 a year, no commission
- Single-use coupons and email domain blocking
- Works with WooCommerce Subscriptions
- ✓Cheapest yearly cost in the ranking
- ✓Data stays in your own site, CSV export
- ✓30-day refund
- ✗Coupons can bypass your discount rules
- ✗Slow support in reviews
- ✗Less polished than Shopify apps
The obvious pick on WooCommerce if you want to pay once a year. For more features and stronger fraud tools, Yotpo and ReferralCandy also run on WooCommerce, at a higher price.
What your referral program really costs, and where it goes wrong
The app fee is only part of the bill. Three lines matter more: the reward you give, the commission when the app takes one, and the codes that end up with strangers.
The reward comes first
ReferralCandy's commission
Tier jumps
Sales tax and multiple stores
- Work out the cost per referred customer: referrer reward + friend discount + any commission.
- Check the free plan really includes referrals, not just points.
- Hold the referrer's reward until the return window closes.
- Limit the friend's code to new customers and a single order.
- Pick your tier on your busiest month, not your average.
- After uninstalling, check your theme and any codes still live.
Six settings that protect your program
Referral programs attract deal hunters. Merchants who post about it lose more money to leaked codes than to the app fee. Here is what keeps coming up, whatever app you use.
The settings
Hold the referrer's reward
FraudOnly pay out once the return window has passed. Otherwise a shopper orders with their own code, collects the reward, then sends the parcel back. ReferralCandy holds rewards through the return period automatically and freezes flagged cases for 14 days. Elsewhere, look for a "validation delay" setting.
- ReferralCandy hold on flagged cases
- 14 days
Only buyers can refer
LeaksAn open link ends up on coupon sites. The clearest case: one store found more than 12,000 codes created through its referral app and posted online. Restrict referrer status to customers who have already ordered. Some tools have this option but leave it off by default.
- Leaked codes at a single store
- 12,000+
One code, one order, one new customer
DiscountsSet the friend's code to work once, on a first order, and not stack with your other promotions. On WooCommerce, merchants have seen referral coupons ignore their minimum order and no-stacking rules, so test with a real order before launch.
- Rules to check
- Minimum, stacking, expiry
Block duplicate accounts
FraudThe classic cheat opens a second account with another email to refer themselves. The tools that stop it best cross-check IP address, user agent and billing address, as Yotpo does on its free plan. On WooCommerce, Coupon Referral Program restricts by IP and blocks disposable email domains.
- Fraud rules on a free plan
- Yotpo, BON Loyalty
Test with native Shopify discounts
ShopifyShopify has no built-in referral program, but native discounts can be limited to a customer segment. Some merchants use that to test an offer by hand before installing an app: a code for one segment, sent by email. No referrer tracking, but it tells you whether anyone cares about the offer.
- Cost
- $0
Uninstall cleanly
TrapRemoving a loyalty app does not always remove its code. Merchants have been left with a theme script that broke the buy button, or discount codes still live. Before uninstalling, switch the program off and list codes in circulation, then check your theme and active discounts after removal. Watch next month's bill too.
- Check after removal
- Theme, codes, billing

Ecommerce referral software · FAQ
Is there a free referral app for Shopify?
Yes, several. Smile includes referrals on its free plan up to 200 orders a month, BON Loyalty up to 150 orders with anti-cheat rules, and Yotpo and Gameball on their free plans. Careful with Growave: it has a free plan, but referrals only come with Entry at $15 a month.Does Shopify have a built-in referral program?
No. Shopify has no native referral feature, so you need an app. To test an offer without installing anything, create a native discount limited to a customer segment and email it, but you will get no referrer links or tracking. How much should I give the referrer and the friend?
As much as the margin on the friend's first order allows. Many stores start with a double-sided reward such as $10 each. Add both amounts and compare them to the gross margin on your average order: if the total is higher, lower the offer or set a minimum spend for the friend.Referral program or loyalty program: which first?
Loyalty first if few customers come back, referrals first if your customers already rave about you. Most apps in this ranking do both, so you can reward referrers in points rather than discounts and bring them back to buy.How do I stop customers from referring themselves?
Use a tool that blocks by IP, user agent or billing address, and hold rewards until the return window closes. Yotpo and ReferralCandy do this automatically. Also limit the friend's code to new customers and one order.Do I need terms and conditions for a referral program?
Yes, publish them. Say who can refer, what each side earns, when rewards are paid, and that you can reject suspicious referrals or change the offer. Large companies' referral terms all ban self-referral: do the same.Which referral software works with WooCommerce?
Coupon Referral Program at $49 a year is the cheapest. Yotpo and ReferralCandy also support WooCommerce for more features and stronger fraud controls. Smile, BON, LoyaltyLion, Rivo and Growave are Shopify-first and do not.Do referral apps take a commission on sales?
ReferralCandy does: from 10.5% on Basic down to 0.25% on Enterprise, on each referred customer's first three orders. The other apps here charge a flat fee based on order volume, and Coupon Referral Program a fixed $49 a year.
