Which marketing automation software should an agency pick in 2026?

The feature list isn't the decision. What your next client costs you is.

A business buys marketing automation for itself. An agency buys it for ten, twenty or fifty clients, and the questions change. Does each client get a separate workspace? Who pays the license? What does client number eleven cost? And what happens when a client leaves and wants their data back? Most "best tools for agencies" lists skip all four. We compared six platforms on exactly those points, using official pricing pages, partner program terms and complaints from agency owners.

Short answer: GoHighLevel if you want one subscription for your whole roster, with unlimited sub-accounts from $297 a month and white label. ActiveCampaign if you sell sophisticated email automation and resell licenses at a 25% to 55% discount. HubSpot if your B2B clients pay for their own seats and you bill for the work. Brevo for small budgets, one account per client. Mautic if you have a developer and want to host everything yourself.

One rule for all of them: open accounts in the client's name whenever you can. It's the clause that saves you a fight when a contract ends.

6 platforms compared for agencies

Rank follows what a 3 to 30 person agency needs when it runs acquisition and retention for several clients. The score is the one each tool carries across the site, which is why rank and score don't always line up. The "account model" column tells you how clients are kept apart.

How we ranked

How we compared and scored

For an agency, marketing automation comes down to one question: can you run each client separately without your margin shrinking every time you sign a new one? The account model matters more than the feature count. That's why rank here follows agency use, not the score.

We read each vendor's official pricing page, partner program terms and help docs on sub-accounts, then reviews and complaints from agency owners on review sites and community forums. We also read the lists ranking on Google for this query. Several are from 2020 to 2022, none works out cost per client, and few explain how two clients' data stay apart.

Five tools are missing on purpose. Wishpond, Keap, SharpSpring and Act-On show up in US lists, but we couldn't read an agency offer with its pricing on their official pages. Plezi doesn't publish prices on a page we could open. Client reporting is a separate purchase: AgencyAnalytics has its own review.

Each tool carries the same score everywhere on the site. HubSpot, ActiveCampaign and Brevo keep their review score, GoHighLevel the one from our agency CRM ranking, Vendasta the one from our local SEO ranking.

1
Best marketing automation software for running every client under one subscription

GoHighLevel

4.3/5

GoHighLevel is the only platform here built for agencies first. You get an agency account, and every client lives in a sub-account with its own contacts, workflows, pages and calendar. You control which team members can see which sub-accounts.

The price doesn't climb with each client. Starter is $97 a month for 3 sub-accounts. Unlimited is $297 a month with unlimited sub-accounts and lets you rebill phone and email costs to clients at cost. Founder, at $497 a month, adds rebilling with your own markup and SaaS Mode, which turns the platform into software you sell under your name. Contacts and users are unlimited on every plan. At ten clients on Unlimited, that's $29.70 per client per month; at twenty-five, $11.88.

The catch: anything consumed costs extra (SMS, email, calls, AI), and add-ons are priced per sub-account, like the branded client portal app at $49 a month each. Users report repeated wallet auto-recharges and charges after cancellation. And the learning curve is real.

Tip: cap the auto-recharge on every sub-account the day you create it, and pass usage through to clients from Unlimited onward. Start on Starter with your first three clients and move to Unlimited at the fourth, which is where per-client cost drops off a cliff.

Standout features
  • Unlimited sub-accounts from $297
  • Unlimited contacts and users
  • White-label web app
+Pros
  • ✓One subscription for the whole roster
  • ✓Usage rebilling
  • ✓Per-sub-account team permissions
−Cons
  • ✗Usage billed on top
  • ✗Steep learning curve
  • ✗Billing complaints
Verdict

The best pick once you manage more than three clients with similar needs. Watch usage: that's where the bill drifts.

2
Best marketing automation software for agencies reselling email automation

ActiveCampaign

4.2/5

ActiveCampaign is where agencies go when they sell email automation done properly. Its workflow builder handles conditions, waits and goals, with 900+ prebuilt recipes. Each client gets its own account, and the Agency Program gives you a reseller dashboard to jump between them.

Pricing is per client and per list size. At 1,000 contacts billed yearly, Starter is $15, Plus $49, Pro $79 and Enterprise $145 a month. Resell the licenses and your discount scales with your roster: 25% from 2 to 24 accounts, 35% from 25 to 49, 45% from 50 to 99, 55% beyond that. A single account stays at list price. ActiveCampaign doesn't bill resold clients, so you set your own price and collect it. A $49 Plus account drops to $36.75 at 25% off.

The catch: no white-label interface, and each client is one more license that grows with their contacts. Advanced CRM, SMS and some reporting are paid add-ons.

Tip: resell to clients who want an all-in retainer, refer for commission the ones who'd rather pay ActiveCampaign directly. Both live in the same partner portal. And get account number two set up fast: it's what unlocks the 25% tier on the next billing cycle.

