What is the best local rank tracker in 2026?
Your Google Maps ranking changes from one street to the next. A good tracker shows you the map. A bad one hands you a comforting average.
You search "dentist near me" from your front desk and you're number one. A patient two miles east doesn't see you in the map pack at all. That's how local search works: in the local pack (the three listings with a map at the top of Google) and on Google Maps, rankings depend on where the searcher stands. A local rank tracker measures that for you, keyword by keyword, neighborhood by neighborhood.
The short answer. Local Falcon is the best tool for a geogrid, a grid of search points around your business, from $24.99 a month for 7,500 credits. BrightLocal is the most complete local suite at $41 a month for one location ($31 billed yearly). Semrush makes sense if you already pay for it: its local add-on runs $30 per location per month. Whitespark is the cheapest way to track lots of keywords across cities, from $14 a month. SE Ranking bundles local tracking into a $129 SEO suite.
What most "best of" lists skip, often because the vendor wrote them: grid tools bill in credits, and credits burn fast. A 9x9 grid, run daily on 10 keywords, eats 24,300 credits a month. We run that math for every tool below.
The ranking is editorial: a sponsored spot is always labeled on its card, and no affiliate link changes a score.

How we compared and scored
This page is for the owner of a local business or practice, the marketing lead at a small chain, and the consultant or agency that tracks Google Business Profiles for clients. It isn't for a 500-store brand buying Yext or Uberall with an onboarding project: those platforms manage listings at scale, and rank tracking is one feature among many.
We read every vendor's pricing page plan by plan to see what the price actually buys: number of locations, number of keywords, grid size, update frequency, and whether unused credits roll over. Then we went through user feedback, mostly on local SEO forums, starting with the complaints. One point comes up again and again: two tools never report exactly the same rank at the same grid point, because each one queries Google its own way (radius, zoom level, grid shape).
The weights follow what matters to a local business. Geo tracking counts for 35%: local pack, Google Maps and above all the grid, the only view that shows how distance changes your rank street by street. Real price per location counts for 25%, worked out on a realistic setup, credits included. Accuracy counts for 15%, reporting and white label (client-ready reports with your logo) for 15%, ease of use for 10%.
Semrush already has a full review on our site, so it keeps its 4.2 overall score and its per-criterion scores from that review. Places Scout and Local Viking don't show a readable price, and AccuRanker's official pages don't describe local tracking, so they get a card further down without a score.

