Overview

What the Infobip Zapier integration is for

Infobip is a messaging platform: one account to reach customers over SMS, Viber, WhatsApp and voice. Plugged into Zapier, it reports incoming SMS and Viber messages so a Zap can react, and it lets any Zap send a message or call a number on your behalf.

Three things teams usually want from it. An urgent inbound text becomes a spoken alert: New SMS Message starts the Zap and Call Phone rings the person on call, reading out the text you set. A booking made in another tool sends its confirmation through Send SMS Message. And a customer you already talk to on WhatsApp gets a template through Send WhatsApp Message.

What it does not do matters as much. There is no trigger for inbound WhatsApp messages and none for delivery reports, only SMS and Viber arrivals. WhatsApp sending only works with a template, so free-form replies are out. And there is no search step at all: a Zap cannot look up a past message or a contact in Infobip before acting.

The good news is speed. Both triggers are instant, so the plan you are on does not slow them down. If you want to weigh other tools, the Infobip Make integration covers the same app on Make, and the n8n vs Zapier comparison helps frame the choice.

Vocabulary

Zapier vocabulary, the short version

Seven terms, defined once here and reused as is further down.

Zap
An automation on Zapier: one trigger, then one or more actions that run every time the trigger event happens.
Trigger
The event that starts a Zap, here a new SMS or Viber message reaching Infobip. Once the Zap is on, Zapier waits for it.
Action
The step that does the work after the start: sending a message, a WhatsApp template or placing a voice call.
Task
What Zapier bills: one action that completes successfully. The allowance on your plan is counted in tasks.
Instant trigger
A trigger the app reports itself, calling Zapier the moment the event happens. Both Infobip triggers work this way.
Polling trigger
A trigger Zapier checks on a timer, asking the app for new items. Common on other apps, absent from Infobip.
Filter
A step that lets the Zap go on only when what arrived meets your condition, and stops it there otherwise.
Cost

What an Infobip Zap costs on Zapier

Infobip is not a premium app, so it runs on the free Zapier plan.

  • Free plan100 tasks a month, unlimited Zaps
  • Inbound messageNo task
  • Premium appNo
  • TriggersBoth instant

Receiving a message costs no task: the trigger is never billed. Each action that succeeds counts once, so a Zap that sends an SMS and then places a call uses two tasks per run, and a send that fails is not counted. The free plan gives you 100 tasks a month but only two-step Zaps, one trigger and one action. A filter turns the Zap into a multi-step Zap, which needs a paid plan. The interval grid below concerns polling triggers only; Infobip's two are instant.

Connect

Connect Infobip to Zapier

  1. 01

    Start from Apps

Open Apps in your Zapier account and click + Add connection. That connection is your Infobip account, linked once and reused by every Infobip step you build later.

  2. 02

    Find Infobip

Search for Infobip in the dialog, select it and click Add connection. The Infobip account comes first, with the senders and numbers your Zaps will send from.

  3. 03

    Sign in and approve

Log in to Infobip in the new tab and grant Zapier access. If the senders or numbers you plan to use belong to a teammate, check your own access to them first.

First Zap

Your first Infobip Zap

GoalWhen an inbound SMS meets your condition, Infobip calls the person on duty and reads out a message you wrote.

  1. 01

    Build: pick the trigger

Create a Zap, choose Infobip as the app and New SMS Message as the event, then select the Infobip connection you added before.

  2. 02

    Test it

Run the test so Zapier brings back the three most recent SMS of the account. Mapping fields on a real message is far safer than guessing.

  3. 03

    Add a filter

From the plus icon, add Filter, then set the field, the rule and the value. A text rule on a text field; a mismatched type is why a filter never passes.

  4. 04

    Add Call Phone

Add Infobip again with Call Phone. Type the on-call number in To and the sentence to read out in Text. Both fields are required.

  5. 05

    Test, then Publish

Test each step and check that the phone actually rang. Then click Publish. The filter makes this a multi-step Zap, so it needs a paid plan.

Triggers

Infobip triggers

2 events start a Zap when something happens in Infobip, and 2 of them are instant: the app calls Zapier straight away, whatever your plan.

1

New SMS Message

Instant trigger

In Zapier“Triggers when a new SMS message is received.”

Starts your Zap whenever an SMS reaches your Infobip account, which turns any customer text into the opening move of an automation. The message and what comes with it are handed to the next steps.

How it fires
the app tells Zapier the moment it happens, so the Zap starts right away, whatever your plan
When to use it
a property manager wants tenant texts about a leak routed to the on-call plumber by phone.
Watch out
a Zap that answers with Send SMS Message to the number it listens on can set itself off again.
2

New Viber Message

Instant trigger

In Zapier“Triggers when a new Viber message is received.”

Kicks off a Zap each time a Viber message is received by Infobip. It is the Viber twin of the SMS trigger, useful when part of your audience writes on Viber rather than by text.

How it fires
the app tells Zapier the moment it happens, so the Zap starts right away, whatever your plan
When to use it
an online shop with Viber support wants each incoming question copied to its helpdesk tool.
Watch out
only messages received after you publish the Zap start it; older conversations are never picked up.
Actions

Infobip actions, grouped by channel

Infobip gives you 4 actions. For each one: what it does for you, when to reach for it, and what to watch out for.

