Free SEO Course: the 6 Best in 2026, and Which Certificates Are Really Free
We compared the free SEO courses from Semrush, Ahrefs, HubSpot, Yoast, Blue Array and Simplilearn, with Google's own guide as a reference: what's free, which certificate costs money or expires, and which one fits your job.
The short answer. The best free SEO course with a certificate is Semrush Academy's SEO Essentials: 20 lessons, 1 h 42, AI visibility included, and a certificate on completion. The best free start without signing up is Ahrefs' SEO Course for Beginners: 14 lessons, 2 hours.
By profile. Want to understand SEO in AI answers? HubSpot's AEO Fundamentals, the free certification that HubSpot launched after retiring its SEO certification. Writing on WordPress? Yoast. Handling the technical side? Blue Array's Technical SEO Training on Alison. Need the simplest certificate for a résumé? Simplilearn SkillUp. Whatever you pick, keep Google's free SEO Starter Guide open next to it: it's documentation, not a course, so it isn't ranked.
The trap is the free course with a paid certificate, or a certificate that no longer exists. Below: a table of what each free course really gives you, our full reviews, 8 tips to get the most out of a free SEO course, and the signals that tell you when paying makes sense. Comparing paid options too? Read our best SEO courses ranking.
The ranking is editorial: a sponsored spot is always flagged on its card, and no affiliate link changes a score. The scores are ours, based on five criteria, and the rank follows the score.
What each free SEO course actually gives you
The last line of each card says where the free part ends. Keep these four cases in mind as you read:
- Free course, certificate on completion: the provider offers a certificate when you finish; check whether it states the certificate is free.
- Free course, no proof: the content is open, nothing certifies you finished.
- Free course, paid certificate: you study for free, you pay for the proof.
- Not free at all: a trial or a subscription, even if the button says “Enroll for free”.
Terms read on each provider's official pages in 2026.

Google's SEO Starter Guide is free documentation, not a course: we cite it as a reference, outside the ranking. Great Learning's SEO for Beginners is free to study, but its certificate needs a non-refundable fee. Coursera's UC Davis SEO Specialization says it can't be taken for free. Reliablesoft's free SEO course gives a certificate only through its paid full digital marketing course. Moz, Google Digital Garage and eMarketing Institute weren't ranked in this edition: we didn't recheck their current terms.
Semrush Academy · SEO Essentials with Semrush
SEO Essentials is the main free SEO course of Semrush Academy. Kyle Byers, Director of Organic Search at Semrush, and Rita Cidre, Head of Academy, walk you through 20 video lessons that add up to 1 h 42. The order is the one you'd follow on a real site: what SEO is and its three components, competitive research to measure your visibility, keyword research, on-page SEO, technical SEO with a Site Audit walkthrough, off-page SEO and backlink analysis. Two lessons cover AI visibility, meaning how your brand shows up in AI answers, and a bonus lesson covers local SEO.
The certificate is the strong point. You earn a Semrush Academy certificate when you complete the free course: the course exam holds 10 to 15 questions, you get three attempts, and if you fail all three you wait a month. Each certificate is valid for one year from the date you complete it, so plan to renew it if you show it on LinkedIn. One honest warning: the hands-on lessons use Semrush tools, and the course asks you to have an account and a project ready. The software itself is paid after a seven-day trial. For the tool, see our Semrush review and our Semrush training guide.
Once you're done, the same academy has two free follow-ups worth your time: the SEO Crash Course with Brian Dean (7 lessons, about 50 minutes) and the Technical SEO course with Bastian Grimm (21 lessons, about 80 minutes, with sitemaps, status codes, structured data, Core Web Vitals and AI crawlers).
- Certificate after a 10 to 15 question exam
- Two lessons on AI visibility
- Free follow-up courses on technical SEO
- ✓Covers the whole SEO cycle in under two hours
- ✓You get a certificate on completion of the free course
- ✓Taught by Semrush's Director of Organic Search and Head of Academy
- ✗Hands-on parts assume a Semrush account, paid after a 7-day trial
- ✗The certificate expires after one year
- ✗A vendor course: the tools shown are its own
The best free SEO course if you want a certificate: short, current on AI search, with a certificate at the end. Just remember it's also a tour of Semrush.
