Mention Zapier integrationAutomate Mention with Zapier.

The Mention Zapier integration offers 3 triggers and 1 action. New mentions, new alerts and new sources can start a Zap, and Create Alert sets up monitoring from another app. Every trigger is checked on a timer, and the free plan is enough to start.

Overview

What the Mention Zapier integration actually does

Mention watches the keywords you choose and sorts what it finds into filtered, prioritized results. Zapier carries those results to your other apps: a Zap (the automation you build on Zapier) starts when a new mention, alert or source shows up in Mention, and it can also create a new alert in Mention from something that happened elsewhere.

Mentions your team actually reads. New Mention picks up what one of your alerts has found and hands it to your team chat, so nobody has to keep the Mention dashboard open.

Monitoring that starts with the project. Create Alert opens a new alert under your Mention account, named from data in another app without anyone opening Mention, for example each new product name added to a list.

A record of every alert. New Alert fires when an alert is added to the account, which is how you keep a shared log of what is being watched.

What Zapier does not do here. Mention describes its own monitoring as real time, but the three triggers on Zapier are polling ones: Zapier checks Mention on a timer, every 15 minutes on the free plan. There is no search and no way to edit or delete an alert from a Zap. And mentions found before the Zap was switched on are never picked up. For the bigger picture, see our Zapier review.

Vocabulary

Zapier vocabulary in one minute

Seven words keep coming back on this page. Here they are once, in plain English.

Zap
The automation you build on Zapier: one trigger, then one or more actions that run each time the trigger event happens.
Trigger
The event in an app that starts the Zap. Once the Zap is on, Zapier waits for it, for example a new mention in Mention.
Action
What the Zap does once it has started: the step that writes, sends or creates something for you, like a Mention alert.
Task
The unit Zapier bills: one action your Zap completes successfully. The number on your plan is a count of those.
Polling vs instant
A polling trigger is checked on a timer; an instant one is reported by the app the moment it happens. All three Mention triggers poll.
Filter
A step that lets the Zap carry on only when what arrived meets the condition you set, and stops it there otherwise.
Multi-step Zap
Any Zap beyond one trigger and one action. A second action or a filter makes it one, and it then needs a paid plan.
Cost

What a Mention Zap really costs

Mention is not a premium app, so it runs on Zapier's free plan. You pay in tasks, and only actions that succeed are counted.

  • Free plan100 tasks a month, unlimited Zaps, two steps each
  • Trigger checksNever billed
  • Failed actionNot counted
  • Premium appNo, works on the free plan

The trigger never costs a task, however often Zapier checks Mention for new mentions. Each action that goes through counts once, and one that fails is not billed. A Zap that posts every mention to chat costs one task per mention, so an alert that finds a lot adds up quickly. Adding a filter to keep only some mentions makes the Zap multi-step, which the free plan does not run, even if it ends up using fewer tasks.

Connect

Connect Mention to Zapier in three steps

  1. 01

    Open your connections

In your Zapier account, go to the Apps page and click + Add connection. You need a Mention account, plus read or write access on anything you do not own yourself and want the Zap to touch.

  2. 02

    Pick Mention

Type Mention in the search box of the dialog, select it from the results, then click Add connection. A new tab opens on the Mention side for the sign-in.

  3. 03

    Sign in and allow access

Log in to Mention in that tab and grant Zapier access to the account. The connection is saved once and reused by every Zap step that reads from or writes to Mention.

First Zap

Your first Zap: send the mentions that matter to your team chat

GoalWhen one of your Mention alerts finds a new mention that meets your condition, post it in a team chat channel.

  1. 01

    Create the Zap

Start a new Zap in the editor and give it a name. With its filter it has three steps, so it is a multi-step Zap and needs a paid plan or the free trial.

  2. 02

    Set the trigger

Pick Mention and New Mention, then choose the account and the alert to watch. Test it: Zapier brings back the three most recent mentions, so you work on real ones.

  3. 03

    Set the filter

Add a Filter from the plus icon and fill its three boxes: the field to look at, the rule, and the value. Use a rule of the right type, text or number, or it never passes.

  4. 04

    Add the chat message

Pick your team chat and its channel-message action. Map the mention details you saw on the trigger test into the message, without assuming a field exists.

  5. 05

    Test, then publish

Run the action test and read the message that lands in the channel. When it looks right, click Publish to switch the Zap on.

Triggers

The 3 Mention triggers

3 events start a Zap when something happens in Mention. Zapier checks for them at the interval your plan allows.

1

New Alert

Polling trigger

In Zapier“Triggers when a new alert is added.”

Starts your Zap each time an alert is added to a Mention account. An alert is the keyword watch itself, so this trigger tells you when someone sets up a new one.

How it fires
Zapier goes and looks at regular intervals, and how often depends on your plan: every 15 minutes on the free one
When to use it
several people create alerts and you want a shared list of what is being watched, kept up to date in a spreadsheet.
Watch out
you must pick the account to pull alerts from; check on the test that it is the account you mean.
2

New Mention

Polling trigger

In Zapier“Triggers when a new mention comes through for the specified alert.”

