What's the best referral software for SaaS in 2026?

The one that plugs into your billing, rewards the referrer once the new customer actually pays, and blocks accounts created just to grab the bonus. Entry plans run from $49 to $449 a month.

A SaaS referral program sounds simple: a happy customer shares a link, a peer subscribes, and both get something, a free month, a credit on the next invoice, or cash. The hard part is the plumbing. You need to know the referred user paid (not just signed up), apply the reward to the right Stripe invoice, and avoid paying someone who refers themselves with a second email.

The short answer: FirstPromoter is the most balanced pick for a SaaS on Stripe, Paddle or Chargebee, with free-month and credit rewards on its entry plan. Rewardful is the fastest to connect, but invoice credits need a developer. Tolt puts a referral widget inside your app with no payout fees. Cello is built for user-to-user referrals in B2B software. Referral Factory and GrowSurf are pure referral tools priced by user count. Tapfiliate is an affiliate tool first.

One thing to know upfront: most of these tools started as affiliate platforms for bloggers and partners. Customer referrals are often an add-on. For each one, we spell out what works out of the box and what needs engineering time.

How we rank

How we compared and scored

Most pages ranking for this query are written by a vendor that puts itself first, or by an email tool that lists five names in passing. None of them explain when the reward fires, whether the credit lands on the Stripe invoice by itself, or what paying referrers costs you on top of the plan.

We compared official pricing pages, Stripe docs and fraud settings for all seven tools, then read user reviews and founder threads. Each tool is judged on four things: it connects to your billing, it rewards in a way that makes sense for a subscription, it blocks self-referrals, and it shows up inside your product rather than in a separate affiliate portal.

Some tools didn't make the cut. ReferralHero is $249 a month with no Stripe or API access; you need the $399 plan to connect billing. Partnero has a solid referral offer (reward on the referred user's payment, 30-day trial, $59 a month), but its pricing page says nothing about fraud, so it stays on our watch list. Viral Loops doesn't show a readable price. PartnerStack, Friendbuy, Talkable, Extole, SaaSquatch and Impact.com are enterprise tools sold through a demo.

Best overall

FirstPromoter

4.3/5

FirstPromoter started as an affiliate tool for SaaS, but it handles customer referrals better than anything else we compared. Non-cash rewards (free months, credits, points, discounts) are on every plan, including Starter, where other tools lock them to higher tiers or leave them to your engineers. It creates the coupons in Stripe and keeps them in sync.

On billing, it has the widest coverage in this ranking: Stripe, Paddle, Chargebee, Recurly and Braintree. You can import your Stripe history so you don't start from zero. Fraud protection is identical on every plan: self-referral detection, reCAPTCHA, manual approval thresholds, and automatic negative commissions when a referred customer gets a refund. That last one stops you from rewarding an account that churns after three days.

Pricing follows referred revenue: $49 a month up to $5,000 a month, $99 up to $15,000, $149 beyond that. Team seats are unlimited. On Business, you can embed the referrer dashboard in your app, and you get one-click PayPal payouts. The catch: rewarding only the referrer, with no discount for the new customer, requires Enterprise.

Standout features
  • Free months and credits on Starter
  • Stripe, Paddle, Chargebee, Recurly and Braintree
  • Automatic clawback on refunds
+Pros
  • ✓Widest billing coverage in the ranking
  • ✓Full fraud controls on every plan
  • ✓Unlimited team seats
−Cons
  • ✗Starter caps at $5K referred revenue a month
  • ✗In-app dashboard requires Business
  • ✗One-sided rewards need Enterprise
Verdict

The default pick for a SaaS that wants a clean referral program without pulling in a developer. If referrals need to live entirely inside your product, look at Tolt or Cello too.

Fastest Stripe setup

Rewardful

4.2/5

Rewardful is one of the names founders recommend most when someone asks for a referral tool, and it now belongs to saas.group. Its strength is setup: the Stripe connection takes minutes, and reviewers almost all praise how easy it is to get going. It takes no cut of your transactions, allows unlimited affiliates, and includes double-sided incentives and coupon-code tracking on Starter.

Read the docs before you sign, though. Customer referrals paid as invoice credits are not automatic. You create the referrer through the API with their Stripe customer ID, listen for the payout-due webhook, credit the customer's Stripe balance yourself, then mark the payout as paid. And the affiliate portal only shows cash commissions, so if you reward with credits or free months, you have to build your own referral page in your app.

