Ontraport Zapier integrationAutomate Ontraport with Zapier.
The Ontraport Zapier integration gives you 6 triggers (5 instant), 3 actions and 1 search. Forms, purchases, tags and contacts can start a Zap, and Zapier can tag, create or update and look up contacts in return. Here is what each does and what it costs.

What the Ontraport Zapier integration actually does
Ontraport is a business and marketing platform built for coaches, experts and people who sell courses or information products: contacts, forms, tags and payments live in one place. Connected to Zapier, it tells your other tools when someone signs up, buys or gets tagged, and it accepts contacts and tags coming from those tools.
Three outcomes cover most uses. Every sale lands in your books: Product Purchased or Transaction Created With Product starts the Zap for the product you pick, and an accounting or spreadsheet app records it. Contacts from everywhere, in one CRM: a webinar tool, a booking app or a checkout outside Ontraport starts the Zap and Create or Update Contact brings the person in, then Add Tags to Contact sorts them. Tags that drive other tools: Tag Added and Tag Removed react the moment a tag changes, so a community, a course platform or a chat channel can open or close access.
Now what the app page leaves out. Five of the six triggers are instant, but New Contact is a polling trigger and waits for Zapier's next check. Find Contact only searches the fields shown in your current contact view in Ontraport. There is no action to remove a tag or delete a contact; for anything the ready-made actions do not cover, there is an advanced request step meant for technical users.
Before choosing a tool, the Zapier review sets out the general picture, and the Make vs Zapier comparison is there too.
Zapier vocabulary in one minute
Eight words come back throughout this page. Here they are in plain English.
- Zap
- The automation you build on Zapier: one trigger, then one or more actions that run every time the trigger event happens.
- Trigger
- The event in an app that starts the Zap. Once the Zap is on, Zapier waits for it. Ontraport offers six of them.
- Action
- What the Zap does once started: the step that writes, sends or moves something for you, such as tagging a contact.
- Task
- The unit Zapier bills: one action your Zap completes successfully. The count on your plan is a count of those.
- Instant trigger
- A trigger the app reports itself: it calls Zapier the moment the event happens. Five Ontraport triggers work this way.
- Polling trigger
- A trigger Zapier checks on a timer, asking the app for new items at a fixed interval. New Contact is the Ontraport one.
- Filter
- A step that lets the Zap go on only when what arrived meets your condition, and stops it quietly otherwise.
- Search step
- A step that looks up something already in an app, so the steps after it can use what it found. Ontraport has one: Find Contact.
What an Ontraport Zap really costs
Triggers never cost a task, whether Ontraport reports a purchase instantly or Zapier checks for new contacts on a timer. What you pay for is each action that completes: a contact created or updated, tags added, a request sent.
- Any trigger0 task
- Each successful action1 task (a few actions use more)
- Free plan100 tasks a month, 2-step Zaps
- Premium appNo, Ontraport runs on the free plan
A Zap with three actions uses three times more than a Zap with one, and an action that fails is not counted. Ontraport is not a premium app, so the free plan works: 100 tasks a month, unlimited Zaps, two steps per Zap. Adding Find Contact, a filter or a second action makes the Zap multi-step, which needs a paid plan. The interval grid below only concerns New Contact; the five instant triggers fire straight away on every plan.
Connect Ontraport to Zapier in 3 steps
- 01
Open your connections
In your Zapier account, open the Apps page and click + Add connection. A connection is your Ontraport account linked to Zapier once, then reused by every Zap that touches Ontraport.
- 02
Find Ontraport
Type Ontraport in the search box of the dialog, pick it, then click Add connection. You need an existing Ontraport account, so keep the login of the right account at hand.
- 03
Sign in and grant access
Sign in to Ontraport in the tab that opens and grant Zapier access. Use an account that can see the forms, products, tags and contacts your Zaps will work with, including those other users created.
Your first Ontraport Zap
GoalLog every purchase of one product in a spreadsheet, then tag the buyer in Ontraport.
- 01
Pick the trigger
Start a new Zap, choose Ontraport as the app and Product Purchased as the event, select your connection, then choose the product to watch.
- 02
Test on a real purchase
Run the test. Zapier brings back the three most recent purchases of the connected account for that product, so the next steps are mapped on a real one.
- 03
Add the spreadsheet row
Add the spreadsheet app as the first action and map what Ontraport sent into the columns. Test this step once and check the row before going on.
- 04
Tag the buyer
Add Ontraport again with Add Tags to Contact, map the buyer from the trigger into Contact and pick the tags. Two actions make this a multi-step Zap: it needs a paid plan.
- 05
Test, then publish
Test the tagging step, check the contact in Ontraport, then publish the Zap to switch it on. Each purchase now costs two tasks.