Ahrefs Academy · SEO Course for Beginners
Ahrefs' beginner course is the one most learners point to first, and the reason is simple: it's 14 lessons, 2 hours, and you don't even sign up. It opens with what SEO is and why it matters, then runs through four modules: keyword research, on-page SEO, link building and the basics of technical SEO. The course is built for people who know nothing about SEO yet, and Ahrefs lists marketing team leaders among the audiences.
What you won't get is a promised certificate: the course page doesn't mention one, so don't plan on proof for your CV. If you want a credential from Ahrefs, the separate How to Use Ahrefs course (63 lessons, about 3 h 20, free) leads to an optional 67 question certification exam, but that one teaches the tool, not SEO. Learner feedback praises how Sam Oh breaks the strategies into digestible pieces, and asks for more case studies and hands-on work. That's fair: plan to practice on your own site in parallel. Curious about the software? See our Ahrefs training guide.
- No sign-up, no payment details
- Keyword research, on-page, links and technical in 2 hours
- Mostly tool-agnostic
- ✓The fastest serious introduction to SEO
- ✓Nothing to create, nothing to cancel
- ✓Easy to share with a whole team in one link
- ✗No certificate promised on the course page
- ✗Few exercises and case studies
- ✗Some examples rely on Ahrefs tools
The best free starting point for most people. Pair it with a certificate course if you need proof.
HubSpot Academy · AEO Fundamentals
If a list sends you to the HubSpot SEO Certification, it's out of date. HubSpot retired that certification, and the same course address now opens AEO Fundamentals (answer engine optimization, meaning optimizing to be cited by AI answers as well as ranked). If you hadn't earned the old SEO certificate before it was retired, HubSpot says that course can no longer be completed; its two new AEO certifications cover a lot of the same foundational ground.
The course is a free certification: 7 lessons, 19 videos, 2 h 20, taught by Jorie Munroe and Jenn Sanchez. You'll go from how search engines became answer engines, to E-E-A-T (experience, expertise, authoritativeness, trust), keyword research and content planned for AI extraction, then a 42 minute lesson on auditing pages, on-page elements and schema markup, and a 35 minute lesson on measuring results. It doesn't depend on HubSpot's software.
- Free certificate signed by HubSpot Academy
- Schema markup and AI citations covered
- Successor to the retired HubSpot SEO certification
- ✓The most up-to-date free course on AI search
- ✓Product-agnostic, so it works whatever your stack
- ✓Solid measurement lesson to report to leadership
- ✗Less technical SEO than Ahrefs or Semrush
- ✗Validity of the certificate isn't stated on the page
- ✗Newer credential, so its weight on the job market is unproven
Take it after a classic SEO basics course. It's the free course that best explains what changes with AI answers.
Yoast SEO Academy · SEO for beginners
Yoast's free course packs about 2 hours of video into 20 short clips, with reading material and quizzes on top, so expect more time than the videos alone. It covers six topics: how search engines work, keywords, SEO copywriting, site structure, crawlability and rich results. That balance makes it the most writer-friendly course on this page.
You need a free MyYoast account to save progress, and you get a certificate and a badge once you finish. The rest of Yoast SEO Academy is unlocked by Yoast SEO Premium, listed at $118.80 a year excluding VAT, so the free course is also a door to the paid plugin. Not on WordPress? The SEO lessons still apply, but the examples lean on Yoast's world.
- Free certificate and badge
- SEO copywriting lesson
- Short clips, easy to fit in a workday
- ✓Good fit for writers and editors
- ✓Certificate at no cost
- ✓Quizzes to check what stuck
- ✗Light on links and competitive analysis
- ✗The rest of the academy needs Premium at $118.80 a year
- ✗Most useful if you're on WordPress
The best free pick for a content team on WordPress. Developers and SEO leads will want more depth.
Blue Array on Alison · Technical SEO Training
Most free SEO courses stop at the basics of technical SEO. This one is all about it. Blue Array, a UK SEO agency, built a 6 to 10 hour course hosted on Alison that teaches you to evaluate and crawl a website efficiently, then read what you find. The course is CPD accredited (continuing professional development, a recognized UK framework for professional training), which is rare for a free course.