Starter covers up to $7,500 in referred revenue a month, a bit more than FirstPromoter at the same price, but with one campaign and two team seats. Growth at $99 adds unlimited campaigns, a branded portal and custom rewards. If Rewardful handles payouts for you, it takes 3% of each payout. Some users find it pricey next to tools at half the price, and too basic once a program matures.

Standout features
  • Stripe connected in minutes
  • Double-sided rewards on Starter
  • First-touch or last-touch attribution
+Pros
  • ✓The easiest setup in the ranking
  • ✓0% transaction fees
  • ✓Up to $7.5K referred revenue from $49
−Cons
  • ✗Invoice credits require API work
  • ✗Portal only shows cash commissions
  • ✗One campaign on Starter
Verdict

Great if you pay referrers in cash, or if a developer can wire the Stripe balance credit. If you want free months without touching code, FirstPromoter does it for the same price.

3
Best in-app widget, no payout fees

Tolt

4.0/5

Tolt takes customer referrals seriously. On its entry plan you get a referral widget to drop into your app: the customer sees their link, their referrals and their reward, which can be a credit, a coupon or cash. A coupon for the new customer is included too. That's exactly the part Rewardful leaves to your developer.

Second selling point: Tolt charges nothing on payouts to your referrers. Elsewhere, paying people costs you 3% to 7% depending on the tool. It connects to Stripe, Paddle and Chargebee, with everything else through the API or webhooks. US teams will like that W-9, W-8 and 1099 tax forms are handled on every plan. Reviewers mention setup in under an hour and a co-founder who answers support himself.

The weak spot is fraud. Its Radar module, which catches self-referrals and duplicate IPs and holds paid-ad clicks until payment, is only on Pro at $199 a month. On Growth, you watch for abuse yourself. Reviews also flag light reporting, magic-link-only login, and several price increases, including the end of the free plan.

Standout features
  • In-app referral widget on Growth
  • $0 fees on payouts
  • 1099 and W-9 handling on all plans
+Pros
  • ✓Credit, coupon or cash with no code
  • ✓Up to $20K referred revenue from $99
  • ✓Fast setup, very present support
−Cons
  • ✗Fraud controls only on Pro at $199
  • ✗Reporting still light
  • ✗Prices raised several times
Verdict

The best features-for-price option for referrals that live in your product. Budget for Pro as soon as the program gets traction: without fraud controls, fake accounts slip through.

4
Best for B2B user referrals

Cello

3.9/5

Cello is the only tool here built from day one for user-to-user referrals inside software. The referral button lives in your product, right when the user is happy, and the reward fires when the referred company's invoice is paid. It connects to Stripe and Chargebee, HubSpot and Salesforce, and ships mobile SDKs.

Its real edge is everything after the referral. Cello pays your referrers itself via PayPal or Venmo, in any PayPal currency, handles tax and credit notes, and can pay recurring rewards as long as the referred customer stays. No transaction or FX fees. Users say it replaced a homegrown program where the team paid each referrer by hand. Self-referrals are detected automatically.

Pricing follows referred ARR: $65 a month up to $10,000, $200 up to $50,000, $750 up to $100,000. Cheap to start, but the next tier comes fast if the program works: $10,000 ARR is about twenty customers at $40 a month. Annual plans lock you in for 12 months. Paddle isn't in the listed integrations. The recurring request in reviews: more reward types.

Standout features
  • Referral button inside your product
  • PayPal and Venmo payouts with tax handled
  • 0% transaction and FX fees
+Pros
  • ✓Built for user referrals, not affiliates
  • ✓Takes referrer payouts off your plate
  • ✓Recurring rewards possible
−Cons
  • ✗Start tier outgrown quickly
  • ✗No Paddle in listed integrations
  • ✗12-month annual commitment
Verdict

The best pick for B2B software where every user can bring in a peer from another company. For a small SaaS on Paddle, or free-month rewards only, FirstPromoter is simpler.

5
Most users for the money

Referral Factory

3.9/5

Referral Factory does referrals and nothing else: no affiliate portal, no partner commissions. You build a campaign from templates, pick a reward for both sides, and connect Stripe, available on every plan. It flags suspicious signups, such as multiple accounts from the same IP or sketchy email addresses.

Pricing is per enrolled user: 20,000 for $200 a month, 40,000 for $400, and another 100,000 for $100. For a freemium SaaS, that's the best ratio among volume-priced tools here: GrowSurf asks $449 for 10,000 participants. Eligible startups get 50% off, so ask before you pay.

One technical constraint on invoice credits: the recipient must already exist as a Stripe customer. A referred user who hasn't paid yet can't get a credit at signup, which is actually good for fraud, as long as your terms say so. The $200 entry point is steep for an early-stage SaaS.