Local Falcon
Local Falcon does one job and does it better than anyone here: the geogrid. You drop your business in the center, pick a grid from 3x3 to 21x21 points, and the tool runs a Google Maps search from every point. You get a heat map: green where you show in the top three, red where you don't show at all. City-level trackers can't show this, because they boil it down to one number.
Pricing follows one rule: 1 credit equals 1 grid point. A 9x9 grid costs 81 credits per keyword. Starter gives you 7,500 credits a month for $24.99, enough for 10 keywords on a 9x9 grid once a week (81 x 10 x 4 = 3,240 credits). Run that same grid daily and you need 24,300 credits, which means moving up the plans, as high as 63,000 credits for $199.99. The tool covers Google Maps and, according to its own pages, Apple Maps.
Users praise how easy it is to read: anyone gets a Local Falcon map in ten seconds, clients included. Price is the top complaint, followed by slow scans on very large grids and data connections that sometimes need reconnecting.
The catch: you buy credits, not locations, and the pricing page doesn't say how many locations each plan covers. On monthly billing, unused credits don't roll over, per the vendor's help center; yearly credits do. Pay-as-you-go credits ($0.05 each) never expire, but cost about fifteen times more than Starter credits. The read API and the Looker Studio and Zapier integrations need yearly Starter or a plan above monthly Starter.
Tip: the 100 free credits at signup cover one 9x9 scan on your main keyword. Run it before you pay anything: one map tells you whether you have a neighborhood problem or a whole-city problem. Falcon AI, which writes commentary on a report, costs 25 credits per run, so save it for client deliverables.
- Google Maps grids from 3x3 to 21x21 points
- 1 credit per point, easy math
- Yearly credits roll over, pay-as-you-go credits never expire
- ✓Clearest heat map on the market
- ✓Entry plan at $24.99 a month
- ✓100 free credits, no card
- ✗Monthly credits expire at month end
- ✗Locations per plan not listed
- ✗Large grids are slow to run
The pick if your real question is "where do I show up on the map?" Spend the 100 free credits first, then run Starter on a weekly schedule.
BrightLocal
BrightLocal is more than a rank tracker. It's a local SEO suite: rank tracking, grid scans, review management and citations (your name, address and phone number listed on other sites). Even the cheapest plan, Track, follows up to 100 keywords and 4 competitors per location across the local pack, Google Maps and organic results.
It has a grid too (Local Search Grid), capped at 5 keywords on Track. That's the real split with Local Falcon: BrightLocal gives you the wide view of a listing, Local Falcon the close-up of the map. For a business that watches 30 keywords and only needs the map on the 3 or 4 that pay the bills, that balance works.
Pricing is per location, which keeps it readable: $41 a month for one, $31 on yearly billing, or $369 a year. Yearly saves about 25%. The 6-10 location tier costs $83 a month ($62 yearly), so $8.30 per location at the top of the tier. BrightLocal has announced a 2026 increase: about 5% on Track and 10% on Manage and Grow.
The catch: accuracy is debated. Reviews are overwhelmingly positive, but on local SEO forums one multi-location user says their rankings have been off for months, and the grid burns through credits quickly. Several reviews also call the interface busy, with a lot to learn. Update frequency isn't stated on the pricing page.
Tip: during the 14-day trial, run the same keyword in BrightLocal and on Local Falcon's 100 free credits. If both maps tell the same story, keep the tool whose reports your clients actually read.
- Local pack, Maps and organic tracked per location
- Grid on 5 keywords from Track
- Reviews, citations and white-label reports
- ✓Clear per-location pricing
- ✓Very complete client reports
- ✓14-day trial without a card
- ✗Grid capped at 5 keywords on Track
- ✗Accuracy questioned on some accounts
- ✗Price increase announced for 2026
The right call for an agency or chain that wants all of local SEO in one place, reports included. For street-level maps, pair it with a dedicated grid tool.
Semrush
Semrush covers local in two places. The first is its SEO suite: Position Tracking also reports the local pack, every day. The SEO plan, at $139 a month, tracks 500 keywords across 5 projects at country or region level; city and device-level tracking only comes with Pro+ at $299. The second is Semrush Local, a separate subscription that adds the Google Maps grid (Map Rank Tracker) and listing management.
Semrush Local is priced per location: $30 a month on Local Base with 375 grid credits, $60 on Local Pro with 1,225. As with Local Falcon, 1 credit equals 1 point per keyword, so a 5x5 grid costs 25 credits. Local Base gives you 15 of those a month: 3 keywords checked weekly. Credits reset on the 1st of each month.
Map Rank Tracker has a free tier: one campaign, 50 credits a month, one 5x5 grid on one keyword, updated weekly. That's enough to watch your main keyword at no cost.
The catch: costs stack up. If you use both, the local add-on sits on top of the SEO plan, and $30 per location becomes $300 a month for 10 locations. Two official Semrush help pages list different credit amounts for the entry plan, so check the number at checkout. On forums, one practitioner says Semrush's grid never matched other tools or their own manual checks.
Tip: in Map Rank Tracker, switch off grid points that fall on water, a park or an area with no customers. Every disabled point is a credit you can spend on another keyword.