Fires when a new mention comes in for the alert you choose. It is the trigger that carries what your monitoring actually found.

How it fires
Zapier goes and looks at regular intervals, and how often depends on your plan: every 15 minutes on the free one
When to use it
a mention of your product should reach the people who answer customers, in the tool they already use.
Watch out
one Zap watches one alert, since Account Id and Alert are both required; to follow two alerts, build two Zaps.
3

New Source

Polling trigger

In Zapier“A listing of mention sources available”

Works from the list of mention sources available in Mention. The official description stays that short, so run the trigger test and read what a source looks like in your account before building on it.

How it fires
Zapier goes and looks at regular intervals, and how often depends on your plan: every 15 minutes on the free one
When to use it
the test confirmed that sources are what you want to track, and you want a copy of each new one elsewhere.
Watch out
map only what the three test samples actually show; nothing about a source is guaranteed beyond that.
Actions

The Mention action

Mention gives you 1 action. For each one: what it does for you, when to reach for it, and what to watch out for.

1

Create Alert

Action

In Zapier“Creates a new alert”

Sets up a new alert in Mention, under the account you pick and with the name you give it. Account Id and Alert Name are both required.

When to use it
each new product or campaign recorded in another app should get its own monitoring without anyone opening Mention.
Watch out
the alert is created under the Account Id you map, so check on the action test that it landed in the account you meant.
When it breaks

When a Mention Zap breaks

Zapier attaches no help article to Mention and no Mention-specific limit is documented. What breaks is what breaks on every app.

These four cases cover the general limits to keep in mind. If you are stuck on one, our Zapier troubleshooting guide is the next stop.

  • Older mentions never arrive

A Zap only reacts to what happens after you switch it on. Mentions your alerts found before that are not picked up; moving them is a separate job.
  • A Zap that restarts itself

A Zap that writes into the very place its own trigger watches can set itself off again and again, and burn through your tasks fast.
  • A big batch held back

When a trigger suddenly returns a huge batch, after a bulk import for example, Zapier's flood protection can hold it back instead of running every item.
  • No duplicates from polling

Zapier remembers what it has already seen on a polling trigger, so the same mention does not start the Zap twice, even across several checks.

FAQ

Mention Zapier integration: your questions

01Is the Mention Zapier integration free?
Yes. Mention is not a premium app, so it works on Zapier's free plan, which gives you 100 tasks a month and unlimited Zaps. The limit is the number of steps: two per Zap, one trigger and one action. Posting every new mention to a chat channel fits within that. Keeping only some mentions with a filter, or adding a second action, makes the Zap multi-step, and that needs a paid plan or the free trial.
02How many tasks does a Mention Zap use?
One per successful action, each time the Zap runs. The trigger costs nothing, and neither do Zapier's checks for new mentions, however often they happen. A Zap that posts each mention to chat uses one task per mention, so an alert that finds a lot of mentions uses a lot of tasks. A Zap with two actions per mention uses two. An action that fails is not counted against your plan.
03Are Mention triggers real time on Zapier?
No. Mention monitors keywords on its own side, but all three of its Zapier triggers are polling triggers: Zapier asks Mention for new items at a fixed interval and keeps only what it has not seen. The interval depends on your plan: every 15 minutes on Free, every 2 minutes on Professional, every minute on Team and Enterprise. On paid plans you can also change the interval or run a check by hand from the editor.
04What does it take to connect Mention to Zapier?
A Mention account, plus read or write access on anything you do not own yourself and want the Zap to touch. On Zapier, open the Apps page, click + Add connection, search Mention, click Add connection, then sign in to Mention in the tab that opens and grant access. For New Mention, the account also needs at least one alert, since the trigger asks you to pick the alert it watches.
05Can one Zap follow several Mention alerts?
Not with a single New Mention trigger. The trigger requires an Account Id and one Alert, so each Zap watches exactly one alert. To follow three alerts, build three Zaps, each with its own alert selected, and point them at the same chat channel or spreadsheet if you want everything in one place. Each Zap counts its own tasks, so the total is the sum of the mentions found by all the alerts.
06What if the Mention operation you want is not there?
Then Zapier does not offer it for Mention today. Mention's app page on Zapier shows the current list of triggers and actions, so check there first. With 3 triggers and 1 action, the integration covers reading mentions, alerts and sources and creating alerts. There is no search and nothing to edit or delete an alert, so those steps stay in Mention itself, and the Zap handles the parts around them.
07Zapier, Make or n8n for Mention?
Weigh three criteria rather than a ranking. First, whether the tool offers a ready-made Mention connector: Zapier does, with 3 triggers and 1 action. Second, how often your alerts produce mentions, since Zapier bills one task per successful action and a busy alert multiplies that. Third, how fast the result has to arrive: on Zapier, Mention triggers poll, every 15 minutes on Free. Run your own scenario through those three questions on each tool.