Standout features
  • Deep workflow logic
  • Reseller discount up to 55%
  • Reseller dashboard
+Pros
  • ✓Some of the richest email automation around
  • ✓You set your resale price
  • ✓900+ recipes
−Cons
  • ✗One license per client
  • ✗No white-label interface
  • ✗Paid add-ons
Verdict

The strongest email engine for an agency that bills for expertise. Reselling pays off after a handful of clients.

3
Best marketing automation software for B2B agencies whose clients own their seats

HubSpot

4.2/5

With HubSpot, the agency doesn't resell software. It sells its work inside the client's portal. Every client owns their account, and you get access as their partner. When they leave, they keep everything, which is exactly what B2B buyers want to hear.

On the client side, Starter seats list at $20 a month. Real automation starts at Professional: $800 a month billed yearly for 3 seats, plus a mandatory $3,000 onboarding fee, so roughly $12,600 in year one. On the agency side, becoming a Solutions Partner means keeping a $400 minimum monthly spend, through the Partner Program Membership or at least $400 of HubSpot products after discount, then reaching Gold tier within 24 months.

The catch: no plan covers your roster. Each client pays HubSpot list price for their own portal, with no white label and no rebilling. For a small business, the jump to Professional is brutal.

Tip: start clients on free or Starter and only push Professional with a written plan for what they'll use (lead scoring, workflows, attribution reports). Get your agency added as the portal's partner so you have access without sharing passwords.

Standout features
  • Portal owned by the client
  • Full B2B automation on Pro
  • Large partner ecosystem
+Pros
  • ✓Client keeps their data
  • ✓Free to start
  • ✓Lead scoring and attribution on Pro
−Cons
  • ✗Pro at $800 a month per client
  • ✗Mandatory onboarding fee
  • ✗No white label or rebilling
Verdict

Right when your B2B clients have budget and want to own their stack. Out of reach for a roster of small businesses.

4
Best marketing automation software for agencies with small-budget clients

Brevo

4.1/5

Brevo, formerly Sendinblue, is the cheapest way here to run email and SMS automation for a client. The free plan sends 300 emails a day, and Standard at $18 a month unlocks multi-step workflows, A/B tests and website tracking.

For an agency, the simplest model is one account per client, in the client's name, with you invited as a user. True multi-account management, with separate sub-accounts that each get their own IP and API key plus consolidated billing, is Enterprise only and quote-based. Brevo's agency partner program lets you invite clients, but only clients who haven't bought a recurring plan yet earn you commission.

The catch: Brevo suspends accounts quickly when a list throws too many bounces or complaints, and users describe support that's hard to reach during a suspension. For an agency, that's a client relationship risk.

Tip: clean every client list before the first send, and have the client open the account with their own card. If it gets suspended, it's their account, not yours, and your other clients aren't affected.

Standout features
  • Automation from $18
  • Free at 300 emails a day
  • Email, SMS and WhatsApp
+Pros
  • ✓Very low entry price
  • ✓Easy to hand over to a client
  • ✓Transactional email included
−Cons
  • ✗Sub-accounts only on Enterprise
  • ✗Reported account suspensions
  • ✗No white label
Verdict

Best value for modest clients, as long as each client has their own account.

5
Best open-source marketing automation for agencies that host client instances

Mautic

3.6/5

Mautic is the largest open-source marketing automation project. You install it on your own server or with a host: no license, no cap on contacts or users. For an agency, it's the only model where you control everything: domain, hosting, branding and data.

The setup that keeps coming up on the Mautic forum is one instance per client: a subdomain and a database each, on shared infrastructure. Putting several clients in a single instance raises the risk of one client seeing another's data. Forum members also advise updating all instances together, since they share the same stack.

The catch: the software is free, your time isn't. Installation, updates, email deliverability (you plug in a sending service), backups: all yours. Without technical skills on the team, the savings vanish fast.

Tip: estimate maintenance hours before choosing Mautic, and build them into your retainer. Keep one clean base instance you can clone for each new client.

Standout features
  • No license fee
  • Data on your infrastructure
  • One instance per client
+Pros
  • ✓Free with no caps
  • ✓Your brand and domain
  • ✓Full data portability
−Cons
  • ✗Maintenance is on you
  • ✗Sending service to plug in
  • ✗No native multi-client console
Verdict

Unbeatable on data control and license cost, if someone on your team owns the upkeep.

Best white-label platform for agencies reselling to local businesses

Vendasta

3.5/5

Vendasta isn't just marketing automation. It's a reselling platform. You pick products from a catalog (reputation, listings, email and SMS, CRM, AI) and resell them to clients through a portal with your name on it.

Pricing is a monthly minimum, not a subscription: what you spend on qualifying products counts toward it, and if you fall short, you pay only the difference. Starter is a $99 minimum with no contract, but it's co-branded with Vendasta. A white-label client portal starts at Professional, $499 a month on a one-year contract. Premium is $999.

The catch: the one-year commitment from Professional up, and reviews describing disputed cancellation notice periods, refused refunds and slow third-party fulfillment. The automation itself is shallower than ActiveCampaign or HubSpot.

