HireVue alternatives: where to go and how to leave cleanly

Five one-way video interview tools with readable pricing, one per reason to leave, and a six-step exit plan.

The short answer: Hireflix if you want simple one-way video with no AI scoring, at $75 a month. Willo if you open a few roles at a time and want to pay per role, no commitment, from £49. Hirevire if budget is tight, from $39 a month. Spark Hire if you want unlimited one-way and live interviews, at $249 a month up to 50 employees. TestGorilla if skills come first. HireVue publishes no price at all: everything goes through a demo.

The ranking is editorial: a sponsored spot is always labeled on its card, and no affiliate link changes a score.

The real reasons

Why teams leave HireVue, and what it means for you

HireVue is a serious tool for large employers: one-way video, assessments, high volume. Recruiters who use it daily rate it fairly well, around 4 out of 5 on the big review sites. For a small business, a mid-size company or an agency, though, the same six complaints keep coming up.

You only see the price in a demo

HireVue publishes no pricing. You request a demo, and plans depend on your headcount and interview volume. You can't budget before a sales call, while all five tools on this page list prices from $39 to $520 a month.

Candidates drop off

Plenty of candidates dislike one-way video: impersonal, stressful, and sometimes confusing when the practice question looks like the real one. On Reddit, a thread from a candidate refusing the format drew hundreds of supportive comments. Every candidate who quits is a profile you never see.

Support people say isn't there

On Trustpilot, HireVue sits at 2 out of 5 on 10 reviews, all one star, several saying they never got an answer. The sample is tiny and HireVue doesn't invite reviews there, so treat it as a signal, not a measure. Still, the same complaint shows up in a review that calls the product itself excellent.

AI scoring is now a compliance question

If you hire in the EU, the AI Act (Regulation 2024/1689, Annex III) lists AI systems meant for recruiting or selecting people as high risk, and those obligations are being phased in. In the UK, the AI Act isn't UK law, but UK GDPR still applies to candidate data. A tool that scores answers with AI may put deployer duties on you as the employer, such as informing candidates and keeping a human in control. A one-way video tool without automated scoring shrinks that scope. This isn't legal advice: check your case with your privacy lead.

A heavy setup

Several recruiters describe a hard initial onboarding, calls that drop, and notifications landing in candidates' spam folders. For a team of three recruiters, that setup time hurts far more than at a large company with a dedicated admin.

Your videos don't leave in one click

HireVue's help center documents downloadable reports, but no public export process for videos. When the subscription ends, data is deleted under your contract. If you need the interviews for a role still open, negotiate before the end date, not after.

The 5 alternatives

HireVue alternatives, tool by tool

For each tool: why switch to it, who it fits, its catch, how to move from HireVue, and what it costs. We only compared tools whose price you can read on the official pricing page. VidCruiter, often named next to HireVue, asks you to request pricing, so you'd land back in the same quote process you want to leave. It stays out of the ranking. Prices are in the currency each vendor shows.

01

Hireflix: pure one-way video, no AI scoring

Best for small teams

Why switch to Hireflix. Hireflix does one thing: one-way video interviews that your team watches and judges. No automated score on answers, so less AI paperwork to document. Pricing is public, with unlimited users, roles and responses. Reviewers also describe it as cheaper than HireVue and quicker to pay off.

Who it's for. A small or mid-size company replacing the first phone screen with video, on a fixed yearly budget.

Who it's not for. A team that wants automated candidate scores, or scheduled live interviews in the same tool.

The catch. The monthly price isn't shown: only yearly billing is priced, advertised as 50% cheaper than monthly. Above 250 employees, the Custom plan goes back to a quote.

How to move from HireVue. Use the 1-month trial to run one real role alongside HireVue. Rebuild your questions, record a short welcome message, and compare candidate response rates.

Pricing. Small at $75 a month (under 50 employees), Medium at $150 a month (50 to 250 employees), billed yearly; Custom on quote. 20% off the first year for nonprofits and companies under 2 years old.

Willo: pay per role, no commitment

Most flexible

Why switch to Willo. With HireVue you sign for volume. With Willo you pay for each active role, monthly, and stop when hiring is done. The Lite plan covers 5 roles, 150 candidates per role and 5 users. The UK team puts candidate experience first, which is exactly where HireVue gets the most criticism. Note that Lite also includes AI features (Willo Intelligence: transcripts, summaries, insights) and custom scorecards, which you can switch on or not.

Who it's for. A UK agency or small business that hires in waves: three roles this quarter, none the next.

Who it's not for. A team that needs SSO and an ATS integration from day one: those sit in Enterprise, billed yearly.