Standout features
  • Pure referral, no affiliates
  • Stripe on every plan
  • 100,000 extra users for $100
+Pros
  • ✓20,000 users on Basic
  • ✓Suspicious signup alerts
  • ✓50% off for eligible startups
−Cons
  • ✗$200 a month to start
  • ✗Stripe credits only for existing customers
  • ✗No affiliate management if you want it later
Verdict

The right tool if your program targets customers and only customers, with a big user base. Under 1,000 paying customers, a revenue-priced tool will cost you less.

6
Most hands-off on Stripe

GrowSurf

3.7/5

GrowSurf is the most automated option on Stripe. A referral is confirmed on the first successful payment from a customer whose email matches the referred participant, or when a Stripe Checkout session, Payment Link or Pricing Table purchase completes. The coupon or credit is then applied to the Stripe account with no one touching it, after your approval if manual review is on. If it fails, you get an email and apply it by hand.

The docs are clear on what credits do: they reduce the customer's bill, they never send cash. And they only work in the program's default currency, which matters if you bill in both dollars and euros. If a referred customer is refunded during the hold period, the referral is canceled, so set that period to at least your refund window. Fraud protection is on every plan.

Price is the hurdle. GrowSurf counts every unique email enrolled, and when you exceed your tier, you move up, prorated. $449 a month for 10,000 participants is heavy for a freemium product. The Startup plan no longer shows its price, and one reviewer notes the per-participant model fits poorly when a program is quiet.

Standout features
  • Stripe coupon or credit applied automatically
  • Triggers on first payment, not signup
  • Fraud protection on every plan
+Pros
  • ✓The most polished Stripe flow
  • ✓Auto-cancel on refund during hold
  • ✓Five programs on Business
−Cons
  • ✗$449 a month for 10,000 participants
  • ✗Startup price not listed
  • ✗Credits in one currency only
Verdict

The most comfortable choice on Stripe if you never want to touch a reward manually. For the price of Business, FirstPromoter or Tolt give you referrals and affiliates.

7
Most flexible for affiliates

Tapfiliate

3.7/5

Tapfiliate is a solid affiliate tool with about 30 integrations, Stripe included. It can track customer referrals, but everything is built around partners: links, clicks, conversions, commissions. It's here because many SaaS teams already use it for affiliates and wonder whether it's enough for customers.

Its pricing model is the worst fit for referrals. Launch, at $89 a month or $74 on annual, covers 50 affiliates, 5,000 clicks and 500 conversions, with overages at $1.50 per 1,000 clicks and $15 per 1,000 conversions. A program where every customer becomes a referrer blows past 50 affiliates quickly, which means Scale at $179, or $149 on annual.

Its pricing page doesn't highlight any fraud protection, so ask in the demo how it blocks self-referrals and what happens on refunds. No ready-made invoice credit either.

Standout features
  • About 30 integrations including Stripe
  • Lower annual pricing
  • Unlimited program on Scale
+Pros
  • ✓Good if affiliates come before customers
  • ✓$74 a month on annual Launch
  • ✓Many integrations
−Cons
  • ✗Only 50 affiliates on Launch
  • ✗Billed on clicks and conversions
  • ✗No fraud controls on the pricing page
Verdict

Keep it if you already run affiliates on it. To launch customer referrals, FirstPromoter or Tolt cost less and do more.

How to choose

Referral or affiliate, credit or cash: the three calls that matter

Before comparing features, three questions settle almost everything: who will recommend your SaaS, how you'll reward them, and how the tool meters its price.

In-app referral or affiliate portal?

Referrals reward your own customers, usually with a perk on your product, and work best when the invite sits inside your app. Affiliate programs pay outside partners a cash commission through a separate portal. Rewardful, FirstPromoter, Tolt and Tapfiliate were built for affiliates and do referrals as an option. Cello, Referral Factory and GrowSurf were built for referrals. Want both? FirstPromoter or Tolt.

Account credit or cash?

For a SaaS, credits and free months cost less than they look: you give product, not cash, and the customer stays to use it. A Stripe credit lowers the next invoice; it never pays out money. Cash motivates users who don't pay the bill themselves, like an employee at a B2B customer. That's where Cello, which handles payouts and tax, earns its price.

