ChartMogul Zapier integrationAutomate ChartMogul with Zapier.

The ChartMogul Zapier integration brings 0 triggers, 17 actions and 7 searches. ChartMogul never starts a Zap. It receives: customer profiles, tags, custom attributes, call logs, opportunities and tasks, plus metrics that a Zap can read back out.

Overview

What the ChartMogul Zapier integration does

ChartMogul gives subscription businesses a way to measure revenue, make sense of it and grow it. Through Zapier it becomes the customer record your other tools write into: a form, a CRM or a help desk can add tags, notes or opportunities there, and pull a profile or a metric back out.

Three outcomes show up again and again. Self-segmenting customers: every NPS answer adds a tag through Add Tags to a Customer via Email. A full sales history: every call logged in your dialer lands on the profile through Create a Note or Call Log. A pipeline that stays current: a deal won in another tool opens or moves an opportunity with Create an Opportunity and Update an Opportunity.

What Zapier cannot do with ChartMogul matters just as much. No triggers: a new subscriber or a revenue change inside ChartMogul will not start a Zap, so another app always goes first. Nothing can be deleted. And most actions point at the customer through a ChartMogul identifier, its UUID. When the app that starts the Zap only carries an email or your own ID, a search has to come first, which makes the Zap multi-step.

ChartMogul is on Make as well. The ChartMogul Make integration page covers what it offers there, worth comparing before you commit.

Vocabulary

Zapier vocabulary in one minute

Eight terms, then the rest reads cleanly.

Zap
The automation you build on Zapier: one trigger, then one or more actions that run each time the trigger event happens.
Trigger
The event that starts the Zap. With ChartMogul it always comes from another app: a form, a CRM, a billing tool.
Action
What the Zap does after it starts: the step that writes something for you, here a tag, a note or an opportunity.
Task
The unit Zapier bills: one successful action. Your plan quota counts tasks, not how many Zaps ran.
Search step
A step that finds something that already exists, a customer or a contact, and passes what it found to the next steps.
Filter
A step that lets the Zap go on only when the incoming data meets your condition, and stops it otherwise.
Multi-step Zap
Any Zap beyond one trigger and one action. One filter or one search is enough, and it then needs a paid plan.
Connection
Your ChartMogul account linked to Zapier once, then reused by every step that talks to it across your Zaps.
Cost

What it really costs

ChartMogul is not a paid-only app, but most of what you will build with it ends up on a paid plan.

  • Free plan100 tasks a month, 2-step Zaps
  • Zap with a searchMulti-step, paid plan
  • Trigger cost0 tasks
  • Paid-only appNo

The trigger never costs a task, and only a successful action counts; a failed one costs nothing. The free plan gives you 100 tasks a month and two-step Zaps: one trigger, one action. That covers the actions that accept an email or an external ID, such as tags and custom attributes. The moment you need the customer UUID, a search joins the Zap, it turns multi-step, and from then on you are on a paid plan.

Connect

Connect your ChartMogul account

  1. 01

    Open Apps

In your Zapier account, go to the Apps page and click + Add connection. A dialog opens so you can search for the app you want to link by its name and add it.

  2. 02

    Pick ChartMogul

Type ChartMogul, select the app and confirm with Add connection. A new tab opens on the ChartMogul sign-in screen, which is where the link actually happens.

  3. 03

    Grant access

Sign in to ChartMogul in that tab and allow Zapier in. For opportunities and tasks, make sure the people you will assign are ChartMogul users with a CRM seat.

First Zap

Your first ChartMogul Zap

GoalWhen a customer answers the cancellation survey, find their ChartMogul profile and add the answer as a note.

  1. 01

    Set the trigger

Create a Zap, choose your form tool and its new-response event. Test it: Zapier fetches the three most recent responses, so pick one with a real customer email.

  2. 02

    Find the customer

Add a ChartMogul step and choose Search for Customer via Email, under the SEARCH heading of the Action event list. Map the email field from the form.

  3. 03

    Write the note

Add the Create a Note or Call Log action. Map the UUID the search returned, set the type to note, and drop the customer's answer into the text.

  4. 04

    Test the steps

Run each step once and open the customer in ChartMogul. The note should be there; if not, look at what the search returned before anything else.

  5. 05

    Publish

Click Publish. With the search in it, this Zap is multi-step and needs a paid plan. Our Zapier training covers builds like this one step by step.