The catch. No free trial is mentioned on the pricing page. And per-role pricing adds up: 5 active roles all year come to £2,940, close to the Enterprise entry price.

How to move from HireVue. Open one role on Lite while HireVue is still running. If response rates hold, move the other roles one by one, and close each role once it's filled so you stop paying for it.

Pricing. Lite at £49 per active role per month, no commitment; Enterprise from £2,999 a year, with SSO, 12+ months of retention and ATS integrations. 50% off for charities.

Hirevire: the cheapest way in

Cheapest

Why switch to Hirevire. It's the lowest entry price on this page: $39 a month billed yearly for one role, one user and 300 interviews a year, capped at 25 a month. Tiers are easy to read, and the 7-day trial needs no credit card.

Who it's for. A freelancer, a small agency or a business hiring one or two roles at a time. The Agency plan (20 roles, 15 users) targets recruitment firms.

Who it's not for. A team that must keep videos for a long time without paying extra, or that wants live interviews.

The catch. Videos are stored for 90 days; each extra 90 days costs $9 a month. Factor that in if your retention policy is longer, though 90 days covers many hiring cycles.

How to move from HireVue. Start the 7-day trial on a simple role with your HireVue questions copied over. Then pick a tier by how many roles you run at once, not by yearly volume.

Pricing. Essentials $39 a month billed yearly ($49 monthly); Professional $99 ($149 monthly), 5 roles and 5 users; Agency $199 ($249 monthly), 20 roles and 15 users.

Spark Hire: unlimited one-way and live, up to 50 employees

One-way and live

Why switch to Spark Hire. Spark Hire covers unlimited one-way and live interviews, and on yearly billing, unlimited roles and users. But that price applies to companies with 50 employees or fewer: above that, it rises with headcount.

Who it's for. A small company or agency under 50 employees running lots of interviews that wants both formats in one tool. Spark Hire also sells an ATS, Recruit, from $335 a month up to 200 employees, yearly contract only.

Who it's not for. A mid-size company: public pricing stops at 50 employees. And a small business hiring three roles a year pays far more than at Hireflix or Hirevire.

The catch. No trial is mentioned on the pricing page, and prices are in USD plus taxes. Month to month, the plan goes up to $299 and caps at 5 roles and 5 users.

How to move from HireVue. Ask for a demo using your own questions, then move roles over one at a time. Live mode can also replace the first-round calls you ran outside HireVue.

Pricing. Video Interviews from $249 a month billed yearly (unlimited roles and users), or $299 a month billed monthly (5 roles, 5 users), for 50 employees or fewer, then by headcount; Recruit ATS from $335 a month up to 200 employees, billed yearly.

TestGorilla: skills tests before the video

Free plan

Why switch to TestGorilla. HireVue mixes video and assessment. If assessment matters most to you, TestGorilla flips the order: skills tests first, video second. It's also the only tool here with a permanent free plan. We rank it in our guide to switching from HackerRank too, at the same prices.

Who it's for. A business hiring across several roles that wants to screen on measured skills before watching any video.

Who it's not for. A team that only wants to replace one-way video: custom video questions are on the Plus plan only.

The catch. Custom video questions and AI interviews require Plus, from $520 a month. The free plan has some too, in limited amounts. If you're leaving HireVue to avoid AI scoring, check what you switch on.

How to move from HireVue. Start on the free plan with one role and one or two tests. Move to Plus only if you want video in the same tool; otherwise pair a TestGorilla test with Hireflix or Hirevire.

Pricing. Free at $0 (10 credits a month, limited video questions); Core from $215 a month; Plus from $520 a month, billed yearly (25% less than monthly).

5 alternatives against HireVue

For a rough sense of cost, take one full year on the smallest plan. Hirevire Essentials comes to $468. Willo Lite, for one role open all year, £588. Hireflix Small, $900. Spark Hire, $2,988 if you have 50 employees or fewer. TestGorilla Plus, the plan with video, $6,240. With HireVue you can't run this math without a demo. One row per tool: what it covers on the left, entry price and how to move on the right.

Leave HireVue in six steps

Order matters. The risk isn't losing a tool. It's losing interviews for a role that's still open, or keeping candidate data longer than you meant to. Each step protects one or the other.

01

List everything still running on HireVue

First

Write down open roles, interviews awaiting answers, your question templates, recruiter seats and any ATS connection. Note the retention period too: the customer sets it, not HireVue.

That list tells you what to export and when you can switch off.

Payoff
no forgotten role
02

Read the contract clause on data return

Before the end date

When the subscription ends, data is deleted under your contract. Find the clause on return and deletion: timing, format, what's included. If videos aren't covered, raise it with your HireVue account contact weeks before renewal.