The pricing model

Three ways to meter. Referred revenue: FirstPromoter, Rewardful, Tolt and Cello, so price rises as the program earns. Users or participants: Referral Factory (20,000 for $200) and GrowSurf (10,000 for $449), which hurts with a big free tier. Clicks and conversions: Tapfiliate. Add payout fees if the tool pays for you: 3% at Rewardful, 0% at Tolt.
  • Confirm the tool supports your billing (Stripe, Paddle or Chargebee) on the plan you're buying.
  • Fire the reward on the referred customer's first payment, never on signup.
  • Set a hold period at least as long as your refund window.
  • Check whether fraud controls are on your plan or locked to the next one.
  • Ask whether invoice credits are automatic or need code.
  • Price the next tier now: a program that works outgrows the first one fast.
Field tips

Six settings that make your referral program work

SaaS referral programs rarely fail because of the tool. They fail on forgotten settings, a poorly thought-out reward, or payouts nobody planned for. Here's what comes up again and again among teams that launched one.

01

Reward on first payment, never on signup

Fraud

Rewarding signups invites fake accounts: it's the same mechanic as free-trial abuse with multiple emails. Wait for the referred user's first successful payment, or a usage threshold. GrowSurf and Partnero trigger on payment by default; at FirstPromoter, commissions reverse on their own after a refund.

Recommended trigger
First successful payment
02

Match the hold period to your refund window

Refunds

If you refund within 30 days, hold rewards for at least 30 days. At GrowSurf, a refund during the hold period cancels the referral, but an affiliate commission already paid isn't clawed back. Too short a hold, and you pay referrers for customers who already left.

Minimum hold
Your refund window
03

Collect tax forms before you pay cash

US

Cash rewards to US referrers come with tax paperwork. Tolt collects W-9, W-8 and 1099 forms on every plan, and Cello handles tax for the payouts it makes. If your tool doesn't, stick to credits and free months: they reduce an invoice instead of sending money.

Forms handled by Tolt
W-9, W-8, 1099
05

Check the currency of your credits

Stripe

At GrowSurf, Stripe credits only apply in the program's default currency. A customer billed in euros inside a dollar program gets nothing automatically. If you bill in several currencies, run one program per currency, or reward in free months instead of amounts.

Currencies per program
One at GrowSurf
06

Pick your tier on your best month

Pricing

At GrowSurf, going over your participant count bumps you to the next tier, prorated. At FirstPromoter and Rewardful, it's the month's referred revenue that counts. Size for your signup peak, not your average, and switch to annual once the program is stable: two months free at Tolt, 20% off at Referral Factory.

FAQ · 8 questions

SaaS referral software · FAQ

  • Referral program or affiliate program for my SaaS?
Referrals if your best advocates are customers, affiliates if they're outside partners. Many SaaS companies run both from one tool: FirstPromoter and Tolt handle both on their entry plans. Start with referrals, since rewards cost you less.
  • In-app referral widget or affiliate portal?
In-app, for customer referrals. Customers won't log into a separate portal to find their link. Tolt includes a widget on its entry plan, Cello is built around an in-product button, and FirstPromoter lets you embed the dashboard on Business. Rewardful's portal only shows cash commissions.
  • What reward works best for a SaaS referral program?
A free month or an account credit for both sides, in most cases. You give product rather than cash, and the referrer stays to use it. Keep cash for users who don't pay the bill themselves, like an employee at a B2B customer.
  • Which referral software works with Paddle or Chargebee?
FirstPromoter and Tolt support Stripe, Paddle and Chargebee. Cello connects to Stripe and Chargebee. Rewardful works with Stripe and Paddle. Referral Factory and GrowSurf are built mainly around Stripe, so check before you sign.
  • How do I stop customers from referring themselves?
Fire rewards on first payment and turn on self-referral detection. FirstPromoter, Rewardful, Cello and GrowSurf include it on every plan; Tolt needs Pro. Add a hold period as long as your refund window.
  • Do I need a developer to launch SaaS referrals?
Not with FirstPromoter, Tolt or GrowSurf for coupon or credit rewards. With Rewardful, yes for invoice credits: you go through the API and credit the Stripe balance yourself. Either way, plan a bit of engineering time to show the link in your app.
  • How much does a referral program cost with 10,000 free users?
It depends on how the tool meters. Per participant, GrowSurf charges $449 a month and Referral Factory $200 if all your users enroll. On referred revenue, FirstPromoter and Rewardful stay at $49 as long as referrals bring in under $5,000 or $7,500 a month.
  • Can I run referrals with Stripe coupons alone?
Yes, at low volume, with one promo code per customer and manual tracking. You lose referral links, automatic attribution, fraud checks and refund reversals. Past a few dozen referrals a month, a $49 tool saves more time than it costs.