Actions

ChartMogul actions

ChartMogul gives you 17 actions. For each one: what it does for you, when to reach for it, and what to watch out for.

1

Add a Custom Attribute to a Customer via Email

Action

In Zapier“Adds custom attributes to the customer in ChartMogul that have the given email address”

This time the customer's email is all it takes to attach a custom attribute, no search step required.

When to use it
a form answer, team size for example, should become a dimension you can analyze in ChartMogul.
Watch out
email, type, key and value are all required, and every profile sharing that email gets the attribute.
2

Add a Custom Attribute to a Customer via External ID

Action

In Zapier“Adds a custom attribute to the customer in ChartMogul that have the given external ID”

A variant driven by your external ID: the attribute goes to whichever customer your system knows under that code.

When to use it
your product database pushes usage data to ChartMogul and only deals in its own IDs.
Watch out
every profile with that external ID receives the attribute, and the value must follow the declared type.
3

Add a Custom Attribute to a Customer via UUID

Action

In Zapier“Add a custom attribute to the customer in ChartMogul that have the given UUID”

Enriches a customer, identified by UUID, with a custom attribute made of a key, a type and a value.

When to use it
to store on the profile something ChartMogul does not compute, such as the acquisition channel.
Watch out
the key only accepts letters, digits and underscores, and the value has to match the type you chose.
4

Create a Contact

Action

In Zapier“Creates a Contact object in ChartMogul under a specified customer within the selected Source.”

Attaches a person to an existing customer, inside a custom data source of your choice.

When to use it
a new stakeholder shows up at a customer account and you want them on the profile.
Watch out
customer UUID and data source UUID are required. If the customer has no record in that source yet, ChartMogul creates one and merges it into the target customer automatically.
5

Add Tags to a Customer via UUID

Action

In Zapier“Adds tags to the customer in ChartMogul that have the given UUID”

Sticks one or more tags on the customer identified by their ChartMogul UUID, so they fall into a segment.

When to use it
after a search has already returned the UUID, to label a customer by their answer or their plan.
Watch out
several tags go in the same field, separated by commas.
6

Add Tags to a Customer via Email

Action

In Zapier“Adds tags to the customer in ChartMogul that have the given email address”

Same segmentation move, but the email address is enough to target the customer: no search needed.

When to use it
on the free plan, in a two-step Zap, when the starting form already captures the email.
Watch out
if several profiles share that email, every one of them gets the tags.
7

Add Tags to a Customer via External ID

Action

In Zapier“Adds tags to the customer in ChartMogul that have the given external ID”

Here the customer is picked by the external ID from your own system, the one you supplied when the profile was created.

When to use it
your internal tool knows the account ID but not the email, and you want to tag without an extra step.
Watch out
every profile carrying that external ID receives the tags.
8

Create a Customer

Action

In Zapier“Create a customer profile in the target data source”

A brand-new customer profile appears in the data source you point to, keyed on the external ID from your own system.

When to use it
an account opened in your internal tool should exist in ChartMogul right away.
Watch out
the data source UUID and the external ID are both required; the external ID must be unique and only takes letters and digits.
9

Create a Note or Call Log

Action

In Zapier“Creates a note object with a note or call type under a specified customer.”

Puts a written note or a call summary on a customer's profile, depending on the type you pick.

When to use it
cancellation reasons or calls logged elsewhere should sit right next to the customer's revenue history.
Watch out
customer UUID, type (note or call) and text are all three required.
10

Create an Opportunity

Action

In Zapier“Creates an opportunity object for a specified customer in ChartMogul.”

Opens a sales opportunity on a customer, with an expected amount, a currency and an estimated close date.

When to use it
a deal created in another tool should also live in the ChartMogul pipeline.
Watch out
the pipeline and stage must already exist, the owner needs a CRM seat, the date follows ISO 8601, and the amount goes in cents.
11

Create a Task

Action

In Zapier“Creates a task object for a specified ChartMogul user.”

Hands a ChartMogul user a customer-related to-do with a due date.

When to use it
a support ticket flags churn risk and an account manager should call the customer back.
Watch out
the task details cap at 255 characters, and the assignee must be a user with a CRM seat, given by their email.
12

Merge Customers

Action

In Zapier“Consolidates the ChartMogul profiles of the two target Customer UUIDs”

Folds two ChartMogul profiles into one: the first UUID is absorbed into the second.