The catch is the certificate. Studying on Alison is free, but the printed or digital certificate is something you buy at the end, so check its cost before you count on it. Decide upfront whether you need the proof or just the knowledge. Alison's pages also push upgrades, so read before you click.
- 6 to 10 hours on technical SEO alone
- CPD accredited
- Built by an SEO agency
- ✓The deepest free course on crawling and indexing
- ✓Content free to study
- ✓Good bridge between marketing and dev
- ✗The certificate is paid, price not shown upfront
- ✗Platform full of upsells
- ✗Too technical for a first course
The free course to take second, once the basics are clear. Budget for the certificate only if you need it.
Simplilearn SkillUp · Free SEO Course with Certificate for Beginners
SkillUp is Simplilearn's free catalog, and its beginner SEO course is exactly what it says: 3 hours of self-paced video on the types of SEO, how search engines crawl and index pages, and SEO practices. Simplilearn's own FAQ adds keyword research, on-page optimization and the basics of link building. Simplilearn says it's 100% free, and you get a verifiable certificate of completion when you finish.
It stays at the basics: short lessons, no graded project on your own site. Learner reviews describe it as well structured and easy to follow, which matches what it is: an introduction. Expect prompts toward Simplilearn's paid programs along the way.
- Free verifiable certificate
- No tool account needed
- 3 hours announced, beginner level
- ✓Very low barrier to entry
- ✓Certificate at no cost
- ✓Clear business framing of SEO
- ✗No project on your own site
- ✗Introductory only
- ✗Upsell prompts to paid programs
Fine as a first step with proof. Move on to Semrush or Ahrefs right after.
8 tips to learn SEO for free and finish with proof
These tips come from the official pages, learner feedback and our comparison. They prevent the usual mistakes: the certificate that no longer exists, the proof you pay for at the end, and the course you finish without ever touching a real site.
The tips
Connect Search Console before your first lesson
PracticeThe advice that comes back most often from SEO practitioners: theory is the easy part, testing on a site is the hard part. Connect Google Search Console (free) to your company site or a small test blog before you start. Every lesson on indexing, queries or snippets then has real numbers behind it. Keep Google's free SEO Starter Guide at hand too: it's the reference every course quotes. Two hours of course plus your own data beats ten hours of video alone.

- Search Console
- Cost
- $0
Check that the certificate still exists
HubSpotMany lists still send you to the HubSpot SEO Certification. HubSpot retired it and launched two AEO certifications, and the old course can no longer be completed. Open the course page yourself before investing hours, and look for the word “certification” on the page, not in the blog post that sent you there.
- Old
- HubSpot SEO Certification
- Now
- AEO Fundamentals
Find the price of the certificate before you start
Trap“Free course” often means free content. Great Learning charges a non-refundable fee for the certificate, Alison sells it at the end, and Coursera's UC Davis specialization says plainly it can't be taken for free. If you need proof for your employer, pick a course whose certificate is stated as free, such as Yoast, and check the certificate terms of Semrush, HubSpot or Simplilearn before you start. For a UK employer, Alison's CPD accreditation means the hours can count toward continuing professional development records, and you can ask to log the course as employer-sponsored training time.
- Stated free
- Yoast, Simplilearn
- On completion
- Semrush, HubSpot
- Paid at the end
- Alison, Great Learning
Put the expiry date in your calendar
SemrushSemrush Academy certificates are valid for one year from completion. If you show one on LinkedIn or in a client proposal, renew it before it lapses. You get three attempts at a 10 to 15 question exam, then a one month wait, so don't rush the exam on the last day.
- Validity
- 1 year
- Attempts
- 3
Stack two short courses instead of one long one
MethodAhrefs (2 hours, tool-agnostic) then Semrush SEO Essentials (1 h 42, certificate) gives you the basics twice from two angles, plus proof, in under four hours. Add HubSpot's AEO Fundamentals (2 h 20) if your content team worries about AI answers. Three free courses, about six hours, three different teaching styles.
- Total
- About 6 h
- Cost
- $0
Don't start a tool trial on day one
ToolsSemrush and Ahrefs teach SEO for free because they sell software. Semrush's course asks you to have an account ready, and the paid tool starts after a seven-day trial. Watch the lessons first, then open the trial when you have a week to practice. Otherwise the trial runs out while you're still on the intro video.
