Overview

What the DataForSEO Zapier integration actually does

It lets a Zap ask DataForSEO a question and carry the answer to the next step. DataForSEO is an SEO and marketing data provider. On Zapier it only exposes lookups: nothing in DataForSEO starts a Zap, and nothing gets written back into it. Another app always opens the run.

Three results show up again and again once it is wired. A prospect snapshot: a new deal lands in your CRM, Get Domain Rank Overview and Get Ranked Keywords fetch how the prospect's site performs, and your sales rep reads it before the first call. A keyword brief: a writer drops a topic in a form, Get Keyword Suggestions and Get Google Search Volume return related terms with their volume, CPC and competition. An AI visibility check: Get Live LLM Mentions or Get Live ChatGPT LLM Responses show whether your brand comes up in AI answers.

What Zapier does not do here matters just as much. There is no trigger, so DataForSEO cannot tell a Zap that a ranking moved. There is no action either, so you cannot create a task or a project inside DataForSEO. And because every lookup is a search step, any Zap that uses DataForSEO needs a paid Zapier plan, even though DataForSEO itself is not a premium app.

If you would rather build this on another platform, the DataForSEO Make integration covers the same app, and n8n vs Zapier sets the two tools side by side.

Vocabulary

Zapier vocabulary in one minute

Eight words come back on every line of this page. Here is each one in plain English.

Zap
The automation you build on Zapier: one trigger, then one or more steps that run each time that trigger event happens.
Trigger
The event in an app that starts the Zap. Once the Zap is switched on, Zapier waits for it. DataForSEO has none.
Action
The step that does the work once the Zap has started: it writes, sends or moves something for you in an app.
Task
What Zapier bills: one action your Zap completes successfully. The number on your plan is a count of those.
Polling vs instant
A polling trigger is checked by Zapier on a timer. An instant trigger is pushed by the app the moment the event happens.
Filter
A step that lets the Zap continue only when the data that arrived meets your condition, and stops it otherwise.
Search step
A step that looks up something that already exists, here in DataForSEO, so later steps can use what it found.
Multi-step Zap
Any Zap beyond one trigger and one action. A second action, a filter or a search makes one, and it needs a paid plan.
Cost

What a DataForSEO Zap really costs you

DataForSEO is not a premium app, so it is not locked by itself. The catch sits elsewhere: all 25 operations are searches, and a search turns any Zap into a multi-step Zap.

  • DataForSEO premium? No, available from the free plan
  • Free plan100 tasks a month, unlimited Zaps, two steps per Zap
  • A Zap with a searchMulti-step, so a paid plan
  • What is billedEach action that succeeds
  • What is freeThe trigger and the checks for new data

The free plan builds two-step Zaps only, one trigger and one action. Add a DataForSEO search between them and you are past that limit, so plan on a paid tier. On the billing side, the trigger never costs a task, checking for new data costs nothing, and every action that succeeds counts on its own. An action that fails is not counted. How fast the run starts depends on the trigger of the other app: if it is a polling trigger, the interval of your plan applies.

Connect

Connect your DataForSEO account to Zapier

  1. 01

    Open the Apps page

In Zapier, go to Apps and click + Add connection. Here, a connection is your DataForSEO account linked once, then reused by every step that calls it.

  2. 02

    Pick DataForSEO

Type DataForSEO in the search box of the dialog, select it, then click Add connection. You need a working, existing DataForSEO account before this step.

  3. 03

    Sign in and grant access

Sign in to DataForSEO in the tab that opens and allow Zapier to use the account. From then on, every DataForSEO search in your Zaps can pick that connection.

First Zap

Your first Zap: a ranking snapshot for every new deal

GoalEach new deal in your CRM gets the organic picture of the prospect's domain, written to a sheet your team already reads.

  1. 01

    Build: start on the CRM

Click Build, choose your CRM as the trigger app and the new-deal event. DataForSEO cannot start a Zap, so another tool always takes this first slot.

  2. 02

    Test the trigger

Run Test. Zapier brings back the three most recent deals of the connected account, so you map the next steps on a real record rather than on a blank one.

  3. 03

    Add the DataForSEO search

Click the plus icon, pick DataForSEO, then Get Domain Rank Overview under SEARCH. Map the deal's website into Target Domain, typed without http and www.

  4. 04

    Send the result somewhere useful

Add your spreadsheet as the next step and map the ranking and traffic values into a new row. That row is the action your plan bills when it goes through.

  5. 05

    Test, then publish

Test each step and read what came back. When the row looks right, click Publish to switch the Zap on. Only deals created after that moment will run.

Searches

The 25 DataForSEO searches

25 search steps look for data that already exists in DataForSEO, so a later step can use it.

Every DataForSEO operation on Zapier is a search step. In the editor they appear under Action event, at the bottom of the list, below the SEARCH heading. Some action fields also show + Add search step, which inserts one just before the current step and wires its result into the field. DataForSEO offers no find-or-create variant, so none of these searches can create a missing record.