When to use it
the same customer exists twice, say created from two sources, and your metrics count them double.
Watch out
order matters, the first field is the profile being merged and the second is the one receiving it; double-check both before you publish.
13

Update a Contact

Action

In Zapier“Updates certain modifiable attributes of a contact object in your ChartMogul account.”

Fixes the details of a contact already stored in ChartMogul, field by field.

When to use it
a stakeholder changes role or address in your sales tool and the profile should stay accurate.
Watch out
it needs the contact UUID, not the customer one; put Search Contacts in front to find it.
14

Update a Customer

Action

In Zapier“Updates certain modifiable attributes of a customer object in your ChartMogul account.”

Changes the editable attributes of an existing customer profile and leaves everything else alone.

When to use it
a detail changes in your CRM and the ChartMogul profile should follow suit.
Watch out
the customer UUID is required; only fill in the fields you want changed, as the guide shown in the step reminds you.
15

Update a Note or Call Log

Action

In Zapier“Updates certain modifiable attributes of a note object in your ChartMogul account.”

Reopens a note or call summary already on a profile so you can change its content.

When to use it
a draft call summary gets completed later, once the call has been debriefed.
Watch out
the note UUID is required, and none of this app's seven searches looks up notes.
16

Update an Opportunity

Action

In Zapier“Updates an opportunity object in your ChartMogul account.”

Moves an existing opportunity forward in your ChartMogul account.

When to use it
a deal changes status in your CRM and ChartMogul should show the same picture.
Watch out
the opportunity UUID is required; List Customer's Opportunities placed before it gives you access to the customer's opportunities.
17

Update a Task

Action

In Zapier“Updates a task object in your ChartMogul account.”

Edits a task that already exists in your account.

When to use it
the planned follow-up happened in another tool and the ChartMogul task should reflect it.
Watch out
the task UUID is required; List Customer's Tasks upstream lets you fetch it from the customer in question.
Searches

ChartMogul searches

7 search steps look for data that already exists in ChartMogul, so a later step can use it.

A search finds what already exists before the Zap acts. With ChartMogul, it is usually the step that supplies the UUID your actions need. Three settings decide what happens when the result surprises you.

1

Search for Customer via Email

Search

In Zapier“Searches for a customer profile using the customer's email”

Starting from an email address, this search finds the customer profile and hands its UUID to the steps that follow.

When to use it
it is the usual way in before a note, a task or an opportunity, when the starting tool only knows the email.
Watch out
the address is required; if several profiles share it, the first one goes through by default.
2

Search for Customer via External ID

Search

In Zapier“Searches for a customer profile using the customer's external ID”

Your own internal ID acts as the key: the search returns the ChartMogul profile that carries it.

When to use it
your billing tool or product database starts the Zap and only passes along its own account ID.
Watch out
the external ID is required and has to be the one recorded when the customer was created.
3

Retrieve a Customer Profile

Search

In Zapier“Retrieves a ChartMogul customer profile using the Customer UUID”

When the UUID is already known, this step fetches the full customer profile so later steps can use its data.

When to use it
to enrich an internal alert with details from the profile before it goes out to the team.
Watch out
the field takes the ChartMogul UUID; to start from an email or an external ID, use one of the two searches above instead.
4

Retrieve a Metric

Search

In Zapier“Retrieves the specified metric, for the specified time period.”

Reads a ChartMogul metric over the period you set, so a later step can reuse the number.

When to use it
posting a figure in the team channel or adding it to a shared dashboard.
Watch out
metric, start date and end date are required, and both dates follow ISO 8601. ChartMogul has no trigger of its own, so another app has to start that Zap.
5

List Customer's Tasks

Search

In Zapier“Lists task objects for the specific customer”

Lists the tasks of a given customer, ongoing or completed depending on the option you set.

When to use it
before Update a Task, to grab the task to edit, or to check that a follow-up is not already planned.
Watch out
the customer UUID is required; the completed option is optional and switches between closed and open tasks.
6

List Customer's Opportunities

Search

In Zapier“Lists opportunity objects of the specified ChartMogul customer UUID”

Gathers the opportunities attached to a customer, ready to feed an update or a notification.

When to use it
right before Update an Opportunity, when your CRM reports a stage change on that account.
Watch out
the customer UUID is required, and if several opportunities come back, set what the Zap does with multiple results.
7

Search Contacts

Search

In Zapier“Search for a contact using the customer's email, external ID, or UUID”

Finds a contact from the email, the external ID or the UUID of the customer it belongs to.