Ask for
video and assessment export
03

Export what you need to keep

Next

Reports download from the tool. For videos and assessments, no export process is publicly documented, so negotiate it with your HireVue account contact. Keep only what serves a live hiring process. The rest doesn't need to follow you.

Keep
roles still open
04

Rebuild your questions and candidate welcome

Then

Copy your questions into the new tool and record a short welcome video. Say clearly which question is practice, a common source of confusion for candidates. State the answer time and what you'll do with the recording.

Less confusion means fewer candidates quitting halfway.

Spell out
practice, timing, use
05

Run one role in parallel

To judge

Keep HireVue on current roles and launch the new tool on a fresh one. Hireflix gives you a month, Hirevire 7 days. Compare candidate response rates and how long your recruiters spend reviewing videos.

That's our advice, not a requirement: it's the only way to judge a tool on your own candidates.

Measure
response rate
06

Set retention, then close HireVue

Last

In the new tool, set the retention period before your first candidate. At HireVue, request deletion of remaining data, per candidate or in bulk, and keep a record of the request. Candidate rights requests (access, deletion) go to you, the employer: their data is handled under the data processing terms you signed with HireVue.

proof of deletion

Migration pitfalls

What makes a HireVue exit go wrong

These mistakes come up again and again in recruiter and candidate feedback. None is hard to avoid, but each one costs lost candidates, a double bill, or data kept for no reason.

Raising data on the last day

Once the subscription ends, data goes under the contract. Negotiate the export before, not after.

Comparing monthly to yearly prices

Hireflix only prices yearly billing (advertised as 50% cheaper than monthly), Spark Hire goes from $249 to $299 monthly, Hirevire from $39 to $49. Compare like for like.

Paying for roles that stopped hiring

At Willo, every active role is billed monthly. Close a role once it's filled, or the bill keeps coming.

Leaving retention on default

Hirevire keeps videos 90 days, Willo Enterprise 12 months or more. Pick your period and set it on purpose.

Swapping one AI for another without noticing

AI features exist elsewhere too: Willo Intelligence from the Lite plan, TestGorilla's AI interviews, including a limited amount on its free plan. If you're leaving to avoid automated scoring, check what you enable.

Forgetting the candidate

A welcome message, a clearly labeled practice question and a stated deadline: that's what keeps candidates from walking away from the camera.

FAQ · 8 questions

HireVue alternatives: frequently asked questions

  • How much does HireVue cost?

HireVue doesn't publish pricing: you request a demo, and the price depends on your headcount and interview volume. Figures floating around online come from third parties, not HireVue. For comparison, the tools on this page list prices from $39 a month at Hirevire to $249 a month at Spark Hire.

  • Is there a free alternative to HireVue?

Not really. TestGorilla has a free plan (10 credits a month) with limited video questions; custom video questions need Plus. To try before paying, Hireflix gives you a month and Hirevire 7 days with no credit card.

  • Does HireVue use AI to score candidates?

HireVue offers assessments that analyze candidate answers, language included. If your team turns them on and you hire in the EU, the AI Act's rules on high-risk recruitment AI may apply to you. Hireflix and Hirevire offer one-way video that your recruiters judge themselves; Willo adds AI features (summaries, insights) you can switch on or not.

  • Does HireVue still analyze candidates' faces?

No. HireVue announced in 2021 that it had dropped facial analysis, saying it no longer added enough to its assessments. Language analysis stayed.

  • Who handles a candidate's data request after HireVue?

You, the employer. HireVue's privacy policy doesn't cover its customers' candidates: their data is handled under the data processing terms HireVue signs with the employer, and HireVue sends access or deletion requests back to the hiring company. Decide who on your team handles them, at HireVue and at your new tool. In the UK, that's under UK GDPR.

  • Can you get your videos back when leaving HireVue?

Not in one click. Reports download, but no video export is publicly documented. Ask for the contract clause on data return, and negotiate exporting videos and assessments before the subscription ends.

  • One-way or live video interviews: which should you pick?

One-way saves time on a first screen at volume: candidates answer when they like, your team watches when it can. Live keeps the conversation, which candidates prefer, but needs a time slot. Spark Hire does both without limits (public pricing up to 50 employees). To leave HackerRank as well, see our HackerRank switch guide.

  • What's the best HireVue alternative for a recruitment agency?

Hirevire Agency (20 roles, 15 users, $199 a month billed yearly), or Willo if your mandates come in waves. For the rest of your tooling, our ranking of recruitment agency software compares the ATS options.