25

Search

In Zapier“Get a list of keywords that any domain or webpage is ranking for.”

Lists the keywords a domain or a page currently ranks for. Target, Location and Language are required, with the domain written without http or www.

When to use it
seeing what a competitor already wins in search, ahead of your next planning meeting.

The three settings every search exposes

  1. Successful if no search results are found?
Left on its default, a search that comes back empty stops the Zap and the steps that needed it are skipped. Switch it on to let the Zap carry on without data.
  2. Create X if it doesn't exist yet?
This box turns a search into a find-or-create on apps that support it. DataForSEO has no such variant, so you will not use it here.
  3. If multiple search results are found?
Three exits when several items match: keep the first one (the default), stop the Zap, or pass all of them on at once.
When it breaks

When a DataForSEO Zap breaks

Zapier attaches no help article to DataForSEO, so the cases below come from how Zapier and the fields of the searches behave.

Formatting and the order of events cause the usual surprises. Read these before you publish, and keep Zapier troubleshooting at hand for the rest.

  • Nothing from before the Zap

A Zap only reacts to what happens after it is switched on. Deals, rows or form entries that already existed are not run through DataForSEO; that backlog is a separate job.
  • An empty search stops the run

When a lookup finds nothing, the default setting stops the Zap and skips the steps that depended on it. Turn on Successful if no search results are found? if the next step can cope.
  • A Zap that feeds itself

If the results are written into the very sheet or list that starts the Zap, every new row starts it again, and the task count drains fast.
  • Wrong format for a domain

Most domain fields expect the name without http and www. Check that a website captured by a form is mapped without them, rather than as a full URL.
  • Page audit timing out

Get Page Audit gives up on pages that do not load within 120 seconds, unless you enable the option that returns data despite the timeout error.
  • Bulk imports held back

Import hundreds of records into the trigger app at once and Zapier's flood protection can hold the batch. Polling triggers still never run the same item twice.

FAQ

DataForSEO Zapier integration: frequently asked questions

01Is the DataForSEO Zapier integration free?
DataForSEO is not a premium app on Zapier, so it is not reserved for paid plans. In practice you will still need one. Every DataForSEO operation is a search step, and a Zap that contains a search is a multi-step Zap. The free plan only builds Zaps of one trigger and one action, so a working DataForSEO Zap goes beyond it. The free plan remains useful to explore the connection, but plan on Professional or above for anything that runs.
02How many tasks does a DataForSEO Zap use?
Zapier bills tasks, and a task is one action that completes successfully. The trigger of the other app never costs a task, and neither do the checks Zapier runs to find new data. Each action that succeeds after your DataForSEO search counts separately, so a Zap writing to a sheet and then posting a message uses two per run. Actions that fail are not counted. A few apps and actions use more than one task when they complete.
03Does DataForSEO work in real time with Zapier?
DataForSEO has no trigger, so its timing depends entirely on the app that starts the Zap. If that app offers an instant trigger, the run starts as soon as the event happens, whatever your plan. If it is a polling trigger, Zapier checks on a timer: every 15 minutes on Free, every 2 on Professional, every minute on Team and Enterprise. The DataForSEO search then runs as the next step of that same run.
04What does it take to connect DataForSEO to Zapier?
An existing DataForSEO account, plus access to anything you do not own and want the Zap to touch. The connection itself takes three moves: open Apps in Zapier and click + Add connection, search for DataForSEO and confirm with Add connection, then sign in to DataForSEO in the new tab and grant access. After that, every DataForSEO step in any of your Zaps can reuse the same connection. Nothing has to be typed again.
05Why does a DataForSEO search return nothing?
Check the format of the values first. Location and Language must be full names, such as United Kingdom and English, taken from the lists in the DataForSEO documentation. Domains go in without http and www, while page-level targets need an absolute URL. Keyword fields have limits too, such as 700 symbols on Get Parsed SERP. When a lookup comes back empty, the default setting stops the Zap, which is why later steps seem to vanish.
06What if the DataForSEO operation you need is missing?
Zapier offers 25 DataForSEO searches and nothing else, so anything outside that list is not available through this integration: there is no way to create, update or delete data in DataForSEO from a Zap. Check first whether another search returns the figure under a different name, since several overlap. If none fits, another automation platform with its own DataForSEO connector may cover it, which is worth comparing before you build.
07Zapier, Make or n8n for DataForSEO?
It depends on your criteria rather than on a winner. Zapier suits a team that wants a guided editor and is fine with a paid plan, which DataForSEO searches require anyway. Make and n8n have their own DataForSEO pages to weigh against this one. Compare the operations each platform exposes for DataForSEO, the way each one bills a run, and who on your side will maintain the workflow. On Zapier, all 25 DataForSEO operations are searches, with no trigger and no action.
