Spendesk alternatives: where to go, what it costs, how to leave cleanly
Three destinations with public pricing, one pick per reason for leaving, and an exit plan based on Spendesk's own customer terms.
Short answer: Pleo if you want a per-user price on the website instead of a quote, Payhawk if you run more than one company, Airwallex if most of your spend is in foreign currency. Before you sign anything, note two numbers from Spendesk's terms: two months' notice, and a 30-day window after the end to export your data. We checked every price on this page against the vendor's own pricing page in 2026.
Our ranking is editorial: a sponsored spot is always labeled on its card, and no affiliate link ever changes a score.
Why teams leave Spendesk, and what keeps them
Spendesk does plenty right: no active user fees, free physical cards with no monthly charge, approval flows, open API, and cashback from 1% for eligible customers. Happy users call it very user friendly. The people who leave tend to give one of six reasons, which we cross-checked against the pricing page, the customer terms and public reviews.
You can't see the price
Spendesk publishes no figures. You get a fixed monthly subscription plus variable fees tied to how many transactions you run (card payments, invoices, reimbursements), and optional modules on top. Without a competing quote in hand, there's no way to tell whether your bill is fair.
Support that goes quiet
On Trustpilot, Spendesk sits at 3.8 out of 5 from 228 reviews, with 17% at one star, and replies to roughly a quarter of the negative ones. Recent one-star reviews say "Support is beyond pathetic" and describe waits of several weeks. One customer wrote that they wanted to move away but felt "stuck and unassisted".
"Very expensive for what it is"
That line comes from a recent one-star review, and cost comes up again in G2 and Capterra feedback. For a small team that mainly needs cards and receipts, a modular quote built for finance departments can feel heavy.
Settings that won't bend
G2 reviewers mention approval levels that are hard to change and virtual cards that expire at the wrong moment. Capterra users flag a tricky accounting setup and card payment limits. A three-star reviewer calls the site "sometimes glitchy".
It isn't your bank
Spendesk runs cards and spend on top of your business account. You still keep a bank on the side, with its own app and its own fees. If you want one place for currency accounts and cards, Airwallex is built for that.
The exit needs planning
The terms set a two-month notice period. If your pricing terms fix a duration, leaving early means paying every remaining monthly instalment. After the end, you get at least 30 days to download your data, then access is switched off.
You're leaving because… go to…

Spendesk alternatives, tool by tool
For each tool: why move there, who it suits, the catch, how to get there from Spendesk, and what it costs. Scores match our other spend management pages. Prices come from each vendor's pricing page in 2026.
The tools
Pleo: a price you can read before the sales call
Public pricingWhy move to Pleo. It's the mirror image of a Spendesk quote: three plans, listed in pounds. Start is £8 per user per month, Build £14, Optimise £18. You can work out next year's bill on a napkin.
Who it suits. Teams of a handful to a few dozen people who want cards and expenses without a setup project.
Who it doesn't suit. A large team where half the cardholders barely spend: per-head pricing adds up. Start also has one admin, no direct reimbursement and no approvals.
The catch. Build and Optimise are billed yearly with a three-user minimum. Card FX runs at 2%, 1.75% or 1.49% depending on the plan, and direct reimbursements cost 0.90%.
How to switch from Spendesk. If your team relied on Spendesk approvals, start on Build. Replay a month of exported spend to map categories and VAT codes, then move each card-paid subscription one at a time. Our guide to switching from Pleo covers the way back out.

Payhawk: for groups with more than one company
Multi-entityWhy move to Payhawk. It's the closest match to Spendesk on scope: cards, expenses and supplier invoices, with a multi-entity add-on for groups. The difference is the way in: a Growth programme with a published price.
Who it suits. Companies under 20 employees that want a known starting price, and groups that already run several entities.
Who it doesn't suit. Anyone leaving Spendesk to escape quotes for good: past Growth, Payhawk is quote-based too, on annual or multi-year contracts.
The catch. Growth is £149 a month on a 24-month term, for one entity, 10 cards, 10 seats, 15 invoices and 15 reimbursements a month. A 7-day trial is available to eligible companies.
How to switch from Spendesk. Set up one entity during the trial, load a month of Spendesk journal exports, and check your cost centres hold up before adding anything else.