1

Send SMS Message

Action

In Zapier“Send SMS message.”

Sends a text from Infobip to one or several numbers. You set the sender, the destination and the message, all three required.

When to use it
confirming an appointment the moment it is booked in your scheduling tool.
Watch out
the sender must follow the format Infobip expects, or the step fails.
2

Send Viber Message

Action

In Zapier“Send Viber message.”

Delivers a Viber message through Infobip, with a Viber sender, a destination and the text. An optional switch marks the content as promotional.

When to use it
order updates for customers who prefer Viber to SMS.
Watch out
the switch only says whether the content is promotional, so set it per Zap, not once for all.
3

Call Phone

Action

In Zapier“Call a number and read a message.”

Places a call and reads your text aloud, converted to speech. Only the destination and the text are required.

When to use it
an alert that must not sit unread, such as a critical order or an urgent support message.
Watch out
To and Text are both required, so map a number every run actually carries, or the call never goes out.
4

Send WhatsApp Message

Action

In Zapier“Send WhatsApp message.”

Pushes a WhatsApp message built from a template, sent from your WhatsApp number to the recipient you map.

When to use it
a delivery notice or a payment reminder you have already set up as a template.
Watch out
choose the sender first; the template list only fills in after that.
When it breaks

When an Infobip Zap breaks

Zapier attaches no help article to Infobip, so these cases come from the way Zapier behaves with every app.

No Infobip-specific limit is on record. What can go wrong is what Zapier applies everywhere: what happened before the Zap existed, loops, and sudden volume. Go through these four cases before you publish, and keep the Zapier troubleshooting page close for the day a run fails.

  • Past messages are ignored

A Zap only reacts to messages received after it is switched on. Older SMS and Viber conversations are not replayed; dealing with them is a separate job.
  • Answering your own number

A Zap that sends an SMS to the number its trigger listens on receives that SMS, then sends again. The loop eats your task allowance quickly.
  • A burst of inbound messages

If a campaign brings a sudden wave of replies, Zapier's flood protection can hold the runs back instead of firing them all at once.
  • A required field left empty

Every send needs its From, To and Text or template. If a mapped value arrives empty from an earlier step, the action fails and nothing is sent.

FAQ

Infobip Zapier integration: questions people ask

01Is the Infobip Zapier integration free?
On the Zapier side, yes: Infobip is not a premium app, so it runs on the free plan. That plan includes 100 tasks a month and unlimited Zaps, each limited to two steps, one trigger and one action. Adding a filter or a second action makes the Zap multi-step, which requires a paid plan. For a first test, one trigger and one send are enough to see the whole chain work.
02How many tasks does an Infobip Zap use?
One task per successful action, nothing for the trigger. An inbound SMS or Viber message that starts your Zap is free; the SMS, Viber, WhatsApp message or call your Zap then sends counts as one task if it goes through. A Zap that sends a WhatsApp message and places a call uses two. A failed send is not counted. Watch for loops, since a Zap that keeps restarting itself spends a task on every pass.
03Does Infobip trigger Zaps in real time?
Yes. New SMS Message and New Viber Message are both instant triggers: Infobip tells Zapier as soon as a message arrives, and the Zap starts straight away. The polling interval of your plan does not apply to them, which makes this one of the rare cases where the free plan reacts as fast as Enterprise. In the editor, a Zap built on an instant trigger shows a lightning bolt, so you can check it at a glance before you publish.
04What does connecting Infobip to Zapier require?
An Infobip account, and access to the senders and numbers your Zaps will use. You add the connection once from Apps with + Add connection, sign in to Infobip in the tab that opens and grant access. Every Infobip step then reuses it. Before building, check that you have a sender ready for each channel: SMS, Viber and WhatsApp sends all require a From value, and WhatsApp also requires a template.
05Why can't an Infobip Zap send a free-text WhatsApp message?
Because Send WhatsApp Message requires a template. The step asks for a sender, a recipient and a template, and the template list only fills in once a sender is chosen. That means a Zap can only send WhatsApp content that already exists as a template in your Infobip account. For free text, SMS or Viber are the options this integration gives you on Zapier. Check the template wording in Infobip before you build, since the Zap cannot change it.
06What if an Infobip operation is missing?
Then this integration cannot do it today. Zapier lists two triggers and four actions for Infobip, and nothing else appears in the editor. There is no trigger for inbound WhatsApp messages, for example, and no search step to look up a message or a contact. Sometimes a different channel covers the need. If not, ask Infobip whether they plan to add the operation, or check whether another platform exposes it.
07Zapier, Make or n8n for Infobip?
Decide by criterion, not by ranking. On Zapier, Infobip works from the free plan, both triggers are instant, and every successful send counts as a task. Start by listing the Infobip events and steps your flow needs, then check which platform exposes them, inbound WhatsApp included. Then compare what one run of your flow costs on each, and whether instant triggers matter for your use case. The answer usually comes out of those checks rather than from a general opinion.