Tip: stay on Starter until three clients are paying, since there's no contract. Before Professional, get the notice period and what counts toward the minimum written into the agreement.

Standout features
  • Resellable product catalog
  • Client portal under your brand
  • Minimum spend, not a subscription
+Pros
  • ✓Built for reselling
  • ✓Full white label from Professional
  • ✓No-contract Starter
−Cons
  • ✗One-year contract from $499
  • ✗Shallower automation
  • ✗Cancellation complaints
Verdict

Useful if you want to become a reseller of a full catalog. Too much commitment if you just need an automation tool.

The traps

What "best tools" lists don't tell agencies

Lists give you names. They don't say who owns the account, what one more client costs, or how you hand data back to a client who leaves.

Accounts in the agency's name

Opening every account under your agency keeps you in control, but it turns every client exit into a negotiation over contacts, history and workflows. With HubSpot, Brevo or ActiveCampaign on commission, have the client own the account and give you admin access. When you resell, put the export terms in your contract.

Cost that scales with clients

Per-account pricing costs ten times more at ten clients. GoHighLevel and Mautic break that model, ActiveCampaign softens it with its reseller discount. Run the math at 3, 10 and 25 clients before choosing, not at the entry price.

Usage on top

SMS, email, calls and AI: on GoHighLevel, Brevo and Vendasta, part of the bill depends on consumption. Rebill it on its own line, or one client blasting SMS eats your margin.

  • Who owns the account and the card on file?
  • What does client number 11 cost?
  • Are two clients' data truly separate?
  • Can you rebill usage, with or without markup?
  • What's the cancellation notice?
Run the numbers

Picking your agency platform in five steps

Five steps drawn from official pricing pages and agency feedback. They apply to every tool in this ranking.

01

Count your clients twelve months out

Priority

The right tool at 3 clients isn't the right tool at 30. Write down how many clients you expect in a year, their list sizes and the channels they need (email only, or SMS and phone too).

Under 4 clients, one account each on Brevo or ActiveCampaign is fine. Past that, a sub-account platform like GoHighLevel starts to win.

Tipping point

02

Work out cost per client at 3, 10 and 25

Math

GoHighLevel Unlimited: $297 split across 10 clients is $29.70 each, $11.88 at 25. ActiveCampaign Plus at 1,000 contacts: $49 per client at list, $36.75 with the 25% reseller discount, $31.85 at 35% from 25 accounts. HubSpot Pro: $800 a month per client plus onboarding.

Add usage (SMS, email) and your maintenance time, especially on Mautic.

03

Decide who owns each account

Trap

When you resell (GoHighLevel, ActiveCampaign resold, Vendasta), the account is yours: write into your contract how you export contacts and workflows if the client leaves. On commission or client-owned accounts (HubSpot, Brevo), the client pays and owns it, and you get admin access.

Time saver

05

Rebill usage on its own line

SMS, calls and AI aren't fixed costs. On GoHighLevel Unlimited, phone and email rebilling is at cost; a markup needs Founder. Elsewhere, rebill actual usage monthly with a written cap per client.

FAQ · 7 questions

Marketing automation for agencies · FAQ

  • How much does GoHighLevel cost for an agency?
$97 a month on Starter for 3 sub-accounts, $297 on Unlimited for unlimited sub-accounts, $497 on Founder to rebill usage with your own markup. SMS, email, calls and AI are billed on top by usage. Cap the wallet auto-recharge on each sub-account when you create it.
  • Should client accounts be in the agency's name or the client's?
The client's, whenever the tool allows, with you as admin: they keep their data if they leave and you skip a painful migration. When you resell, write into the contract how, and within how many days, you export their contacts and workflows.
  • What discount does ActiveCampaign give agencies?
On resold accounts: 25% for 2 to 24 accounts, 35% for 25 to 49, 45% for 50 to 99 and 55% for 100 or more. A single account stays at list price. ActiveCampaign doesn't bill your resold clients, so you set the price and collect it.
  • Can Brevo manage multiple clients from one login?
Yes, but multi-account management with separate sub-accounts (own IP and API key, single invoice) is Enterprise only, on a custom quote. For a small agency, one Brevo account per client, opened by the client, is simpler.
  • Which marketing automation platform can I white label?
GoHighLevel lets you brand the web app, and a white-label mobile app is a $497 a month add-on. Vendasta brands the client portal from Professional, $499 a month on a one-year contract. Self-hosted Mautic carries your name with no license at all.
  • How does an agency become a HubSpot Solutions Partner?
You keep a $400 minimum monthly spend, through the Partner Program Membership or at least $400 of HubSpot products after discount, then reach Gold tier within 24 months. Partnership doesn't publicly lower your clients' license prices: each client pays for their own portal.
  • Is open-source Mautic really free for an agency?
The license is, with no cap on contacts or users. Hosting, updates, backups and an email sending service are on you. Run one instance per client to keep data separate, and bill maintenance in your retainer.