Airwallex: when your spend crosses currencies
FXWhy move to Airwallex. If your biggest pain is paying US or EU suppliers, the real issue is currency, not approvals. Airwallex gives you multi-currency accounts, cards and international payments in one place.
Who it suits. E-commerce brands, agencies and startups that pay or get paid in several currencies every month.
Who it doesn't suit. A finance team that wants detailed approval chains and purchasing modules: spend control is lighter than at Spendesk.
The catch. Explore costs £0 or £19 a month (waived once you deposit or hold £10k), Grow £49 a month, and Accelerate is on quote, all excluding VAT. There's a one-month free trial, so you can run a month of supplier payments before committing.
How to switch from Spendesk. Open the account in your largest supplier's currency, move those payments first, then the card subscriptions. You can keep a separate expenses tool alongside.

Spendesk and its 3 alternatives side by side
Our default pick: Pleo for a team that wants a readable bill, Payhawk for a growing group. For scale, ten cardholders on Pleo Build cost £1,680 a year before fees. If your Spendesk quote is far above that for the same use, you have something to negotiate with.

Leave Spendesk in seven steps
The deadlines come from Spendesk's customer terms: two months' notice, at least 30 days to retrieve your data. Plan everything else around those two dates.
The steps
Check your pricing terms for a fixed term
FirstBy default the contract runs with no end date. If your pricing terms set a duration, it renews automatically, and leaving early costs every remaining monthly instalment.
Spendesk doesn't issue individually signed contracts by default, so the accepted terms are what count. Ask support in writing if anything is unclear.
- Find
- term length and end date
- If you rush it
- remaining instalments due
Give notice two months ahead
Key dateYou can terminate at any time with two months' notice. On a fixed term, refusing renewal takes written notice one month before the end. Send it in writing and keep proof.
Give yourself room for a pilot: send it at least two months before the date you want to stop paying.
- Notice
- 2 months
- If you rush it
- two extra months billed
Choose by your accounting software
Spendesk connects to Xero, QuickBooks and Datev. Ask whoever keeps your books which one they use and what format they want, then check the destination has a native connection, not just a CSV.
This is the filter that rules tools out fastest.
- If you rush it
- monthly re-keying
Export journals and receipts before the end
ArchiveIn Bookkeep, export by period: purchase and bank journals come out as CSV, receipts in their original format (PDF, PNG, JPEG). The API offers the same exports, with endpoints flagged as experimental.
You get at least 30 days after the contract ends, then access is disabled. Do it during the notice period.
- Window
- 30 days after the end
- If you rush it
- lost receipts
List every subscription paid by card
Spendesk's recurring and virtual cards pay for your software and ads. Write down each supplier, amount, billing date and card.
Anything you miss will fail the day the card goes off, and some services cut access on the first decline.
- If you rush it
- a service goes dark
Run a pilot alongside
Give the new tool to three or four heavy spenders and run a couple of month-end closes in parallel. You'll catch category, VAT and receipt-reading issues on real spend.
Have your accountant sign off on receipt formats before rolling out.
- Time
- two to three months
Move subscriptions and cards, then switch off
CriticalCreate one virtual card per supplier and update each payment method, ticking off your list. Then hand out team cards with matching limits.
Leave Spendesk cards live for a few days: anything still charging there is a subscription you missed. Turn them off before the notice period ends.
- If you rush it
- double charges or declines

What makes a Spendesk exit go wrong
None of these are technical. They're missed dates, forgotten exports and quotes compared blind.
Finding out about the notice too late
Two months is a long time once you've signed elsewhere. Note the deadline the day you start comparing.
Missing the fixed term
If your pricing terms set an end date, leaving early means paying out the rest. Sometimes waiting is cheaper than switching now.
Letting the export window close
Thirty days after the end, access goes. Export during the notice period and open the files to check them.
Comparing a quote with a licence
Add up licences, FX and reimbursement fees over twelve real months for every option. Our expense management ranking lists the price grids.
Forgetting the bank side
Spendesk sits on top of your account. If you also want a new business account, see our best business bank ranking before choosing.