The 6 Ontraport triggers
6 events start a Zap when something happens in Ontraport, and 5 of them are instant: the app calls Zapier straight away, whatever your plan.
New Contact
Polling triggerIn Zapier“Triggers when a new contact is added to Ontraport.”
Starts your Zap when a contact is added to Ontraport, whatever brought them in, and passes that contact to the next steps. It is the broadest door into your list, and the only Ontraport trigger that waits for Zapier to come and check.
New Form Submission
Instant triggerIn Zapier“Triggers when a contact successfully fills out an Ontraport or ONTRAPages Form.”
Fires when someone successfully fills out an Ontraport form or an ONTRAPages form, and hands over that submission. It is the trigger for anything that should follow a specific form rather than your whole list.
Product Purchased
Instant triggerIn Zapier“purchase object whenever specified product is purchased”
Reacts when a chosen product is bought, and passes the purchase record to the following steps. It is the trigger to use when what matters is who bought what, rather than the invoice that goes with it.
Tag Added
Instant triggerIn Zapier“Triggers when a tag is successfully added to a contact or a custom object.”
Starts the Zap when a tag is added to a contact or to a custom object in Ontraport. Tags often carry your segmentation, so this trigger lets a single label change switch things on in other tools.
Transaction Created With Product
Instant triggerIn Zapier“invoice object whenever specified product is purchased”
Fires when a chosen product is purchased, but hands over the invoice side of the sale rather than the purchase record. That makes it the better fit for anything that lives in accounting or reporting.
Tag Removed
Instant triggerIn Zapier“Triggers when a tag is successfully removed from a contact or custom object.”
Taking a tag off a contact or a custom object is what starts this one. The mirror of Tag Added: when a tag opened something in another tool, this is the cleanest way to close it.
The 3 Ontraport actions
Ontraport gives you 3 actions. For each one: what it does for you, when to reach for it, and what to watch out for.
Operations index
Add Tags to Contact
ActionIn Zapier“Adds Tags to the specified contact.”
Puts one or more tags on a contact you point to, so Ontraport's own sequences and segments can take over from there.
Create or Update Contact
ActionIn Zapier“Creates or updates a contact in Ontraport.”
Adds a contact to Ontraport, or updates the existing one, with what the earlier steps carried. One action covers both new leads and returning ones.
API Request (Beta)
ActionIn Zapier“This is an advanced action which makes a raw HTTP request that includes this integration's authentication.”
An advanced step, still in beta, that sends a request of your own to Ontraport using your existing connection. It covers what the ready-made actions do not, provided you know how to write it.
The Ontraport search
1 search step looks for data that already exists in Ontraport, so a later step can use it.
A search step looks up a contact that already exists, so the steps after it can use it. In the editor, it sits at the bottom of the action-event list, under its own SEARCH heading. Three settings decide what happens when the result is not the one expected.
Find Contact
SearchIn Zapier“Finds an existing Contact.”
Looks up an existing contact from a search term and hands it to the next steps, which is how Add Tags to Contact knows who to tag.
The three settings every search exposes
- Successful if no search results are found?Left on its default, a search that finds nothing stops the Zap there and skips the steps that depended on it. Switched on, the Zap carries on without the contact.
- Create X if it doesn't exist yet? This box turns a search into a find-or-create. Ontraport offers no such variant on Zapier, so it does not apply to Find Contact.
- If multiple search results are found?Three ways out when several contacts match: keep the first one, which is the default, stop the Zap, or hand all of them on at once.
When an Ontraport Zap breaks
Zapier attaches one help article to Ontraport, a getting-started guide, and no documented error. What breaks here comes from the choices each trigger requires and from the limits every Zap shares.
Most of these do not show up on day one. They appear as a contact not found, a tag loop or a task count draining faster than planned. When one hits, start with the Zapier troubleshooting page.
Find Contact misses a contact you can see
The search only covers the fields displayed in your current contact view in Ontraport. If the field you search on is hidden there, the contact is never found. The tag loop
Tag Added on a tag, then Add Tags to Contact with the same tag: the Zap writes where its own trigger watches and sets itself off again, burning tasks. The contact loop
New Contact feeding Create or Update Contact on the same account creates contacts that start the Zap again. Keep the two in separate accounts or flows. One sale counted twice
Product Purchased and Transaction Created With Product both fire for the same product sale. Two Zaps on the same product, one per trigger, record it twice.Old contacts and sales are ignored
A Zap only reacts to what happens after it is switched on. Contacts, purchases and tags from before you publish are never picked up; moving them is a separate job.A bulk import gets held back
When a trigger suddenly returns a huge batch, after a bulk import or a migration, Zapier's flood protection can hold the runs back instead of firing them all.