- Semrush trial
- 7 days
- Habit
- Trial last, not first
Train a team with one link, then compare notes
TeamFor a marketing team, the Ahrefs course is the easiest to roll out: one link, no sign-up, two hours. Ask everyone to run one keyword research and one page audit on your site afterwards, then compare results in a 30 minute meeting. Those exercises show who needs a certificate course next, and who needs the technical course.
- Rollout
- One link
- Follow-up
- 30 min debrief
Add AI search to the plan
2026Ranking on Google and being cited in AI answers now go together. Semrush SEO Essentials has two AI visibility lessons, Semrush's technical course covers AI crawlers, and HubSpot built a whole free certification around it. Don't take a free SEO course that never mentions AI answers: it's likely older than it looks.
- Semrush
- 2 AI lessons
- HubSpot
- Full AEO course

Stay free or pay: 6 signals
Ahrefs plus Semrush SEO Essentials cover them in under four hours, with a certificate on completion.
Yoast's certificate is free; Semrush and HubSpot give one on completion. Renew Semrush's every year.
Blue Array's 6 to 10 hour course goes deep for free, and Google's Search Central documentation is the free reference to read alongside it.
No free course here reviews your work. For that, look at paid training with coaching or a project.
The UC Davis specialization on Coursera is paid, with financial aid for those who qualify.
Free courses are short and vendor-led. A paid program gives one curriculum, assessments and follow-up: Noble Desktop's SEO Bootcamp costs $650 in full tuition, Bruce Clay's SEOtraining.com $99 a month, and Coursera Plus, which opens the UC Davis specialization, $399 a year. Budget the team's time too: the free path above takes about six hours per person. A paid program is often covered by the employer's training budget, so ask your L&D or HR team before you pay yourself. The ranking is editorial: a sponsored spot is always marked on its card, and no affiliate link changes a score. Compare programs in our best SEO courses ranking, or the best local SEO courses for a business with a storefront. Teams on WordPress or HubSpot can add the WordPress training or HubSpot training, and the free AI courses cover the AI side.
Free SEO courses: frequently asked questions
Is there a free SEO course with a certificate?
Yes. Yoast's SEO for beginners states its certificate is free, and Simplilearn SkillUp's 100% free course includes a verifiable one. Semrush Academy's SEO Essentials and HubSpot's AEO Fundamentals give a certificate on completion of a free course. Ahrefs' beginner course doesn't promise one, and Google Search Central has no certificate. On Alison and Great Learning, the course is free but the certificate is paid.Is the HubSpot SEO certification still free?
No, because it no longer exists. HubSpot retired its SEO certification and launched two AEO certifications. The first, AEO Fundamentals, is free, takes 2 h 20, and covers keyword research, schema markup and AI citations.Does Google offer a free SEO certification?
No. Google publishes the free SEO Starter Guide and the rest of its Search Central documentation, but no exam or certificate. The UC Davis course on Coursera has Google in its title, yet it's a paid university course, not a Google certification. How long does it take to learn SEO with free courses?
About six hours gets you the foundations: Ahrefs (2 hours), Semrush SEO Essentials (1 h 42) and HubSpot AEO Fundamentals (2 h 20). Add 6 to 10 hours for Blue Array's technical course. Real skill comes after, from weeks of practice on a site with Search Console connected.Do Semrush certificates expire?
Yes. Each Semrush Academy certificate is valid for one year from the date you complete it. The exam has 10 to 15 questions and you get three attempts; after that, you wait one month before trying again. Are free SEO certificates worth anything to employers?
They show you finished a course, not that you can rank a page. Many SEO hiring managers care more about results on a real site. Use the certificate as a signal on LinkedIn, and back it up with a short case: a page you audited, a keyword you moved, a fix you shipped. Can I learn SEO without paying for Semrush or Ahrefs?
Yes. The Ahrefs and Semrush courses themselves are free, and Google Search Console, Google Trends and Google's documentation cost nothing. You'll miss some paid features shown in the hands-on lessons, so watch those parts and practice with Search Console data instead.Which free SEO course is best for a marketing team?
Ahrefs' SEO Course for Beginners, because it needs no sign-up: one link, two hours, the same basics for everyone. Follow it with Semrush SEO Essentials for those who need a certificate, and Yoast for writers on WordPress.