- Maps grid and local pack in the same account as your SEO
- Free Map Rank Tracker for 1 keyword
- Grid points can be disabled to save credits
- ✓All your SEO in one place
- ✓Free tier for the grid
- ✓Daily, weekly or monthly scans
- ✗Local add-on billed per location
- ✗Credits reset every month
- ✗Grid accuracy disputed by practitioners
Makes sense if Semrush is already your SEO tool. If local tracking is all you need, it's expensive: Local Falcon or BrightLocal do more for less.
Whitespark
Whitespark counts differently: in "location keywords", one keyword tracked in one place. "Plumber" in Austin and "plumber" in Round Rock are two location keywords. In return, domains and locations are unlimited. For a chain of 10 offices tracking 10 keywords each, 100 location keywords is enough, which is the Small Business plan at $14 a month, weekly, billed yearly.
It tracks Google and Bing, desktop and mobile, up to 100 results deep. You pick weekly or daily updates. Daily costs about 40% more ($20 instead of $14 on Small Business). For a single business, weekly is plenty: local rankings don't move enough day to day to justify the gap.
On local SEO forums, Whitespark comes up as a solid multi-location tracker with a clean interface.
The catch: the grid isn't part of the Local Rank Tracker. It's sold separately as Local Ranking Grids, from $10 a month, up to 225 points per grid. Without it you see your rank from the center of a city, not how it shifts street by street. Reports are simpler than BrightLocal's.
Tip: start on weekly with yearly billing. You can switch individual keywords to daily later, for the few weeks around a listing overhaul or an office move.
- Billed per location keyword, unlimited domains and locations
- Google and Bing, mobile and desktop
- Weekly or daily updates
- ✓Cheapest option for many keywords
- ✓Great for multi-location
- ✓Clean interface
- ✗Grid sold separately
- ✗Simpler reports
- ✗No grid in the base tool
Best price per keyword in this ranking. Add the grid only for the 2 or 3 keywords that drive your revenue.
SE Ranking
SE Ranking is an SEO suite like Semrush, but local comes in the box. Core, at $129 a month ($103.20 yearly), tracks 2,000 keywords daily and adds 3 locations, 1,500 keywords in its Local and Map Rank Tracker and listing management across 100+ directories worldwide. Growth raises tracking to 5,000 keywords.
Local tracking is set by city or ZIP code. Google Maps is tracked in the top 20, weekly or monthly. That tells you whether a listing is climbing in a city, not where it drops off between two neighborhoods.
For an agency that needs an SEO suite anyway, the math works: 3 locations and 1,500 local keywords included for less than Semrush's SEO plan, with no add-on. Each extra location starts at $18.40.
The catch: its pages mention no grid. On local SEO forums, practitioners rate SE Ranking as weak on local compared with dedicated tools. And Maps updates weekly at best.
Tip: use SE Ranking for steady city-level tracking, and run a one-off grid (Local Falcon's 100 credits or Semrush's free Map Rank Tracker) once a quarter to see the map.
- 3 locations and 1,500 local keywords from Core
- 100+ directories included
- Full SEO suite
- ✓No separate local subscription
- ✓Cheaper entry than the big suites
- ✓14-day trial
- ✗No grid
- ✗Maps weekly at best
- ✗Rated weak on local by practitioners
Good if you're buying an SEO suite first and local is a bonus. Too much tool for a single shop.
What local rank tracking really costs for 1 business and for 10 locations
Grid tools bill in credits, the rest per location or per keyword. To compare them, use one formula: grid size x keywords x scans per month. A 9x9 grid is 81 points; weekly means about 4 scans a month. Here are the setups we see most.
1 business, 10 keywords
Whitespark weekly: $14 a month billed yearly, no grid. Local Falcon Starter: $24.99, enough for a weekly 9x9 grid on all 10 keywords (3,240 of 7,500 credits). BrightLocal Track: $31 yearly, grid on 5 keywords. Semrush Local Base: $30, but 375 credits only cover a weekly 5x5 grid on 3 keywords.
10 locations, 10 keywords each
Whitespark: 100 location keywords, still $14 a month yearly. BrightLocal: $62 yearly for 6 to 10 locations. SE Ranking Core: $129 with 3 locations, plus 7 more from $18.40 each. Semrush Local Base: $300. Local Falcon on a weekly 7x7 grid: 19,600 credits a month, so a plan above Starter.
The daily trap
Going from weekly to daily multiplies usage by seven. A daily 9x9 grid on 10 keywords: 24,300 credits a month. At Local Falcon's pay-as-you-go rate ($0.05), that would be $1,215. For one business, weekly is almost always enough.
- Is pricing per location, per keyword or in credits?
- Do unused credits roll over to next month?
- Is the grid included or sold as an add-on?
- Is Google Maps tracked separately from the local pack?
- Can reports carry your agency's logo?
- Is there a trial without a sales call?
Other local rank trackers
These tools come up a lot on local SEO forums. We don't rank them, either because the price isn't readable or because we couldn't verify local tracking. Here's when they're still worth a look.
Other tools
AccuRanker: volume, priced in euros
Not rankedAccuRanker is a rank tracker built for volume, with daily updates and euro pricing: €224 a month for Professional (2,000 to 5,000 keywords), €764 for Expert. We don't rank it here: none of the official AccuRanker pages we could read describe local pack or Google Maps tracking. If your organic SEO already lives there, ask about it during the demo.