When to use it
ahead of Update a Contact, which needs the contact UUID rather than the customer one.
Watch out
a customer can have several contacts, so decide what the Zap does when more than one result comes back.

The three settings every search exposes

  1. Successful if no search results are found?
By default, a search that finds nothing stops the Zap and skips the steps that relied on it. Switched on, the Zap carries on without a result.
  2. Create X if it doesn't exist yet?
This box turns a search into a find-or-create. ChartMogul offers no such variant in Zapier, so you will not see it here.
  3. If multiple search results are found?
Three ways out when several items match: take the first one (the default), stop the Zap, or pass all of them on at once.
When it breaks

When it breaks

Zapier documents no ChartMogul-specific limit. Problems come from Zapier's general rules and from required fields.

Four situations cover most Zaps that go wrong. If yours stalls, the Zapier troubleshooting guide walks through the usual causes.

  • History never comes across

A Zap only handles what arrives after you publish it. Older answers and deals will not reach ChartMogul on their own; that backfill is a separate project.
  • The loop that drains your quota

If the action writes into the same tool the trigger watches, each write fires the Zap again and your task count melts fast.
  • A flood gets held back

A trigger that suddenly returns a huge batch, after an import or a migration, can be held back by Zapier's flood protection.
  • Customer not found, Zap stopped

By default, a ChartMogul search with no match stops the Zap, and the action waiting for the UUID never runs. The success-with-no-results setting changes that.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

01Is the ChartMogul Zapier integration free?
Partly. ChartMogul is not a paid-only app, and Zapier's free plan gives you 100 tasks a month with two-step Zaps. Actions that target a customer by email or external ID, like tags and custom attributes, fit inside that. Every action that needs the customer UUID, though, requires a search in front of it. That makes the Zap multi-step, and multi-step Zaps need a paid plan. The same goes for a filter or a second action: anything beyond one trigger and one action leaves the free tier.
02How many tasks does a ChartMogul Zap use?
One task per successful action, and nothing for the trigger. Checking for new data costs nothing either, however often Zapier looks. A failed action is not counted. A Zap that writes a note, adds a tag and opens a task for an account manager completes three actions, so three tasks per run. On the free plan your quota is 100 tasks a month, shared across all your Zaps, so a busy survey can eat through it.
03Does ChartMogul react in real time through Zapier?
ChartMogul has no trigger, so it depends on the app that starts the Zap. If that trigger is instant, the Zap runs the moment the event happens, whatever your plan. If it is a polling trigger, Zapier checks on a timer: 15 minutes on Free, 2 minutes on Professional, 1 minute on Team and Enterprise. The ChartMogul steps then run straight after. A change inside ChartMogul itself cannot start a Zap.
04What do you need to connect ChartMogul to Zapier?
A ChartMogul account and a Zapier account. You add the connection from the Apps page in Zapier with + Add connection, sign in to ChartMogul in the tab that opens, then grant access. For opportunities and tasks you also need ChartMogul users with a CRM seat, because the opportunity owner and the task assignee must both have one. Without that seat, those two actions cannot go through. Check seats before you build.
05Why does ChartMogul ask for a UUID you do not have?
Because most actions point at the customer by ChartMogul's internal ID, which the app starting the Zap often does not carry. The fix is a search in front of the action: Search for Customer via Email if you have the email, Search for Customer via External ID if you have your own ID. You then map the UUID it finds into the action. Only the tag and attribute actions have variants that skip it.
06What if the operation you need is not there?
ChartMogul offers 17 actions and 7 searches in Zapier, but no trigger and no delete. So you cannot start a Zap on a new subscriber or a revenue drop, and you cannot remove a note from Zapier. If that is what you need, check what the ChartMogul integration on Make offers, since it does not necessarily expose the same operations. Otherwise start the Zap from another app and keep ChartMogul as the destination.
07Zapier, Make or n8n for ChartMogul?
No tool wins by default; it comes down to your criteria. First, the ChartMogul operations each one exposes, compared one by one, especially on the trigger side. Second, how each tool counts what you consume, bearing in mind that on Zapier a search makes the Zap multi-step. Third, where the automation runs and who maintains it. Put those questions to your real use case before you choose. The answer differs from team to team.