Places Scout: some practitioners' favorite grid
Quote onlyPlaces Scout runs Google Maps grids in several sizes or custom shapes, and organic grids too, which few tools do. On local SEO forums some call it the most accurate of the bunch and prefer it to BrightLocal's heat map. It lists no price, though: everything goes through a quote, so we can't rank it on real cost.

Local Viking: per-location grids, a brand in flux
Price unclearLocal Viking tracks Google Business Profiles on a grid, priced per location, with two separate credit pools: keywords and grids. A comparison written by a competitor complains the credits can't move between pools. Its pricing page now redirects to another brand with no readable amount, so wait for things to settle before you commit.

Rank Tracker (SEO PowerSuite): desktop software
DesktopRank Tracker installs on your computer and treats Google Maps as a separate search engine, with white-label reports. It's an older approach, but it suits people who want their data stored locally. Its pricing page didn't load during our comparison, so check the price before you choose.

Local Dominator, GTrack, Localo, GeoGrid: check them yourself
UnverifiedThese grid tools show up in a lot of "best local rank tracker" lists, many of them written by the vendors themselves, who rank themselves first. We couldn't verify their prices on an official pricing page. If one appeals to you, run it against Local Falcon on the same keyword during the trial.

Local rank tracking traps
Most disappointment doesn't come from a bad tool. It comes from misreading what the tool measures. These are the mistakes we keep running into.
Traps
Mixing up local pack, Google Maps and grid
Most commonThe local pack is the three listings with a map on Google's results page. Google Maps is the maps app, where the list runs much longer. A city-level tracker (SE Ranking, or Semrush's city-level tracking) gives you one rank from one point in town. Only a grid shows what happens street by street, where proximity decides everything.
- City-level
- One average rank
- Grid
- One rank per point
Paying for credits that vanish
Hidden costSemrush grid credits reset on the 1st of each month. Local Falcon's monthly credits don't roll over; yearly ones do. Buy for your real usage, not for your first excited month.
- Roll over
- Local Falcon yearly, pay-as-you-go
- Expire
- Semrush, Local Falcon monthly
Treating one grid point as the truth
ReliabilityRun two tools on the same keyword and the averages land close, but individual points differ. Each tool queries Google with its own radius, zoom and grid shape. Manual checks don't settle it either: your browser, device, IP address and time of day all change the result. Read trends over several weeks, never a single point.
- Read
- The trend
- Ignore
- A single point
Forgetting ads in the local pack
NewGoogle now shows sponsored listings inside the local pack on some searches. You can be first organically and fourth on screen. When your tracker offers a results screenshot, look at it, not just the number.
- Effect
- Lower visible rank
- Fix
- Check the screenshot
Finding out the grid costs extra
Hidden costWhitespark sells the grid separately (from $10 a month). Semrush puts it in Semrush Local, a subscription on top of the SEO suite. BrightLocal caps it at 5 keywords on Track. Before you sign, decide whether you need the map, and for how many keywords.

- Local Falcon, BrightLocal (5 keywords)
- Add-on

Underestimating per-location pricing
BudgetPer-location pricing looks cheap on one listing and adds up fast. Semrush Local at $30 per location is $300 a month for 10. Forum users who dropped Moz said the same thing: fine for one location, too expensive across many. Price your real number of locations before comparing.

Set up your local tracking right from month one
A badly configured tracker costs a lot and tells you little. These are the settings that keep coming up among practitioners who've tracked listings for years.
The steps
Start with a free grid
Before paying, run a grid on your main keyword: Local Falcon's 100 free credits cover one 9x9 scan, and Semrush's free Map Rank Tracker gives you a weekly 5x5. One map tells you whether the problem is one neighborhood or the whole city.
Pick a 5x5 or 7x7 grid
For a neighborhood business, 5x5 (25 points) or 7x7 (49 points) is enough. Past 81 points the map adds little and costs a lot more credits. Save large grids for a wide service area, like a contractor covering a whole county.
Track weekly
Local rankings move slowly. One scan a week shows the trend without waste. Switch to daily only around a specific event: an office move, a category change on your listing, a wave of new reviews.
Turn off useless points
A grid point over a lake, a forest or an industrial park with no customers teaches you nothing. Semrush lets you disable those points: each one you cut is a credit saved, on every keyword, every week.
Stick with one tool for history
Since every tool measures differently, switching breaks your trend line. Pick one and keep it at least six months. If you do have to move, our guides to switching from BrightLocal and switching from AccuRanker list the alternatives.
Track 3 or 4 competitors, no more
BrightLocal tracks up to 4 competitors per location on Track. That's the right number: the three listings ahead of you in the local pack, plus the one climbing fast. Beyond that, the useful signal drowns in charts nobody reads.

Your questions about local rank tracking
How do I track my Google Maps rankings for free?
Use Semrush's free Map Rank Tracker: one campaign, a 5x5 grid on one keyword, updated weekly. Local Falcon's 100 signup credits add a one-off 9x9 scan. Don't rely on searching Google yourself: your location, history and device skew the result.
What's the difference between the local pack and Google Maps?
The local pack is the block of three listings with a map on Google's results page. Google Maps is the maps app, where the list keeps going well past three. The two rankings usually look alike, but not always, which is why BrightLocal and SE Ranking track them separately.
How many grid points do I need?
For a neighborhood business, 25 to 49 points (a 5x5 or 7x7 grid). Past 81 points the map adds little and burns credits fast. Size the grid to your real customer area, not the whole metro.
How often should I check local rankings?
Weekly works for most businesses. Daily multiplies credit use by seven for moves that are often just noise. Go daily only around a big change to your listing, then drop back to weekly.
How accurate are geogrid rank trackers?
Accurate on trends, not on every single point. Each tool queries Google its own way, and two grids run on the same day often disagree on a few points. Stick with one tool over time and compare averages across several weeks.
Do I need Semrush or Ahrefs for local SEO?
Not for a single business. A dedicated tool like Local Falcon ($24.99) or Whitespark ($14) costs far less than Semrush's $139 SEO plan. A full suite makes sense once you're also working on your website, content and links.
Is BrightLocal or Local Falcon better?
Local Falcon if the map is what you need: bigger grids, credit-based, from $24.99. BrightLocal if you want rankings, reviews and citations in one place with client reports, from $31 a month yearly for one location.
Will a rank tracker improve my local rankings?
No, it measures them. What moves a listing is your primary category, your reviews, proximity and consistent business details across the web. The tracker tells you whether your work is paying off, and which neighborhoods to focus on.
